Truck safety technology has seen significant development in recent years, providing tools that enhance monitoring, vehicle performance, and protection on the road. Each system addresses a different aspect of driving and truck operation. Here are some of the main innovations currently in use.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Helping Not Replacing Drivers

Lane departure warnings and automatic emergency braking deliver alerts and automated responses when potential risks are detected. Data indicates that trucks equipped with these systems experience fewer preventable incidents.

Fatigue Monitoring Systems

Fatigue detection technology tracks eye and head movement to monitor alertness. On extended routes, this technology can identify signs of drowsiness to support safer operation.

ELDs Keeping Track to Stay Safe

Electronic Logging Devices automatically record driving and rest hours. This ensures compliance with Hours of Service regulations and provides consistent documentation for driver activity.

Predictive Maintenance and Smart Sensors Prevent Issues Before They Become Crises

Sensors monitor key components, including tires, brakes, and cargo stability. Early identification of potential problems allows for timely maintenance and reduces the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns.

Stronger Cabs and Enhanced Visibility Direct Protection During Crashes

Newer truck models include reinforced cabs, airbags, and digital mirrors. These features improve visibility and provide structural support during collisions.

AI and Telematics Real-Time Safety

Artificial intelligence integrated with telematics systems tracks vehicle performance and driving patterns. Fleets using these systems report measurable reductions in preventable incidents and more detailed maintenance insights.

Why This Matters

Truck safety innovations cover multiple aspects of driving and vehicle management. Awareness of these tools provides drivers and fleet managers with factual knowledge about the equipment and systems present on the road. For fleets, these technologies support operational reliability and management oversight.

Despite today’s market being one of the toughest stretches in recent memory, a new survey shows that a growing number of truck drivers are feeling hopeful about what’s ahead — and much of that optimism is being driven by technology.

According to a recent Truckstop.com survey of more than 500 U.S.-based freight carriers, 60% of drivers say they’re feeling positive about the future of the industry. And it’s not just wishful thinking — drivers are pointing to real improvements thanks to tools that are finally starting to lighten the load.

From AI-powered route planning to better fraud protection, truckers are seeing the upside of newer tech in their daily work. Decision-making is becoming quicker, more accurate, and a lot less stressful. That means less second-guessing on dispatches, fewer headaches from scams, and smoother trip planning overall.

“What we found is that carriers are adopting technology faster than ever, and they’re seeing the results,” said Todd Waldron, vice-president of carrier experience. “From stronger fraud prevention to smarter routing, tools like the ones we’re building are giving carriers more confidence and control over their operations.”

Younger drivers are especially leaning in. Nearly 70% of all respondents — and 79% of those under 35 — say they’re comfortable using the latest tech tools. That includes everything from electronic logging devices (ELDs) and AI-based dispatch tools to advanced telematics and predictive maintenance systems that help catch problems before they sideline a rig.

When asked what’s going to shape the next five years in trucking, three things rose to the top: fuel prices, freight availability, and — you guessed it — technology. AI, in particular, is expected to bring the most impact to route optimization, dispatch efficiency, and maintenance planning.

In a job where every minute and mile count, these tools aren’t just bells and whistles anymore — they’re turning into essentials. And for many drivers, that’s a step in the right direction.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced on January 8, 2025, that six electronic logging devices (ELDs) have been removed from the agency’s list of registered devices.

The following devices have been added to the Revoked Devices List:

BLUE STAR ELD

ROAD STAR SOLUTIONS

United ELD

Speed ELD

Two TrackEnsure ELD models

According to FMCSA, these devices have been removed due to their failure to meet the minimum standards outlined in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A. The revocation officially takes effect immediately.

Next Steps for Motor Carriers

FMCSA has confirmed it will issue an industry-wide email notifying motor carriers of the steps required for compliance. If you are currently using one of the affected ELDs, you’ll need to do the following:

Stop using the revoked ELDs immediately. Switch to paper logs or logging software to track your hours of service data temporarily.

Replace the devices. Ensure you install compliant ELDs listed on FMCSA’s Registered Devices list by March 9, 2025.

The FMCSA has provided motor carriers with a 60-day grace period to remove and replace the revoked devices.

Can the Revoked ELDs Be Reinstated?

If the affected ELD providers address and correct the reported deficiencies, their devices may be reinstated on FMCSA’s list of registered devices. If reinstated, the FMCSA will inform the industry of the update.

