TravelCenters of America (TA) has named two professional drivers as 2026 Citizen Driver award winners during the Mid-America Trucking Show. The annual award recognizes drivers who demonstrate strong safety records, leadership, and contributions to the trucking community beyond their daily routes.

The recognition highlights drivers who consistently combine safe operation with mentorship, industry involvement, and long-term performance.

What is the TA Citizen Driver award?

The TA Citizen Driver award is an annual recognition program created by TravelCenters of America to honor professional drivers who demonstrate excellence in safety, leadership, and community involvement.

The award focuses on more than miles driven. It highlights drivers who influence others through mentorship, safety advocacy, and participation in industry programs.

This program is designed to recognize both performance behind the wheel and contribution to the broader trucking community.

Who were the 2026 TA Citizen Driver award winners?

The 2026 recipients are Steven Brand and Bruce Jones. Both drivers were recognized for long-term safety records, leadership roles, and contributions to driver development and industry programs.

Their selection was announced during the Mid-America Trucking Show.

Both honorees represent a combination of consistent safety performance and strong industry engagement.

Steven Brand: long-term safety and mentorship in trucking

Steven Brand has 36 years of experience and nearly 5 million crash-free miles. He has spent close to 30 years with FedEx Freight, where he is known as a mentor and resource for other drivers.

Beyond his driving career, Brand has coached participants in the Ohio Truck Driving Championships and supported youth and safety-focused programs across the industry.

His recognition reflects both sustained safe driving and a strong commitment to mentoring other drivers.

Bruce Jones: military background, safety record, and leadership role

Bruce Jones has accumulated more than 4 million crash- and ticket-free miles over 28 years of driving. He is a third-generation driver and Marine Corps veteran with more than 1 million safe miles in tanker operations.

He currently drives for Hoffman Transportation and has received multiple industry recognitions, including Illinois Driver of the Year in 2024 and a Grand Champion Elite Eight Finalist placement the same year.

Jones also serves on his company’s driver advisory board, contributing directly to safety initiatives and operational improvements.

His career reflects a blend of high-level safety performance and active involvement in improving driver programs.

How are Citizen Driver winners recognized?

TA will hold dedication ceremonies later in the year to honor the 2026 winners. Steven Brand will be recognized in London, while Bruce Jones will be recognized in Wilmington.

In addition to public recognition, TA is donating $5,000 to Truckers Against Trafficking on behalf of the award recipients.

Recognition for winners includes both ceremonial events and charitable contributions tied to industry causes.

What is the purpose of the Citizen Driver program?

The Citizen Driver program launched in 2013 to recognize professional drivers who demonstrate excellence in safety, leadership, and community involvement.

Since its launch, the program has honored 40 drivers. Candidates are evaluated by an independent panel that considers both career achievements and contributions outside the cab.

The program exists to highlight drivers whose influence extends beyond mileage and daily routes.

Why does driver recognition matter in trucking?

Driver recognition programs like Citizen Driver reinforce the importance of safety, mentorship, and leadership across the industry.

They emphasize that success is measured not only in miles driven but also in the impact drivers have on peers, training, and safety culture.

Programs like this help highlight the human side of trucking and the leadership role experienced drivers play.

Registration is now underway for one of the most recognized truck beauty competitions in the country, with Shell Rotella SuperRigs set to return for its 44th year.

This year’s event will take place June 25 through June 27 at Bristol Motor Speedway, a venue widely known as “The Last Great Colosseum.” The location is no stranger to large-scale events, hosting everything from major racing series to football matchups and concerts. It also features one of the largest outdoor center-hung four-sided video screens in the world, along with an on-site campground for attendees.

Those planning to enter will want to move quickly. Early registration gives participants access to a reserved parking space and the ability to choose a preferred judging time, according to event organizers.

Sign-ups will stay open until 4 p.m. Central on June 26, or until the field reaches its 125-truck limit, whichever comes first.

The competition continues to draw attention across the trucking world, known for highlighting both appearance and the work behind the wheel. According to a news release, SuperRigs remains one of the industry’s premier events, bringing together the best-looking and hardest-working trucks on the road.

