With the summer heat bearing down, the Illinois Tollway is stepping up to protect drivers from the risks of extreme temperatures. They’ve launched around-the-clock Hot Weather Patrols—a dedicated effort to spot and help anyone stuck along the Tollway system during dangerously hot conditions.

A Safety Net on the Road

“The Illinois Tollway typically mobilizes special Hot Weather Patrols to provide additional roadside assistance whenever temperatures or heat indexes indicate conditions could be hazardous for drivers stopped along the road,” the Tollway said in a recent press release.

These patrols are designed to actively search for stranded vehicles and respond to calls for help made to *999, the Illinois Tollway dispatch, or the Illinois State Police.

Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse emphasized how critical this service is right now:
“During this dangerously hot weather, we are adding these additional road patrols to better protect our customers by ensuring we can more rapidly find and aid drivers who are stranded along our roads or need assistance. Safety is always our highest priority.”

If you find yourself in trouble, you’re encouraged to call *999 and share your location, including the highway name, direction of travel, and the nearest mile marker or crossroad. It’s also important to stay with your vehicle, switch on your emergency lights, and wait for help to arrive.

More Patrols, More Coverage

Normally, the Tollway’s Highway Emergency Lane Patrol (H.E.L.P.) runs on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. But with the heatwave, extra patrols are hitting the roads—at least 12 specially equipped trucks are now on duty 24/7. These vehicles come with traffic arrow boards and can transport passengers to a safe, air-conditioned spot like a Tollway maintenance garage or oasis while arrangements are made for vehicle assistance.

The Hot Weather Patrols can help with common problems like:

Running out of gas

Flat tires

Dead batteries

Overheated engines

How to Stay Safe in the Heat

Along with deploying patrols, the Tollway is also urging drivers to prep for summer travel with these tips:

Check your tire pressure – Under-inflated tires are more likely to blow out in hot weather.

Top off fluids – Engine coolant and other fluids help prevent overheating.

Keep an emergency kit – Pack water, snacks, jumper cables, a flashlight, road flares, tools, and a first aid kit.

Stay off your phone – Using handheld devices while driving is against Illinois law.

Move over for stopped vehicles – It’s not just courtesy; it’s the law when you see hazard lights.

With temperatures rising, the Illinois Tollway is making it clear that driver safety comes first. These extra patrols are more than just trucks on the road—they’re a lifeline for anyone who might get stuck in the heat. Just remember: help is always within reach at *999.

The Illinois Tollway has announced that extensive lane closures and traffic reconfigurations will commence this week on the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88). These adjustments, set to last through the summer, are necessary to facilitate repair work on the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR).

Electronic message boards and construction signage will be placed along the affected areas well in advance to ensure drivers are informed. The Illinois Tollway invites drivers to consult its Daily Construction Alert for real-time updates on closures and changes.

According to the Tollway, these repair schedules are contingent on weather conditions.

Traffic Reconfigurations and Closures

Starting the week of April 28, traffic between Illinois Route 23 and the DeKalb Oasis will be redirected to the eastbound lanes, with flows restricted to a single lane heading in either direction. This traffic pattern will stay in place until work on the westbound side is completed.

Once repairs on the westbound lanes are finalized, the configuration will reverse. All vehicles will shift to the westbound lanes, with traffic still limited to a single lane per direction. This setup is expected to persist through late fall as work progresses on the eastbound side of the bridge.

The lane reductions and shifts are designed to ensure safe traffic flow while providing adequate space for comprehensive bridge repairs. The planned updates will encompass the following:

Deck and parapet renovations

Abutment rehabilitation

Approach slab improvements

Joint repairs

Pavement and shoulder restorations

Coordination with Local Partners

The Illinois Tollway highlighted its ongoing collaboration with Union Pacific Railroad, as well as local fire and police departments, to mitigate disruption and ensure safety during construction.

Broader 2025 Improvements Across I-88

The bridge repairs are part of a larger set of upgrades planned for I-88 in 2025. These include corridor-wide pavement improvements near the Union Pacific Railroad in DeKalb and the completion of the York Road Bridge reconstruction in Oak Brook. The York Road project involves enhancing ramps that connect eastbound I-88 to southbound I-294 and northbound I-294 to westbound I-88.

All these upgrades are a segment of the Move Illinois program, the Illinois Tollway’s ambitious 15-year, $14 billion capital initiative to modernize infrastructure and improve the driving experience statewide.

For more updates and travel adjustments, check the Illinois Tollway alerts. Planning your route ahead will ensure a safer and stress-free commute during this essential construction period.

Students from five high schools in the Chicago area are engaging in a unique, interactive program this week, organized by the Illinois Tollway. These aspiring professionals are given an up-close experience at Tollway maintenance facilities to cultivate their interest in careers within transportation, engineering, and construction.

