Truck drivers running through Pennsylvania are starting to see more legal places to shut down. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has confirmed it has opened 339 new truck parking spaces statewide, marking early progress toward its broader commitment to add at least 1,200 truck parking spots by the end of 2026.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the new spaces are already available at 24 locations across the Commonwealth. These sites include Interstate on ramps, weigh stations, and other state-owned properties that can be used quickly without waiting for long-term construction projects. For drivers dealing with packed rest areas and limited hours of service flexibility, the additions offer immediate relief in high traffic corridors.

Why These New Spaces Matter to Drivers

Finding safe and legal parking has become one of the most consistent challenges for professional drivers. Congested freight lanes, tight delivery windows, and hours of service limits often leave drivers searching late in the day with few options. PennDOT says the newly opened locations were selected to address those pressure points while allowing drivers to meet federal rest requirements without risking violations or unsafe parking.

“As a commercial driver’s license holder, I know how critical safe parking options are for the people who keep goods moving to and through Pennsylvania,” said Mike Carroll. “The Shapiro Administration is wasting no time in making good on this commitment to give them more options to meet their federal rest requirements. This is a commonsense approach to enhance safety, and the department is looking at ways to add even more spaces.”

Locations Where New Truck Parking Is Now Available

Before the end of 2025, PennDOT completed truck parking additions at the following locations:

Interstate 99 on ramps in Bellwood, Blair County

I-79 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Butler County

Route 100 northbound weigh station in Chester County

Four I-79 on ramps in Erie County

I-81 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Franklin County

Location off I 70 in Fulton County

I-380 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Lackawanna County

Location off Route 315 in Luzerne County

Route 9404 William Penn Highway Park and Ride in Northampton County

Location off Route 6 in Pike County

I-81 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Schuylkill County

Two locations off U.S. 11 in Snyder County

I 79 southbound weigh station in Washington County

I-83 northbound and southbound weigh stations in York County

These locations were chosen because they could be activated quickly and are already positioned along heavily traveled freight routes.

How Drivers Can Find These Parking Spots

To make the new spaces easier to locate, PennDOT added a Public Truck Parking feature to the 511PA system. Drivers can view available parking on www.511PA.com or through the 511PA mobile app. The map shows both existing truck parking and newly designated locations, with updates added as more sites open.

What Comes Next for Pennsylvania Truck Parking

The 339 spaces are only part of PennDOT’s long-term plan. The agency has stated it is continuing to evaluate additional state-owned sites and weigh stations where more parking can be added quickly. These early openings are intended to reduce immediate pressure while larger expansion projects move forward.

For drivers moving freight through Pennsylvania, the added parking means fewer last-minute decisions, less stress at the end of the day, and more opportunities to stay compliant while staying safe.

Truck drivers running Interstate 17 through central Arizona are getting more legal rest options as the Arizona Department of Transportation opens a newly built truck parking lot at the Sunset Point Rest Area. The expansion is part of a broader statewide effort to address chronic parking shortages on major freight corridors.

Sunset Point sits between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction, a stretch of highway where drivers routinely report full rest areas and limited safe places to stop. The new lot directly targets that pressure point.

What Was Added at Sunset Point

The new parking area adds 19 additional truck spaces to a rest area where capacity has consistently been strained.

“The new lot on Interstate 17 between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction features 19 spaces at a rest area where demand is high for truck parking, as the existing 27 spaces for commercial vehicles are often at or near capacity,” ADOT said. “The $4.1 million project also added waterless vaulted toilets and covered ramadas.”

For drivers, this means more room to park legally and access basic amenities without risking violations or unsafe roadside stops.

Why ADOT Used a Different Construction Approach

To stretch funding and accelerate delivery, ADOT used a lower-cost surface design instead of traditional pavement.

“The lot was constructed with gravel supported with a grid, which costs about half as much as asphalt pavement,” ADOT said. “The surface is permeable, which maximizes the space available for parking because no water retention areas are needed.”

This approach allowed the state to add parking faster while still supporting heavy truck use, a key factor as Arizona works to close its truck parking gap.

More Truck Parking Coming Across Arizona

Sunset Point is only one piece of a larger plan. ADOT is building hundreds of new truck parking spaces at rest areas where demand is highest along Arizona’s interstate system.

The following projects are scheduled to come online next:

I-40 Parks Rest Area, west of Flagstaff
Reopening in spring 2026 for truck parking only, adding 21 new spaces to the 18 already in place.

I-17 Christensen Rest Area, south of Flagstaff
Reopening in spring 2026 for truck parking only, restoring 21 spaces.

I-10 Burnt Wells Rest Area, west of Phoenix
Adding 125 truck parking spaces in late 2026.

I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Area, west of Winslow
Adding 133 spaces in winter 2027.

These projects follow the opening of 57 new truck parking spaces at the Haviland Rest Area on I-40 west of Kingman in December.