Participants this year will be competing for more than just recognition. The event will award over $25,000 in cash and prizes across more than 20 categories, including the top honor of Best of Show.

In addition, 12 drivers will earn a spot in the 2027 Shell Rotella SuperRigs Calendar, a feature that has become a goal for many entrants over the years.

The event is open to the public and designed to be family-friendly, offering a chance for attendees to get up close with custom rigs and meet the people behind them.

Winners in each category will be selected by a panel of judges, while the Shell Rotella team will determine which trucks make it into the annual calendar.

With limited entry spots and added incentives for early sign-up, this year’s show is expected to fill quickly as anticipation builds for Bristol.

Truck show season always brings out the best builds in the country, but this year’s PKY Truck Beauty Championship at the Mid America Trucking Show raised the bar again. With nearly 200 trucks competing in Louisville, the 35th annual event delivered a mix of polished showpieces, working rigs, and fully custom builds that drew attention all weekend.

When the votes were counted, one truck stood out from the crowd.

Alfalfa Cruiser Takes People’s Choice

Jason Flores earned the People’s Choice award with his truck known as “Alfalfa Cruiser,” a 2018 Peterbilt 389 paired with 2018 XL double flatbeds. The award is decided by fellow participants and attendees, making it one of the most talked-about wins of the show.

The combination of detail, presentation, and overall presence helped it rise above a packed field of competitors.

Big Rig Build Off Draws Top Builders

With nearly 200 trucks competing, earning a spot at the top in any category says a lot about the build and the people behind it.

Recognition at the national level doesn’t come easy in trucking. It takes years on the road, a reputation for doing things the right way, and the kind of leadership others notice. That’s exactly what led to Ingrid Brown being named the 2026 Driver of the Year by the Women In Trucking Association.

The announcement came during the Salute to Women Behind the Wheel event at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky. The event highlights women who continue raising the bar across trucking through consistency, professionalism, and long-term impact.

A Career Built Over Decades

Brown’s career spans 46 years, covering everything from running as an independent owner-operator to managing operations for a specialized refrigerated fleet. She currently serves as operations manager at Blackjack Express LLC while still spending time behind the wheel hauling heavy, oversize, and refrigerated freight.

Her background includes launching Rollin’ B LLC and steadily building a reputation rooted in safety, reliability, and leadership. Over time, that consistency has turned into a legacy recognized across the industry.

She has also earned multiple honors throughout her career, including the National Association of Small Trucking Companies Woman Driver of the Year Award, the TA Petro Citizen Driver Award, and recognition as an inaugural inductee at the Mid-America Trucking Show Wall of Fame.

Leadership Beyond the Driver’s Seat

Brown has been involved with the Women In Trucking Association since 2007 as a charter member. She is now serving her second term on the board of directors and works as a liaison to the Women In Trucking Foundation board.

Her influence goes beyond titles. She has contributed as a safety collaborator with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and has spent years mentoring other drivers while staying active in her community.

Her story also includes personal resilience, having survived melanoma cancer three times while continuing to stay engaged in the industry.

Recognition From Industry Leaders

Her selection for Driver of the Year reflects how peers and leadership view her impact.

“We are proud to recognize Ingrid, whose tireless commitment to excellence, safety, and empowering women in this industry sets a standard that inspires us all,” said Jennifer Hedrick, CAE, WIT president and CEO.

That same respect is echoed by others who have worked alongside her.

“Ingrid consistently operates with the highest standards of safety, reliability, and integrity, understanding that her actions reflect not only on her company, but on the trucking industry as a whole,” said Kristy Knichel, president of Knichel Logistics. “Through her actions, attitude, and dedication, she elevates the profession and inspires those around her.”

What the Award Represents

The Driver of the Year Award, presented with support from Walmart, focuses on individuals who consistently prioritize safety while helping shape how the public views trucking.

“Walmart is proud to sponsor the Driver of the Year award because it reflects our commitment to safety, excellence, and a culture of belonging across transportation,” said Ryan McDaniel, Walmart senior vice president, transportation. “Ingrid Brown embodies what this recognition stands for: a seasoned professional whose leadership, safety advocacy, and dedication to the industry have made a meaningful impact. Congrats to Ingrid for being named Driver of the Year.”

