Finding a safe spot to park a rig is one of the biggest headaches on the road. Truck Parking Club says they’re working to fix that problem in a big way, and their network just hit a major milestone.

The company now has more than 3,000 private parking locations available for drivers and fleets. Those spots span 49 states and total more than 51,000 reservable spaces. What’s getting attention in the trucking world is how fast the platform is growing — it jumped from 2,000 to 3,000 locations in only four months.

Co-founder and CEO Evan Shelley says the mission goes beyond just finding a place to park. “We’re solving the parking shortage and proving that parking itself is a strategic operational tool,” said Shelley. “Whether it’s a driver who needs safe overnight parking, a fleet executing drop trailer programs, or a company reducing liability by eliminating ramp parking, we’re the flexible parking partner that adapts to every need.”

Drivers can reserve spots by the hour, day, week, or month using the company’s website or mobile app. Customer support is available 24 hours a day and is staffed by former drivers who understand the realities of running out of hours or searching for a safe place to shut down.

With parking becoming increasingly scarce in busy freight areas, many truckers are starting to treat parking reservations in the same way they plan fuel stops or delivery schedules. Platforms like this give drivers more control over their downtime and help fleets cut back on parking-related fines and delays.

If the Truck Parking Club keeps expanding at this pace, finding a legal parking spot might finally become one less thing to stress about when the clock is running low.

The trucking community in New York is celebrating a significant win following the New York City Council’s recent decision to authorize overnight truck parking in designated industrial business zones. This groundbreaking move aims to address a long-standing issue that has burdened drivers while offering practical benefits to surrounding communities and the city’s economy.

A Major Shift for Truck Parking in NYC

Under the newly passed legislation, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) will implement overnight parking options in industrial business areas. For years, truck drivers have struggled with a lack of suitable parking spots in New York City, forcing them to park in areas ill-equipped for heavy-duty vehicles. This issue has posed challenges for operators and raised safety concerns for nearby neighborhoods.

“For far too long, the shortage of overnight parking for truck drivers in New York City has forced trucks to park in areas where they shouldn’t be,” said Zach Miller, vice president of government affairs for the Trucking Association of New York (TANY). “This problem has been exacerbated by next-day and same-day demand and strict federal Hours-of-Service regulations. This creates an unsafe environment for both drivers and the surrounding communities. We want to thank City Council Member Dr. Nantasha Williams, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, and the bill’s co-sponsors for their commitment to advancing commonsense solutions to address existing challenges around overnight truck parking.”

With this new mandate, truck drivers will soon have better access to secure, legal parking options, helping reduce the challenges caused by overnight parking shortages.

Building on the Success of the Overnight Truck Parking Pilot

The legislation builds on the foundation laid by NYC DOT’s Overnight Truck Parking Pilot. This program, which introduced metered parking within industrial business zones, demonstrated the potential of structured overnight parking to improve freight logistics across the city. The pilot served as a testing ground, paving the way for this larger-scale solution.

The program aims to enhance resource efficiency by designating parking spaces for commercial trucks in areas already zoned for industrial purposes. According to industry experts, this approach holds the promise of optimizing freight movement while simultaneously lessening the negative impact on non-industrial neighborhoods.

“Trucks are the backbone of the New York City economy—responsible for transporting almost 90% of goods—but there is only one parking space for every 11 trucks in the U.S. and even worse in dense urban areas such as New York City,” Miller said. “Providing a safe place to park is not just a kind gesture; it has the power to improve efficiency, reduce costs for drivers, and preserve neighborhoods. It’s a simple change that helps the entire city run better—and we commend our city leaders for working to make this a reality.”

Benefits Beyond the Trucking Industry

This change isn’t just a win for truck drivers—it benefits New York’s economy and local communities, too. By providing legal and accessible parking, the legislation seeks to enhance the overall safety and quality of life in neighborhoods historically affected by trucks parked in unauthorized areas. Fewer trucks parked on residential streets will mean reduced overnight noise and increased safety for pedestrians.