How the Parking Locations Were Chosen

The current buildout is based on Arizona’s 2023 Statewide Truck Parking Implementation Plan, developed through public feedback and direct coordination with the trucking industry.

The plan prioritizes rest areas along Interstates 10, 17, 40, and 8 where overnight demand is highest and alternative parking options are limited. Most of the new capacity is being added at existing facilities, along with two proposed truck-only lots.

Study documents and maps outlining recommended truck parking locations are available through ADOT’s implementation plan materials here.

Why This Matters for Drivers

For drivers moving freight through Arizona, additional parking at known choke points like Sunset Point means fewer end-of-day scrambles, lower risk of hours-of-service violations, and safer rest opportunities. While the total shortage has not disappeared, each added space reduces pressure across the system.

As more of these projects open over the next two years, drivers should see incremental improvements along some of the state’s busiest freight corridors.

Pennsylvania is taking major steps to tackle one of the most persistent challenges truck drivers face on the road: finding safe, convenient parking. The state recently announced it will add over 1,200 truck parking spaces at 133 locations statewide by the end of 2026. On top of that, the Pennsylvania Turnpike is exploring an additional 600 spaces across its system.

This marks the first statewide expansion of designated truck parking outside of new facility construction projects, providing drivers more options to safely rest and comply with hours-of-service regulations.

PennDOT plans to place new truck parking spots in key areas, including:

Interstate on-ramps where safety and sightlines are clear

Weigh stations used by the Pennsylvania State Police for motor carrier safety enforcement

Various locations within the highway right-of-way

“Truck parking is a nationwide issue,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “As a commercial driver’s license-holder myself, I know how important this commonsense approach is to our economy and workforce. By adding these spots – and looking at ways to add even more – we’re giving truckers many more options to safely park and meet their rest requirements.”

Michael Hampton, senior policy advisor at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, also highlighted the safety benefits from a federal perspective.

The new spaces will be clearly marked with signage installed by PennDOT.

“This initiative directly supports our mission to ensure motor carrier safety by reducing driver fatigue and improving the overall safety of our highways,” PSP Director Bureau of Patrol Major Robert Krol said. “Safe, designated parking is essential for commercial drivers, and this effort represents a significant step forward in protecting everyone who travels on Pennsylvania’s roads.”

The Pennsylvania Turnpike has invested over $30 million into expanding truck parking. As it moves toward open-road tolling, officials are reviewing interchange layouts to potentially add more parking spaces.

“The trucking community is essential to our mission of supporting national commerce,” Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO Mark Compton said. “We are dedicated to finding innovative solutions that address the increasing truck parking shortages along our system, and we take pride in collaborating with partners throughout the Commonwealth to enhance driver safety and improve logistics efficiency.”

Drivers can now find public truck parking locations through Pennsylvania’s 511 website, either on the map homepage or listed under the “traffic” menu. New spaces will be updated as they become available.

“Truck drivers are essential to keeping our economy moving, goods on our shelves and food in our pantries – but they need safe places to stop and rest,” Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association President and CEO Rebecca Oyler said. “With only one parking space for every 11 drivers on the road, too many truckers are forced to choose between breaking hours-of-service laws or stopping in unsafe locations. Every new space added to our highway network means one more trucker has a safe and secure place to stop.”

A 2023 study commissioned by the Pennsylvania State Transportation Advisory Committee found that truck parking demand is far outpacing supply.

“The supply of truck parking has failed to keep pace with the escalating demand, leading to a widespread shortage of truck parking across Pennsylvania,” Rep. Doyle Heffley, R-Cabon, wrote in a bill memo.

PennDOT’s new expansion follows the study’s recommendation to repurpose select state-owned surplus properties. A truck parking task force is also working with regional, municipal, and industry partners to develop additional local solutions.

Truck drivers know parking is a scarce resource, but simply knowing where spots might be available isn’t enough anymore. With new technology, data integration, and planning methods evolving fast, experienced drivers can take advantage of truck parking data systems in more strategic ways to save time, reduce stress, and stay compliant with Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.

This article goes beyond the basics, exploring how drivers can combine available tools with strategic planning for better parking outcomes.

Integrating Truck Parking Data with Route Planning Tools

Many modern routing apps now offer built-in truck parking information sourced from national databases and crowdsourced reports. Using these apps proactively during trip planning lets drivers:

Identify parking options aligned with delivery schedules, reducing idle time spent hunting for spots.

Optimize routes around available rest areas or truck stops, especially on tight delivery windows.

Set parking alerts for upcoming stops to avoid last-minute decisions when hours are running low.

Apps like Trucker Path and DAT Load Board have integrated parking availability alongside load and route planning features, helping drivers plan multiple trip elements simultaneously.

Leveraging Telematics and Connected Vehicle Data

Some fleets use telematics systems that provide real-time data not only on vehicle performance but also on nearby truck parking availability. Drivers linked to such fleets can:

Receive proactive parking suggestions based on current location, remaining drive time, and parking occupancy rates.

Avoid congested rest stops, as telematics analyzes usage trends to recommend less crowded locations.

