Paccar has announced a major recall involving over 56,000 trucks from the Kenworth and Peterbilt brands. This move comes after the identification of several lighting-related defects that could pose potential safety hazards. According to official documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall encompasses a wide range of models and years, though only a small percentage—approximately 0.3%—of the recalled vehicles are believed to be affected by these issues.

What’s Behind the Recall

The lighting issues involve several key components, including the tail brake lights, headlights, reverse lights, and turn signals. Additionally, the lift axles’ functionality may be compromised under certain conditions. For instance, the signal warning lights in affected trucks may cause the lift axles to either revert to a raised position when lowered or oscillate unpredictably. This instability adds to the risk of accidents and injuries when operating the affected vehicles.

A key concern is the insufficient illumination provided by the headlights, which may interfere with the driver’s ability to see the road clearly. Reduced visibility can significantly heighten the chances of an accident. Likewise, brake lights failing to provide adequate illumination could prevent other drivers from anticipating vehicle movements, creating further hazards on the road.

Affected Models

The recall impacts a comprehensive list of Kenworth and Peterbilt truck models manufactured over several years. Below is a breakdown of the models affected:

Kenworth Trucks:

L770 (2025-2026)

T180 (2025)

T280 (2025-2026)

T380 (2023-2026)

T480 (2024-2026)

T680 (2023-2026)

T880 (2023-2026)

W990 (2024-2026)

Peterbilt Trucks:

520 (2023-2026)

535 (2025)

536 (2024-2026)

537 (2024-2026)

548 (2023-2026)

567 (2023-2026)

579 (2023-2026)

589 (2024-2026)

Root Cause of the Problem

The recall stems from a misconfiguration in the vehicle control unit (VCU) software. This issue impacts the way the vehicle’s electronic control unit communicates critical messages, leading to the aforementioned lighting faults. The problem is subtle, as there are no obvious warning signs to alert drivers. However, some operators might notice changes in headlight behavior over time.

Paccar has acknowledged the problem and is taking steps to rectify it. The company plans to update the vehicle control unit software free of charge for all impacted vehicles. However, a timeline for sending recall notifications to vehicle owners has not yet been published by the manufacturer.

Reported Claims and Risks

Despite the recall’s extensive scope, Paccar has not reported any injuries or fatalities related to the defect so far. The company did confirm it had received 201 warranty claims and 25 additional reports involving the lighting issues by June 17. These reports suggest nearly 200 trucks in use may exhibit problems tied to the software misconfiguration.

Next Steps for Affected Truck Owners

Paccar has made it clear that correcting this issue is its top priority, and it has advised affected vehicle owners to contact their respective brands’ customer service channels for guidance. For inquiries related to the recall, customers can reach Kenworth at 425-828-5888 or Peterbilt at 940-591-4220. When calling, owners should reference recall number 25PACF to receive detailed assistance.

The NHTSA has also assigned a recall number, 25V436, which drivers can use if they wish to contact the administration directly for further information. Vehicle owners are encouraged to address this issue as soon as possible to ensure their safety and that of other road users.

Paccar has issued a recall for thousands of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks across various models due to a defect that may render their hazard lights inoperable.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that over 5,000 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks from model years 2023 through 2026 are affected. The issue stems from a potential failure in the exterior lighting switch. This defect not only impacts the functionality of hazard lights but also disables the instrument panel’s backlight brightness adjustment. Both malfunctions fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 101, “Control and Displays,” and FMVSS 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

Hazards of Malfunctioning Lights

If the hazard lights do not function, other drivers on the road may not be able to recognize a stalled or stationary truck, posing a serious safety risk. Additionally, an instrument display with an unadjustable brightness level could obscure vital safety information, potentially distracting the driver and increasing the chances of a collision.

List of Affected Models

The recall involves the following Kenworth and Peterbilt truck models:

2025 Kenworth T180

2025-26 Kenworth T280

2023-26 Kenworth T380

2024-26 Kenworth T480

2025 Peterbilt 535

2024-26 Peterbilt 536

2024-26 Peterbilt 537

2024-26 Peterbilt 548

2025 Peterbilt 567

Reported Issues and Recall Scope

As of January 20, Paccar had logged five warranty claims and 12 reports related to issues with the exterior lighting switch. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities linked to this defect. Paccar estimates that only about 1% of the affected trucks—out of the more than 5,000 identified—are equipped with a faulty exterior lighting switch.

Next Steps for Owners

To resolve the issue, Paccar dealers will update the vehicle cab controller unit (VECU) software on the affected vehicles, free of charge. Truck owners experiencing a nonresponsive lighting switch can reset the system temporarily by performing a key cycle.

Truck owners will be notified via mail starting March 30. For additional details, Kenworth owners can contact customer service at 425-828-5888 and reference recall number 25KWB, while Paccar owners can call 940-591-4220 with recall number 25PBB. The NHTSA has assigned this recall the identifier 25V-041.

