The Technology and Maintenance Council recognized several individuals this week for the work they put in behind the scenes to keep fleets running and standards moving forward.

The honors were announced during TMC’s 2026 Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition in Nashville, where technicians, fleet leaders, and industry partners were recognized for their service to both the council and the trucking industry.

“TMC strives to advance the professional standards for commercial vehicle maintenance in our industry and has done so for 70 years,” said TMC Executive Director Robert Braswell. “We have leaders across our organization, but the technicians and executives we honor here set and raise the bar for excellence in this industry every day.”

Recognized Associates

Several professionals were named Recognized Associates for their contributions to the council and the industry.

Bailey Stephenson, Alcoa Wheels

Bob Cornwell, ASE

Kristy Coffman, Mitchell 1

Greg Matheson, The Lubrizol Corporation

Leonard Wheatley of FleetPro, Inc., received the Distinguished Service Provider Award.

The American Trucking Associations has selected 20 professional drivers to serve as the 2026 2027 America’s Road Team Captains, recognizing individuals whose careers reflect consistent safety, professionalism, and leadership behind the wheel.

Over the next two years, these drivers will represent the trucking industry across the country. Their work includes attending industry events, engaging with communities, visiting schools, and speaking with policymakers to promote safe driving while sharing firsthand insight into trucking as a career.

“This group of professional drivers have earned their place at the top through years of hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to safety on the road,” said ATA President and CEO Chris Spear. “They represent a vital segment of the American workforce, one whose impact is felt by nearly every person in the country. As these Captains take to the road with a new mission and an important message, we are incredibly proud of their achievements and confident the nation will gain valuable insights from their leadership and the example they set for our industry.”

A Longstanding Program Focused on Safety

America’s Road Team was established in 1986 to recognize professional truck drivers who have demonstrated exceptional safety records and a commitment to representing the industry with integrity. With the support of their companies, Captains volunteer their time to participate in public outreach efforts that help explain the role trucking plays in everyday life.

The 2026 2027 class represents 13 states and includes four military veterans, one independent contractor, and drivers from both small fleets and large national carriers. Together, the group brings 51 million miles of safe driving experience to the program.

Volvo Trucks Celebrates 25 Years Supporting America’s Road Team

Volvo Trucks remains the program’s sponsor and will mark 25 years of partnership with America’s Road Team this October. During their two-year term, the Captains will travel the country in ATA’s Interstate One Image Truck, a Volvo VNL 860 pulling an American flag themed trailer. The trailer features a mobile classroom and a state of the art truck driving simulator used for education and outreach.

“Volvo Trucks is honored to continue our long-standing sponsorship of America’s Road Team and to take part in this week’s selection of the 2026–2027 Captains,” said Volvo Trucks North America President Peter Voorhoeve. “This year at MCE marks 25 years of Volvo’s proud support of America’s Road Team, a milestone that reflects our deep respect for professional drivers and our commitment to safety, professionalism, and leadership across the trucking industry. America’s Road Team is one of the most visible groups of professional truck drivers in the country, and we believe their hard work and dedication pays.”

How the 2026 2027 Captains Were Selected

ATA conducted the final round of selections from January 18 through January 20 at its headquarters in Washington, DC. During this process, drivers were evaluated on more than just miles logged or years of experience.

Candidates were judged on their ability to clearly communicate about trucking, safety, and transportation issues, as well as their overall driving records. The selection panel included trucking industry executives and members of the trade press, ensuring the final group reflected both operational excellence and the ability to represent the industry publicly.

Once selected, the new Captains received their signature navy blue America’s Road Team blazers and immediately began their work as ambassadors. Their focus over the next two years will be on improving public understanding of trucking and reinforcing the industry’s commitment to safety and professionalism.

Supporting the Mission of America’s Road Team

Trucking professionals and industry partners can support the work of America’s Road Team by following the Captains throughout their two year term and engaging with them at major industry events, conferences, and community visits. ATA also encourages industry members to follow the team’s journey on Facebook, where updates from the road and event appearances are shared.

“America’s Road Team Captains exemplify the highest standards of safety in our industry, helping to elevate trucking’s image by sharing their experiences and leading by example,” said ATA Chief Operating Officer Dan Horvath. “These respected leaders craft compelling safety messages and demonstrate how the trucking industry offers meaningful, rewarding careers. Through their participation in community events, conferences, and industry engagements, they fulfill the mission of America’s Road Team. We congratulate this new class for their dedication to excellence and for keeping our nation moving safely.”