During this interim period, enforcement officers are encouraged to avoid citing drivers using the affected devices for violations such as 395.8(a)(1) (No record of duty status) or 395.22(a) (Failing to use a registered ELD). Instead, they may review driver records through paper logs, logging software, or even the revoked device, used as a back-up display method, to ensure hours of service data is available.

What Happens After March 9, 2025?

Beginning March 9, motor carriers continuing to use any of the listed revoked devices will face non-compliance penalties. Safety officials encountering drivers with these devices on or after this date will:

Cite violations under 395.8(a)(1).

Place drivers out-of-service (OOS) per the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Out-of-Service Criteria.

It is strongly recommended that motor carriers take proactive action now to avoid compliance issues, especially if the deficiencies for these ELDs are not resolved by their providers in time.

Recently, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) revealed the removal of two electronic logging devices (ELDs) from its official registry. This action impacts a model of Blue Star ELD and Reliable ELD.

The FMCSA clarified that both devices have been placed on the Revoked Devices list due to non-compliance with the regulations established in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A.

In a statement, Blue Star ELD explained that one of its previous ELD versions faced revocation back in May, but it was reinstated shortly after a system upgrade. Although the FMCSA’s registry continues to list the BSE version of Blue Star ELD, the BRS model was formally revoked as of August 15. A representative from Blue Star indicated that the revoked model was tied to their legacy system and expressed unawareness of any recent changes regarding their newer models.

Attempts to reach Reliable ELD for a response regarding this announcement have not yet been successful.

For truck operators and owner operators currently relying on the revoked ELDs, they must immediately stop using these devices and transition to either manual logs or logging software to accurately document their hours of service. Furthermore, it is essential for them to replace these revoked ELDs with compliant alternatives listed on the FMCSA’s Registered Devices roster by October 14.

Motor carriers are granted a 60-day transition period to upgrade from the revoked ELDs to compliant models. Should the ELD manufacturers address the noted issues, the FMCSA may consider reinstating these devices on the registry and will provide updates to the industry.

During this grace period, safety officials are instructed not to penalize drivers utilizing the revoked ELDs under sections 395.8(a)(1) (“No record of duty status”) or 395.22(a) (“Failing to use a registered ELD”). Rather, enforcement officers should request alternative documentation, such as paper logs or logging software, or can depend on the ELD display to confirm hours-of-service data.

Starting September 14, any carriers still operating with the revoked devices will be marked as non-compliant and classified as operating without an ELD. Safety officials who encounter such situations on or after September 21 are directed to cite these carriers under section 395.8(a)(1) and to take the driver out of service, following the FMCSA’s guidelines.

In a decisive move, the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Appropriations has approved a pivotal funding measure for the Department of Transportation alongside other related agencies, passing with an impressive vote of 28-1. This legislation sets forth the budget for Fiscal Year 2025 for the Department of Transportation and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (THUD), closely mirroring key aspects of the House’s THUD appropriations bill, which secured approval earlier this month. Notably absent from the Senate’s version is a controversial provision aimed at curbing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) ability to impose speed limiters on heavy-duty trucks. Furthermore, it sidesteps a clause found in the House bill that aimed to limit states from enforcing trucking hour regulations that exceed federal guidelines, such as the meal and rest breaks instituted in California.

Shared Features of Senate and House Proposals

While differences exist between the two bills, several common attractions unite their proposals:

Increased Truck Parking Funding: Both versions instruct the DOT to leverage discretionary grants to support truck parking initiatives.

Exemptions for Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs): The allocation of funds is restricted from mandating ELD usage for livestock and insect haulers, preserving their statutory exemption.

Restrictions on Inward-Facing Cameras and Apprenticeship Program Registrations: The bills ensure that no funds will be used to enforce the use of inward-facing cameras or to mandate registration with the Department of Labor for participation in the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Program.

Collaborative Cargo Theft Reporting: The legislation mandates the DOT to work with the FBI, Department of Justice, and other agencies to monitor cargo theft trends and devise an effective strategy for prevention.

Guidelines for Towing Practices: A direction is provided for the FMCSA to engage with various stakeholders to establish fair towing and recovery regulations and fee structures.

Chris Spear, President and CEO of the American Trucking Associations, emphasized the association’s commitment by stating, “we will continue to push the Senate to back up its clear statements of support for truck parking and cargo theft with robust funding, and we will seek to ensure that the final conference agreement addresses trucking’s priorities.”

