Bridgestone Americas has introduced the Firestone FS592 steer tire, designed to help truck drivers get more miles, improve durability, and reduce downtime. Built as the successor to the FS591, this tire is made for both long-haul and regional trucking operations.

The FS592 comes in four sizes, is EPA SmartWay certified, and features Bridgestone’s next-generation ENLITEN technology. With an extra 32nd of tread depth and a wider footprint, it delivers more removal miles than the previous model.

According to Bridgestone, “The FS592 will officially replace the FS591 and builds upon its predecessor’s reputation for durability with 17% longer life. On average, it will deliver 18,000 more miles than its predecessor; a casing engineered with the company’s next-generation ENLITEN technology to deliver added durability, greater retreadability, and improved rolling resistance; and defense grooves and an optimized shoulder rib to help control wear balance and combat against tearing.”

The tire also features a five-rib tread design to ensure even wear across different road conditions, helping drivers maintain safe handling while extending the life of their tires.

For truckers, this means fewer stops for tire maintenance, more predictable wear, and longer-lasting performance on both highways and regional routes.

Volvo Trucks North America recently subjected its latest flagship, the all-new Volvo VNL, to one of the toughest vehicle validation programs worldwide. This intensive testing took place in Fairbanks, Alaska — a region notorious for brutal winters where temperatures regularly plunge to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (-40°C).

Pushing Boundaries in Extreme Cold
To guarantee that the next-generation VNL truck meets the highest standards of performance, reliability, and driver comfort, Volvo’s testing team braved some of the most severe winter conditions on the planet.

“Alaska is one of the harshest places on Earth to operate a truck, and that is exactly why we are here,” explained Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “We test in extreme environments so when our customers face unpredictable conditions, they can count on their Volvo to perform.”

Testing Beyond the Lab Walls
Every year, Volvo’s cold weather testing team embarks on a demanding journey spanning more than 3,000 miles from Colorado up to Alaska. This extended field test lasts several months and covers a variety of driving conditions, mimicking the real-world challenges truck drivers face daily.

From long-distance highway stretches to congested urban routes with frequent stops, the all-new VNL endures a comprehensive evaluation aimed at refining its capabilities. Experienced professional drivers—many with decades navigating Alaska’s toughest terrains—offer invaluable feedback, paired with real-time data collected by Volvo engineers. This combination allows fine-tuning of everything from engine response to in-cab ergonomics.

The Crucial ‘Cold Soak’ Test
One of the hallmark procedures in this validation process is the “cold soak.” Here, trucks are left outside overnight with engines off, allowing all components to reach Arctic-level subzero temperatures. After 12 hours in this frozen state, the expectation is that the truck will start effortlessly and operate as seamlessly as drivers would need in real, harsh conditions.

Voorhoeve emphasized the importance of this real-world testing approach: “The all-new VNL was designed to change everything and that includes how we approach testing and refinement in real-world conditions – to challenge our trucks and gain insights that would be impossible to replicate in a lab. What we learn in Alaska helps us deliver a truck that is not only innovative but proven where it matters most: on the road, in the real world, and in the hands of our customers.”

Built for North America’s Diverse Environments
According to Volvo’s official press release, the VNL was purpose-built for the wide-ranging North American landscape. Its design draws inspiration from five distinct biomes: urban centers, deserts, prairies, coastal forests, and the Arctic tundra. This ensures the truck is well-equipped for demanding coast-to-coast operations, capable of handling up to 3,000 miles across diverse climate zones.

Volvo Trucks North America has earned the prestigious Red Dot Award for its groundbreaking design of the all-new Volvo VNL, emphasizing the brand’s ability to merge aesthetics, innovation, and functionality in the trucking industry.