Finalists Recognized Alongside Brown

Brown was selected from a strong group of finalists, each bringing their own contributions to the profession:

Fabiola Campos-Buenavista, professional driver and driver development instructor, FedEx Freight
Gina Jones, company driver, Werner
KellyLynn McLaughlin, national transportation driver, dump and roll off, Clean Harbors Environmental Services

Why This Recognition Matters

Awards like this highlight what many already know. Long careers built on safety, consistency, and mentorship don’t just move freight. They shape the future of trucking.

Brown’s story reflects what’s possible when experience meets leadership and when drivers stay committed to doing the job right year after year.

Springfield, Missouri, is preparing for a major trucking event this summer as Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary. Hundreds of historic trucks will arrive in the city for the American Truck Historical Society (ATHS) 2026 National Convention and Truck Show, giving enthusiasts a rare opportunity to see classic rigs, restored vehicles, and rare working trucks all in one place.

Celebrating the trucks that built Route 66

“ATHS is proud to be an official attraction of the Route 66 Centennial Celebration,” said Courtney Cesar, ATHS convention organizer. “There’s no better way to celebrate Route 66 than with the trucks that helped build it. As a historic hub along Route 66, Springfield provides the perfect backdrop for a gathering that honors the legacy and evolution of trucking.”

The weeklong event begins June 2, when trucks arrive at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, with the main show scheduled for June 4-6. Springfield, a historic stop along Route 66, is a fitting host city as the iconic highway reaches its centennial. The event is recognized as an official attraction of the Route 66 Centennial Celebration.

What to expect at the show

Attendees can view hundreds of trucks, from meticulously restored classics to rare working rigs, each representing decades of craftsmanship and trucking history.

“Each of these trucks has its own story and craftsmanship,” said Peter Wild, ATHS convention committee chair. “The convention provides a welcoming space for all trucking enthusiasts to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and share the passion for trucking history during the show and at special events throughout the week.”

Activities beyond the trucks

The convention offers educational sessions, hands-on demonstrations, vendor exhibits, and an evening light show featuring the trucks. Attendees can also enter a raffle for a chance to win VIP tickets to a NASCAR race at Kansas Speedway in September.

Visitors can explore Springfield’s Route 66 landmarks, including the Route 66 Visitor Center, local museums, and roadside attractions such as the World’s Largest Fork and the Birthplace of Route 66 sign.

Thanks to volunteers and sponsors

ATHS credits its volunteers, sponsors, and supporters for making the event possible. Sponsors include Cummins, Mack Trucks, Kenworth, Vander Haag’s, Iowa 80, CAT Scale, Truckomat, Clark Freight, Reiselt’s Machine Works, Gully Transportation, and the Sercombe family.

More information and registration details are available here or through the ATHS Connect mobile app.

Market conditions are shifting fast, and staying ahead of freight demand, equipment cycles, and rate pressure is getting harder to manage in real time. To address that, Freight Transportation Research is hosting its 2026 Commercial Vehicle Symposium on April 21, bringing together industry decision-makers for a one-day, in-person event focused on data, forecasting, and planning.

The event will take place in Indianapolis and is built around practical discussion rather than broad, surface-level presentations.

Focus on What Actually Impacts Operations

The structure of this symposium is intentionally tight. Instead of covering a wide range of general topics, the agenda centers on the numbers and trends that directly influence freight movement, equipment demand, and rate strategy.

“These new small-group symposiums are built to deliver a focused blend of quantitative analysis, forward-looking forecasts, and candid discussion—paired with meaningful networking among senior industry decision-makers,” FTR said.

The goal is to cut through short-term noise and focus on what is shaping the market over the coming months.

What Attendees Will Get from It

Sessions will break down freight demand patterns, commercial vehicle cycles, and how both connect to capacity and pricing decisions. The information is designed to be applied, not just reviewed.

“Together, the speakers will provide actionable insight into freight demand, equipment cycles and the implications for capacity, pricing and capital decisions,” FTR said.