Truck drivers know the work they do keeps America moving, but getting recognition for the everyday dedication it takes isn’t always easy. The American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently celebrated individuals and organizations that go above and beyond to showcase the value and professionalism of truck driving with the 2025 Mike Russell Trucking Image Award.

“Each year, the Mike Russell Award highlights the creativity and dedication of those who work tirelessly to share our industry’s story,” said Nikki Thomas, vice president of industry affairs at ATA. “This year’s recipients have gone above and beyond in showcasing the essential role trucking plays in our daily lives and the pride that drives our workforce.”

What the Award Means

Sponsored by Great West Casualty Company, the Mike Russell Trucking Image Award recognizes motor carriers, individuals, and trucking organizations that demonstrate professionalism, dedication to safety, and leadership in promoting a positive image of the industry.

“Great West Casualty Company is proud to sponsor the Mike Russell Trucking Image Award, which celebrates those who promote a deeper understanding of the trucking industry,” said Steve Ponder, senior vice president at Great West. “Thanks to the ongoing efforts of past and future recipients, the public’s perception of trucking continues to grow more positive each year.”

Meet the 2025 Honorees

This year’s winners highlight how everyday actions and community involvement can make a real difference.

Trucking Association of New York (TANY)

Through TANY’s Community Supervision initiative, more than 55 individuals have earned their Commercial Driver’s Licenses since 2023. “This isn’t just workforce development – it’s life-changing,” ATA noted. Beyond licensing support, TANY funds and supports the Transportation Club at the Charter School for Applied Technologies High School in Buffalo. What started small has grown into a hub where students explore transportation careers, gain hands-on experience, and connect with mentors in the trucking industry.

Antoine Sadler, Professional Truck Driver, Walmart Transportation

A second-generation driver, Sadler has logged over 2.7 million safe driving miles across a 29-year career. He serves on North Carolina’s Road Team, Walmart’s Road Team, and America’s Road Team, and has competed in multiple truck driving championships. Since 2021, Sadler has served on the TAT board, helped launch the TAT Man to Man campaign, and contributed to the TAT Freedom Drivers Project trailer. He also volunteers with organizations like the Special Olympics, National Night Out, and Samaritan’s Feet, showing that dedication to trucking goes hand in hand with giving back to the community.

“These individuals have seamlessly woven positivity into their everyday lives, creating a ripple effect that touches countless others,” said Dan Horvath, COO of ATA. “Today, we’re proud to expand that list to 66, with two new recipients. These recipients embody ATA’s commitment to promoting a positive image of trucking. Their applications stood out as powerful examples of how storytelling, leadership, and innovation can shape public perception and inspire meaningful change.”

Long-haul, regional, and local drivers know what it takes to keep freight moving safely day after day. The American Trucking Associations is giving that dedication some well-deserved recognition by naming the five finalists for the 2025 ATA National Driver of the Year Award.

Sponsored by DMC Insurance, the award highlights a single professional driver whose career reflects consistent safety, responsibility, and long-term leadership behind the wheel. ATA explained that the finalists come from a group of state-level Drivers of the Year submitted by their affiliated state trucking associations. “Each candidate’s qualifications and achievements are examined by a group of professional industry judges who narrow down the nominees to a group of finalists,” ATA said.

For drivers out on the road, these finalists represent the kind of steady professionalism and clean records that everyone in the cab can appreciate.

The 2025 Finalists

Steve Brand
With 36 years on the road and 29 of them at FedEx Freight, Brand has stacked up more than 4.8 million accident-free miles.
Kevin Flick
Flick has 37 years of experience, 22 of them with Buchheit Logistics. He has collected over 6.1 million accident-free miles. His list of accomplishments includes 11 years in the Missouri Trucking Association’s Chairman’s Safe Driver Club, seven Driver of the Month awards, and being named the 2024 Missouri Driver of the Year.

Williams Jones
Jones brings 51 years of driving experience and 29 years with Walmart Transportation. He has accumulated more than seven million accident-free miles. He was the 2006 Walmart Driver of the Year and continues to train and mentor new drivers. He was also named the 2025 Kansas Driver of the Year.

Duane Staveness
With 33 years in trucking and 25 with FedEx Freight, Staveness has achieved more than 2.55 million accident-free miles. He serves on the Wisconsin Road Team, is a longtime member of the Master Presidents Club for safe driving, and won the 2018 NTDC 5-Axle National Championship. He is the 2025 Wisconsin Driver of the Year.

What Happens Next

The Safety Management Council Awards & Recognition Committee reviews each finalist’s video submission before selecting the winner. The official announcement will be made during ATA’s Safety, Security, and Human Resources National Conference and Exhibition in Oklahoma City from April 1 through April 3, 2026.

