New Employment Law Causes Struggle for California Drivers

A new California law has changed the definitions of non-employee drivers, and this change has caused a stir among owner-operator trying to figure out how to adapt. The new law AB5 is expected to take effect late 2022. Truckers fear that AB5 may lead to many owner-operators going out of business as well as add to the already huge trucker shortage.

Bill Aboudi, president of Oakland Port Services Corp., said, “I will have to take less work and charge more.”

Many drivers indicated that on Wednesday they will refuse to do work in protest at the Los Angeles & Long Beach ports as well as the following Monday at the Port of Oakland.
