										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Texas Trucking Association (TXTA) recognized professional drivers, safety leaders, technicians and motor carriers for their commitment to highway safety during its annual <a href="https://www.texastrucking.com/contests-and-award-programs/">Safety and Maintenance Awards</a> Luncheon, held July 30 as part of the association&#8217;s 2026 Annual Conference in San Antonio.</p>
<p>The awards celebrate individuals and companies that have demonstrated outstanding performance in commercial vehicle safety, maintenance and professionalism while highlighting the role that drivers, technicians and fleet safety programs play in reducing crashes and improving highway safety.</p>
<p>&#8220;The individuals and organizations recognized at TXTA&#8217;s Annual Safety and Maintenance Luncheon represent the very best of the trucking industry,&#8221; TXTA President and CEO John D. Esparza said in a statement. &#8220;Their commitment to safety, professionalism, and operational excellence helps strengthen our industry and protect everyone who shares the road. We are honored to recognize these outstanding leaders for the example they set every day.&#8221;</p>
<h1><strong>Driver of the Year Honors Professional Excellence</strong></h1>
<p>Kevin Mann Sr. of Hansen &amp; Adkins Auto Transport was named the 2026 TXTA Driver of the Year, an award sponsored by Tenstreet.</p>
<p>The association selects its Driver of the Year from nominees submitted by member companies. Drivers are evaluated using several factors, including accident-free driving history, professionalism, consistency, and years of service. As the state recipient, Mann will represent Texas in the American Trucking Associations&#8217; National Driver of the Year competition.</p>
<h2><strong>Safety Leadership Awards Recognize Industry Contributions</strong></h2>
<p>Several individuals were recognized for their contributions to safety management and the trucking industry.</p>
<p>Jay Ferguson of McRay Crane &amp; Rigging received the Distinguished Safety Award, sponsored by Bair Hilty P.C. and Transafe Inc., recognizing leadership in promoting fleet safety and protecting lives and property.</p>
<p>The C.H. Cheshire Award, sponsored by Commercial Fleet Data Systems, was presented to Sgt. Tim Davis of the Texas Department of Public Safety for his support of the TXTA Safety Management Council and his efforts to promote safer highways throughout Texas.</p>
<p>Bethany Hobbs of Lee Trans received the Distinguished Award for Excellence in Service, honoring her dedication to the Safety Management Council, the trucking industry and the motoring public.</p>
<p>Robert Pontious of Pressure Systems International earned the Fleet Maintenance Council Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding service and leadership within the commercial vehicle maintenance profession.</p>
<h3><strong>Texas Crowns Its Top Truck Driving Champions</strong></h3>
<p>The association also announced winners of the 2026 Texas State Truck Driving Championships, where professional drivers compete in written examinations, pre-trip inspections and driving skills competitions.</p>
<p>Matthew &#8220;Logan&#8221; Montandon of FedEx earned the title of State Grand Champion after also winning the Straight Truck division.</p>

<p>The annual Texas Challenge competition also honored outstanding commercial vehicle enforcement personnel.</p>
<p>Corporal Kaleb Rains of the Texas Department of Public Safety was named DPS Grand Champion, while Justin Scott of the Houston Police Department earned MCSAP Grand Champion honors.</p>
<h5><strong>Technician Competition Highlights Maintenance Excellence</strong></h5>
<p>TXTA also recognized the state&#8217;s top heavy-duty commercial vehicle technicians through its Technician of the Year Contest, which has showcased maintenance professionals since 1982.</p>
<p>Competitors complete hands-on testing and technical evaluations designed to measure diagnostic ability, repair knowledge and problem-solving skills.</p>

While the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration establishes minimum cargo securement standards, the way a load is secured often depends on what is being transported. A securement method that works for one type of freight may not provide adequate protection for another.</p>
<p>Understanding how cargo securement requirements change based on freight type helps reduce the risk of shifting loads, damaged freight, roadside violations, and crashes.</p>
<h1>Every Load Must Meet Federal Cargo Securement Standards</h1>

<p>The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced that the truck arresting system opened on July 1 along westbound Loop 375 (Transmountain Road) near the Interstate 10 interchange. The ramp is designed to safely stop runaway trucks experiencing brake failure while descending the mountain corridor.</p>

