I-76 Closure in Philadelphia Has Ended

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, a short-term bridge repair project that closed a portion of westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) has now concluded. Crews completed bridge deck work near the Grays Ferry neighborhood, and all lanes have since reopened.

Although that section of I-76 is now fully open, drivers in the area are encouraged to remain alert for any future updates, as Philadelphia continues investing in repairs and maintenance across its aging highway system.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that construction will begin on the Interstate 24 bridge spanning the Ohio River in Massac County, connecting Illinois to Kentucky. Weather permitting, the work is scheduled to commence on Monday. During construction, traffic on the mile-long bridge will be reduced to one lane in both directions, with at least one lane remaining open for travel at all times.

Lane Reductions and Restrictions

To facilitate construction, temporary concrete barriers will be installed along the bridge’s centerline, requiring restricted lane widths. Travelers, especially during peak hours, are advised to consider alternate routes to avoid expected delays.

Key details to keep in mind:

• The nearby Brookport Bridge remains closed to semi-trucks, as it has a weight limit of 15 tons and is restricted to just 8 feet in width and 9 feet, 6 inches in height.

• IDOT recommends truckers use the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge near Cairo, Illinois. This alternative crossing is roughly 36 miles south via Kentucky or about 58 miles through Illinois.

Construction Timeline

The lane reductions will remain in effect until October 14. As the $38 million construction effort progresses, additional restrictions for future phases of the project will be announced. The project is anticipated to reach completion in 2027.
