If you’re using a Walker or SR ELD in your truck, it’s time to make a change. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has officially removed both devices from its list of approved ELDs, and drivers now have a limited window to switch to compliant systems.

Which ELDs Were Affected?

The two devices taken off the approved list are:

Walker ELD – Model WAL-R, ELD Identifier WLK790

SR ELD – Model SR-E, ELD Identifier SRE288

Both were removed for failing to meet the technical requirements FMCSA sets for electronic logging devices.

What Drivers Are Required to Do

If you’ve been using either system, you’ll need to stop immediately and begin logging hours using paper logs or compliant logging software while you transition to a new device. FMCSA is giving drivers and carriers until September 29, 2025, to switch over to a registered ELD.

If you continue using one of the revoked devices past that date, you’ll be considered out of compliance. That includes potential citations for not maintaining a valid record of duty status and the risk of being placed out of service under CVSA guidelines.

What If the Device Companies Fix the Issues?

According to FMCSA:

“If the ELD providers correct all identified deficiencies for their device, FMCSA will place the ELD back on the Registered Devices list and inform the industry and the field of the update,” FMCSA said. “However, FMCSA strongly encourages motor carriers to take the actions listed above now to avoid compliance issues in the event that these deficiencies are not addressed by the ELD provider.”

In other words, don’t wait for a fix that might not happen. If you’re running with one of these devices, start the switch now to avoid downtime or violations later.

Why It Matters

This move follows the earlier removal of multiple ELDs earlier this year. With FMCSA continuing to crack down on non-compliant technology, drivers and fleet managers must stay updated. Checking your ELD’s registration status regularly can help avoid major disruptions and keep you compliant on the road.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced the removal of two additional electronic logging devices (ELDs) from its list of registered devices. The Mountain ELD and XELD have been officially moved to the Revoked Devices list after failing to meet the minimum requirements outlined in 49 CFR Part 395, Subpart B, Appendix A. This change became effective as of Dec. 18, 2024.

With these latest updates, the total number of ELD removals this past week has risen to six.

What Motor Carriers Need to Do Now

FMCSA is actively notifying motor carriers using these revoked ELDs. If your company uses Mountain ELD or XELD, the following steps must be taken to stay compliant:

1.Stop Using the Revoked ELDs

Discontinue the use of both Mountain ELD and XELD immediately and switch to either paper logs or a logging software solution to continue recording hours of service (HOS) data without disruption.

2. Replace Devices Before Feb. 16, 2025

Choose a compliant ELD from the FMCSA’s Registered Devices list and ensure the replacement process is completed within the given 60-day timeline.

Motor carriers that fail to replace these devices by Feb. 16, 2025, will face penalties for noncompliance.

Potential for Device Reinstatement

The FMCSA has clarified that the providers of Mountain ELD and XELD can address the deficiencies identified during the review. If the issues are resolved, these devices may be reinstated on the registered devices list. Any such updates will be announced by FMCSA to keep the industry informed.

Interim Enforcement Guidance for Safety Officials

Until Feb. 16, 2025, FMCSA encourages compliance officers to avoid citing drivers using Mountain ELD or XELD under the following HOS violations during the transitional period:

395.8(a)(1): “No record of duty status”

395.22(a): “Failing to use a registered ELD”

Instead, officials are asked to accept:

Paper logs,

Logging software, or

The revoked ELDs themselves as an interim method for verifying HOS data.

However, as of Feb. 16, enforcement will tighten. Motor carriers found using the revoked ELDs beyond this date will be considered as operating without an ELD. At that point, drivers could face penalties under 395.8(a)(1) and be placed out-of-service (OOS) in line with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Criteria.

FMCSA Urges Proactive Compliance

FMCSA is urging motor carriers not to delay action. Addressing this issue promptly will help companies avoid compliance issues if the current deficiencies are not resolved by the affected ELD providers.

For further guidance and updates regarding ELD compliance, visit the official FMCSA ELD website.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has recently revoked the approval status of three electronic logging devices (ELDs).

On Monday, November 18, FMCSA revealed that the Keep Tracking, Rollingtrans ELD – ACCURATE ONE, and Rollingtrans ELD Plus – ACCURATE PLUS had been removed from their roster of sanctioned devices.

The removal was due to these ELDs not complying with the minimum standards outlined in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A. Specifically, this regulation mandates that “an ELD without a printer be designed so that the display may be reasonably viewed by an authorized safety official without (the official) entering the commercial motor vehicle.”

Truck operators using any of the three disapproved ELDs have until January 17, 2025, to replace these devices with compliant alternatives. Failure to do so will leave them with a “no record-of-duty status” and result in being placed out of service.

Until the deadline, carriers relying on the now-invalidated ELDs should revert to “using paper logs or logging software” to document their hours-of-service data. FMCSA also advised that, in the interim, “safety officials are encouraged not to cite drivers using these revoked ELDs” for lacking a registered device or having no record-of-duty status.

Should the ELD providers rectify all the noted shortcomings, the devices can potentially return to the approved list. However, FMCSA notes that such corrections are infrequent, urging motor carriers to proactively “take the actions listed above now to avoid compliance issues in the event that the deficiencies are not addressed by the ELD providers.”

To date, FMCSA has revoked 14 ELDs this year for similar reasons. Among these, only one device has regained approval.

Presently, there are 1,018 devices on the FMCSA’s Registered ELDs list, all self-certified by their manufacturers to meet federal requirements. While FMCSA doesn’t officially endorse these devices, the current certification process has led to challenges for carriers in maintaining compliance.

In November 2022, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association urged the FMCSA to develop a robust certification system for ELDs, stating that the existing self-certification process has proven a “major disservice to motor carriers.”

Beyond self-certification, FMCSA permits ELD manufacturers to “self-revoke” non-compliant devices. Currently, there are 242 ELDs on the revoked list; out of these, only 31 were directly removed by FMCSA, with the rest categorized as “self-revoked.”