“When most people hear design, they think of automotive or fashion, not heavy-duty trucks. However, for our team, design plays a critical role in everything from fuel efficiency to driver comfort,” shared Brian Balicki, head of design at Volvo Trucks North America. “With the all-new Volvo VNL, we started with a blank sheet of paper and reimagined the truck from the ground up. The streamlined, wedge-shaped cab and dramatically sloped windshield are not just visually striking, they reduce aerodynamic drag and help deliver up to 10% better fuel efficiency compared to the legacy model. Inside, we transformed the driving environment and sleeper into a space that feels more like a home away from home.”

Cutting-edge redesign and features

Revealed in January 2024, the all-new Volvo VNL represents six years of intensive research and represents a complete rethinking of the long-haul truck. With a nearly 90% redesign from its predecessors, the truck offers enhanced productivity, safety, profitability, and sustainability, addressing the demands of the North American freight transport sector.

The Volvo VNL is visually distinguished by its dynamic lines, aerodynamic efficiency, and innovative wedge-shaped profile. Its curved windshield reduces drag, while the angled front grille, headlights, and intakes enhance both form and function. Volvo described this design as “a significant industry shift” that exemplifies its brand strengths.

Inside the cabin, driver-focused features fuel innovation. An all-new 24-volt electrical system hosts technologies like dynamic displays, a Camera Monitor System, inductive charging, and task/ambient lighting. Comfort is redefined with customizable cab configurations, upgraded materials, and amenities like versatile bunk setups and airline-inspired window shades designed to meet drivers’ needs.

Revolutionizing the driver experience

“The all-new Volvo VNL was designed to change everything for heavy-duty trucks, and we evaluated every detail of the driver experience from selecting materials that provide a premium look and feel to incorporating innovative safety features that help protect drivers in case of an accident,” remarked Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Winning this prestigious design award validates the six years of dedication that went into transforming our flagship VNL model. We created a vehicle that not only connects with customers but also delivers exceptional performance and comfort.”

The design innovations are aimed at creating a driver experience that reflects their needs on the road, earning praise from drivers and the broader trucking industry along the way.

About the Red Dot Award

The Red Dot Design Award is a globally celebrated mark of recognition, honoring exceptional design across industries. Originating in Essen, Germany over 70 years ago, it spans 51 categories, including vehicles, electronics, household goods, and more. Winning the Red Dot Award reflects not only design excellence but also innovation and functionality.

The official award announcement will occur on July 8 at the Designers’ Night hosted at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen.

Volvo Trucks continues to push industry boundaries, setting a new standard for functionality, comfort, and design with the Volvo VNL.

Truck tech just took a big step forward—Mack Trucks has launched the MyMack app, designed to give drivers remote access to their Mack Pioneer highway truck. The app brings key vehicle info and select controls right to your phone, making it easier to stay on top of your rig whether you’re in the cab or not.

Built to work with the all-new Mack Pioneer—first revealed in April—this new app is all about making life on the road more efficient, comfortable, and connected.

“The Pioneer was designed with the driver experience as a top priority, offering features like our exclusive premium seating system with armrests on both sides, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a customizable switch layout,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “The MyMack app extends this driver-centric philosophy beyond the cab, giving drivers unprecedented control and information access even when they’re away from their truck.”

Here’s what drivers can do with the MyMack app:

Check fuel, DEF, and oil levels remotely

Monitor vehicle lights status

Turn on the Mack Integrated Parking Cooler to pre-set cab temperature before your shift starts

“The MyMack app represents a significant advancement in how drivers interact with their vehicles,” said Patrick Brown, director of strategy, Mack Trucks. “By putting vital truck information and controls literally in the palm of their hands, we’re helping drivers get the job done more efficiently and safely, while improving their overall experience.”

Part of Mack’s Bigger Connected Platform

The MyMack app is part of Mack’s larger Integrated Uptime bundle, which includes Mack Connect—an all-in-one fleet management portal now standard on the Pioneer. With Mack Connect, drivers and fleet managers can track truck location, review fuel efficiency and idle time, and even see which drivers are coasting too much or braking too hard.

