Meet the 2026 Elite 11

The 2026 semi-finalists were selected from nominations submitted by trucking carriers, CDL training schools, private fleets and individuals nationwide. This year’s group represents four branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Several of the semi-finalists completed their CDL training through U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship programs, reflecting the continued role apprenticeship pathways play in helping veterans transition into trucking careers.

Registered Apprenticeships Continue to Grow

According to the program’s organizers, about 60% of this year’s nominations came from drivers who are currently participating in or have completed a Registered Apprenticeship program. Five members of the Elite 11 are active apprentices.

Organizers say the apprenticeship model continues to provide veterans with a structured pathway into the trucking industry while helping carriers develop skilled professional drivers.

Winner Will Receive a New Kenworth T680

The overall winner will receive a new Kenworth T680 equipped with a 76-inch sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain, including the PACCAR MX-13 engine, TX-12 automated transmission and DX-40 tandem rear axles.

The truck also includes DigitalVision Mirrors, Bendix Fusion Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Auto Go, Lane Keeping Assist with Torque Assisted Steering, a factory-installed refrigerator and several driver comfort features.

What’s Next?

The semi-finalists will be recognized Sept. 22 and 23 at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio. They will also tour Kenworth’s manufacturing plant in Chillicothe, where the finalists will be announced.

Public voting is scheduled for Nov. 1 through Nov. 11, with the results serving as one factor considered by the selection committee.

The 2026 Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award winner will be announced Dec. 14 during the Veteran Ready Summit at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Each year, employers and CDL training providers nominate rookie veteran drivers who have demonstrated professionalism, safety, and dedication early in their trucking careers.

How the Competition Works

Nominations for the 2026 award opened earlier this year, with employers and credentialing institutions submitting candidates from across the country.

The selection process includes:

August: The “Elite 11” semifinalists are announced.
September: Finalists are selected during events in Columbus, Ohio.
December: One veteran receives the 2026 Driving For Excellence Award along with the keys to a new Kenworth T680.

The program has become one of the trucking industry’s best-known recognitions for military veterans beginning careers in commercial driving.

PodWheels and The Trucker Expand Coverage

Beginning in August and continuing through December, PodWheels plans to release approximately 20 to 25 podcast episodes featuring interviews with semifinalists, finalists, and industry leaders connected to the program.

Founder and executive producer Greg Thompson said the series is designed to let nominees share their own stories while encouraging other veterans to consider trucking as a post-military career. Thompson will also contribute feature articles to TheTrucker.com, expanding on many of the conversations featured in the podcast series.

Onsite Coverage Planned

Charles Jones Jr. is a 20-year U.S. Army veteran who served as an unmanned aircraft systems operator, instructor, standards operator, and platoon sergeant, completing three combat deployments to Iraq and two rotations to South Korea.
A husband to Katrina and father to Alvin and Monica, Jones graduated from the Georgia Driving Academy in December 2024 and began his professional driving career with Roehl Transport in early 2025.

Macy Mattice, U.S. Army (E-4), Melton Truck Lines

Macy Mattice served from 2010 to 2018 as an 88M motor transport operator specializing in heavy equipment transportation.
Originally from Winter Springs, Florida, she now drives flatbed for Melton Truck Lines and lives near Jacksonville with her son, Rusty.

Mark Scriven, U.S. Army (E-6), Stevens Transport

A former staff sergeant and Patriot missile operator/maintainer, Mark Scriven spent nine years in the U.S. Army, earning multiple Army achievement medals and recognition as a combat lifesaver.
Today, he works as a driver and trainer with Stevens Transport, using his leadership experience to mentor new drivers. The father of three also welcomed a daughter in August.

Baughan, from Nunica, Michigan, has served in the U.S. Army since 2004 and continues in the Army Reserve until his upcoming retirement in 2026. His career began in military police before moving into infantry. He has deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan, earning several commendations, including the Purple Heart. His military journey has taken him across Europe and South Korea, holding leadership roles from team leader to senior intelligence sergeant.

Sergeant First Class Charles C. Jones Jr. (Ret.) entered the Army through the Delayed Entry Program after high school in 2004. Over his 20-year service, he worked as an unmanned aircraft systems operator, instructor, standards operator, and platoon sergeant. His career included three combat tours in Iraq and two assignments in South Korea. After graduating from Georgia Driving Academy in late 2024, Jones began his civilian driving career with Roehl Transport in 2025. He and his wife, Katrina, raise two children, Alvin and Monica.

Since 2017, Fastport has teamed up with more than 300 organizations to build out apprenticeship programs that actually work. These aren’t just training checklists—they’re real-world, hands-on experiences that help people build careers in everything from trucking to railroads to maritime jobs.

Over time, the program has expanded to cover 35 different occupations, and it’s still growing. Behind every apprentice is a mix of structure, mentorship, and skill-building designed to open doors and get people hired.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Fastport’s exceeding 27,000 registered apprentices and acknowledge the great work of all of our great industry association partners, like the American Trucking Association, Truckload Carriers Association, The Trucking Alliance, Next Generation Trucking to name a few,” said Dave Harrison, executive director for Workforce Development, Government Programs, and Military Employment Issues at Fastport.

This milestone isn’t just a number—it’s a reminder of how impactful registered apprenticeships can be when done right. For Fastport, it’s another step forward in helping build a strong, reliable workforce in some of the country’s most vital industries.

Celebrating Veteran Drivers

Organized by Kenworth, FASTPORT, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative, this program aims to highlight America’s top rookie military veteran driver. For 10 years, Kenworth has supported the program by offering an impressive grand prize. This year, the winner will take home a Kenworth T680, complete with a 76-inch sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain, featuring the PACCAR MX-13 engine, PACCAR TX-12 automated transmission, and PACCAR DX-40 tandem rear axles.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for this prestigious award, nominees must meet the following criteria:

• Be a legal resident of the continental U.S. and a military veteran or current/former member of the National Guard or Reserves.
• Graduated from a PTDI-certified, NAPFTDS, or CVTA member driver training school with a valid CDL.
• Have been hired as a CDL driver by any for-hire carrier or private fleet committed to hiring veterans after January 1, 2024.

Key Dates

• Semi-Finalists Announcement: August 4
• Finalists’ Experience: Finalists will visit Columbus, Ohio, where they will tour the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, attend a reception, and visit the Kenworth Chillicothe manufacturing plant.
• Public Voting: November 1 to 11
• Winner Announcement: December 12 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

The winner of this nationwide search will drive home in a fully equipped Kenworth T680.
