The Salvation Army has been bolstered in its ongoing relief efforts for hurricanes Helene and Milton, thanks to a generous $5,000 donation from the Nebraska Trucking Cares Fund.

Nebraska Trucking Steps Up for Hurricane Relief

Collaboration was at the heart of this initiative, as members of the Nebraska Trucking Association (NTA) joined forces with the Salvation Army to help communities impacted by the severe hurricanes in the Southeast.

“We looked into trying to collect donatable goods,” said Kent Grisham NTA president and CEO. “But after some research, it was clear that various service organizations in the southeast had well-established methods of collecting and distributing materials in areas hard-hit by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. So, we decided to partner with one of the most trusted and reliable service organizations in the world, the Salvation Army, to conduct a fundraising campaign.”

Women’s Council and Nebraska Trucking Cares Unite for Action

The fundraising campaign, which was spearheaded by the NTA’s Women’s Council, marked a departure from the Nebraska Trucking Cares Fund’s usual mission. Typically, the fund provides aid to employees of NTA members facing hardship, but the immediate and overwhelming needs of hurricane victims prompted the group to extend their reach.

“Nebraska is no stranger to the devastation caused by natural disasters,” Grisham explained. “This year alone, our state has endured destructive tornadoes, hailstorms, floods, and wildfires. That shared experience created a deep well of compassion and generosity among our members, inspiring them to help those suffering in the Southeast.”

A Ceremonial Gesture of Solidarity

The collaboration culminated in a ceremonial check presentation between NTA and Salvation Army leaders. The $5,000 contribution will support disaster relief operations that remain active in communities affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

“We are truly grateful for this outstanding support from the Nebraska Trucking Association via the Nebraska Trucking Cares Fund,” said Maj. Scott Shelbourn, commander of The Salvation Army Western Division. “The $5,000 donated by NTA members will make a big difference for Salvation Army disaster-relief operations that are still ongoing in the Southeast in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. It takes a team effort to help disaster-impacted communities recover, and we salute the NTA for being part of that team.”

George Maxwell’s Heroic Act Amidst Hurricane Turmoil

In a remarkable display of bravery, George Maxwell, a truck driver from Tampa, Florida, has been recognized with the TCA Highway Angel award for his courageous actions during Hurricane Milton. Working for TransAm Trucking, Inc. based in Olathe, Kansas, Maxwell risked his own safety to rescue a couple stranded during the devastating storm.

According to the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), on October 10 at approximately 3 a.m. in Plant City, Florida, Maxwell faced extreme weather conditions. As the hurricane approached, he headed to the truck parking lot where his semi-truck was parked. Braving the worsening weather, he drove his personal pickup truck to relocate his semi-truck to a safer, elevated location. However, his plan took an unforeseen turn.

“I’m in the truck,” Maxwell recounted. “I’m watching the water come up higher and it’s getting bad.”<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-537017 alignright" src="https://truckdriversus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/maxwell.jpg" alt="In a remarkable display of bravery, George Maxwell, a truck driver from Tampa, Florida, has been recognized with the TCA Highway Angel award for his courageous actions during Hurricane Milton.
With floodwaters rising swiftly, Maxwell abandoned his efforts to save his pickup truck and concentrated on securing his semi-truck. At that moment, he noticed a dire situation—the owners of the truck parking lot were trapped in their house, which was encircled by chest-deep floodwaters.

“They said they thought they were safe there but it’s not safe,” Maxwell noted, as relentless rain poured and winds gusted at nearly 100 miles per hour.

Navigating the perilous waters, Maxwell reached the couple’s home and guided them to his semi-truck. He offered them shelter and drove them to higher ground, ultimately saving them from life-threatening danger. Unfortunately, Maxwell’s personal vehicle was lost to the flood.

“It’s totally gone,” Maxwell reflected about his ruined pickup truck. Despite the loss, he affirmed his decision, stating, “I would do it again. I just did what I’d hope anyone would do for me.”

Since its inception in August 1997, the TCA Highway Angel program has recognized nearly 1,400 professional truck drivers for their exceptional kindness, courtesy, and courage while on duty. The program is supported by sponsors such as EpicVue, DriverFacts, and Northland Insurance, allowing TCA to honor extraordinary drivers like Maxwell.

Following the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, communities in Georgia are rallying together to support those affected. The Atlanta-based nonprofit, Caring for Others, has joined forces with Convoy of Care and WSB, a local ABC affiliate, to launch a relief effort aimed at providing much-needed supplies and financial support to hurricane victims.

The initiative, dubbed the “All Hands Mission,” is a testament to the community’s commitment to assist those in need. With preparations underway since September 26, the team will deliver crucial aid to the hardest-hit areas, including Augusta and Valdosta.

Founder and CEO of Caring for Others, Eslene Richmond-Shockley, has been a beacon of hope for communities impacted by disasters worldwide. Over the past 20 years, she has tirelessly worked to provide relief and support to those in dire situations.

On October 3, Convoy of Care’s first truckload of essential supplies will arrive in Valdosta. Residents can access these resources as they begin to rebuild their lives. This effort is bolstered by partnerships with organizations like the Georgia Motor Trucking Association, law enforcement bodies such as National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), and numerous local businesses, all of which are mobilizing volunteers to ensure effective distribution.

To contribute to this vital cause, donations of cleaning tools and supplies, including tarps, work gloves, shovels, rakes, and flashlights, are welcomed at the Caring for Others HQ located at 3537 Browns Mill Rd SE #2, Atlanta, GA 30354. Financial contributions can also be made directly through their website at caring4others.org/hurricane-helene/.

“Caring For Others stands ready to activate our ‘All Hands Mission’ whenever disaster strikes. Our hearts go out to those suffering, and we are dedicated to easing their burden,” Richmond-Shockley stated.

Clarence Cox, former President of NOBLE, added, “For over a decade, the Convoy of Care has been a pillar of support for communities in crisis.”