“Mack Connect is built for Mack customers to provide them with more detailed information than they can get elsewhere,” Brown said. “We’re enabling fleet managers to make data-driven decisions that streamline their operations, while maintaining our commitment to maximizing uptime.”

Mack Connect also helps with safety and diagnostics. It monitors seatbelt usage, roll stability events, and braking habits—giving fleets better data for coaching and compliance. Plus, it includes GuardDog Connect, Mack’s diagnostic system that tracks issues, recommends repairs, and even handles over-the-air updates to reduce downtime.

With a five-year intro bundle available and apps ready to download in the Apple Store and Google Play, the MyMack app could be a real game-changer for anyone driving a Pioneer.

Kenworth revealed a cutting-edge performance hood for the T880S set-forward front axle configuration during NTEA Work Truck Week 2025 in Indianapolis. This advanced hood design boosts the T880S lineup by accommodating higher-horsepower engines and addressing the needs of intense applications like heavy-haul and logging.

Source: Kenworth

Built for Power and Performance

The new T880S Performance Hood boasts increased length and a larger cooling package than both the standard T880S and T880 hood, making it compatible with Cummins’ X15 engine, offering up to 605 hp and 2,050 lb.-ft. of torque. This enhancement, tailored for high-GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) environments, allows the T880S to take on more challenging tasks.

While the T880S comes standard with Paccar’s MX-13 engine, the performance hood unlocks new possibilities for customers needing exceptional performance. To maintain engine efficiency in demanding conditions, the cooling module size expands to 1,440 square inches, and airflow has been precisely tailored for superior cooling efficiency.

The updated hood configuration measures 121.7 inches bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC) and features a 31.5-inch bumper setting with the standard bumper. This design improves weight distribution and ensures compliance with bridge formula regulations while providing a 16-inch axle spread increase compared to the T880 with a set-back front axle.

Expanding Powertrain Versatility for Customers

The four available hood configurations in the T880 series now include the T880, T880 MX-Optimized Hood, T880S MX-Optimized Hood, and the powerful T880S Performance Hood. Kenworth’s inclusion of the Performance Hood provides more options for clients needing high-power engines.

“For our customers that require maximum truck power for their operation or those seeking more powertrain options for the T880S, this hood allows for more customers to utilize the T880S in new ways,” said Kyle Kimball, Kenworth director of marketing.

He added, “The T880S is the favored configuration for customers in ready-mix, dump, and other applications where staying compliant with bridge-formula laws is a concern. By allowing more powertrain options for the T880S Performance Hood, customers with the highest power or payload demands can take advantage while still maintaining excellent visibility with the sloped hood design.”

Durable and Innovative Design Features

The new T880S hood combines durability with signature Kenworth style. Made with Metton material, this hood ensures resilience in tough vocational applications. For added practicality, its 5-piece construction allows for more affordable and efficient repairs in conjunction with other T880 models.

Key design elements include polished or black aluminum mesh grille options, a sleek stainless steel grille surround, stainless steel fender closeout panels, and chrome or black air intake spears. These design touches blend rugged aesthetics with functional performance, creating a bold presence while maximizing utility.

Kenworth’s latest performance hood continues to cement the T880S model as the go-to truck for power, performance, and reliability in demanding industries like heavy-haul, logging, and construction. This enhancement ensures Kenworth remains at the forefront of delivering solutions tailored for high-performance trucking needs.

Peterbilt has built its reputation as a leader in durability, performance, and American craftsmanship. At the heart of it all is the company’s Denton, Texas manufacturing plant—a state-of-the-art facility where every Peterbilt truck comes to life. Functioning since 1980, this plant remains the only site producing Peterbilt’s renowned heavy-duty trucks.

For truck drivers, fleet managers, and truck enthusiasts alike, understanding the meticulous craftsmanship of a Peterbilt truck gives deeper insight into the precision and innovation that fuel the industry.

