“Women can do anything.” – Andrea McFarland

Andrea McFarland’s remarkable career in the trucking and logistics sector exemplifies that women can achieve anything they set their sights on. In a recent episode of the She Drives on Radio Nemo, Andrea, a prominent figure at NFI, opens up about her personal and professional path in an industry increasingly seeing women rise to prominence. With a deep-rooted family history in trucking, Andrea’s narrative is filled with passion, tradition, and barrier-breaking achievements.

A Legacy of Trucking

Andrea’s introduction to the trucking world was almost inevitable. The host comments:

“When you were a kid and you would get to visit work. So this is quite almost literally in your blood and kind of all you know.”

From a young age, Andrea was immersed in the industry, accompanying her father, who has spent over 30 years working, including 27 years with NFI. She fondly remembers after-school hours spent at the Lawnside and Vineland shops with her father.

“He would take me into the shop, and I would just sit there and watch him talking to the drivers and working on the trucks. The relationship he had with them felt so welcoming.”

This early exposure to both the technical and community aspects of trucking ignited Andrea’s interest. Her memories include joining her father on nighttime road calls to assist drivers with mechanical issues.

“He’d be like, ‘Hey, 9 o’clock on a Wednesday night, you want to come on this road call with me?’ And I’d hop in the truck with him, and we’d play games on the way.”

These experiences instilled in Andrea a lasting respect for the profession. Her father’s dedication went beyond repairing trucks—it was about forging relationships and fostering a sense of community.

Crafting Her Own Career Path

Inspired by the influence of her father and uncle, each with extensive careers at NFI, Andrea awaited her chance to join the company. She began her career at a Pennsylvania truck stop, familiarizing herself with the drivers and biding her time for the right moment. That opportunity arose four years ago when she stepped into NFI’s safety department.

“I started as a safety person, worked in that department for two years, and then a dispatcher position opened up. I knew I wanted it.”

Two years into her role as a dispatcher, Andrea’s enthusiasm for her job and colleagues is evident:

“I love my job. I love the drivers I work with, I love everything about it. They make my job so much easier,” she says, giving a shoutout to her team.

Andrea attributes her achievements to NFI’s supportive environment, where management and even the CEO prioritize employee welfare.

“They’re always there to make sure all your needs are filled,” she shares.

Women Paving the Way in Trucking

The trucking industry is evolving as more women step into leadership roles and Andrea is proud to contribute to this shift. What was once a male-dominated field is now welcoming more female leaders and proving their essential role.

“It’s very empowering…it’s becoming less and less of a ‘Wow, a woman in trucking,’ and more of the standard,” Andrea says.

Andrea participates in the Women in Trucking convention annually, celebrating and empowering women in every facet of the industry. She is determined to show other women that success in logistics is well within reach.

“A lot of women probably don’t think they can do this, but we’re proving that we can, every day.”

Personal Triumphs and Professional Growth

On the episode, Andrea also announced a personal triumph—purchasing her first home. As she nears her 30th birthday, she balances a thriving career with significant personal developments.

“I’ll be 30 in June…and I’m about to move into my own house,” she reveals, excited yet busy with this new chapter.

Her hosts celebrated her achievement, emphasizing that buying a house is indeed a milestone worth honoring. Andrea’s commitment to her career, family, and personal aspirations highlights her relentless drive to advance, both in life and within the industry.

Andrea’s evolution from a young girl observing her father in the truck shop to a dispatcher at NFI is a powerful narrative of perseverance, passion, and breaking down barriers. Her story serves as a testament that women can do anything and are thriving in fields like logistics every day.

Welcome to the world of Less-than-Truckload (LTL) trucking! Whether you’re a seasoned driver or new to the field, mastering LTL can significantly enhance your career. Unlike full truckload (FTL) shipping, LTL involves transporting multiple smaller shipments from various customers on one truck. This complexity requires a unique set of skills and strategies. Here are some tips to help you excel in LTL trucking:

Organize and Plan Ahead

LTL trucking demands impeccable organization. Here’s how to stay ahead:

Pre-Plan Routes: Efficient routing minimizes delays and maximizes delivery efficiency. Use advanced GPS and routing software to find the best paths.