Moving Forward: What Lies Ahead for Both Bills

The House and Senate bills are now awaiting full chamber votes. Should they both progress without amendments, a conference committee will be established to harmonize any discrepancies in the legislation.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently announced that four electronic logging devices (ELDs) have been removed from the official list of registered ELDs.

Affected Devices

The four affected ELDs are:

CTE-LOG ELD

ELD VOLT

POWERTRUCKS ELD

TFM ELD

Reason for Removal

These devices were removed because they did not meet the minimum standards as outlined in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A. Consequently, these ELDs have been added to FMCSA’s Revoked Devices list.

Actions for Motor Carriers and Drivers

Motor carriers and drivers using any of these revoked ELDs must take immediate action:

1. Stop Using Revoked ELDs:

Revert to paper logs or logging software to track hours of service.

2. Replace Revoked ELDs:

Switch to compliant ELDs listed on the Registered Devices list by Sept. 21, 2024.

Motor carriers have a 60-day window to complete this transition. Failure to comply will result in a violation of 49 CFR 395.8 (a)(1), leading to a “No record of duty status” citation and placement of drivers out-of-service according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) OOS Criteria.

Possible Reinstatement

The removed ELDs may be reinstated if the providers address the deficiencies and meet regulatory requirements, enabling them to return to the registered list.

FMCSA strongly encourages motor carriers to act quickly to avoid compliance issues.

The Blue Star ELD, a popular device used for electronic logging by truck drivers, was initially revoked from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) list of registered devices on May 21. However, the agency announced that it has reinstated the Blue Star ELD to its list.

Truck drivers and motor carriers who rely on the Blue Star ELD can now resume using the device if they had stopped its use following the initial revocation. The FMCSA has not disclosed the specific reasons behind the initial revocation of the Blue Star ELD. Nonetheless, the agency indicated that if an ELD provider addresses and corrects any identified deficiencies in their devices, the devices would be eligible for reinstatement on the registered list.

In contrast, the ELD Mandate Plus device, which was also revoked on May 21, continues to be excluded from the FMCSA’s list of approved electronic logging devices.

Ratan Baid, CEO of ELD Mandate expressed that the company is actively working to rectify any deficiencies and reinstate their software. Meanwhile, drivers who were using the ELD Mandate Plus device are required to discontinue its use immediately. These drivers must revert to using paper logs or alternative logging software to document their required hours of service data until further notice.

The reinstatement of the Blue Star ELD suggests that the provider was able to swiftly address whatever issues led to the device’s revocation.

The ongoing status of the ELD Mandate Plus device, however, highlights the FMCSA’s strict adherence to compliance standards for electronic logging devices, highlighting the importance of addressing any deficiencies promptly to ensure continuous use and compliance.

On May 21, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) delisted two electronic logging devices (ELDs), Blue Star ELD and ELD Mandate Plus.

Consequently, drivers and carriers using these devices are mandated to stop using them and resort to paper logs or alternative logging software for recording hours of service data until the ELDs can be replaced by registered devices.

These non-compliant devices must be replaced with ELDs from the approved list by July 20. Currently, 24 ELDs on FMCSA’s revoked devices list remain unlisted despite the agency’s revoking them earlier in the year.

FMCSA did not specify the reasons behind the removal, citing a general failure to meet the minimum requirements set in the regulations for ELDs. Ratan Baid, CEO of ELD Mandate, expressed commitment to resolve any deficiencies or issues in their software to regain compliance.

However, there has been no response from Blue Star ELD regarding their plans to address the issues with their device. Motor carriers are granted a 60-day window to transition to compliant ELDs. If the identified deficiencies that led to the revocation are resolved within this period, FMCSA will reinstate the ELDs on the registered devices list.

During this transition period, safety officials are advised not to penalize drivers using these delisted ELDs. Instead, they should request alternative records like paper logs or logging software.

However, post the deadline of July 20, continued usage of revoked devices will result in citations and drivers being placed out-of-service.

In trucking, theft has traditionally been a tangible threat, with scenarios like fuel siphoning or cargo theft. However, as technology has advanced, so too have the methods of attack. Nowadays, many threats to trucking companies originate in the digital realm.

Cyberattacks targeting the trucking industry have become increasingly prevalent, with hackers exploiting vulnerabilities in electronic logging devices (ELDs) to gain unauthorized access, manipulate data, and disrupt operations. A recent study by researchers at Colorado State University sheds light on the potential risks posed by compromised ELDs.

