The Women In Trucking Association has opened nominations for the 2026 Distinguished Woman in Logistics Award.

WIT announced the call for nominees as the award enters its second decade. The Distinguished Woman in Logistics Award recognizes women working in logistics roles across North America, including freight brokerage, third-party logistics, supply chain strategy, and operations.

Industry leadership recognition

Jennifer Hedrick, CAE, president and CEO of WIT, said the award reflects the role women play in the logistics sector.

“The Distinguished Woman in Logistics Award exemplifies the power of women’s leadership in a field critical to our economy,” Hedrick said. “We invite industry leaders, peers, and organizations to nominate women whose vision, determination and influence are shaping the next generation of logistics excellence.”

According to WIT, the award highlights leadership, innovation, and impact within the logistics profession.

“The award is an inspiring recognition that celebrates exceptional leadership, innovation and impact by women in the logistics profession across North America,” WIT said.

Focus beyond job titles

WIT said the award focuses not only on professional achievement, but also on broader contributions to the industry.

“The logistics industry is evolving, and the contributions of women leaders are central to that transformation,” WIT said. “The DWLA recognizes not only career accomplishments but also mentorship, advocacy, and community engagement. These attributes inspire others and foster a more inclusive, resilient industry. By elevating these role models, WIT encourages future generations of women to pursue dynamic careers in logistics and trucking.”

How to submit a nomination

Nominations are open now and must be submitted by February 27. There is no nomination fee. Individuals or organizations familiar with a nominee’s work may submit a nomination online.

Truck drivers know what it means to show up when people need you most, and one Texas company is getting national recognition for doing just that.

San Antonio-based supermarket chain H-E-B has been honored by the American Trucking Associations’ Trucking Cares Foundation with the 2025 John Lex Premier Achievement Award for its extraordinary disaster relief work and commitment to communities across Texas and Mexico.

This marks the first time the award has gone to a company rather than an individual, recognizing not only H-E-B’s leadership but also the thousands of employees who keep their fleet and operations moving when disaster hits.

“In the immediate aftermath of this summer’s catastrophic flooding in the Texas Hill Country, H-E-B sprang into action with such impressive speed and commitment to those in need, it earned itself the nickname ‘FEMA of Texas,’” said ATA President & CEO Chris Spear. “This humanitarian mission was the most recent example of H-E-B’s generosity in action, a defining characteristic for this company with deep roots in the community that date back to 1905. We applaud H-E-B and its employees for their selflessness, passion, and dedication to deliver hope where it is needed most.”

When flash floods hit Central Texas early on Independence Day, H-E-B’s disaster response team mobilized fast, much like truckers responding to an urgent load. The company deployed three disaster relief sites in the region, distributing water, ice, cleaning supplies, snacks, and gift cards, while also sending a Mobile Kitchen to provide hot meals staffed by H-E-B team members.

The Butt family, H-E-B, and the H.E. Butt Foundation also committed 5 million to help nonprofits working on recovery and community support.

“At H-E-B, providing aid in times of disaster is a cornerstone of our ‘Helping Here’ philosophy, which promises to stand by and uplift communities during times of need,” said H-E-B Senior Vice President of Transportation Logistics Todd Wright. “I’m so proud of how H-E-B partners from across the company rallied together to support the impacted areas in any and every way that they could. The road to recovery will be long, but H-E-B remains committed to providing support for as long as it’s needed. On behalf of our H-E-B family, I want to thank the ATA for recognizing the efforts of our amazing H-E-B partners and for their support to help us continue to put our spirit of giving to work into action.”

To top it off, the Trucking Cares Foundation made a 5,000-dollar donation in H-E-B’s name to the West Kerr Public School Foundation, supporting teachers and counselors helping communities heal after the floods.

For professional drivers, H-E-B’s work is a reminder of what trucking and logistics are really about, not just moving freight but delivering relief, reliability, and hope when people need it most.

This week in Pittsburgh, the 2025 Women In Motion (WIM) Symposium is bringing together some of the most influential leaders across transportation, logistics, and public policy. Organized by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association (PMTA), and hosted by founding sponsor FedEx, the two-day event runs July 8–9 at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott.

The focus? Leadership, innovation, and the evolving role of women shaping the trucking industry’s future in Pennsylvania and beyond.

Elevating the Voices Driving Change

The WIM Symposium serves as a space for collaboration, recognition, and forward momentum. According to Nikki Thomas, ATA’s Vice President of Industry Affairs:

“The Women In Motion Symposium is a critical opportunity to recognize the essential role women play in every part of the trucking industry. By bringing together thought leaders, industry professionals, and advocates this year in Pittsburgh, we’re advancing meaningful dialogue and driving progress for the trucking industry. The WIM Symposium is a chance for us to elevate and celebrate the women who are driving our industry forward every day.”

Panel discussions, networking sessions, and guest speakers will highlight how female leadership is helping move policy, infrastructure, and business strategies forward across the Commonwealth.