Load Planning: Arrange your cargo based on delivery schedules and locations. Place the last deliveries in the front and the first deliveries at the back to streamline unloading.

Master the Art of Docking

Docking can be challenging in urban areas and tight spaces. Practice makes perfect:

Precision Parking: Sharpen your skills by practicing in various docking scenarios. The better you become at precise parking, the smoother your deliveries will be.

Communication: Maintain clear communication with dock staff. They can assist in guiding you into tight spots and unloading your truck efficiently.

Efficient Time Management

Time is a critical factor in LTL trucking. Here’s how to manage it effectively:

Strict Schedules: Stick to your schedule as closely as possible. Delays in one delivery can cascade and affect the rest of your route.

Break Management: Plan your breaks wisely. Use them for necessary rest without disrupting your delivery timelines.

Enhance Customer Service Skills

In LTL trucking, you’ll interact with multiple customers daily. Good customer service can set you apart:

Politeness and Professionalism: Always be courteous and professional. A positive attitude can go a long way in building relationships with clients.

Problem-Solving: Be prepared to handle issues such as delivery discrepancies or damaged goods. Quick and effective problem-solving can enhance customer satisfaction.

Safety First

Safety is paramount in any trucking job, but especially in LTL due to frequent stops and varying cargo types:

Secure Loads: Ensure that all shipments are properly secured to prevent movement and damage during transit.

Regular Inspections: Conduct regular checks on your vehicle and cargo. Address any issues immediately to avoid accidents or delays.

Stay Updated with Technology

Use technology to streamline your LTL operations:

Load Tracking: Use tracking systems to monitor your shipments and provide real-time updates to customers.

Fleet Management Software: These tools can help you with route planning, load optimization, and maintenance schedules.

Adaptability and Flexibility

LTL trucking often involves unexpected changes. Be prepared to adapt:

Stay Informed: Keep abreast of weather conditions, traffic updates, and industry news.

Flexibility: Be ready to adjust your plans as needed. Flexibility can help you handle last-minute changes without stress.

Continuous Learning

The trucking industry is constantly evolving. Stay ahead by continuously improving your skills and knowledge:

Training Programs: Participate in training sessions and workshops to learn new techniques and regulations.

Networking: Connect with other LTL drivers to share experiences and tips. Learning from fellow professional drivers can provide valuable insights.

Mastering LTL trucking requires a blend of strategic planning, excellent customer service, safety consciousness, and continuous learning. By honing your skills in these areas, you can navigate the complexities of LTL trucking efficiently and boost your career. Remember, every delivery is an opportunity to improve and excel.

Are you a truck driver looking to explore new, exciting career prospects or relocate for better, long-term driving opportunities? As the backbone of the transportation industry, truck drivers play a crucial role in keeping goods moving across the country. While you can find a great driving career in almost any state, here are five states known for their thriving trucking industries and abundance of job opportunities:

1.Texas:

Known for its vast, open expanses and bustling cities, Texas offers a wealth of opportunities for truck drivers. With a thriving economy driven by industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and agriculture, the Lone Star State constantly demands skilled drivers to transport goods across its extensive road network. Cities like Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio serve as major hubs for trucking activity, providing many job openings and chances for competitive salaries.

2. California:

Despite its traffic congestion, California has one of the largest and most diverse trucking industries in the nation. Home to busy ports, agricultural farmlands, and vibrant urban centers, the Golden State presents a variety of job opportunities for truck drivers. Whether you’re hauling produce from the Central Valley, delivering goods to cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, or transporting cargo to and from the state’s numerous ports, California offers a dynamic and rewarding trucking landscape.

3. Florida:

With its strategic location as a gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, Florida stands out as a prime destination for truck drivers. The Sunshine State’s economy, driven by industries such as tourism, agriculture, and international trade, fuels a constant demand for transportation services. From delivering goods to tourist destinations like Orlando and Miami to transporting agricultural products across the state’s farmlands, Florida offers a diverse array of trucking opportunities.