That includes how shifting demand affects load availability, how equipment trends influence supply, and what that means for margins moving forward.

Who’s Speaking

The sessions will be led by key members of FTR’s leadership team, including Jonathan Starks, Eric Starks, Avery Vise, and Dan Moyer.

Each speaker brings a different angle on the data, covering everything from macro trends to day-to-day operational impact.

Location and Format

The symposium will be held at the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis – Airport. Attendance is limited by design to keep discussions direct and allow for real interaction instead of one-way presentations.

Smaller groups also make it easier to ask questions and compare notes with others dealing with the same pressures.

Registration Information

The event takes place on April 21, with registration set at $495 per person. Space is limited due to the format.

Truckstop.com is giving its freight podcast a fresh start. Formerly known as Freight Nation, the series has been rebranded as Behind the Freight, reflecting a focus on real-world insights for truck drivers, carriers, brokers, and freight professionals.

Freight Nation was hosted by Brent Hutto for three years, building a loyal audience. Hutto is passing the reins to new co-hosts Todd Waldron, vice president of carrier experience, and John Howland, director of broker sales. Combined, Waldron and Howland bring more than 40 years of industry experience to the show.

“Running a freight business can feel overwhelming,” Waldron said. “Rate swings, fraud risks, and compliance updates. There’s plenty of talk in this industry, but genuine insight is hard to find. That’s why each week we focus on what is working right now, so listeners have timely, relevant information they can use to address business challenges.”

Behind the Freight builds on Truckstop.com’s commitment to equipping carriers and freight professionals with tools, information, and strategies to manage daily operations and long-term business growth.

“Understanding the market is one thing,” Howland said. “Knowing how it affects daily operations is another. By talking to people involved in freight operations, we get insights that help listeners prepare for what’s coming.”

Each episode features conversations with freight professionals about the issues that matter most, including market trends, fraud prevention, compliance, and operational efficiency. The podcast connects broader industry developments with the practical decisions drivers and brokers face every day.

“Every episode goes beyond the headlines,” Truckstop said. “The focus is on connecting broader industry trends with the decisions people make every day, without losing sight of the human side of the business. That mirrors what Truckstop.com has always stood for. Serving this industry means showing up for the people in it, not just the freight they move.”

The debut episode, titled Why Trucking Is About People, Not Just Freight (And Why That’s More Profitable), brings the transition full circle. Hutto joins Waldron and Howland to reflect on how relationships have shaped his career, why carriers remain the industry’s backbone, and how regulatory changes can create major shifts in the market.

The relaunch coincides with the Mid-America Trucking Show, where Truckstop.com is a sponsor. Waldron and Howland will record three live episodes at booth #16160, giving attendees the chance to hear discussions in real time.

New episodes of Behind the Freight will be released bi-weekly. Listeners can subscribe to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube to stay up to date with actionable insights that help drivers and freight professionals succeed in a dynamic market.

Truck owners running Mack Trucks equipment still have a narrow window to get ahead in this year’s calendar contest, with the early entry deadline set for March 31.

The annual Mack Trucks Calendar Contest has returned for its 2027 edition, bringing new categories into the mix while continuing to highlight working trucks across real-world applications. The program focuses on trucks currently in revenue service, not showpieces or retired units, putting the spotlight on equipment that earns its keep every day.

“The Mack Calendar Contest is really about the pride our customers have in their trucks and the work they do with them,” said David Galbraith, Mack Trucks vice president, global brand and marketing. “Every year, we see incredible entries that capture the toughness, reliability, and character of Mack trucks in action. With the addition of new categories this year, we’re looking forward to seeing even more stories from the people who rely on Mack to get the job done.”

What’s New in the 2027 Contest

This year’s contest introduces additional themed categories aimed at reflecting how Mack trucks are used across different job types and operating conditions.

New categories include:

Built for Toughest Jobs

Built for Versatility

Built for the Long Haul

Alternative Fuels

These are being added alongside returning categories such as Old Bulldogs Hard at Work, as well as model-specific entries for trucks like the Mack MD, Mack LR, and Mack TerraPro.

