After an eight-year break, the iconic reality series Ice Road Truckers is rolling back onto TV. The History Channel confirmed the return, announcing that Season 12 will premiere on October 1 at 9:30 p.m. Eastern (8:30 p.m. Central).

The show, which first aired in 2007, became a fan favorite for its raw portrayal of truckers navigating some of the most dangerous roads in the world. Viewers followed drivers hauling essential freight across frozen lakes and remote ice-covered routes, where one wrong move could mean disaster.

Familiar Faces Back Behind the Wheel

Season 12 will bring back two familiar drivers. Lisa Kelly and Todd Dewey, both longtime cast members, are the only veterans from the last season to return. They will be joined by a group of rookies eager to prove themselves on the brutal northern roads of Alaska and Canada.

Kelly first appeared on the series during Seasons 3–5 before returning in Season 7 in 2013. Dewey also came on board in Season 7, and both stayed until the show was placed on hiatus following Season 11 in 2017.

Oddly, the program was never formally canceled. Instead, it was paused indefinitely, leaving fans unsure whether they would ever see their favorite truckers again.

The History Channel on What’s Ahead

“From its original series premiere in 2007 to a several-year-long hiatus, the fearless truckers return like never before to the treacherous terrain of icy roads and frozen lakes in Northern Canada delivering crucial supplies and necessities to isolated communities,” said a statement from the History Channel. “With a winter window shorter than ever and no time to waste, these drivers risk everything to haul in a lifeline of goods while chasing big paydays before the opportunity melts away under their chained tires.”

This season will test both seasoned drivers and newcomers as they face shrinking delivery windows and extreme weather conditions that only heighten the risks.

Remembering Darrell Ward

One of the most memorable figures in Ice Road Truckers’ history was Darrell Ward, who joined the cast in Season 6. Ward tragically passed away in a plane crash in August 2016 in Montana. His son, Reno, also appeared on the show, carrying forward his father’s trucking legacy.

A History Channel Legacy

The series was created and narrated by Thom Beers, who also served as executive producer of another major History Channel hit, Deadliest Catch.

With the return of Ice Road Truckers, longtime fans will once again get a front-row seat to the icy challenges and high stakes that defined the series from the start.

Ever watch Ice Road Truckers and think, “I could do that!”? It’s a bold claim, but the reality of ice road trucking is a lot more complex than just driving across frozen lakes. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to haul freight on ice roads, let’s break it down — and trust me, it’s not for the faint of heart.

What is Ice Road Trucking, Anyway?

Simply put, ice road trucking means driving over frozen bodies of water or temporary roads made of ice, often to reach places that are completely isolated during the winter. The infamous Dalton Highway in Alaska, stretching 414 miles from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, is one of the most well-known ice roads. It’s where trucks roll through extreme weather and ice conditions, delivering vital goods like fuel, supplies, and machinery to oil fields and remote towns.

What Do You Need to Get Into Ice Road Trucking?

It takes a lot more than just a CDL. Sure, you need the license, but real ice road truckers have a specific skill set and experience that most drivers don’t have. Here’s what you’re looking at:

Experience Behind the Wheel: First off, you’ll need years of truck driving experience, especially on highways and in snow. Ice-road driving is in a whole different league, so experience is key.

Winter Driving Skills: You need to know how to handle slick roads, sudden snowstorms, and frigid temps. You’re already ahead of the game if you’ve driven through blizzards.

Know How to Fix Things: Cold weather can wreck equipment fast. So, knowing how to make basic repairs on your rig could be a lifesaver when you’re stuck miles from help.

Mental and Physical Toughness: Long hours, freezing temps, and isolation? That’s a typical day. You’ve got to be able to handle the stress and isolation that come with the job. It’s not a walk in the park.

What’s the Equipment Like?

The truck is your lifeline when you’re driving on these roads, and it’s got to be ready for the challenge. Here’s a quick rundown:

Specialized Gear for the Cold: Trucks need engine block heaters to keep them running in temperatures that can dip below 40°F. Plus, fuel additives are a must to prevent diesel from freezing.

