Most drivers haul freight that stays on the ground. A crew at Kennedy Space Center recently hauled something built to leave it. Freightliner Trucks teamed up with Sierra Space to help move and test the Dream Chaser spaceplane, a vehicle designed to carry cargo to and from low Earth orbit. The work involved towing the spacecraft with a fifth-generation Freightliner Cascadia to confirm how the spaceplane handles a high-speed landing rollout.

The test took place on the fifteen-thousand-foot runway at the Launch and Landing Facility. Before the tow work began, DTNA product validation engineer Nate Fleming hauled Dream Chaser roughly ten miles from NASA’s Space Systems Processing Facility. The careful move positioned the vehicle for the runway portion of the project.

“A lot was riding on this testing,” Fleming said. “Sierra Space trusted me to haul Dream Chaser, and trusted the Cascadia to carry it safely.”

The job required steady acceleration and smooth speed control. Sierra Space set up the test trailer and relied on a standard Cascadia sleeper with a seventy-two-inch raised roof. The truck ran Sierra Space’s programmed test speeds and reached up to seventy miles per hour. The powertrain used a Detroit DD15 engine paired with a DT12 automated manual transmission and Detroit axles to deliver consistent traction across the full runway.

Dream Chaser is built for vertical launch inside a rocket fairing, followed by wing deployment in orbit and a controlled return to Earth. Its landing gear setup includes tandem rear wheels and a single reinforced skid plate to reduce weight and simplify the design. Sierra Space used the tow test to confirm how the landing system behaves during a high-speed rollout.

“Dream Chaser is redefining how cargo moves in space, and that shared spirit of innovation made this partnership a natural fit,” said David Carson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at DTNA.

Sierra Space notes that Dream Chaser’s ability to land on a runway places returned cargo closer to processing teams and distribution points. The tow test supports that mission by proving the vehicle can handle repeated landings under realistic conditions.

“This test is about proving we can land safely, reliably, and repeatedly,” said Klint Combs, vice president of test engineering at Sierra Space.

For truck drivers, the project highlights how a dependable tractor and a skilled operator can support work far beyond everyday freight. In this case, a Cascadia helped push a new spaceplane one step closer to routine missions.

Daimler Trucks North America has issued a recall affecting four truck models due to inadequate air tank capacity, which may compromise braking performance.

The Recall Details

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling select trucks due to a reduced brake performance safety concern. Approximately 68 vehicles are impacted by this recall.

According to the NHTSA, the recall includes specific 2025 models of the following trucks:

Freightliner 114SD

Freightliner Business Class M2

Freightliner Cascadia

Western Star 49X

The issue arises from insufficient air tank capacity, which affects the vehicle’s braking power. This discrepancy means the trucks do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, which governs “Air Brake Systems.”

Resolution Plan

DTNA is currently working on a fix for this problem. Interim notification letters will be mailed to vehicle owners on July 6, explaining the potential safety risks associated with this issue. A follow-up notification will be sent once a proven remedy is available.

What Should Owners Do?

If you own one of the recalled vehicles, you can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 for more information about the recall (reference recall number F1019). You can also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171) or visit their website at nhtsa.gov.

Stay informed and take action to ensure safety on the road!

In the trucking world, not all trucks are built the same. There are two main types of trucks that serve different purposes: vocational trucks and on-highway trucks. Both are essential, but they’re designed for very different tasks. Let’s break down what each of them is, how they’re built, and what makes them unique.

What Makes a Vocational Truck Special?

Vocational trucks are the workhorses of the industry. These trucks are made to take on the toughest jobs, from construction sites to rough, off-road environments. They’re designed with durability and strength in mind so they can handle extreme conditions.

Built to Last: Consider trucks like the Western Star 49X—these heavy-duty vehicles are built with extra-strength frames. They’re made to handle tough work like hauling materials in construction or navigating difficult terrain in mining.

High Torque for Heavy Lifting: Vocational trucks come with powerful engines that provide the torque needed to carry heavy, bulky loads. The design focuses on getting the job done, whether it’s hauling equipment or materials across rugged ground.

Off-Road Ready: These trucks are often equipped with all-wheel drive, which gives them the traction they need to go through muddy or rocky environments. Whether it’s snow, dirt, or rough hills, vocational trucks don’t back down from a challenge.

On-Highway Trucks: Built for the Road Ahead

On the flip side, on-highway trucks are all about getting the job done on smooth roads. These trucks are made for long-haul trucking, so their design focuses on comfort, fuel efficiency, and reliability over long distances.

Efficiency on the Road: Trucks like the Freightliner Cascadia are designed with aerodynamics in mind to cut down on fuel costs. They’re built to be more fuel-efficient, which is a huge deal when you’re driving across miles and miles of highway.