A Spotlight on Public Service and Innovation

Stacy Garrity, Pennsylvania State Treasurer and U.S. Army Reserve Colonel, will headline the event with a discussion on financial transparency and public service impact. A proven advocate for efficiency and empowerment, Garrity’s leadership has helped return billions in unclaimed property to state residents, expand the college savings landscape, and strengthen programs like PA ABLE for individuals with disabilities.

Her talk is expected to touch on how financial responsibility and innovation intersect with economic resilience in the state.

Another voice shaping the conversation is Pennsylvania State Senator Judy Ward, who will speak on policy efforts influencing business, transportation, and healthcare.

“This annual conference is a unique opportunity to celebrate the progress women have made in trucking, while also looking ahead to how we can lead the industry and our communities forward,” WIM said in a press release.

Ward’s firsthand policy insight, particularly around infrastructure and community-level economic development, adds a critical layer to the agenda.

Built by Women, Shaping the Future

With a diverse range of attendees—from veteran drivers and logistics executives to state officials and fleet managers—the WIM Symposium offers a real-world look at how women are not just participating in trucking, but leading it.

Nikki Thomas also acknowledged the support behind the event:

“Thank you to Rebecca Oyler, PMTA president, CEO, for her dedication to WIM and for helping to put together such a dynamic agenda for this year’s event.”

As the industry continues to evolve, events like the Women In Motion Symposium remind the trucking world of the progress being made—and the leaders making it possible.

The Women in Trucking Association (WIT) has honored Katie Petrie as its May 2025 Member of the Month. As the Head of Human Resources at American Expediting Logistics, Petrie is redefining leadership in an industry often unseen by the public but vital to our daily lives.

With nearly a decade in the transportation and logistics sector, Petrie exemplifies a career built on deliberate growth, bold decisions, and a deeply human-centered approach to leadership.

A Unique Path to Logistics

Petrie’s first step into her career was far removed from logistics. She began at Harley Davidson, working in the luxury recreational industry. However, a deeper connection to the world of transportation grew through a graduate school internship with XTRA Lease. That experience marked a turning point, leading her to a full-time role in Missouri, focusing on talent strategy for a company operating an impressive 90,000-trailer fleet across more than 50 locations.

Petrie rose from Talent Manager to HR Director during her seven years there. She honed her strategic skills, deepened her understanding of the supply chain, and prepared herself for even greater responsibilities. By the time she joined American Expediting Logistics, she was ready to make an impact. Starting as Senior Director, she has since grown into her role as Head of HR, shaping a workplace culture centered on compassion, transparency, and strategic foresight.

Passion for a Greater Purpose

For Petrie, the work isn’t just about logistics or operations; it’s about the sector’s indispensable role in everyday life. “The supply chain is the unseen force that powers our world,” she shares. “Knowing that my work has a direct impact on the economy and on people’s lives keeps me motivated.”

Her ability to turn purpose into action has yielded impressive results. Under her leadership, her teams have secured various recognitions, including the 2024 Women in Trucking “Top Company for Women to Work for in Transportation” award. Other achievements include awards for Total Rewards (2023) and Talent Development (2024) from Delaware Valley HR Excellence, reflecting Petrie’s dedication to innovative and employee-centric practices.

Resilience That Defines Success

Petrie’s career is a masterclass in resilience. Early on, she moved her family from Wisconsin to Missouri to pursue an opportunity in logistics. It was a daunting leap but one that shaped her future. “That decision required personal sacrifice,” she recalls. “But it proved to be one of the most rewarding risks I’ve ever taken.”

Mentorship, too, played a pivotal role along her path. Influential figures like Steve Bishara, Kim Berriman, and Dr. Joel Nadler helped refine her leadership style, encouraging her to think strategically and act purposefully.

A Vision for Leadership in HR

Petrie’s professional goals are as expansive as they are inspiring. Over the next year, she plans to deepen her strategic contributions at American Expediting Logistics. Looking further ahead, she envisions scaling her leadership to a larger organization while maintaining her commitment to fostering an inclusive, people-first work culture.

Her advice to women entering the logistics space is empowering and direct. “Don’t be afraid to aim high. This industry needs your ambition, perspective, and voice.” And for professionals seeking career wisdom, “Be a business partner first. Understand your area but never lose sight of the broader business goals.”

Life Beyond the Workplace

Outside of her professional life, Petrie wears many hats. A mom of four, she balances HR leadership with family life and personal interests. She stays active as a fitness enthusiast, finds joy in exploring new recipes, and fills her home with music spanning the ’70s to ’90s. Raised on a dairy farm, she cherishes family adventures and the simple magic of seeing life through her children’s eyes. “Seeing the world through my kids’ eyes is so magical,” she says.

When she’s not shaping workplace culture or spending time with family, you might find her binge-watching Navy SEALs.

HR as a Catalyst for Change

For Petrie, human resources is more than just a function within a company. It’s about driving meaningful change. “I’m passionate about building inclusive, people-focused workplaces that drive business results,” she explains. That mission has become her north star as she continues to reshape the logistics and transportation industry from within.

