“We are honored to team up with Wreaths Across America,” said Courtney Niemann, executive director of SCF. “This partnership gives our community in the trucking industry a meaningful way to participate in a time-honored tradition of remembrance and gratitude for our veterans.”

Through this partnership, SCF is helping highlight WAA’s mission of Remembering the Fallen, Honoring Those Who Serve, and Teaching the Next Generation the Value of Freedom. Drivers, carriers, trucking industry partners, family, and friends are encouraged to visit the SCF landing page on the WAA site. From there, supporters can select “Sponsor Wreaths,” choose a location, and complete a sponsorship to place a wreath at a veteran’s gravesite.

Shared Values Between Truckers and the Military

The trucking industry has a deep connection with the military. Many professional drivers are veterans themselves, continuing to serve the nation by keeping the economy moving. Both communities embrace values such as commitment, resilience, and sacrifice, making this partnership a natural way to honor these ideals.

“By supporting Wreaths Across America, the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund and our partners are helping ensure that every veteran’s grave is recognized with a wreath, symbolizing the gratitude of a nation that will never forget their service,” said Norita Taylor, SCF board president and director of public relations at the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA).

How Truckers Can Get Involved

“The St. Christopher Fund encourages every individual and organization across the trucking and logistics sector to participate,” SCF said. “Whether sponsoring a wreath, volunteering on-site at the ceremony, or spreading the word among colleagues and loved ones, your involvement helps amplify the message of remembrance.”

Beyond honoring veterans, SCF supports the trucking community through nationwide short-term relief programs for Class A OTR drivers affected by illness or injury in the past year. The nonprofit also provides free preventive health and wellness initiatives, including tobacco cessation, diabetes prevention, chronic disease management, at-home cancer screenings, and vaccine vouchers, all aimed at keeping drivers on the road safely.

Truck drivers searching for a better work-life balance are finding more options than ever before. Whether picking up local routes, moving to regional driving, or working dedicated lanes, drivers are tailoring careers to fit their lifestyles and family needs, without losing sight of solid paychecks and professional fulfillment.

Trucking Jobs with the Most Home Time

Drivers looking to maximize home time often gravitate towards local trucking roles. Local drivers usually get home daily and enjoy steady routines, supporting both mental health and family connections. Regional drivers are home most weekends or several times a week, striking a balance between earning potential and downtime, especially attractive for those with children or active households. Over-the-road (OTR) drivers remain the backbone of long-haul transport, but often go two or three weeks between home visits, making them less appealing to those prioritizing family time.

Job Type

Home Time

Average Salary

Best For

Local

Daily, 40–50 hours/week

$60,000–$90,000+

Parents, night drivers, those valuing routine

Regional

Weekly / weekends

$70,000–$98,000

Drivers seeking balance, some travel

OTR

1–3 days home every 2–3 weeks

$75,000–$110,000+

Solo or team drivers preferring longer hauls

Many local drivers report going home every night, much like a typical 9–5 worker, though longer shifts or occasional nights away aren’t uncommon. Regional drivers remain close to home and frequently sleep at home during the week, offering predictable schedules without sacrificing earning power. OTR drivers may earn more but sacrifice regular home time unless they choose dedicated routes through companies with strong home-time promises.

Why Work-Life Balance Varies

Pay, home time, and job satisfaction vary by job type, region, and company policy. Top factors impacting balance include:

Driving style (local, regional, OTR)

Company offerings (dedicated vs. flexible schedules)

Location and access to major freight hubs

Experience (seasoned drivers often access better routes)

Local jobs enable drivers to build healthy routines, exercise habits, and active family involvement, while regional jobs often come with higher pay and a blend of travel and home life. OTR roles suit those seeking independence and larger paychecks but require calculated planning for family and rest periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which driving jobs offer the most home time?
Local delivery and city freight roles top the list for daily home time, followed by regional routes that get drivers home on weekends or more.

Do higher-paying trucking jobs sacrifice work-life balance?
Specialized OTR or team driving often delivers bigger paychecks but less frequent home visits. Regional jobs typically strike a compromise between earnings and downtime.

Are regional jobs a good middle ground?
Yes. Drivers on regional routes consistently report solid earning potential alongside weekends at home, creating an ideal balance for many families.

Does experience help improve work-life balance?
More experience can unlock access to dedicated lanes and roles with tailored home schedules and added PTO.

Will flexible schedules become even more common?
Driver demand for flexible shifts is increasing, and more companies are creating local/regional opportunities to attract and retain talent.

Ready for Your Best Work-Life Balance?

As the industry turns a corner toward sustainability, two names dominate the electric semi conversation: Freightliner’s eCascadia and the Tesla Semi. Both aim to shake up the world of heavy-duty trucking—but do they actually deliver for real OTR drivers, or is it all just marketing noise?

Let’s break down the specs, real-world performance, and what it all means for drivers navigating the future.

Power & Performance

Tesla Semi

Motors: Three independent electric motors

Horsepower: Over 1,000 HP

Torque: Not officially listed, but designed for max hauling power

Acceleration: 0–60 mph in 20 seconds with a full 80,000 lbs

Uphill: Can maintain highway speeds on a 5% grade

Freightliner eCascadia

Motors: Single or dual electric motor setup

Horsepower: 320 to 470 HP

Torque: Up to 23,000 lb-ft (dual motor config)

Acceleration: Tuned for local and regional routes

Speed: Highway-capable, not performance-focused

If you’re running regional loads, eCascadia’s specs are more than enough. For long-haul power and highway-grade climbs, the Tesla Semi edges out.

Range & Charging

Tesla Semi

Battery: ~800–900 kWh

Range: Up to 500 miles per charge

Charging: 1 MW DC fast charging (70% in 30 minutes)

eCascadia

Battery: 291–438 kWh

Range: 155 to 230 miles

Charging: 80% in around 90 minutes (depending on setup)

Tesla’s longer range puts it in a better position for long-haul and OTR drivers. But range isn’t the only factor—charging infrastructure still makes or breaks electric truck viability.

Real-World Use & Field Data

Tesla Semi has proven itself under pressure. In NACFE’s Run on Less – Electric Depot, Tesla Semis were clocking over 1,000 miles in a single day, with daily averages of around 923 km (574 miles).

Freightliner’s eCascadia is already in the wild. Reyes Coca-Cola added 29 to its fleet and reported cleaner operations, reliable power, and quieter rides.

Both trucks have clear use cases—eCascadia for regional distribution, and Tesla Semi for longer linehauls.

Support, Availability & Infrastructure

Tesla Semi

Limited initial rollout

Mass production expected by late 2025

Megacharger network still in development

Maintenance and service hubs still ramping up

eCascadia

Already in production and fleet use

Uses industry-standard CCS fast charging

Supported by Freightliner’s national dealer network

If you’re trying to electrify a fleet today, Freightliner wins on availability and support. But Tesla’s rollout could make waves by next year.

So—Is It the Future, or Just Hype?

The future’s not hype—it’s here. But not every route is ready for it.

Tesla Semi is the better pick for OTR and long-haul applications—once charging and service infrastructure catch up.

Freightliner eCascadia is ideal for fleets doing regional or last-mile freight and looking to cut emissions now.

Electrification isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s a spectrum—and both of these trucks bring something legit to the table.
