Truck drivers and trucking companies played an essential role in moving over 26,000 pounds of expired and unused prescription medications collected during the Arkansas Drug Take Back event on October 25, 2025. The operation involved Arkansas State Police (ASP) and the Arkansas National Guard (ANG), who used multiple tractor-trailers to safely consolidate and transport the medications.

Keeping Communities Safe

“Reducing the risk of prescription drug misuse begins at home,” said Colonel Mike Hagar, Director of ASP and Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Public Safety. “Each year, this initiative exemplifies the powerful collaboration between law enforcement and community members to help keep Arkansas safer for our families.”

Trucks were loaded at the ASP Troop A Headquarters in Little Rock, and the National Guard’s Counter Drug Program coordinated the transport to the Clean Harbors incineration facility in El Dorado, Arkansas.

“We appreciate the partnership and support Clean Harbors has provided,” said Arkansas Drug Director Tom Fisher. “From collection to disposal, the Take Back operation is an example of Arkansans working together to make communities safer.”

A Statewide Effort

This year, 140 law enforcement agencies and community partners managed 375 collection sites across all 75 counties in Arkansas. Each of ASP’s 12 Troop Headquarters acted as a regional hub to safely handle and consolidate the medications. Agencies involved included the Arkansas Drug Director’s Office, county sheriff’s offices, municipal police departments, multi-jurisdictional drug task forces, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Since the program began in 2010, Arkansas has safely collected and destroyed over 684,000 pounds of unused or expired prescription medications—more than 342 tons.

“This effort has significantly reduced opportunities for drug diversion and has helped safeguard community health throughout the state,” ASP said.

Why Truck Drivers Matter

Professional drivers and trucking companies were key to moving these medications safely from collection hubs to disposal facilities. Their experience handling freight and navigating Arkansas highways made the operation efficient and secure, highlighting the trucking industry’s role in public safety beyond traditional deliveries.

Arkansas-based Maverick Transportation has announced its 2024 Drivers of the Year, honoring two outstanding professionals. Justin Melvin was awarded Over-the-Road Driver of the Year, while Kenneth Thomas was named Dedicated Driver of the Year.

This annual recognition spotlights drivers who go above and beyond, exemplifying exceptional safety practices, professionalism, and integrity. Both Melvin and Thomas serve as ambassadors for the Maverick fleet, setting a high standard for the trucking community.

Celebrating Justin Melvin’s Achievements

Justin Melvin, who has served Maverick Transportation for 18 years, was recognized for his unwavering dedication to safety and his exceptional skills as a road trainer. John Coppens, Maverick’s Vice President of Operations, highlighted Melvin’s contributions, stating, “We couldn’t be prouder of Justin. He has earned the respect of his students and peers, and his vast knowledge and incredible work ethic will allow him to make a difference on our driver advisory councils.”

Melvin has accumulated an impressive 1.9 million safe driving miles and has trained 66 drivers during his time with Maverick. Commenting on his achievement, Melvin shared, “I never thought it would happen, and I am still in shock about it. I have a lot to live up to, and it will probably take a while to sink in.”

He also offered insight into his driving philosophy, referencing advice he received early in his career. “A tenured driver told me to drive my truck and secure it every day like my family was on either side of me. That made me think about how I was doing things. Everyone has to start somewhere, and I want to make sure they are trained right,” Melvin explained.

Honoring Kenneth Thomas for Excellence

Kenneth Thomas, selected as Maverick’s 2024 Dedicated Driver of the Year, has been an integral part of the company for over 13 years. Known for his integrity and reliability, Thomas has consistently delivered on time, claim-free, and with unwavering commitment.

Justin Brown, Vice President of Dedicated Operations, praised Thomas, saying, “Ken embodies the Maverick way. He has performed his job with integrity, respect, and commitment, always delivering on time and claim-free. His dedication has allowed us to grow with our customers, creating additional jobs for other drivers. Thank you, Ken. We appreciate you.”

Upon receiving the award, Thomas shared his surprise, “I was completely shocked. As I was walking back to the table, I didn’t even hear my name get called for Driver of the Year. When I realized, I was just overwhelmed with honor.” He also emphasized what sets Maverick apart, stating, “What sets Maverick apart is our attention to detail and doing everything The Maverick Way®.”