Communicate directly with dispatch using integrated systems to coordinate stops and breaks efficiently.

According to a recent FHWA report on connected vehicle technology, this integration is expanding rapidly, with pilot programs showing improved driver compliance and reduced unsafe parking behaviors.

Using Weather and Traffic Data Together With Parking Info

Parking availability can change quickly due to weather or traffic delays. Experienced drivers combine truck parking data with:

Weather apps provide alerts for storms or heavy snow, allowing early rerouting to parking with adequate shelter or safety features.

Real-time traffic updates to anticipate delays that impact driving hours and parking timing.

Platforms like MyRadar Weather Radar and Google Maps can be used alongside parking apps to create a comprehensive situational picture.

Planning Personal Breaks Around Parking Patterns

Studies show that parking spots fill and empty at predictable times, often linked to driver habits and delivery schedules. Drivers who monitor these trends:

Plan breaks during off-peak parking hours, reducing wait time and improving rest quality.

Use parking occupancy heat maps available in some apps to spot less crowded times and places.

Research published by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) (2024) highlights that strategic timing of breaks based on parking data correlates with better HOS compliance and driver wellness.

The Growing Role of Crowdsourced Data and Community Reporting

While sensor-based data is still limited in scope, crowdsourced information from other drivers fills gaps effectively:

Apps that allow drivers to report parking availability or closures in real time help keep data fresh.

Participating in these communities not only benefits the network but also gives drivers an early heads-up on unexpected lot conditions.

Regularly updating parking apps or joining driver forums ensures access to the latest crowd-verified parking status.

For drivers looking to go beyond basic parking searches, combining truck parking data systems with routing apps, telematics, weather and traffic info, and community reporting creates a powerful toolkit. This layered approach helps maximize driving time, reduce uncertainty, and maintain compliance in a profession where every minute counts.

Keeping up with the latest tech integrations and developing habits around data-driven planning makes a measurable difference on the road.

The trucking industry drives commerce forward, with drivers spending countless hours transporting goods across the nation. Staying safe on the road, however, requires discipline, preparation, and awareness—particularly in a profession filled with unpredictable situations. Whether you’re a veteran driver or just starting your career, following these tips will help you maintain safety and confidence behind the wheel.

Smart Safety Practices Every Truck Driver Should Follow

Defensive Driving: Stay Proactive and Focused

Defensive driving is crucial for minimizing risks. Maintain safe distances from other vehicles, frequently check your mirrors, and anticipate the unpredictable actions of surrounding drivers. Staying focused and avoiding distractions—like mobile devices—can prevent critical accidents long before they happen.

Regular Vehicle Inspections Are Non-Negotiable

Before hitting the highway, conduct a systematic pre-trip inspection. Test your brakes, assess tire conditions, ensure your lights are functional, and confirm fluid levels are sufficient. Well-maintained vehicles not only perform better but also significantly reduce the risk of dangerous breakdowns.

Combat Fatigue by Prioritizing Rest

Driver fatigue is among the top causes of road accidents in the trucking industry. Stick to Hours of Service (HOS) regulations and recognize your personal limits. Take frequent breaks, use rest stops, and ensure you’re getting enough sleep. A rested driver is a safer driver.

Emergency Readiness Starts With Preparation

From mechanical failures to severe weather conditions, emergencies are part of life on the road. Equip your truck with an emergency kit that includes first aid essentials, non-perishable snacks, plenty of water, a flashlight, and any additional tools you might need. Being prepared not only protects you but also alleviates stress in critical situations.

Situational Awareness Keeps You Secure at Stops

Your safety doesn’t end when the engine turns off. Always stay aware of your surroundings, particularly in areas that may feel less secure. Park in well-lit locations, keep your doors locked, and exercise caution when interacting with strangers. Situational awareness can protect you both on and off the road.

Empowering Drivers Beyond the Basics

Evelyn Guajardo’s Mission for Self-Defense

Driver safety isn’t limited to road conditions—it also involves personal security. Evelyn Guajardo, Recruiting Manager at NFI, saw a deeper need to empower drivers through self-defense.

After listening to concerns from NFI’s female drivers about unsafe locations, Evelyn took action. Through “She Drives” events, she introduced self-defense demonstrations tailored to the everyday challenges drivers may face. These lessons provide practical skills and peace of mind, ensuring drivers feel equipped to protect themselves in any situation.

Evelyn’s work highlights the importance of looking at safety from multiple angles—not just mechanical but personal as well.
Navigating the open road comes with its fair share of hazards, but adopting intentional safety habits can make all the difference. Whether you’re running through a pre-trip checklist, practicing defensive driving, or taking Evelyn’s advice and investing in self-defense training, every precaution contributes to your overall safety.

Take a moment to evaluate your current safety practices. By incorporating these strategies into your day-to-day routine, you can tackle the open road with confidence, security, and peace of mind. Remember, every safe choice gets you closer to your destination—and back home—safely.
