On July 29, 2025, Governor Mike DeWine and ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn shared details of a significant initiative to expand truck parking capacity in Ohio. The plan will add at least 1,400 new parking spaces at 33 state-owned locations across 19 counties, effectively more than doubling the current number of truck parking spots managed by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Currently, Ohio offers around 14,200 truck parking spaces, primarily at privately owned truck stops. This expansion aims to provide safer and more accessible resting places for professional drivers navigating the state’s busy highways.

“As Ohio’s economy continues to grow, so do the number of trucks traveling on Ohio’s network of interstates and state routes,” DeWine said. “By expanding safe, accessible places for drivers to rest, we’re supporting the people who keep our economy moving and making it safer for everyone on our roads.”

ODOT Director Boratyn noted that this effort will position Ohio as the national leader in state-owned long-term truck parking.

“Ohio’s new truck parking plan is a major step forward in improving safety for truck drivers and everyone on the road… setting the standard for safety and service.”

Where New Parking Will Be Added

The additional parking spaces will be built or expanded in counties including:

Allen

Ashland

Ashtabula

Auglaize

Belmont

Clermont

Fayette

Franklin

Gallia

Guernsey

Henry

Lake

Mahoning

Medina

Ross

Summit

Warren

Wyandot

Each site will include safety features such as lighting and restroom facilities to improve comfort and security for drivers.

Project Schedule and Investment

Construction start: 2026

Completion expected: Late 2027

What This Means for Truck Drivers

Expanding truck parking will help reduce the risk of driver fatigue and hours-of-service violations, improving safety for truckers and all motorists on Ohio roads. By becoming the top state for public long-term truck parking, Ohio is setting a new standard for driver amenities and road safety.