“These [people] were selected as finalists for America’s Road Team because they have outstanding safe driving records, share a passion for the trucking industry, and serve as role models among their peers,” said Chris Spear, ATA president and CEO. “They proudly represent ATA and exemplify some of the very best professional truck drivers on the road today. Their dedication and professionalism continue to inspire the entire industry.”

What America’s Road Team Represents

Founded in 1986 and sponsored by Volvo Trucks North America, America’s Road Team brings together professional truck drivers with superior safety records to represent the industry at events, schools, and meetings with policymakers. Captains dedicate a few days each month to share their knowledge of safe driving, the importance of trucking, and industry best practices.

This year’s 31 finalists, representing 19 states, have a combined total of 57 million safe-driving miles and 737 years of professional driving experience. They drive everything from short-haul deliveries to long-haul routes across all 48 continental states. Their goal is to continue raising awareness about highway safety, professionalism, and the essential role trucking plays in the U.S. economy.

Final Selection Process

The finalists will compete for the final team in January at ATA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Judges from various sectors of the trucking industry will evaluate candidates based on safety records, communication skills, industry knowledge, and dedication to promoting trucking to the public.

The new America’s Road Team captains will receive the signature navy blue blazers and begin outreach work with media, public officials, business and community groups, and their fellow drivers nationwide. Past Road Team captains continue to serve as industry ambassadors, frequently participating in safety events, conferences, and speaking engagements.

“Being named a finalist for America’s Road Team is a tremendous honor for professional truck drivers, and ATA applauds each of them for this accomplishment,” said Dan Horvath, ATA COO. “These drivers are the very best of the industry, sharing their expertise and commitment to safety, while educating the motoring public about the vital role trucking plays in our economy.”

Truck freight in the U.S. slipped slightly in September, but behind the numbers, industry analysts are spotting hints of a market shift that could benefit carriers in the coming months.

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) reported that its seasonally adjusted For Hire Truck Tonnage Index fell 0.9% in September to 114.2, down from 115.3 in August. While that drop erased gains from earlier in the summer, tonnage is still 0.8% higher than September 2024, showing slow but steady improvement over the past year.

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said the data highlights just how uneven freight conditions remain.
“Tonnage levels remain choppy, but they are up 2.1% since hitting a low in January. Compared to the high three years earlier, however, truck tonnage is still off by 3.9%. In fact, September’s tonnage level was essentially the same as in September 2023, underscoring the tough freight market over the last few years,” Costello said.

Market Signals Are Shifting

Even though tonnage slipped, other signs suggest the market could be turning. FTR’s Trucking Conditions Index (TCI) rose to a nearly neutral 0.3 in August after sitting at -1.03 in July. The TCI measures key factors like freight volume, rates, capacity, fuel prices, and financing costs to gauge the overall health of the market.

FTR said the latest gain came “primarily due to less challenging freight rates,” noting that while utilization improved slightly, it was not a major driver of the index change.

Looking ahead, FTR projects better conditions in 2026 and 2027, even though near-term readings will likely stay close to current levels.

Capacity Tightening Could Lead to Recovery

One of the biggest potential drivers of market recovery may come from tightening capacity. Avery Vise, vice president of trucking at FTR, said restrictions on issuing and renewing commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) for foreign drivers could impact fleet capacity.

“The potential for a capacity-driven recovery in trucking has risen over the past month due to severe restrictions imposed on issuing and renewing commercial driver’s licenses for foreign drivers,” Vise said. “However, despite some anecdotal reports about various effects of a crackdown on immigrant drivers, available data has yet to show a substantial impact on market conditions.”

Vise previously noted that the FMCSA’s non-domiciled CDL rule could push roughly 194,000 CDL holders out of the market over two years, a shift that might recreate the tight utilization levels seen in 2021.
“This would be very good for carriers, not very good for shippers,” he added.

Vise also pointed out that stepped-up enforcement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement could add even more pressure on capacity, though the full impact is still unclear.

“We expect pressure on foreign drivers to be a significant factor for capacity in the coming months, but many questions remain about the scope and speed of the tighter CDL and English language enforcement on the truck freight market,” he said.

Equipment and Driver Supply Getting Tighter

Tim Denoyer, vice president and senior analyst at ACT Research, said the driver market is no longer oversupplied but not yet tight. According to ACT’s Driver Availability Index, a reading below 40 typically precedes rate increases, and the index is approaching that threshold again.

“The new rules on non-domiciled drivers could tighten driver capacity over the next one to two years, but heavy truck tariff costs are starting to constrain equipment capacity,” Denoyer said.