Ice-Proof Tires: Ice road tires are built to grip icy surfaces, so you’re not sliding off the road at the slightest wrong move.

Emergency Gear: You need to be self-sufficient when you’re out on the ice. That means carrying emergency supplies like food, water, and first aid kits in case you break down or get stranded.

The Risks You Can’t Ignore

Look, this job isn’t just about driving; it’s about surviving. You’ve got to know the risks:

Thin Ice: Sometimes, the ice just isn’t thick enough. There’s always a chance that the ice could crack beneath you, and that’s a risk you have to take seriously.

Weather: It can go from clear skies to blinding snow in seconds. Whiteouts, icy winds, and storms can hit out of nowhere, and you need to stay calm and focused.

Mechanical Failures: Cold weather can freeze up systems, crack parts, and cause serious issues. You’ve got to be ready for the unexpected.

What’s the Pay Like?

So, the risks are big, but the rewards are pretty attractive. Ice road truckers aren’t paid like your average driver. This is challenging work, and companies know it. You can earn anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000 for a few months of work, depending on your experience. Some drivers push past $150,000 if they’re veterans of the ice road game. The season is short — typically just a few months — so drivers can make a solid chunk of change quickly.

Is Ice Road Trucking for You?

If you’re the kind of person who loves a challenge and thrives in difficult conditions, ice road trucking could be your calling. But it’s not for everyone. The long hours, freezing temperatures, and risk factors all make it a hard choice, but if you’re looking for a job that combines skill, adventure, and big rewards, it’s a unique path.

These stories of dedication, innovation, and resilience inspire and captivate enthusiasts and professionals alike. In this blog, we will explore some of the most legendary truckers and their famous rigs, delving into their contributions and the legacy they have left on the road.

“Bandit” Darrell Ward and His Kenworth W900

Darrell Ward, a beloved figure from the reality TV show “Ice Road Truckers,” was known for his fearless driving and larger-than-life personality. Ward’s Kenworth W900, a classic and reliable rig, became synonymous with his name. He was renowned for his ability to navigate the treacherous ice roads of Alaska and Canada, transporting essential supplies to remote areas. Tragically, Ward passed away in a plane crash in 2016, but his legacy as a daring and skilled trucker lives on.

“Rubber Duck” and the 1977 Mack RS700L

The 1978 film “Convoy,” directed by Sam Peckinpah, featured the iconic character “Rubber Duck,” played by Kris Kristofferson. The movie was inspired by the 1975 country song “Convoy” by C.W. McCall. Rubber Duck’s truck, a 1977 Mack RS700L, became a symbol of rebellion and camaraderie among truckers. The film and the truck inspired a generation of drivers, embodying the spirit of freedom and adventure on the open road.

Jesse James and the Outlaw Garage Custom Trucks

Custom motorcycle builder and TV personality Jesse James turned his attention to trucks with his show “Outlaw Garage.” James is known for his intricate and highly customized trucks, blending art with engineering. One of his notable creations is the “54 Chevy COE,” a heavily modified truck that showcases his unique style and craftsmanship. James’s work continues to inspire truckers and custom builders around the world.

Lisa Kelly, another star from “Ice Road Truckers,” is celebrated for her determination and skill in navigating some of the world’s most dangerous roads. Kelly’s Kenworth W900 is equipped to handle extreme conditions, making it a trusted partner in her challenging journeys. Kelly has become a role model for aspiring truckers, especially women, demonstrating that perseverance and expertise can conquer any road.

“Mad” Max Rockatansky and the Mack R-600

In the dystopian world of the “Mad Max” film series, the Mack R-600 truck, driven by the titular character played by Mel Gibson, has become an icon of rugged resilience. The truck, heavily modified for the film, represents survival and resourcefulness in a post-apocalyptic landscape. While fictional, the impact of the Mack R-600 on popular culture and its association with strength and endurance resonates with many in the trucking community.

The stories of these legendary truckers and their famous rigs highlight the passion, ingenuity, and resilience that define the trucking industry.
