If you rely on Interstate 40 to travel between North Carolina and Tennessee, there’s some good news. After a sudden closure on June 18 caused by flooding and rockslides, the affected stretch of I-40 is now open to traffic again, sooner than many expected. The work crews wasted no time bringing this important route back, shaving nearly a week off the anticipated timeline.

Fast Turnaround on Repairs and Debris Removal

The highway closure impacted four separate spots near the state border, where a mix of floodwater and rocks blocked the road. Workers also fixed the on-and-off ramps at Exit 451, so access is fully restored at that junction. While early estimates suggested the repairs might take up to two weeks, the response turned out to be much quicker. According to an update from the Tennessee Department of Transportation on Facebook, all essential clean-up and fixes were finished in about a week.

Sharing the progress on social media, TDOT said, “We are thankful for the hard work that went into reopening this vital roadway. Crews will continue working on I-40, and we remind people to slow down in work zones, for their safety and the safety of the crews.”

What’s Changed for Drivers?

I-40 is flowing again, but don’t expect things to be quite back to normal; only one lane is open each way right now, and everyone has to slow down to 35 mph in the construction zone. If you’re driving an oversized vehicle, you’ll have to find another route, since restrictions on wide loads remain from last fall when Hurricane Helene battered the area. Those limits won’t lift until all repairs are complete.

Still Considering Alternate Routes?

Although the interstate is open, the North Carolina Department of Transportation advises that drivers—especially those passing through—should think about alternate highways to avoid traffic tie-ups. NCDOT recommends Interstates 77, 81, 74, and U.S. Highway 74 for those making long trips across the border.

Despite progress on I-40, traveling through western North Carolina remains tricky. As of June 30, 44 roads are completely closed, and another 51 offer limited access. Truckers face added hurdles, with seven routes still shut off for large commercial vehicles.

Road Closures Linger After Hurricane Helene

Tennessee’s recovery efforts aren’t done yet. TDOT reports that some state roads are still blocked from lingering storm damage. Drivers can check the department’s website for current detour maps and a list of state routes under repair.

Ongoing Maintenance and Safe Driving

While lanes are open and commuters are getting a break, road crews will stick around for a while to finish patching up the area. TDOT continues to stress caution: “Crews will continue working on I-40, and we remind people to slow down in work zones, for their safety and the safety of the crews.”

The reopening of I-40 is a major relief for both daily travelers and trucking companies, but patience remains important as full restoration takes time. Keep an eye on the TDOT and NCDOT websites for travel news, closures, and updates before you hit the road.

For the first time since Hurricane Helene devastated the region last September, Interstate 40 has reopened in western North Carolina. Traffic is now allowed with one lane open in each direction.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), along with its contractors, has worked tirelessly to stabilize the highway and reopen a portion of it. Efforts focused on fortifying the remaining westbound lanes, making it possible to facilitate travel for residents and businesses once again.

Source: NCDOT

Official Statement from NCDOT

Wanda Payne, NCDOT Division 14 Engineer, explained, “We are happy to have this open for the people who depend on a connected transportation system between North Carolina and Tennessee. This opening improves the flow of people, goods and services between our two states and between locations far beyond Haywood County.”

Key Details on the Reopened Stretch

The reopened stretch spans approximately 12 miles, connecting Cold Springs Creek Road (Exit 7) in North Carolina with Big Creek Road (Exit 447) in Tennessee. Restoration efforts in Tennessee have also contributed to making this section passable. However, these are not typical interstate conditions—be prepared for some changes:

Lanes are narrower, and shoulder areas are smaller than usual.

A 35-mph speed limit is enforced across this segment.

A 9-inch by 9-inch concrete barrier divides opposing lanes of traffic.

Emergency access points allow EMS vehicles to reach the area if needed.

An emergency-only lane has been designated on the eastbound side.

Standard 18-wheelers can travel the corridor, but wide loads are prohibited.

Travel Tips and Advisories

Traveling through the Pigeon River Gorge corridor will come with challenges due to these temporary changes. Officials warn drivers to expect delays during peak traffic times, especially Friday through Sunday afternoons and holiday weekends.

