Thousands of heavy-duty trucks roll off assembly lines across North America every week, but most are built at a relatively small number of manufacturing facilities. These plants supply trucks for fleets, dealerships, municipalities, and owner-operators throughout the United States and Canada, with each location playing a distinct role in commercial truck production.

Although manufacturers operate additional facilities for engines, components, and specialty vehicles, the following plants are among the largest and most important final assembly locations for Class 8 trucks in North America.

Cleveland, North Carolina

Freightliner’s Cleveland Truck Manufacturing Plant has become one of the busiest heavy-duty truck assembly facilities in North America. Operated by Daimler Truck North America, the plant is best known for building the Freightliner Cascadia, a model that has led the North American Class 8 market for years.

The facility has expanded multiple times since opening, reflecting continued demand for Freightliner highway tractors. In addition to final assembly, Cleveland serves as a key production center within Daimler’s broader North American manufacturing network.

Dublin, Virginia

Volvo Trucks builds nearly all of its North American highway models at the New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia.

The plant opened in 1975 and has grown into Volvo’s largest truck manufacturing facility worldwide. Today it assembles the VNL, VNR, VNX, and VHD while incorporating advanced robotics, automated material handling systems, and modern quality control processes throughout production.

Denton, Texas

Peterbilt’s Denton manufacturing plant has been the company’s primary assembly location since the early 1980s.

The facility produces both highway and vocational trucks, including the Model 579, one of Peterbilt’s best-known long-haul tractors. Denton also houses engineering, testing, and administrative operations, making it one of the company’s most important campuses.

Chillicothe, Ohio

Kenworth’s Chillicothe Assembly Plant remains one of PACCAR’s largest truck manufacturing facilities.

The plant assembles a range of on-highway and vocational models while using robotic welding systems, automated paint operations, and extensive inspection procedures. Continuous upgrades over the years have helped the facility keep pace with changing production demands and manufacturing technology.

Macungie, Pennsylvania

Mack Trucks has built commercial vehicles in Pennsylvania for generations, and its Lehigh Valley Operations facility in Macungie continues that tradition today.

The plant assembles the Anthem, Granite, Pinnacle, LR, MD, and TerraPro model lines for customers across North America. While Mack’s products have evolved considerably, the company’s long manufacturing history remains closely tied to Pennsylvania.

More Than an Assembly Line

A finished truck represents the work of far more than a single factory.

Before reaching final assembly, engines, transmissions, axles, wiring harnesses, braking systems, electronics, interiors, and other major components are produced at facilities throughout North America. Final assembly plants bring those components together before each truck undergoes inspection, testing, and quality verification.

Although the names on the hood differ, every manufacturer follows the same basic goal: producing trucks that can withstand hundreds of thousands of miles in demanding commercial service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are so many truck manufacturing plants located in the southern United States?

Many manufacturers expanded into the South because of available land, transportation access, established supplier networks, and a skilled manufacturing workforce. Proximity to major interstate highways and distribution routes also supports efficient delivery throughout North America.

Are heavy-duty trucks built only in the United States?

No. Heavy-duty truck manufacturing takes place in both the United States and Mexico. Modern production relies on facilities in both countries, with components moving across borders before final assembly.

Do manufacturers build every part of a semi truck themselves?

No. Most heavy-duty trucks contain components supplied by hundreds of specialized manufacturers. Assembly plants receive those parts before completing final assembly and inspection.

Which truck plant has been operating the longest?

Several facilities have decades of manufacturing history. Volvo’s New River Valley Plant opened in 1975, while Mack has maintained truck manufacturing operations in Pennsylvania for well over a century through various facilities.

How many trucks can a modern assembly plant build?

Production varies by manufacturer, staffing levels, demand, and model mix. Large heavy-duty truck plants are capable of producing hundreds of trucks during a typical production week.

A “Do Not Drive” recall has been issued for nearly 800 Mack and Volvo trucks because of a wheel-mounting issue that could allow wheel lug nuts to loosen and a wheel to detach.

The recall affects approximately 644 Mack trucks and 155 Volvo trucks.

According to recall information, the affected vehicles may have an issue related to wheel and hub mating surfaces. Because of the potential for wheel separation, affected trucks should not be driven until they have been inspected and repaired.