The study highlights three critical vulnerabilities in commonly used ELDs. Firstly, these devices can be wirelessly controlled, allowing hackers to take control of vehicle systems remotely. Secondly, malicious firmware can be uploaded, enabling attackers to manipulate data and vehicle operations. Finally, there is the potential for a self-propagating truck-to-truck worm to spread through interconnected ELDs, leading to widespread disruptions in commercial fleets.

“The challenges highlighted in our paper are substantial, and we have identified several critical vulnerabilities in a particular ELD model that represents a significant share of the existing market,” said Jake Jepson, systems engineering graduate student and a primary author of the paper. “The manufacturer is working on a firmware update now, but we suspect these issues may be common and potentially not limited to a single device or instance.”

To demonstrate the severity of these vulnerabilities, the research team conducted tests on a 2014 Kenworth T270 Class 6 research truck equipped with a vulnerable ELD. The results underscored the ease with which multiple devices could be hacked through a single compromised ELD, posing significant safety and operational risks to fleets.

“A bad actor who gains access to a wirelessly enabled ELD may be able to quickly spread the malware to other ELDs in its network,” said Stephen Ritzler, transportation and logistics sales manager at CoverWallet. “The viral spread of the malware could give large-scale access to a cybercriminal. They could uncover a lot of sensitive information about the routes and transfer points of high-value loads they may have intentions to commandeer. …They could also interfere with the data related to safe operations of the vehicles,” he added. “This could involve modifying logbook data to incorrectly display hours of use that are beyond the daily limit, which may put the operator of a compromised vehicle at risk for a DOT sanction.”

The implications of such cyberattacks are far-reaching for trucking companies. Apart from potential accidents resulting in increased insurance costs, ELDs are also used to inform safety and insurability assessments by insurers. Therefore, ensuring the security of these devices is paramount.

To address these vulnerabilities, the researchers propose several measures to enhance ELD security. These include disabling unused interfaces, implementing high-entropy default passwords, using secure firmware signing mechanisms, eliminating unnecessary API features, and implementing telematics device firewalls. These recommendations are deemed practical, user-friendly, and cost-effective.

“To address the vulnerabilities identified in our research and effectively prevent truck-to-truck worm attacks in electronic logging devices, a multifaceted approach is required,” the researchers wrote. “This approach encompasses the enhancement of default security settings, implementation of robust firmware integrity and authenticity checks and the elimination of unnecessary and high-risk features.”

Jeremy Daily, the lead researcher, emphasizes the significance of these findings not only for the trucking industry but also for broader infrastructure vulnerabilities as different assets become increasingly interconnected. By addressing these vulnerabilities proactively, trucking companies can mitigate the risks posed by cyberattacks and ensure the safety and security of their operations.

“Our group will continue to develop adaptable security measures, assessments and models that can easily be integrated into existing operations,” Daily said. “These security design patterns can also be utilized over the truck’s lifecycle, from conceptual design to system retirement.”

Late last week, on Feb. 29, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) officially made an announcement regarding the revocation of certification for five electronic logging devices (ELDs) from its registered ELDs list. The affected devices are as follows:

CI ELD Logs from CV Options LLC

CN ELD from ELD Connection

KSK ELD from KSK Group, Inc.

TT ELD 30 from TT ELD Inc.

TT ELD 1010 from TT ELD Inc.

It is noteworthy that both the KSK ELD and the CI ELD Logs devices had experienced prior revocations by the FMCSA and had subsequently been reinstated.

The FMCSA clarified that these ELDs were placed on the Revoked Devices list due to the failure of the respective companies to meet the minimum requirements outlined in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A. This section delineates the “functional specifications” mandated for ELDs.

Carriers and drivers utilizing the revoked devices are mandated to discontinue their use immediately and revert to either paper logs or logging software to record the requisite hours of service data. Furthermore, they are required to replace the revoked ELDs with a compliant device by April 28.

If the identified deficiencies for these ELDs are rectified by the providers within the 60-day period, the FMCSA will reinstate them on the list of registered devices, and the industry will be duly informed of the update.

During this 60-day period, safety officials are advised not to cite drivers using the revoked ELDs for “No record of duty status” or “Failing to use a registered ELD.” Instead, inspectors should request the driver’s paper logs, logging software, or use the ELD display as an alternative method to review the hours of service data, according to the FMCSA.

However, as of April 28, any carrier or driver still utilizing a revoked device will be considered to be operating without a valid ELD.
