There comes a point during a long driving day when your body lets you know it’s been sitting long enough.

Maybe it’s the first step out of the cab after fueling. Maybe your lower back tightens when you stand up, or your shoulders feel stiff after hours of gripping the steering wheel. Those aches aren’t unique to trucking. Health experts say prolonged sitting naturally shortens some muscles while others become stiff from staying in the same position for extended periods.

Stretching isn’t about becoming more flexible than the next driver at the truck stop. It’s simply one way to help your body recover before climbing back into the seat. Here are five stretches that target the areas many drivers notice first after spending hours on the road.

Start With Your Hips

If climbing down from the cab feels harder than climbing in, your hips are often the reason.

Sitting keeps the hip flexors in a shortened position for hours at a time. Physical therapists frequently point to tight hip flexors as one of the most common effects of prolonged sitting because they can also contribute to stiffness in the lower back.

A kneeling hip flexor stretch is one of the simplest ways to loosen the area. Step one foot forward, keep your back upright, and gently shift your weight until you feel a stretch across the front of the opposite hip. The movement should feel controlled. If you find yourself forcing it, you’ve gone too far.

Don’t Forget the Back of Your Legs

Truck drivers spend most of the day with their knees bent, which means the hamstrings rarely get a chance to fully lengthen.

After parking, place one heel on a curb, trailer step, or another stable surface and hinge forward from your hips while keeping your back straight. You should notice the stretch in the back of your thigh, not in your lower back. Once you’ve finished, take a few seconds to stretch your calves by stepping one foot behind the other and pressing the back heel into the ground. Those muscles spend the day working the accelerator, brake and clutch, so it’s common for them to tighten after a long shift.

Give Your Shoulders a Chance to Reset

Driving encourages the same posture hour after hour. Your hands stay in front of you, your shoulders gradually roll forward, and your upper back does more work than you probably realize.

Instead of immediately climbing back into the truck after a break, stand tall, clasp your hands behind your back and gently pull your shoulders backward as you lift your chest. A few slow shoulder rolls afterward can also help relieve some of the tension that builds across the upper back during a long day behind the wheel.

Ease the Stiffness Out of Your Neck

Mirror checks, lane changes and hours of watching traffic all ask a lot from a relatively small group of muscles.

Rather than rolling your neck in circles, slowly lower one ear toward your shoulder until you feel a gentle stretch along the opposite side of your neck. Hold the position, return to the middle, and repeat on the other side. The goal isn’t to see how far your neck will move. The goal is simply to reduce some of the stiffness before getting back on the road.

Let Your Lower Back Move Again

Standing up after several hours of sitting is often when drivers notice their lower back the most.

Instead of immediately bending forward, try restoring movement first. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart, place your hands on your hips, and slowly rotate your upper body from side to side. Follow that with a few gentle backward bends if they feel comfortable. Slow, controlled movement is usually more helpful than aggressive stretching when your back has been in one position all day.

Consistency Matters More Than Duration

You don’t need a yoga mat or a 30-minute workout to benefit from stretching. Spending a few minutes moving around while fueling, during a break, or after parking for the night can be enough to reduce some of the stiffness that builds throughout the day.

Experts recommend stretching major muscle groups regularly, moving slowly, avoiding bouncing, and stopping if a stretch becomes painful rather than simply tight. If you have a previous injury, chronic pain or another medical condition, it’s best to speak with your healthcare provider or physical therapist before adding new stretches to your routine.

Life behind the wheel asks a lot from your body. Giving those muscles a few minutes to loosen up before the next stretch of highway may not change your schedule, but it can make the miles ahead feel a little more comfortable.

The Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) has teamed up with Hope Zvara, founder of Mother Trucker Yoga, to roll out a new wellness program created specifically for professional drivers. The initiative, known as the CDL Wellness Academy, is designed to give drivers realistic tools and strategies to stay healthy while managing life on the road.

“CVTA’s focus on increasing safety and opportunity in the industry led us to consider ways to support the health of drivers, and to do so in a way that will work for them in the real world through bite-sized pieces of information that are actionable,” said Andrew Poliakoff, CVTA’s executive director. “We’ve also seen schools and carriers that are interested in making this a reality.”

Mother Trucker Yoga isn’t your standard workout plan. Built from Hope Zvara’s own experience overcoming health challenges, the program focuses on simple, sustainable changes that drivers can use. Zvara, a nationally recognized wellness expert and best-selling author, created her platform with one clear goal: to help drivers feel better, move better, and live better.

Instead of long workouts or gym memberships that don’t fit a driver’s lifestyle, Mother Trucker Yoga offers quick three- to five-minute routines. Filmed in real-world settings, the videos are easy to follow and require no special equipment. Exercises focus on mobility, energy, stress relief, and overall well-being, making them practical for anyone behind the wheel.

“Hope’s energy and expertise were a great fit for a partnership, and we’re excited to see the program make a difference, especially as new drivers are beginning their careers,” Poliakoff added.

Through CVTA’s dedicated wellness portal, drivers can now enroll in a structured, self-paced course. The program begins with a personal health assessment and continues with four focused modules:

Everyday Movement Essentials

Fuel and Food for Better Health

Four Exercises Every Driver Should Do Daily

Managing Stress and Sleep for Better Health

The CDL Wellness Academy was built to be flexible and realistic, helping professional drivers take control of their health without losing valuable time on the road.