The recall includes the following models:

2026 Mack Anthem

2026-2027 Mack Pinnacle

2026-2027 Mack Pioneer

2026-2027 Mack Granite

2027 Mack Anthem

2026 Volvo VAH

2026-2027 Volvo VNL

2026-2027 Volvo VN

2026-2027 Volvo VHD

2027 Volvo VNR

To address the issue, dealers will inspect the wheel and hub mating surfaces, remove any masking material, and replace worn components if necessary. Repairs will be performed at no cost to owners.

Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed beginning June 5.

Kenworth has reintroduced its TourAmerica paint scheme as a limited edition option for select 2026 truck models, available on sleeper configurations of the T680, W900L, W990, and T880. The updated design keeps the original 1990s look but adapts it for modern equipment and is part of the Freedom 250 initiative tied to the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.

For fleets and owner-operators, this release provides a way to run a recognizable heritage design on current production trucks without changing performance, specifications, or applications.

What is the Kenworth TourAmerica paint scheme?

The TourAmerica paint scheme is a Kenworth truck design first introduced on the T600 in the 1990s, known for its patriotic styling. The 2026 version retains that recognizable look while updating materials and finishes to match current production standards.

For experienced drivers, it brings back a familiar design. For newer operators, it offers a distinct alternative to standard factory paint options.

The key takeaway is that this is a visual update only and does not affect truck capability or performance.

Which trucks offer the TourAmerica paint scheme in 2026?

The updated TourAmerica paint scheme is available on sleeper configurations of the following Kenworth models:

T680

W900L

W990

T880

These models are used across long-haul, vocational, and specialized operations.

Limiting the option to sleeper configurations focuses the design on high-visibility equipment typically used for longer routes.

The key takeaway is that operators can adopt this design without changing equipment specs or job function.

Why did Kenworth bring the TourAmerica design back?

Kenworth reintroduced the TourAmerica paint scheme as part of its Freedom 250 initiative, which highlights trucking’s role in supporting the United States ahead of its 250th anniversary in 2026.

This connects a recognizable design from the 1990s with a current national milestone.

The key takeaway is that the release is focused on industry recognition and historical visibility rather than product changes.

What is the Freedom 250 initiative?

The Freedom 250 initiative is a nationwide campaign connected to the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. It highlights American history while recognizing industries, including trucking, that support the movement of goods and communities.

As part of the initiative, Kenworth donated a T680 with a 76-inch sleeper to support related programs.

The key takeaway is that this campaign connects trucking to national outreach and historical recognition.

What are Freedom Trucks?

Freedom Trucks are trucks used as part of the Freedom 250 program to haul mobile museum exhibits across the country throughout 2026.

These mobile museums are traveling exhibits designed to deliver interactive educational experiences to communities nationwide.

The key takeaway is that these trucks support outreach and education while still reflecting the core role of trucking in moving loads across distances.

How will the TourAmerica trucks be used in 2026?

At least one truck tied to the initiative will operate within the Freedom Trucks program, hauling mobile museums across the country.

While this differs from standard freight operations, the function remains consistent with trucking’s role in moving goods between locations.

The key takeaway is that the trucks demonstrate a nontraditional but relevant application of commercial vehicles.

What does this mean for fleets and owner operators?

For fleets and owner operators, the return of the TourAmerica paint scheme is a visual and branding option rather than an operational change.

No impact on performance or specifications

Available on current production sleeper models

Limited edition factory option

This allows operators to differentiate equipment visually without affecting maintenance, compliance, or workload.

The key takeaway is that this is a low-risk way to stand out without operational tradeoffs.

How does the updated design balance tradition and modern trucking?

The updated TourAmerica paint scheme combines a legacy design with modern truck platforms currently in production.

It preserves the original visual identity while aligning with current materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes.

This makes it relevant to both experienced drivers familiar with the original and newer operators entering the industry.

The key takeaway is that the design bridges the past and present without compromising current equipment standards.

As the industry continues to deal with a shortage of qualified drivers, one manufacturer is putting more focus on the people behind the wheel. Western Star Trucks is building on that effort in 2026 by expanding its Star Nation Experience, adding new competitions, and increasing dealer involvement to highlight operator skill and raise awareness of trucking as a career path.

The move reflects a broader push to recognize what it actually takes to handle heavy equipment, move materials, and operate safely in demanding conditions.

A Stronger Focus on the Work Behind the Wheel

Western Star is putting a spotlight on the connection between equipment and the people running it. The company continues to emphasize that performance on the road or jobsite comes down to both.