Comfort for Long Hours: Long-haul drivers spend a lot of time in their trucks, so comfort is key. These trucks often feature spacious cabs, advanced climate control, and high-quality seats to keep the driver comfortable through long stretches of highway.

Aerodynamics Matter: On-highway trucks are built for the open road, with features that reduce drag and improve fuel economy. Their design ensures a smooth and steady ride on highways, where speed and fuel efficiency are top priorities.

The 57X, for instance, includes a digital dashboard and steering controls suited for on-highway and vocational applications. Their trucks are equipped with strong braking systems and features like active brake assist, with a focus on off-road and severe-duty performance.

Freightliner:

Freightliner trucks are ideal for long-haul and regional operations. The emphasis on fuel savings and advanced tech makes them favorites among logistics firms aiming to reduce operational costs.

Western Star:

Catering to sectors that demand extreme durability, Western Star trucks excel in environments like construction, mining, and logging. The 47X and 49X models are perfect for off-road and vocational tasks, prioritizing power and resilience over economy and comfort.

Freightliner and Western Star both hold esteemed positions within the trucking industry, yet they fulfill different roles. Freightliner is best suited for those seeking fuel efficiency, comfort, and technological sophistication in long-haul operations. Conversely, Western Star meets the needs of industries requiring formidable strength and endurance in harsh conditions.

A distinguished Marine Corps veteran is all set to receive a brand-new 2022 Freightliner Cascadia truck in Houston, Texas. This award is part of Progressive Insurance’s esteemed Keys to Progress initiative, now in its twelfth year.

Commitment to Veterans

Karen Bailo, Progressive’s commercial lines president, reflects on the program’s impact, stating, “We are celebrating the 12th year of our Keys to Progress program in November and our third semi-truck giveaway—and our impact only continues to grow. We are committed to giving back to our veterans who have given so much to our country. This program not only helps to shape the lives of veterans but also gives them the tools and ability to grow their small businesses. We are proud to be a part of an initiative that is critical to accelerating their journey.”

Spotlight on a Veteran

Retired Gunnery Sergeant Ondrae Meyers, a 22-year veteran from Jacksonville, NC, is the recipient of this year’s semi-truck. Having served in USMC Motor Transport, his military experience sparked a long-standing passion for truck driving. After retiring, Sgt. Meyers acquired his CDL through the “Troops in Transportation” program, aiming to transition from driving to owning a trucking business.

Acknowledgment

Reflecting on the opportunity, Meyers shared, “What started as a passion of seeing countries around the world and in the United States from behind the wheel can be turned into providing for my family. I am so grateful to this program for allowing me to get my fleet and career started.”

Past Recipients

This program has previously helped veterans like James Rogers and Lt. Colonel James “JC” Rose expand their trucking businesses, thanks to partnerships with organizations such as SelecTrucks of Houston, 1-800-Charity Cars, and Veracity Research Co. Investigations.

These collaborations ensure deserving veterans receive these life-changing gifts, which are part of Progressive’s broader mission to drive progress and support veterans through reliable transportation.

Ondrae Meyers, a retired U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Jacksonville, North Carolina, recently celebrated a significant milestone. The 22-year serviceman was awarded a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia and $50,000, thanks to Progressive’s renowned Keys to Progress program, marking its 12th successful year.

Meyers, who served as a Gunnery Sergeant specializing in motor transport, discovered his passion for trucking during his military career. Channeling his expertise, he pursued a CDL license through “Troops in Transportation,” a program dedicated to helping service members transition into civilian careers.

“What started as a passion of seeing countries around the world and in the United States from behind the wheel can be turned into providing for my family,” Meyers shared. “I am so grateful to this program for allowing me to get my fleet and career started.”

Progressive’s Keys to Progress initiative is dedicated to supporting veterans like Meyers, providing them with essential resources to transition into business ownership. The semi-truck giveaway specifically aims to reduce the financial barriers for veterans aspiring to become owner-operators.

Karen Bailo, President of Progressive Commercial Lines, remarked, “We are celebrating the 12th year of our Keys to Progress program in November and our third semi-truck giveaway – and our impact only continues to grow. We are committed to giving back to our veterans who have given so much to our country. This program not only helps to shape the lives of veterans but also gives them the tools and ability to grow their small businesses. We are proud to be a part of an initiative that is critical to accelerating their journey.”

Among the notable past recipients are James Rogers and Lt. Colonel James “JC” Rose, both of whom have expanded their businesses with additional fleet vehicles through the program.

This impactful event was made possible with the collaboration of several organizations:

SelecTrucks of Houston: A comprehensive Freightliner/Western Star dealership providing new and pre-owned commercial trucks, parts, and services.

1-800-Charity Cars: Facilitates vehicle donations, along with titling and registration for recipients.

Veracity Research Co. Investigations: A veteran-owned firm assisting in the annual recipient selection process.

Together, these partners help transform the lives of veterans, paving the way for brighter futures in the trucking industry.