4. Illinois:

The truck driving industry is always changing and evolving as the world around it changes and evolves. It’s crucial for truck drivers to stay informed, adaptable, and focused on how the industry is changing. The year 2024 brings its own set of challenges and opportunities, and professional drivers must be prepared to face them head-on. Here is some essential advice that every truck driver should consider in 2024 to ensure a successful and fulfilling journey on the road.

Embrace Technology: In 2024, technology continues to revolutionize the trucking industry. From advanced GPS systems to electronic logging devices (ELDs) and telematics, embracing technology can streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance safety. Stay updated on the latest advancements and leverage technology to your advantage, but never let it replace your instincts or ability to make sound decisions on the road.

Prioritize Safety: Safety should always be the top priority for truck drivers. In 2024, with increased traffic congestion, changing road conditions, and evolving regulations, it’s more important than ever to prioritize safe driving practices. This includes following speed limits, maintaining a safe following distance, getting proper rest, and staying vigilant behind the wheel. Remember, arriving safely is more important than arriving quickly.

Take Care of Your Health: Truck driving can be physically and mentally demanding, but neglecting your health is not an option. In 2024, prioritize self-care by eating well, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. Consider investing in comfortable seating accessories to minimize strain and discomfort during long hours behind the wheel. Your health is your most valuable asset, so make it a priority.

Stay Informed and Adaptable: The trucking industry is dynamic, with regulations, routes, and market conditions constantly changing. In 2024, stay informed about industry trends, regulatory updates, and changes in the supply chain. Be adaptable and willing to pivot when necessary, whether it’s adjusting your route to avoid traffic or finding alternative delivery options. Keeping abreast of industry developments will help you stay ahead of the curve.

Cultivate Relationships: Trucking is not just about driving from point A to point B; it’s also about building relationships with customers, dispatchers, fellow drivers, and industry professionals. In 2024, prioritize communication and collaboration to foster strong relationships that can support you throughout your career. Whether it’s sharing best practices, offering assistance, or seeking advice, cultivating relationships can enrich your trucking experience.

Plan for the Future: As you navigate the road in 2024, it’s essential to plan for the future and set yourself up for success. Whether you’re considering advancing your career, investing in additional training, or saving for retirement, having a clear vision and strategy can help you achieve your goals. Take advantage of resources and opportunities for professional development, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mentors or industry experts.

As truck drivers drive throughout 2024, it’s important to stay aware of the industry around you. By remaining committed to excellence, you can navigate the road ahead with confidence, resilience, and success. Safe travels!

Maximizing your earnings is essential for achieving financial stability and reaching your long-term career goals as a truck driver. There are various strategies and tactics you can use to increase your paycheck and take more money home. Here are some practical tips and techniques that truck drivers can use to boost their earnings and improve their financial well-being.

Explore High-Demand Routes: One of the most effective ways to increase your paycheck as a truck driver is to seek out high-demand routes. Certain regions or industries may offer better pay rates or more consistent work opportunities that will allow you to earn more. Researching and identifying these routes can help you prioritize assignments that offer higher earning potential and even allow you to optimize your schedule for maximum profits.

Consider Specialized Freight: Truck drivers who specialize in niche or specialized freight often earn higher earnings. Hauling hazardous materials, oversized loads, or refrigerated goods may give you access to higher rates due to the specialized equipment or certifications required to haul that freight.

Negotiate Rates Wisely: Don’t hesitate to negotiate rates with freight brokers or shippers to ensure you’re being compensated fairly for your services. Understanding market rates, fuel costs, and other expenses can empower you to negotiate more effectively and secure better-paying contracts. Building strong relationships with reliable clients can also lead to repeat business and opportunities for negotiating favorable terms.

Maximize Your Time: Time management is crucial for maximizing your earnings as a truck driver; they go hand in hand. Minimize downtime by planning efficient routes, optimizing your schedule for high-demand periods, and avoiding unnecessary delays. Make use of technology tools such as GPS systems and route optimization software to streamline your operations and minimize idle time, allowing you to complete more jobs and increase your overall earnings.

Invest in Professional Development: Continuously improving your skills and qualifications can open doors to higher-paying opportunities in the trucking industry. Consider pursuing additional certifications, endorsements, or training programs that enhance your skillset and make you more competitive in the market. As we mentioned before, specialized skills such as handling hazardous materials or operating specialized equipment can get you better pay rates and increase your earning potential.