“The people and the equipment working together are what make this industry work,” said Alex Martin-Banzer, Western Star brand manager.

That message carries through the entire program, which is built to showcase real-world ability rather than just display equipment.

Star Nation Experience Returns in 2026

The Star Nation Experience will return for its fourth year from June 5 through June 8, 2026, in Bend, Oregon. The event brings together operators, dealers, and others connected to trucking for hands-on challenges and team-based competition.

New for 2026 is a head-to-head operator showdown designed to put skills front and center. Participants will take part in off-road challenges and activities that reflect the type of work many operators handle in the field.

The program will also continue its connection with American Truck Simulator, using the platform to reach a wider audience and introduce more people to trucking.

Who Can Take Part

Participation is open to operators with an active Class A CDL, along with members of the American Truck Simulator community across the United States and Canada who are over the age of 21.

Winners receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the event.

Two returning participants will step into leadership roles as team captains. Ronald Byrd, based in Texas with experience in the oil industry, and Jarett Dorman from British Columbia with a background in crane operations, will help lead the teams during the competition.

Expanding the Role of Dealers

The 2026 event will also bring dealers further into the experience. Two dealers will be selected to attend and bring a customer with them, highlighting how equipment decisions and ongoing support play out beyond the initial purchase.

That addition is intended to strengthen relationships across different parts of the business while showing how each role connects to day-to-day operations.

Building Interest in Trucking Careers

Beyond competition, the larger goal is to bring more attention to trucking as a long-term career option. By showing the level of skill involved and the range of work operators handle, Western Star is aiming to give a clearer picture of what the job actually looks like.

The Star Nation Experience is designed to connect experienced operators with newer entrants and create more visibility around opportunities in the field.

A Broader Industry Effort

Programs like this reflect a growing effort to highlight the people doing the work, not just the equipment being used. Bringing operators, dealers, and newer audiences into the same space helps reinforce the role each plays in keeping freight and materials moving.

With added competition, expanded participation, and a continued focus on real-world skills, the 2026 Star Nation Experience is set to build on that approach while keeping attention on the individuals who make the industry run.

Truck owners running Mack Trucks equipment still have a narrow window to get ahead in this year’s calendar contest, with the early entry deadline set for March 31.

The annual Mack Trucks Calendar Contest has returned for its 2027 edition, bringing new categories into the mix while continuing to highlight working trucks across real-world applications. The program focuses on trucks currently in revenue service, not showpieces or retired units, putting the spotlight on equipment that earns its keep every day.

“The Mack Calendar Contest is really about the pride our customers have in their trucks and the work they do with them,” said David Galbraith, Mack Trucks vice president, global brand and marketing. “Every year, we see incredible entries that capture the toughness, reliability, and character of Mack trucks in action. With the addition of new categories this year, we’re looking forward to seeing even more stories from the people who rely on Mack to get the job done.”

What’s New in the 2027 Contest

This year’s contest introduces additional themed categories aimed at reflecting how Mack trucks are used across different job types and operating conditions.

New categories include:

Built for Toughest Jobs

Built for Versatility

Built for the Long Haul

Alternative Fuels

These are being added alongside returning categories such as Old Bulldogs Hard at Work, as well as model-specific entries for trucks like the Mack MD, Mack LR, and Mack TerraPro.

Important Dates to Know

Drivers and fleet operators planning to enter should pay close attention to the timeline:

Early entry period ends March 31

Public voting runs from April 1 through April 30

Submissions remain open during the voting period

Winners will be announced by May 30

Each participant can receive one vote per day in each category through the contest website.

What Winners Receive

Selected trucks will be featured in the official 2027 Mack calendar. Each winning entry will also receive a professional photo shoot arranged by Mack Trucks.

In addition to the calendar, selected entries may be showcased across Mack’s social media platforms, which reach more than 1,000,000 followers.

Who Should Enter

The contest is open to trucks actively working in fleets, meaning vehicles that are still hauling, operating, and generating revenue. This keeps the focus on real working conditions, whether that is long-haul freight, vocational jobs, or specialized applications.

Where to Find More Information

Full contest rules and submission details are available through Mack Trucks’ website here. Questions about entries can be directed to socialmedia@macktrucks.com.

The finished 2027 calendar is expected to be released later this year through Mack’s online store.

For many professional drivers, Peterbilt has long stood for endurance, comfort, and pride behind the wheel. This week, the company reached a milestone that speaks directly to that legacy: the delivery of its 100000th Model 567, handed over to WM Waste Management at Peterbilt’s Denton, Texas, manufacturing plant.