Alternate Route Recommendations:

For those looking to bypass potential congestion, NCDOT suggests taking I-26 from Asheville to Kingsport, Tennessee, and then continuing on I-81 South back to I-40.

Tractor-Trailer Advisory:

Standard tractor-trailers are allowed to pass through the reopened section, but drivers are cautioned that many GPS apps might incorrectly suggest alternate routes within the gorge. These options are not available for tractor-trailers beyond Exit 20 (U.S. 276). Wide loads must detour via I-77 and I-81 to connect between North Carolina and Tennessee.

Moving Forward

Drivers traveling between North Carolina and Tennessee or passing through the affected corridor are encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly. While this reopening is a critical step forward, patience and caution will remain essential as repairs continue.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced the completion of extensive repairs on the Whitson Avenue Bridge in Swannanoa, North Carolina. The bridge connects U.S. Highway 70 and Old U.S. Highway 70 near Asheville, which reopened to traffic on Wednesday, February 26.

After several months of dedicated repair efforts, the barricades will be removed, restoring a critical connection between two key transportation routes. Tim Anderson, an NCDOT Division 13 engineer, expressed his gratitude to the local community: “We are proud to serve the Swannanoa community. We are also humbled by the outpouring of appreciation for the work we have completed to reconnect the community.”

To celebrate this milestone, the Swannanoa Grassroots Alliance put on a bridge reopening ceremony the same day.

Repairs from Hurricane Helene Damage

The Whitson Avenue Bridge was significantly damaged when flooding from Hurricane Helene washed out the approaches leading to the structure. The NCDOT crews carried out several essential repairs, including:

Rebuilding the approaches with new fill materials.

Constructing a retaining wall behind the southern abutment.

Replacing the concrete slab leading up to the bridge.

Laying fresh asphalt and installing a new curb and gutter system.

Installing new asphalt and upgraded traffic signals on Old U.S. Highway 70.

This successful bridge restoration is part of NCDOT’s larger effort to address widespread hurricane damage. The department has repaired or replaced 213 bridges and restored nearly 800 culverts affected by the storm. Of the roads once closed due to Hurricane Helene, approximately 89% have now reopened.

I-40 to Reopen Soon with Restrictions

Further west, Interstate 40 in western North Carolina is on track to reopen by March 1. “I am proud of NCDOT’s focus on this challenge and the roadworkers who have worked tirelessly to reopen roads and keep people safe,” said North Carolina Governor Josh Stein in a recent statement.

Sections of I-40—between Exits 20 and 15 and from Exit 7 to the Tennessee state line—will soon be available for standard-size trucks, though oversize load restrictions will remain in place. The permanent reconstruction of I-40 is scheduled to begin soon, with Ames Construction named the primary contractor for the project.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein announced on Monday that two lanes of Interstate 40, which have remained closed since Hurricane Helene caused severe damage last fall, will reopen by March 1.

The announcement coincided with a visit from U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to the impacted area. During a press conference, Duffy shared that the DOT and the U.S. Forest Service are collaborating to expedite the reconstruction process. This partnership includes acquiring a “Special Use” permit that will allow access to rock and other construction materials from Forest Service land and a nearby river.

This approach significantly shortens the supply chain, enabling the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to source construction materials from just 1 to 3 miles away rather than hauling them from distances ranging between 20 and 50 miles.

Reconstruction Efforts Underway

NCDOT shared key updates about the work that will occur over the next few weeks. Teams will focus on stabilizing the westbound lanes, installing speed limit signs restricting travel to 40 mph, adding a 9-inch curb to divide the two lanes, and completing safety inspections of the area.

One lane in each direction will be reopened between Exits 20 and 15, as well as from Exit 7 to the state border and five miles into Tennessee. These reopened stretches, however, will accommodate standard trucks only—oversized loads will remain restricted.

Bolstering the Economy and Reconnecting Routes

Governor Stein also applauded the efforts of NCDOT and its workers. “I’m proud of NCDOT’s focus on this challenge and the roadworkers who have worked tirelessly to reopen roads and keep people safe,” Stein said. “Reopening these lanes will help reconnect North Carolina and Tennessee and allow us to welcome back visitors to bolster the economy.”