Whether crossing the Rockies, the Sierra Nevada, or the Appalachian Mountains, these routes challenge drivers in ways that flat highways never can. Steep grades, changing weather, high elevations, and long descents demand planning long before the truck reaches the summit.</p>
<p>While every mountain road presents its own challenges, a handful of routes have earned lasting reputations throughout the trucking industry. Their names come up in conversations at truck stops, safety meetings, and dispatch offices because drivers know exactly what they demand behind the wheel.</p>
<h1>The Climb Gets Attention, but the Descent Earns Respect</h1>
<p>Colorado&#8217;s Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel is one of the best-known examples.</p>
<p>Interstate 70 climbs toward the Continental Divide before reaching the tunnel at more than 11,000 feet above sea level. At that elevation, engines work differently, weather changes quickly, and traffic can shift from dry pavement to winter conditions in a short distance.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Commercial traffic moving through Michigan no longer requires navigating remaining state seasonal weight limits after the Michigan Department of Transportation officially lifted the final active restrictions Friday morning.</p>
<p>According to MDOT, the remaining spring weight restrictions on all state trunkline highways ended at 7 a.m. Friday, bringing the state’s 2026 frost law season to a close.</p>
<p>The restrictions applied to state-maintained highways carrying interstate, U.S. highway, and Michigan route designations.</p>
<h1>Seasonal Restrictions Help Protect Roads During Spring Thaw</h1>
<p>Michigan applies seasonal weight restrictions each year during spring thaw periods when roadbeds become more vulnerable to damage caused by heavier axle loads.</p>
<p>During frost thaw cycles, moisture beneath pavement weakens roadway structures, making certain routes more susceptible to cracking, rutting, and long-term surface damage under commercial traffic.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The American Trucking Associations has selected 20 professional drivers to serve as the 2026 2027 America’s Road Team Captains, recognizing individuals whose careers reflect consistent safety, professionalism, and leadership behind the wheel.</p>
<p>Over the next two years, these drivers will represent the trucking industry across the country. Their work includes attending industry events, engaging with communities, visiting schools, and speaking with policymakers to promote safe driving while sharing firsthand insight into trucking as a career.</p>
<p>“This group of professional drivers have earned their place at the top through years of hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to safety on the road,” said ATA President and CEO Chris Spear. “They represent a vital segment of the American workforce, one whose impact is felt by nearly every person in the country. As these Captains take to the road with a new mission and an important message, we are incredibly proud of their achievements and confident the nation will gain valuable insights from their leadership and the example they set for our industry.”</p>
<h2><strong>A Longstanding Program Focused on Safety</strong></h2>
<p>America’s Road Team was established in 1986 to recognize professional truck drivers who have demonstrated exceptional safety records and a commitment to representing the industry with integrity. With the support of their companies, Captains volunteer their time to participate in public outreach efforts that help explain the role trucking plays in everyday life.</p>
<p>The 2026 2027 class represents 13 states and includes four military veterans, one independent contractor, and drivers from both small fleets and large national carriers. Together, the group brings 51 million miles of safe driving experience to the program.</p>
<h3><strong>Volvo Trucks Celebrates 25 Years Supporting America’s Road Team</strong></h3>
<p>Volvo Trucks remains the program’s sponsor and will mark 25 years of partnership with America’s Road Team this October. During their two-year term, the Captains will travel the country in ATA’s Interstate One Image Truck, a Volvo VNL 860 pulling an American flag themed trailer. The trailer features a mobile classroom and a state of the art truck driving simulator used for education and outreach.</p>
<p>“Volvo Trucks is honored to continue our long-standing sponsorship of America’s Road Team and to take part in this week’s selection of the 2026–2027 Captains,” said Volvo Trucks North America President Peter Voorhoeve. “This year at MCE marks 25 years of Volvo’s proud support of America’s Road Team, a milestone that reflects our deep respect for professional drivers and our commitment to safety, professionalism, and leadership across the trucking industry. America’s Road Team is one of the most visible groups of professional truck drivers in the country, and we believe their hard work and dedication pays.”</p>
<h3><strong>How the 2026 2027 Captains Were Selected</strong></h3>
<p>ATA conducted the final round of selections from January 18 through January 20 at its headquarters in Washington, DC. During this process, drivers were evaluated on more than just miles logged or years of experience.</p>
<p>Candidates were judged on their ability to clearly communicate about trucking, safety, and transportation issues, as well as their overall driving records. The selection panel included trucking industry executives and members of the trade press, ensuring the final group reflected both operational excellence and the ability to represent the industry publicly.</p>
<p>Once selected, the new Captains received their signature navy blue America’s Road Team blazers and immediately began their work as ambassadors. Their focus over the next two years will be on improving public understanding of trucking and reinforcing the industry’s commitment to safety and professionalism.</p>
<h3><strong>Supporting the Mission of America’s Road Team</strong></h3>
<p>Trucking professionals and industry partners can support the work of America’s Road Team by following the Captains throughout their two year term and engaging with them at major industry events, conferences, and community visits. ATA also encourages industry members to follow the team’s journey on Facebook, where updates from the road and event appearances are shared.</p>
<p>“America’s Road Team Captains exemplify the highest standards of safety in our industry, helping to elevate trucking’s image by sharing their experiences and leading by example,” said ATA Chief Operating Officer Dan Horvath. “These respected leaders craft compelling safety messages and demonstrate how the trucking industry offers meaningful, rewarding careers. Through their participation in community events, conferences, and industry engagements, they fulfill the mission of America’s Road Team. We congratulate this new class for their dedication to excellence and for keeping our nation moving safely.”</p>