“Reaching the 100000th Model 567 milestone is a major achievement, and we’re proud to recognize WM as the recipient of this special truck,” said Jake Montero, Peterbilt general manager and PACCAR vice president. “WMs’ trust in Peterbilt highlights our ability to deliver tailored solutions that meet the unique business needs of our customers.”

For those in trucking, the Model 567 has become a familiar sight, especially in heavy-duty and refuse operations where durability, uptime, and operator comfort are everything. WM has relied on Peterbilt trucks for years to keep its fleet moving, trusting in their performance and reliability day after day.

According to Peterbilt, “The Model 567 is a versatile vehicle designed for robust heavy and severe duty configurations. It offers maximum durability, fuel efficiency, and uptime for all applications, including refuse.”

That kind of versatility is why so many fleets and drivers value this model. Whether it’s hauling waste through tight city routes or tackling rough construction terrain, the 567 has built its name on consistency and strength.

Todd Poste, vice president of supply chain and chief procurement officer at WM, underscored the relationship between the companies. “We’re honored to accept the 100000th Peterbilt Model 567. Our partnership with Peterbilt and Rush Refuse Systems has been instrumental in helping us deliver on our mission of environmental responsibility and operational excellence. We look forward to continuing this relationship as we drive toward a more sustainable future.”

Rush Refuse Systems, which has worked closely with both WM and Peterbilt, also marked the event as a milestone for the industry. “Delivering the 100000th Peterbilt Model 567 is a tremendous milestone, and we are honored to share it with WM, one of our most valued and long-term customers,” said Rusty Rush, chairman, CEO, and president of Rush Enterprises. “As the market share leaders in the Refuse industry, Peterbilt and Rush Enterprises are proud of our partnership that drives innovation and provides total solutions for customers like WM who lead the way in the industry.”

For truck drivers, these milestones are more than corporate announcements; they represent the craftsmanship and reliability that keep fleets on the road and drivers on schedule. Every mile logged in a Model 567 stands as proof of how a truck built for performance and comfort supports the people doing the real work.

As Peterbilt’s Montero added, “The 100000th Model 567 delivery reflects manufacturing excellence and a legacy of class and outstanding performance Peterbilt is known for.”

The company recently reached another milestone by producing its first Model 567 in Canada for Environmental 360 Solutions, further evidence that this model continues to expand its reach in industries that rely on toughness and precision every single day.

HOLT Truck Centers is stepping up to support the next generation of diesel technicians. The company has donated five heavy-duty trucks to three schools in Oklahoma, aiming to provide students with hands-on experience using the equipment they’ll encounter in the workforce.

Two of these trucks were delivered to the Francis Tuttle Technology Center, marking the first of several presentations across the state.

A Commitment to Skilled Trades

“We are proud to support programs that are shaping the future of our skilled trades workforce,” said Robert Fulgium, senior vice president of HOLT Truck Centers. “At HOLT Truck Centers, we recognize the critical importance of providing students with access to industry-standard equipment, ensuring they graduate job-ready and confident in their abilities. Training on the latest tools and technologies will give students a competitive edge as they transition into the workforce.”

The donation reflects HOLT Truck Centers’ focus on education and workforce development, as well as their broader support of the skilled trades.

Where the Trucks Are Going

Francis Tuttle Technology Center and Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology each received two trucks, while Tulsa Tech received one. Each truck weighs more than 50,000 pounds and comes equipped with advanced systems to help students turn classroom lessons into practical skills.

Meeting the Need for More Technicians

The donation arrives at a critical moment for the industry. Baby boomers are retiring, and the demand for skilled diesel technicians is growing. The TechForce Foundation’s 2024 Technician Supply and Demand Report predicts the U.S. will need more than 249,000 new technicians by 2028.

HOLT Truck Centers’ contribution aims to help schools train more students, strengthening the pipeline of qualified professionals and ensuring service reliability across the country.

Hands-On Learning with Modern Technology

The trucks will be integrated into multiple training programs, giving students real-world experience with diesel technology, including hybrid and electric systems. By combining hands-on training with classroom instruction, students gain the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing industry.

Through this donation, HOLT Truck Centers is helping students prepare for careers and supporting communities by addressing the growing gap in skilled trades.