Important Dates to Know

Drivers and fleet operators planning to enter should pay close attention to the timeline:

Early entry period ends March 31

Public voting runs from April 1 through April 30

Submissions remain open during the voting period

Winners will be announced by May 30

Each participant can receive one vote per day in each category through the contest website.

What Winners Receive

Selected trucks will be featured in the official 2027 Mack calendar. Each winning entry will also receive a professional photo shoot arranged by Mack Trucks.

In addition to the calendar, selected entries may be showcased across Mack’s social media platforms, which reach more than 1,000,000 followers.

Who Should Enter

The contest is open to trucks actively working in fleets, meaning vehicles that are still hauling, operating, and generating revenue. This keeps the focus on real working conditions, whether that is long-haul freight, vocational jobs, or specialized applications.

Where to Find More Information

Full contest rules and submission details are available through Mack Trucks’ website here. Questions about entries can be directed to socialmedia@macktrucks.com.

The finished 2027 calendar is expected to be released later this year through Mack’s online store.

As wildfires continue to impact western Nebraska, the trucking industry is stepping up in a big way. With more than 750,000 acres burned and tens of thousands of cattle displaced, the need for transportation has become just as urgent as the need for supplies themselves.

Feed, equipment, and basic resources all have to move quickly, and that responsibility is falling on truck drivers willing to take on the challenge, even as operating costs continue to climb.

Industry Groups Coordinate Response Effort

The Nebraska Trucking Association is working alongside the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and the Nebraska Cattlemen to help organize relief efforts. With thousands of acres affected and widespread disruption to farms and ranches, moving supplies efficiently has become a top priority.

For drivers, this means stepping into routes that are not always part of a normal schedule, often with tight turnaround times and unpredictable conditions.

Financial Support for Drivers on Relief Runs

To help offset the cost of jumping in, especially with fuel prices remaining high, the Nebraska Trucking Association has introduced a stipend program through its charitable arm, the Nebraska Trucking Cares Fund.

The program offers:

$0.50 per mile

Up to 500 miles per trip

Support for hauling approved relief supplies into affected areas

The fund has committed an initial $5,000 to get the effort started, with additional fundraising underway to keep support available for drivers and carriers who volunteer.

This kind of structure is designed to make it easier for both independent drivers and fleets to participate without taking on the full financial burden.

A Response Driven by the Trucking Community

Many drivers have already expressed interest in helping, but cost pressures have made it harder to step away from regular freight.

“Many truckers have voiced a willingness to help, but they too are facing unprecedented challenges with skyrocketing fuel prices and other cost concerns,” said Kent Grisham, president and CEO of the NTA. “But I am so proud of the NTA members who have stepped forward with a plan to support these trucking heroes, in the aftermath of the worst wildfires in the state’s history.”

Despite those challenges, the industry continues to respond when it matters most.

Grisham added, “Homes, farms, and ranches have been destroyed, and at least one life has been lost in this terrible ordeal. But like it has always been, the trucking community responds with grit and determination to get the cargo delivered. We’re glad to have the Nebraska Trucking Cares Fund to help, and we hope everyone in the trucking community will join forces with us either by offering trucks, trailers, and drivers, or by contributing to the fund so we can keep it going.”

How Drivers and Fleets Can Get Involved

Truckers, farmers, and ranchers moving relief supplies into impacted areas can apply for the stipend to help cover part of their fuel costs. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is also maintaining a list of current needs, helping coordinate what supplies are most urgent.

For fleets and owner-operators, this creates a clear path to contribute without going in blind. Knowing what is needed and where it needs to go helps avoid wasted miles and ensures deliveries make an immediate impact.

Why This Matters Beyond Nebraska

Situations like this highlight a reality the trucking industry knows well. When disaster hits, supply chains depend on drivers who are willing to step in and keep goods moving under pressure.

Support programs like this one help make that possible, especially when margins are tight and costs are unpredictable.

For drivers, it is another example of the role trucking plays beyond freight. It is about showing up when communities need it most and making sure critical supplies reach the people and operations depending on them.