Paccar has announced a recall affecting various Kenworth and Peterbilt truck models due to a problem identified in the accelerator pedal assembly.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents reveal that over 1,000 trucks from model years 2023 and 2024 are subject to the recall. The issue involves the throttle pedal assembly, which may have a magnet carrier that is oversized. This defect can reduce the pedal’s responsiveness or even cause it to stick, increasing the likelihood of an accident.

Affected Trucks in the Recall

The following trucks are included in the recall (all model year 2023-24 unless otherwise noted)

2024 Kenworth T180

Kenworth T280

Kenworth T380

Kenworth T480

Peterbilt 535

Peterbilt 536

Peterbilt 537

Peterbilt 548

Cause of the Recall

According to the official safety recall report, the oversized magnet carrier serves as the pivot point for the throttle pedal, potentially causing the pedal to bind. Paccar indicated that the issue originated from a problem with the molding tool used to create the magnet carriers.

If the throttle pedal becomes stuck and does not return to idle when released, braking can resolve the issue. However, introducing fluid into the affected components may exacerbate the problem.

This recall traces back to a larger equipment recall by Orscheln, the manufacturer of the problematic electronic throttle pedals. Orscheln’s recall impacts over 4,000 throttle pedals supplied to Paccar and other truck manufacturers, such as Oshkosh.

Current Status and Next Steps

By January 14, Paccar reported five warranty claims linked to the issue, though no field reports of incidents, injuries, or fatalities had been filed.

To resolve the issue, authorized Paccar dealers will inspect and replace throttle pedal assemblies as needed, free of charge. Truck owners affected by the recall will begin receiving official notification letters on March 17.

Need More Information?

For inquiries about the Kenworth recall, contact customer service at 425-828-5888, referencing recall number 25KWA.

For questions regarding Peterbilt trucks, reach out to 940-591-4220 and reference recall number 25PBA.

The NHTSA’s identifier for this recall is 25V-014.

If your vehicle is affected, ensure you take action promptly to resolve the issue and maintain safety on the road.

A significant safety issue has led to the recall of over 200,000 Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks due to a potential malfunction in their anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and electronic stability control features. This critical defect raises concerns about the functionality of certain models and their ability to maintain safe driving conditions.

The Issue at Hand

PACCAR Incorporated has initiated a recall impacting a range of Kenworth and Peterbilt models from the 2021 to 2025 production years. The affected trucks are equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced Electronic Control Units (ECUs). The recall is attributed to electrical noise and weak power line signals, which may cause the ECU to misinterpret commands or cease functioning entirely.

Next Steps for Truck Owners

PACCAR has assured owners that dealers will update the ECU software entirely free of charge to resolve this defect. If you’re an owner of an affected model, expect to receive notification letters beginning February 7, 2025.

A significant recall has been announced involving thousands of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks due to a problem with the Cummins X15 engines. This issue previously led to recalls affecting Daimler Truck and Navistar vehicles.

According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 6,000 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks from the model year 2025 are being recalled by Paccar. The affected models include:

Kenworth C500

Kenworth T680

Kenworth T800

Kenworth T880

Kenworth W900

Kenworth W990

Peterbilt 567

Peterbilt 579

Peterbilt 589

These trucks are equipped with Cummins X15 diesel engines featuring specific fuel pumps. It has been identified that some fuel pump barrels were manufactured with parts that have low fatigue strength, increasing their risk of fracturing. This fracture could lead to a fuel leak, potentially causing an engine stall, thereby elevating the chance of a crash.

Vehicles experiencing this engine defect might show reduced performance or trigger a warning light when fuel pressure dips below the required level. The presence of diesel fuel may also be detectable by sight or smell.

Paccar, in collaboration with the engine manufacturers, will replace the faulty Cummins X15 fuel pump barrels at no cost. Owners will receive notification letters by December 22.

This recall forms a segment of a comprehensive equipment recall issued by Cummins in September, affecting over 9,000 Cummins X15 engines supplied to different vehicle manufacturers such as Navistar, Daimler Truck, Kenworth, and Peterbilt. Of the total recalled units, only about 3% are anticipated to have this defect.

On October 1, both Daimler Truck North America and Navistar initiated their recalls related to the Cummins X15 issue, affecting nearly 1,700 trucks collectively. Together with Paccar’s recall, the majority of the engines initially recalled by Cummins are now accounted for. These engines were sold not only to heavy-duty commercial truck manufacturers but also to several fire truck manufacturers.

For inquiries regarding the Kenworth recall, customers can contact customer service at 425-828-5888, referencing recall number 24KWH. Peterbilt attendees can reach out to 940-591-4220 with recall number 24PBH or contact Cummins at 812-377-5000. The NHTSA recall number is 24V-789 for both recalls.