Volvo Trucks is once again raising the bar on driver safety by announcing that every new truck built for the North American market will now include integrated side curtain airbags as standard equipment.

This move adds another layer of protection for drivers and passengers, particularly in rollover crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rollovers account for nearly half of all truck occupant fatalities, making them one of the deadliest types of accidents on the road.

Building on a Legacy of Safety

Volvo’s reputation for safety leadership isn’t new. In 1996, the company introduced the driver-front airbag in its VN model and immediately made it standard across the lineup. Today, with side curtain airbags designed to deploy in the event of a rollover, Volvo continues that legacy by offering technology that helps minimize injuries in the most severe crash situations.

Magnus Koeck, Vice President of Strategy, Branding, and Marketing at Volvo Trucks, emphasized that safety is at the heart of everything the company does.

“We have always been the safety leader, and we will always be the safety leader,” Koeck said. “We will never compromise on safety. We’re putting active safety and passive safety at the top of our list.”

Leading the Industry Once Again

With this announcement, Volvo becomes the first heavy-truck manufacturer to make side curtain airbags a standard feature across all its models. The company has a long track record of pioneering safety advancements in heavy-duty trucks, from introducing high-strength steel cabs to implementing electronic stability control. More recently, Volvo was also the first to equip trucks with an automatic emergency call system that directly connects to 911 after airbag deployment.

What It Means for Drivers

For professional drivers, these standard safety upgrades translate into more confidence behind the wheel. Rollovers can happen in an instant, often with devastating consequences. By making side curtain airbags standard, Volvo is reducing risks in a way that could save countless lives and injuries on the road.

The decision reflects the brand’s ongoing commitment to driver protection and reinforces why Volvo remains a leader in heavy-duty truck safety.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is set to begin a comprehensive study examining the causes behind commercial vehicle crashes. The initiative, funded at $30 million by Congress in 2021, aims to improve safety standards for drivers, carriers, and the public.

According to FMCSA, the study will officially start early next year, with full details to be published in the Federal Register on Thursday, August 28. Its stated goal is “to monitor crash trends and identify causes and contributing factors and develop effective safety improvement policies and programs.”

The agency plans to collect detailed data from 3,333 fatal crashes across 30 state jurisdictions. “This effort is aimed at identifying key driver, vehicle, motor carrier, and environmental factors that may contribute to fatal crashes involving heavy-duty trucks,” FMCSA explained.

Data collection is expected to take a minimum of two years to complete. During this time, the public will have opportunities to submit comments to help shape the findings and recommendations.

This study represents one of the most extensive federal efforts in recent years to better understand the dynamics of commercial truck crashes and to develop actionable solutions that enhance safety for everyone on the road.

Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies has officially rolled out its 500,000th Endurant transmission, a landmark moment for the company’s automated manual transmission series. The achievement highlights how quickly this line has gained traction in fleets across North America since its debut in 2017.

The milestone transmission didn’t just head out the door quietly. It was delivered straight to Werner Enterprises, one of the earliest adopters of the Endurant and a longtime partner of Eaton Cummins. Werner has relied on the Endurant for years as part of its ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and reliability for its drivers.

The celebration took place at the Kenworth Truck Plant in Chillicothe, Ohio. At the event, a Kenworth T680 fitted with the 500,000th transmission came off the production line, where Eaton Cummins presented Werner with a commemorative plaque.

“We are proud to celebrate this milestone with Werner, a partner since the beginning of the Endurant journey,” said Josh Mejeur, regional director at Eaton Cummins. “This reflects both the strength of our partnerships and the value customers find in the Endurant platform.”

Scott Reed, senior vice president of maintenance at Werner, emphasized the company’s long relationship with Eaton: “Werner has worked with Eaton for more than 40 years, and we were proud to receive the first Endurant transmission. This milestone reflects our shared commitment to innovation and reliability for our drivers and customers.”

The Endurant family has grown significantly since its launch, now including models like the Endurant HD, Endurant HD V, Endurant HD N, Endurant XD, Endurant XD Pro, and Endurant XD N. These variants are designed to serve both highway applications and demanding vocational work.

Key features of the Endurant transmissions include a lightweight build, advanced software that improves shifting performance, and driver-friendly operation aimed at reducing fatigue and maximizing uptime.

For fleets, hitting the half-million production mark is a sign of both the product’s staying power and the industry’s ongoing shift toward technology that balances durability with driver comfort.

This report is based on information released by Eaton Cummins and Werner Enterprises.