Class 8 production data backs that up. Denoyer noted that tractor builds are expected to fall roughly 35% in the second half of the year, dropping several thousand units per month below what fleets need to maintain size.

ACT Research believes that reduced capacity combined with steady freight demand could speed up the next market cycle and lead to new for-hire opportunities.
However, Denoyer cautioned, this recovery will not happen overnight. “This transformation will take time,” he said.

For drivers and carriers who have weathered the slow freight cycle, these tightening conditions may signal that a long-awaited rebound is finally taking shape, one load at a time.

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) is applauding the Senate’s unanimous decision to officially recognize September 14–20, 2025, as National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.

ATA President and CEO Chris Spear emphasized just how much the country relies on professional drivers:

“When every convenience and necessity is available on a store shelf or just a click away, it can be easy to overlook America’s 3.6 million truck drivers who pull off this logistical feat day after day. Our reliance on truckers is absolute, and our appreciation for them should be as well. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week provides the opportunity for Americans to give them the gratitude they richly deserve. We applaud Senators Boozman and Kelly for leading the bipartisan effort to recognize the extraordinary hard work, dedication, and sacrifice of America’s professional drivers.”

The resolution was introduced by Senators John Boozman (R-AR) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), who both underscored the vital role truck drivers play in everyday life.

Sen. Boozman called drivers both essential and a point of pride for his state:

“Truck drivers are the backbone of our economy and a source of pride for our state. These men and women spend long hours away from their families to deliver the goods that keep our communities moving. Trucking touches most facets of modern life, and I am proud to lead the Senate in showing professional truck drivers gratitude and respect.”

Sen. Kelly echoed that sentiment, pointing to the daily impact of drivers in Arizona and beyond:

“Arizona’s truck drivers are the reason our grocery shelves stay stocked, our hospitals get critical supplies, and our businesses reach their customers. They put in long hours on the road, away from their families, to keep our economy moving. I’m proud to join Senator Boozman in recognizing the hard work and sacrifice of these men and women during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.”

The Senate’s bipartisan resolution highlights the importance of America’s 3.6 million professional truck drivers and the sacrifices they make to keep goods moving across the nation.

A new documentary series, DRIVEN, sheds light on the hardworking professionals who keep America’s wheels turning through every challenge. Produced by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) in collaboration with ACT 1 and the Texas Trucking Association Foundation, DRIVEN explores the critical role trucking plays in maintaining the nation’s supply chain.

Telling the Industry’s Story

“We believe trucking has storytelling potential that few other industries can match,” said Jeremy Kirkpatrick, ATA’s vice president of public affairs and strategic communications. “This industry touches lives in every community and corner of our country — from the North Slope of Alaska, to the rolling hills of New England, to the streets of South Dallas. These stories need to be told – not only to celebrate the skill, resilience, and humanity of these incredible pros who run the nation’s supply chains, but also to ensure trucking always has a seat at the table when government officials are making decisions that affect our industry and the broader economy.”

DRIVEN is part of ATA’s “Nothing Without Trucking” (NWT) campaign, which seeks to educate policymakers and the public on trucking’s indispensable role in daily American life. The series begins with professional drivers but will later spotlight the interconnected network of roles that power the sector.

A Glimpse Into Unique Trucking Lives

From precision driving champions to individuals building success in underserved communities, DRIVEN delivers deeply human stories. The pilot episodes follow three remarkable individuals whose lives epitomize dedication and resilience in our nation’s trucking industry.

Meet the cast of the pilot episodes:

Roland Bolduc – A FedEx driver who has twice earned the title of National Truck Driving Championships Grand Champion. Roland’s success is a testament to his focus on precision driving and commitment to safety.

Tiffany Hargraves – A single mother who braves the Dalton Highway, one of America’s most treacherous routes stretching across Alaska’s North Slope. Her independence and determination mirror the spirit of the trucking profession.

Germany Williams – After earning a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Germany transformed his fortune and founded the South Dallas Driving Academy, a program dedicated to breaking systemic barriers to licensing and creating equal opportunities in underserved communities.

“DRIVEN offers a rare and powerful look at our industry—and our nation—through the eyes of the professionals who keep it moving,” said Nikki Thomas, ATA’s vice president of industry affairs. “ATA is proud to bring their journeys to the screen, celebrating their unwavering commitment to excellence and the transformational impact of trucking. Perhaps most exciting of all is that we’re just getting started, with so many more stories still to tell.”

Join the Journey

Audiences are invited to watch DRIVEN’s trailer and subscribe to the DRIVEN YouTube channel to catch every new episode. The series aims to inspire and educate, giving viewers an intimate look into a vital industry that connects every corner of the country.