This initiative offers students direct exposure to career paths in transportation while simultaneously fostering a new generation of skilled workers for the Illinois Tollway and the broader transportation industry.

“We are committed to inspiring the next generation of leaders to learn how their interests today can translate into successful careers in the transportation industry,” said Cassaundra Rouse, Executive Director of the Illinois Tollway. “By connecting students with our teams, we are providing a firsthand look at how the work we do every day keeps people and goods moving safely and efficiently while contributing to the regional economy.”

A Peek Behind the Scenes

On April 25, students visited the Bensenville Maintenance Site to explore state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, such as plows and roadway technology. They also toured the Alsip Maintenance Site on the same day, receiving insight into how Tollway crews work round the clock to maintain roads, assist travelers, and handle emergencies.

Alongside these tours, the Illinois Tollway teams educated the students on safety protocols, advanced technology, and systems such as overhead roadway gantries and digital messaging platforms that enhance traffic flow and provide real-time information to drivers.

The initiative also emphasized the significance of the transportation system as a backbone for connecting communities and driving economic growth.

Connecting Teens with Industry Pros

One of the program’s highlights is the opportunity for students to engage directly with transportation professionals, including engineers, construction workers, and tradespeople. These conversations are designed to inspire students to envision themselves in careers across civil engineering, construction trades, and other transportation-related fields.

The students also had the chance to visit dynamic work sites to observe large-scale construction efforts. Some students toured the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) work site near Hinsdale, part of a $4 billion project to revamp a 23-mile segment of the Central Tri-State Tollway. This project focuses on easing congestion, modernizing infrastructure, and fulfilling regional transportation demands.

Others observed progress on the new I-490 Tollway near Bensenville, which will offer the first western access to O’Hare International Airport. The I-490 Tollway will connect the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) with the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) and Illinois Route 390, enhancing regional connectivity.

Building the Future of Transportation

By creating these immersive experiences, the Illinois Tollway is equipping students with both inspiration and information about career opportunities in transportation. The program highlights the essential work of keeping roads safe and efficient and ensures students see the critical role transportation plays in fostering economic connections and opportunities.

With hands-on opportunities like these, the Illinois Tollway is paving the way for the next generation of transportation leaders to thrive in fields that shape the future of communities and infrastructure.

When winter’s biting cold hits Illinois, ensuring safety on the road becomes paramount. To tackle this, the Illinois Tollway has launched a dedicated effort to assist drivers during frigid conditions, employing continuous patrols for rapid roadside help.

Assistance When You Need It Most

The Illinois Tollway is encouraging drivers to stay prepared for severe cold weather travel and to call *999 if assistance is needed on the Tollway system. Help is available for those facing mechanical issues or being stranded. Regularly deployed Zero Weather Road Patrols are now active around the clock, improving the response time for those needing help.

“Safety is always our highest priority and during this frigid weather we want to remind drivers they can always reach us by dialing *999 if they need roadside assistance on our system,” not only during freezing winter weather but throughout the year,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse.

By calling *999, drivers can connect with Zero Weather Road Patrols, Tollway Highway Emergency Lane Patrol (H.E.L.P.) trucks, or Tollway roadway maintenance teams who are ready to provide aid.

Winter Driving Tips from the Illinois Tollway

The Tollway has issued advice for drivers navigating brutal winter conditions to stay safe on the road. Follow these essential tips when driving during subzero temperatures:

Use *999 for Assistance: Provide your location details, like the nearest mile marker or crossroad, for faster help.

Stay in Your Vehicle: If stranded, turn on your emergency lights and remain inside your car until responders arrive.

Charge Your Phone Fully: Ensure your cell phone has enough battery life before leaving your destination.

Mind Your Tires: Cold weather deflates tires—check inflation levels regularly.

Keep a Full Tank: Avoid gas line freeze-ups by maintaining your tank at least halfway full.

Pack a Safety Kit: Include gloves, blankets, boots, flares, bottled water, and a flashlight with fresh batteries in your car.

For real-time updates on road conditions, drivers can subscribe to Tollway Trip Tweets at Twitter or find updates on the Tollway’s website at illinoistollway.com. Track specific roadways like @94_294_Tollway and @I_88_Tollway for personalized alerts.

Around-The-Clock Zero Weather Road Patrols

During freezing conditions, the Illinois Tollway deploys 24-hour Zero Weather Road Patrols to supplement regular roadside services provided by the H.E.L.P. trucks.

Available Monday through Friday from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. under Geico sponsorship, H.E.L.P. trucks are complemented by at least 12 Zero Weather Road Patrols outside these hours, including nights and weekends.

These patrol vehicles, equipped with arrow boards for traffic management, can transport stranded drivers to Tollway maintenance garages, plazas, or oases while helping address common issues like flat tires, drained car batteries, overworked radiators, and empty gas tanks.