A Look Inside the Denton Manufacturing Facility

Located just north of Dallas-Fort Worth, the Denton factory spans an impressive 600,000 square feet and houses a dedicated team of thousands. This plant serves as the sole manufacturing center for Peterbilt’s current line of new trucks. With an efficient assembly line that produces up to 160 trucks daily, it’s a hub of productivity and technology.

In November 2022, Peterbilt reached an incredible milestone—it produced its 750,000th truck in Denton, a clear testament to the company’s enduring legacy and the growing demand for its vehicles.

How a Peterbilt Truck Is Made

Every Peterbilt truck begins with a concept carefully engineered to perform seamlessly on the road. Here’s an overview of the process that transforms these designs into some of the world’s most iconic trucks.

Designing and Tailoring for Perfection

Peterbilt doesn’t believe in one-size-fits-all. Each truck is made to precise customer specifications based on its intended purpose—whether it’s a sleeper cab for long-haul journeys, a day cab for short commutes, or a specialized vocational truck. Every element, including powertrain configurations, cab features, and aerodynamics, is customized to meet unique needs.

The Foundation—Chassis & Frame Creation

The truck’s skeleton comes together in the chassis, which serves as its backbone. Every frame is built and inspected at the Denton plant to guarantee its structural strength. Once complete, the frame is outfitted with axles, suspension, fuel tanks, and other critical elements required for a strong foundation.

Crafting the Cab & Interior Comforts

Peterbilt cabs balance advanced automation with skilled hand assembly, ensuring attention to detail at every step. Interiors are fitted with driver-centric features such as ergonomic seating, advanced dashboard controls, and premium insulation for noise reduction. Stringent quality checks ensure every button, gauge, and feature is built to withstand the demands of the road.

Installing the Power Under the Hood

No truck is complete without the horsepower to back it up. Peterbilt trucks feature PACCAR engines for optimum performance. Customers can choose between the fuel-efficient MX-11 and the power-packed MX-13, ensuring the right balance of power and productivity. At this stage, key components like transmissions, cooling systems, and exhaust setups are installed.

Finishing Touches with Paint & Detailing

Peterbilt’s iconic trucks are as striking as they are reliable. The painting process is approached with precision, creating a durable, corrosion-resistant finish that ensures long-lasting style and protection.

Rigorous Inspections Before the Road

Every Peterbilt truck undergoes comprehensive quality checks before leaving Denton. Simulated road tests, mechanical inspections, and leak tests are carried out to ensure that every truck meets the highest safety and performance standards.

Visiting the Peterbilt Plant

Curious about the inner workings of the Denton facility? Good news—the Peterbilt plant offers guided tours for the public. Visitors can walk the production floor, observe the PACCAR Production System in action, and witness the remarkable effort that goes into crafting these legendary trucks. It’s a must-see experience for anyone passionate about trucks or manufacturing.

The Denton factory isn’t just about assembling vehicles. It’s the intersection of engineering expertise, craftsmanship, and cutting-edge innovation. Every corner of this facility is designed to uphold Peterbilt’s heritage while paving the way for the future of trucking.

Peterbilt trucks, built in Denton, represent more than machinery—they’re a testament to the dedication that drives the trucking industry forward. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a Peterbilt or simply admire one as it glides down the highway, knowing what goes into its creation deepens your appreciation for these mechanical marvels.

When it comes to the trucking industry, Mack and Peterbilt are two powerhouse names that have earned the trust and loyalty of countless drivers. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or new to trucking, understanding the contrasts and commonalities between these brands can clarify which is best suited for your needs. Below, we take a detailed look at Mack and Peterbilt trucks by comparing their performance, design, and overall value.

Brand Background

Mack Trucks

Founded in 1900, Mack Trucks is a brand synonymous with toughness and durability. Now part of the Volvo Group, Mack focuses on manufacturing heavy-duty trucks tailored for challenging jobs, including construction, logging, and off-road applications. Their no-nonsense approach and robust builds make them a staple in industries that demand reliability.