Maintain Your Equipment: Properly maintaining your truck and equipment is essential for maximizing your earnings as a truck driver. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent costly breakdowns or delays that can eat into your profits. Invest in quality equipment and prioritize preventive maintenance to ensure your vehicle remains reliable and efficient, allowing you to stay on the road.

Increasing your paycheck as a truck driver requires a combination of strategic planning, efficient operations, and ongoing professional development. By exploring high-demand routes, considering specialized freight opportunities, negotiating rates wisely, maximizing your time, investing in professional development, and maintaining your equipment, you can boost your earnings and achieve greater financial success. With dedication, perseverance, and a proactive approach, you can take control of your financial future and enjoy a rewarding and lucrative career as a truck driver!

It offers the opportunity to work with a diverse range of cargo, navigate various transportation modes, and contribute to the efficient movement of goods across the country. If you’re considering transitioning into intermodal driving or starting your career in this field, this blog is for you. Here, we’ll explore what intermodal driving entails, the requirements to get started, and tips for success.

Understanding Intermodal Driving

Intermodal driving involves transporting freight containers using multiple modes of transportation, such as trucks, trains, and ships. These containers can carry anything from consumer goods to raw materials, making intermodal driving essential for global trade and supply chain logistics. As an intermodal driver, you’ll be responsible for picking up containers from rail yards, ports, or distribution centers and delivering them to their final destinations.

Requirements and Qualifications

Before pursuing a career in intermodal driving, it’s essential to make sure you meet the specific requirements and qualifications. These may include:

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): You must have a valid CDL issued by your state of residence to operate commercial vehicles, which includes the trucks used in intermodal transportation.

Intermodal Endorsement: Some companies may require drivers to get an intermodal endorsement on their CDL. This endorsement typically involves additional training and testing specific to intermodal operations.

Clean Driving Record: Employers often prefer candidates with a clean driving record, free of serious violations or accidents.

Physical Fitness: Intermodal driving can be physically demanding, involving loading and unloading containers. Maintaining good physical fitness is essential for this type of driving career.

Familiarity with Regulations: Intermodal drivers must comply with various regulations governing transportation, including hours-of-service rules, weight limits, and hazardous materials regulations. It’s essential to know these regulations and be able to comply.

Tips for Intermodal Success

Once you’ve met the necessary requirements and decided that a career in intermodal driving is for you, here are some tips to help you excel.

Safety First: Prioritize safety in all aspects of your job. Follow proper loading and securing procedures, adhere to speed limits, and practice defensive driving techniques to prevent accidents and injuries.

Continuous Training: Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and regulations through ongoing training programs. This will help you enhance your skills and allow you to remain competitive in the job market.

Efficient Time Management: Intermodal operations often involve tight schedules and deadlines. Effective time management skills are crucial for completing deliveries on time and maximizing productivity.

Attention to Detail: Pay close attention to container documentation, including shipping manifests, bills of lading, and inspection reports. Accurate paperwork ensures smooth transactions and customer satisfaction.

Adaptability: Intermodal driving presents diverse challenges, from navigating congested urban areas to handling inclement weather conditions. Stay flexible and adaptable to effectively deal with unexpected situations on the road.

Starting a career in intermodal driving can open up exciting opportunities for professional growth and advancement. You can thrive in this dynamic industry by understanding the requirements, honing essential skills, and prioritizing safety and efficiency. Here are 10 valuable certificates that can help you elevate your career and stand out in the competitive world of trucking.

HAZMAT Endorsement: Hazardous materials transportation is a specialized field, and obtaining a Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) endorsement on your commercial driver’s license (CDL) can broaden your horizons. It allows you to transport a wide range of hazardous materials, making you an asset to companies involved in chemical, pharmaceutical, and other industries.

Tanker Endorsement: If you’re hauling liquids or gases, a Tanker Endorsement is a must. This certificate signifies your expertise in safely transporting liquids, enhancing your marketability and enabling you to take on diverse hauling assignments.
