Cassandra Fuller, a cashier at a TravelCenters of America location in Holbrook, Arizona, has received TAT’s 2026 Harriet Tubman Award after helping a woman who escaped an abusive situation and sought refuge at the truck stop.

The award, sponsored by WEX, was announced October 27 during the WEX OTR Summit in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. It recognizes individuals in the trucking, bus, and energy industries whose actions help protect people from human trafficking and exploitation.

Fuller Helped Woman Reach Emergency Services

The incident occurred in mid-February when a woman entered the Holbrook travel center barefoot, injured, and covered in dirt. According to TAT, she had escaped from a man who had been holding her against her will and assaulting her.

After jumping from a vehicle along the highway, the woman made her way toward the travel center’s lights. Fuller approached her, learned what had happened, and brought her into a back office where she could remain away from public view.

Fuller stayed with the woman while they contacted 911 and waited for police and emergency medical personnel. She also informed travel center management.

The woman subsequently received medical attention at a nearby medical center, and authorities later apprehended the man involved, according to the organization’s account.

Recognition for an Act of Compassion

Fuller was unable to attend the October 27 ceremony but submitted a video expressing her appreciation. She said helping the woman was more important to her than receiving public recognition.

“I didn’t do it for fame, fortune, or recognition,” Fuller said. “I did it because human trafficking is real, lives are being stolen.”

She added that she had not expected the incident to receive further attention and learned about her award nomination months afterward.

Fuller has worked for TravelCenters of America at locations in Arizona and Louisiana over approximately 10 years. Her connection to trucking began well before her employment with the company. Her father spent 30 years as a truck driver, while her mother worked at a truck stop for the same length of time.

TravelCenters of America trains more than 18,000 employees annually using TAT’s human trafficking awareness materials.

Harriet Tubman Award Recognizes Transportation Industry Employees

TAT, formerly known as Truckers Against Trafficking, works with transportation companies, drivers, and other industry professionals to identify and respond to suspected human trafficking.

The Harriet Tubman Award recognizes individuals in the trucking, bus, and energy industries whose actions have helped people experiencing exploitation or prevented trafficking. The annual honor includes a $5,000 cash award and a trophy.

Matt Crumpton, vice president of OTR National Account Sales at WEX, recognized Fuller’s response during the ceremony, describing her actions as an example of the compassion and courage the award was established to honor.

TAT offers free training and educational resources for trucking professionals through its official website.

The TDUSA editorial team creates practical, driver focused content covering trucking news, industry updates, safety, regulations, and career information for professional truck drivers across the United States.