Peterbilt

Peterbilt got its start in 1939 and has since become a symbol of premium truck quality. Acquired by PACCAR in 1958, Peterbilt specializes in highly customizable trucks, making them a top choice for long-haul drivers. With their attention to detail and superior craftsmanship, Peterbilt trucks have garnered a reputation for exceptional value and comfort.

Engine and Performance

Mack:

Mack relies on its proprietary MP series engines, including the MP7 and MP8, which are designed for power and reliability. These engines offer horsepower ratings of up to 505 and torque up to 1,860 lb-ft, making them a perfect match for heavy-duty vocational work. Built with durability in mind, Mack trucks are well-suited for tough tasks.

Peterbilt:

Peterbilt trucks come equipped with PACCAR MX-series engines like the MX-13 and MX-11, with options for Cummins engines as well. These engines deliver up to 510 horsepower and 1,850 lb-ft of torque. Ideal for highway applications, Peterbilt engines are engineered to balance performance with fuel efficiency, keeping drivers comfortable during long hauls.

Design and Comfort

Mack:

Mack trucks are renowned for their functional and rugged designs. With practical features like breakaway mirrors, ergonomic seating, and ample storage space, Mack emphasizes utility over luxury. While their interiors are straightforward, they provide the durability and practicality needed for hard-working environments.

Peterbilt:

Peterbilt trucks shine when it comes to customization and driver comfort. Their interiors feature advanced digital dashboards, high-end finishes, and options for premium materials. Peterbilt cabins are designed with the driver in mind, offering a level of comfort that makes them a favorite among long-distance haulers.

Fuel Efficiency

Mack:

Mack has made significant strides in improving fuel efficiency. Models like the Mack Anthem feature aerodynamic designs and advanced powertrain technologies that help reduce fuel consumption. These innovations make Mack a competitive choice for operators looking to cut operational costs.

Peterbilt:

Peterbilt prioritizes fuel economy through aerodynamic designs and lightweight materials. Their PACCAR MX engines, combined with advanced engineering, enhance efficiency without compromising performance. Long-haul drivers often appreciate the savings and sustainability offered by Peterbilt’s thoughtful approach to fuel management.

Durability and Reliability

Mack:

Durability is where Mack truly excels. Built for rough environments, Mack trucks are a common sight in industries like construction and logging, where trucks need to withstand heavy workloads and challenging terrains. Their legendary toughness ensures reliable performance under stress.

Peterbilt:

Peterbilt trucks are equally reliable but stand out for their longevity and premium craftsmanship. While they’re not specifically built for rugged vocational roles, their robust construction and attention to detail make them exceptionally durable. Peterbilt delivers reliability with an added layer of comfort and refinement.

Cost and Resale Value

Mack:

For buyers on a budget, Mack offers a more affordable upfront cost compared to Peterbilt. Additionally, maintenance costs are generally manageable, making Mack trucks an appealing choice for vocational applications where cost-effectiveness is key.

Peterbilt:

Peterbilt trucks come with a higher initial price tag but excel in retaining their resale value. This makes them a smart long-term investment for those wanting premium quality and the ability to recoup costs when it’s time to upgrade. Their balance of durability and comfort enhances their long-term market demand.

Choosing Between Mack and Peterbilt

When deciding between Mack and Peterbilt, the choice depends largely on your specific needs and priorities:

Mack Trucks: Ideal for heavy-duty tasks, Mack focuses on practicality, ruggedness, and reliability. Industries such as construction and logging will especially benefit from Mack’s durable design.

Peterbilt Trucks: Perfect for long-haul drivers, Peterbilt emphasizes comfort, customization, and efficiency. Their high-end interiors and premium build quality cater to those spending long hours on the road.

Understanding the strengths of Mack and Peterbilt trucks helps to highlight why both brands continue to be strongholds in the trucking industry. Mack’s toughness and utility make it a top choice for demanding environments, while Peterbilt’s blend of reliability and driver-focused design appeals to those prioritizing comfort and efficiency.
