Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) is issuing an expanded recall for nearly 27,000 Western Star trucks after reports show that the previous battery repair did not fully prevent fire hazards. The recall affects Western Star 47X (2021–2027) and 49X (2020–2027) models, including trucks already repaired under last year’s campaign.

Why These Trucks Are Being Recalled

The issue involves a stud connecting the battery to the starter at the frame rail. If installed incorrectly or corroded, the stud can short circuit, potentially causing a “thermal event,” such as a fire. DTNA estimates only about 1% of the affected trucks actually have the defect, but the risk is serious enough to warrant a full recall.

Signs your truck may have this problem include a slow or no crank when starting or visible corrosion around the battery stud or cable lug.

Trucks Covered in the Recall

The recall covers:

Certain 2021–2027 Western Star 47X trucks and 2020–2027 Western Star 49X trucks built from the start of production through February 3, 2026.

2026–2027 47X and 49X vehicles produced between May 14, 2025, and February 3, 2026, which were manufactured with a revised inspection process meant to fix the problem.

All affected trucks share a particular positive junction point stud that connects the battery or auxiliary power distribution to the starter at the frame rail.

Reports of Melted Frame Rails and Corrosion

DTNA first identified this defect in May 2025. Their initial remedy included adjusting stud torque, applying dielectric paint, and checking cable lug orientation. More than 17,000 trucks were repaired by January 2026.

However, early in 2026, reports surfaced of thermal events and smoke on trucks that had already received the recall fix. One New York truck had corrosion that caused an arced cable, melting the frame rail. Other vehicles showed corrosion at the junction stud even without a thermal event.

Winter Weather Makes Corrosion Worse

The failures were concentrated in “salt belt” states and parts of Canada, where winter road salts accelerate corrosion. DTNA found that even trucks manufactured after the previous fix could still experience corrosion, though no fires were reported.

This led DTNA to expand the recall on February 4, 2026, covering all vehicles affected by the prior recall and those made with the earlier revised process.

What Truck Drivers Should Know

DTNA is developing a new remedy. Owner notification letters will be mailed on April 11, 2026. Drivers should contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 for questions. The recall number is F1029.

Vehicles already repaired under the previous recall will need the updated fix. There have been approximately 52 warranty claims and 18 field reports related to this issue from March 2023 through January 2026. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Two of the largest names in trucking, Volvo Trucks North America and Mack, have issued recalls after discovering a defect related to steering performance.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects nearly 2,500 Volvo VN trucks from model years 2025–26, along with several dozen 2025 Mack Anthems and 2025–26 Mack Pioneers.

At the center of the recall is a problem with the dynamic steering and oversteer guidance feature. The system, designed to help stabilize steering, may malfunction. If the guidance corrects an oversteer input, it could continue pulling the wheel in the opposite direction instead of stopping once balance is restored.

This malfunction raises a serious risk: if the driver doesn’t immediately counteract the steering, control of the truck could be lost. There are currently no warning indicators to alert drivers if their truck has the defect.

Both manufacturers identified the issue in July and launched an investigation. So far, there’s been only one field report related to the defect, and no accidents, injuries, or warranty claims have been tied to the problem.

As of August 11, the recommended fix is to disable the oversteer guidance feature. Volvo and Mack are addressing this through over-the-air software updates. In addition, the feature has already been removed from all new truck orders going forward.

Owners of affected trucks will begin receiving official recall notices on October 5. Both manufacturers also have reimbursement programs in place to cover repairs that may have been completed before the recall was issued.

For questions, owners can contact:

Volvo Trucks customer service at 800-528-6586, recall number RVXX2506

Mack customer service at 800-866-1177, recall number SC0483

NHTSA recall numbers are 25V520 for Volvo and 25V521 for Mack.

Mack Trucks has announced a recall for specific models due to electrical system issues, according to notices from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Details of the Recall

The recall affects certain 2025 Mack Anthem and Granite trucks. The issue stems from power cables that may have been improperly routed, which could potentially lead to an electrical short.

According to the recall notice, Mack Trucks, Inc. will re-route the power cables at no cost to the owners. Notification letters were sent to affected owners on June 16, 2025. For more information, owners can contact Mack’s customer service at 1-800-866-1177, referencing recall number SC0480.

Additionally, Mack is recalling specific 2024-2026 Mack MD models. The issue with these vehicles involves the Controller Area Network (CAN) system. If CAN communications are interrupted, the throttle signal from the electro mobility control unit may retain the last known throttle setting, preventing the engine from returning to idle as required. This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 124, “Accelerator Control Systems.”

To address this, Mack dealers will update the control unit software free of charge. Notification letters for this recall are scheduled to be mailed on August 19, 2025.

For further assistance, affected owners are encouraged to contact Mack’s customer service at the number provided above.