The Arkansas Trucking Association (ATA) is praising the state legislature for passing a robust set of laws aimed at combating organized retail crime, including Act 322, which imposes stricter penalties for cargo theft. This move marks a significant step forward in protecting the state’s transportation and logistics industries.

Addressing a Critical Concern

“The industry saw unprecedented levels of cargo theft last year, up 27% from the previous year and a 1,500% increase since 2001,” said Shannon Newton, president of ATA. “These laws demonstrate that Arkansas lawmakers understand the economic threat organized retail crime and cargo theft pose to our industry and all consumers.”

The ATA highlights how the collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders, and officials like Attorney General Griffin was instrumental in the success of this legislative package, which seeks to deter cargo theft and strengthen supply chain security.

A Priority for the Trucking Sector

Sponsored by Sen. Ben Gilmore (R-Crossett) and Rep. Jeremiah Moore (R-Clarendon), and strongly supported by the Arkansas Attorney General’s office, the organized retail crime initiative targets a pressing issue for the trucking industry. The legislation received broad bipartisan backing as it advanced through the legislature.

“By recognizing that organized crime operates throughout the supply chain, from retail stores to transportation networks, this collaboration has produced meaningful legislation that will better protect Arkansas businesses and consumers,” Newton said. “We remain committed to working with our partners to develop practical solutions to the challenges facing our industry.”

Key Features of the Organized Retail Crime Policy

A structured plan addressing organized retail theft networks (Act 321).

Up to 10 additional years of penalties for organized cargo theft (Act 322).

Prohibition of earned release credits for the enhanced portion of sentences related to cargo theft (Act 322).

Coverage of all cargo in transit, including trucks, railroads, and intermodal containers (Act 322).

Criminal penalties for fraudulent gift card schemes based on redemption value (SB302).

Immediate enforcement supported by an emergency declaration.

A Strong Warning Against Cargo Theft

“This comprehensive legislation sends a clear message that organized retail crime and cargo theft will not be tolerated in Arkansas and will be met with serious consequences,” Newton emphasized.

With the passage of these laws, Arkansas positions itself as a leader in supply chain security, reinforcing the importance of collaboration to combat organized crime and protect both businesses and consumers.

Maverick Transportation has once again extended its prestigious “Salute” truck honor to recognize the contributions of a military veteran. This year, the privilege has been awarded to Army veteran and seasoned Maverick driver Darryl Hammond. Hammond, who was also celebrated as Maverick’s Dedicated Driver of the Year in 2022, now becomes the 11th driver chosen to operate one of these custom tribute vehicles that pay homage to military service.

With an impressive legacy spanning nearly two decades at Maverick, Hammond has solidified himself as a key member of the team. He has played an instrumental role in mentoring over 59 aspiring drivers, received acknowledgment as a Dedicated Driver of the Month, and earned the ultimate accolade for Dedicated Driver of the Year in 2022. Upon receiving this latest honor, Hammond shared his heartfelt appreciation, saying, “I am so proud to be a part of this. This is such an honor.”

Hammond also reflected on the significance of his wife’s role in his life, attributing much of his success to her unwavering encouragement. “She is my rock and makes me a better person,” he said. The couple has been happily married for 17 years, and her steadfast support has been a guiding force throughout his career.

Maverick first introduced the “Salute” trucks in 2018 as a powerful tribute to both veterans and active-duty military members. Each truck is decorated with custom vinyl wraps featuring symbols from all branches of the U.S. military, as well as imagery that commemorates iconic moments in the nation’s history. Currently, five Maverick drivers with military backgrounds proudly operate these meaningful vehicles.

These trucks serve not only as moving dedications but also as an ongoing symbol of gratitude. Drivers of the “Salute” trucks are actively involved in Veterans Day commemorations each November and participate in multiple events year-round to honor military personnel.

Based in North Little Rock, Arkansas, Maverick Transportation has been a driving force in trucking since its establishment in 1980. Operating a fleet of over 1,600 vehicles, the company specializes in flatbed, glass, and marine transportation across North America. Through initiatives like the “Salute” trucks, Maverick underscores its unwavering commitment to honoring the men and women who have served the country.