Petrie’s story is a remarkable example of intentional leadership, resilience, and purpose. With leaders like her, the trucking and logistics sector isn’t just moving goods; it’s creating change.

Ryder has secured a prestigious position on Fortune’s 2025 list of America’s Most Innovative Companies, a testament to the company’s focus on cutting-edge solutions and advancements.

Karen Jones, Ryder’s Chief Marketing Officer and head of new product development, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “To fully optimize supply chains and transportation networks, we continue to build on the $1.7 billion in strategic investments we have made since 2018 to develop, acquire, and invest in innovative customer-centric technologies, products, and services. This recognition from Fortune is a testament to our team’s dedication to shape the future of logistics.”

This honor follows another milestone for Ryder, which was also featured on Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies list for 2025 earlier this year.

The Role of Innovation and Collaboration

Its consistent collaboration with startups and tech leaders is at the core of Ryder’s forward-thinking approach. These partnerships aim to revolutionize areas such as e-commerce fulfillment, warehouse automation, robotics, digital logistics, artificial intelligence, and advanced vehicle technologies. Ryder’s strategy is designed to adapt to the shifting dynamics of modern supply chains while retaining its position as a logistics industry leader.

About the List

Fortune’s America’s Most Innovative Companies recognizes 300 U.S.-based businesses that showcase exceptional performance in three fundamental areas:

Allison Hughes’ career at the Bennett Family of Companies is a story of rapid adaptation and success. A graduate of the Truckload Carriers Association’s 2024 Elevate Young Leadership class, Hughes joined the company six years ago with no prior experience in trucking or logistics. Today, she plays a pivotal role as the contractor relations manager in the retention department, a position that allows her to make a tangible impact every day.

“We call our department the one-stop shop. We’re an owner-operator based company, and my department deals with anything and everything that we can do to keep our contractors leased onto us,” she said. “We are an agent-based company as well, and we really have to target specific agents and customers to keep our guys moving.”

Building Connections in a Changing Industry

One of Hughes’ strengths lies in building relationships and understanding the needs of Bennett’s fleet of owner-operators. She notes that the trucking industry is evolving, especially with younger generations of truckers.

“That’s probably the biggest thing; this new generation of truckers, a lot of them, want to be home more. They want to do more regional freight versus the typical model of over the road,” she said. “Even though we are predominantly an over-the road-company, we are trying to target more regional work.”

Data-Driven Leadership

Hughes’ role also extends beyond relationships. She’s deeply involved in the analytical side of operations, tracking key metrics that guide her department.

“I handle all the turnover numbers, revenue numbers, that kind of stuff,” she said. “It’s a very analytical position — just trying to figure out kind of where our shortcomings are and what we can do to improve to keep these guys leased on.”

A Nontraditional Path to Logistics Expertise

Hughes didn’t always envision herself in logistics. Originally from Indiana, she graduated from Ball State University with a degree in criminology. Uncertain about her next steps, she took a friend’s suggestion to join Bennett and embarked on a career path she never imagined.

Starting out in the safety department, she quickly adapted to the world of trucking. Her next role, as a claims adjuster within Bennett’s self-insurance program, offered her first in-depth look at the industry’s complexities.

“Bennett is so diverse! We’ve got about 12 different operating companies,” she said. “We’ve got crane and rigging, we’re in the oil fields, we’ve got heavy haul. We haul all sorts of different commodities.

“That was the biggest learning curve for me — just learning all of these different entities and how they function, and what they mean, and what they do, and how that all culminates,” she continued. “But I also think that’s why we are so unique; we have such a large footprint, and we do so much.”

Growing as a Leader

Hughes stepped into her current role as contractor relations manager three and a half years ago, just as major life changes were happening.

“I found out I was pregnant with my first child right when I took on this role,” she recalls. “It was a significant adjustment, and I was determined to give my all—to my job and to being a mom. Taking on leadership responsibilities while navigating these changes pushed me to grow.”

Learning to manage people and gain confidence in addressing upper management were some of the challenges Hughes faced early on.

“The most difficult part was finding my confidence, learning how to interact with upper management and senior level positions,” she said.

A Respect for the Industry

Through her experiences, Hughes developed a deep appreciation for the logistics industry and the truckers who make it all possible.

“Every day in logistics is different. New challenges, new environments — that’s what I enjoy most about my job,” she says. “And the truckers? What they do is absolutely remarkable. They don’t just drive; they have to know so much—about their trucks, the law, the rules of the road, and their loads. The general public really has no idea how demanding it is.”

Despite starting her career with no logistics background, Hughes has not only thrived but become a key figure at Bennett Family of Companies. Her openness to learn, adapt, and lead has propelled her success in a constantly evolving industry.

“I never thought I would be in the logistics industry,” she said. “Growing up, I always heard the typical stigma of logistics and truckers and the trucking industry as a whole. I had no idea what all that encompasses and what all goes into it.

From her beginnings in the safety department to her leadership role today, Allison Hughes’ story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and the kind of determination that drives success in the logistics industry.