Additionally, improving parking options for truck drivers can lead to gains in supply chain efficiency, potentially resulting in cost savings that ripple through to consumers. Delivered goods may arrive faster and more reliably, contributing to heightened economic activity.

A Long-Awaited Move Forward

The lack of adequate truck parking has long been a pain point for the transportation industry, both in New York and nationwide. With federal Hours-of-Service regulations requiring drivers to rest for specific periods, finding a safe, legal place to park has become overwhelming in densely populated urban areas.

Industry leaders are optimistic that this legislation will set a precedent for other cities facing similar challenges. The collaboration between the NYC Council, NYC DOT, and advocates like the Trucking Association of New York demonstrates the kind of cooperative action necessary for tackling complex urban issues.

What Lies Ahead

With the passage of this legislation, the next step involves the NYC Department of Transportation’s official rollout of overnight parking zones. Stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure the program’s success and its alignment with community needs.

This policy marks a meaningful step toward solving the truck parking shortage, with wide-ranging benefits for drivers, city residents, and the local economy. It’s proof that smart urban planning can create win-win solutions when all voices are heard and considered.

New York City has introduced a metered overnight truck parking initiative aimed at enhancing compliance with parking regulations and alleviating residential community concerns over illegal truck parking. The pilot program allows commercial vehicles, including large tractor trailers, to park legally within designated industrial business zones (IBZs), providing drivers with safe, regulated spaces for mandated rest.

The Launch of NYC’s Overnight Truck Parking Initiative

New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced the launch of the Overnight Truck Parking Pilot program, which seeks to balance the city’s bustling commerce needs with neighborhood safety and livability.

“As the nation’s largest city and a global hub for commerce, New York City depends on the movement of goods to drive our economy forward, but we must also protect neighborhood livability and street safety,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “This Overnight Truck Parking Pilot is a win-win that will add 45 spaces for tractor trailers to communities long burdened by unregulated truck parking — supporting our vital trucking industry, reducing illegal overnight parking in our residential communities, and providing truck drivers with the rest they need in a safe and regulated environment. We will continue to build a city where safety, commerce, and quality of life can all thrive together.”

Program Details

The year-long trial will create 45 legal parking spaces in three selected IBZs to address illegal parking issues in residential neighborhoods.

Designated Zones:

Flatlands/Fairfield IBZ, Brooklyn – Flatlands Avenue from Erskine Street to Fountain Avenue.

Hunts Point IBZ, The Bronx – Ryawa Avenue from Manida Street to Halleck Street.

Maspeth IBZ, Queens – 56th Road from 43rd Street to 49th Street.

Truck operators can reserve these spaces via the ParkNYC app, paying $10 per eight-hour block (24/7 availability from Monday to Saturday).

“Businesses are encouraged to sign up for a ParkNYC Business Account to manage parking centrally and ensure compliance effortlessly,” NYCDOT shared in their announcement.

Addressing a Longtime Challenge

The program directly tackles the growing illegal overnight truck parking issue that disrupts residential areas. Local officials praised the initiative for offering apparent, legal parking alternatives.

“This pilot program takes a thoughtful approach to addressing the challenges of illegal overnight truck parking in our neighborhoods,” said State Senator Roxanne Persuad.

Council member Chris Banks also emphasized the program’s potential to preserve neighborhood quality of life. “Our residential areas shouldn’t be oversaturated with commercial vehicles. This pilot gives drivers a safe option while reducing disruptions in our communities.”

Broader Freight Management Solutions

The pilot is part of NYC’s broader efforts to address the impact of commercial freight, which accounts for nearly 90% of goods delivered throughout the city. Alongside this initiative, NYCDOT is rolling out several complementary programs to ease congestion, enhance safety, and improve New York’s overall freight ecosystem, including:

Microhubs: Dedicated zones for transitioning freight to eco-friendly delivery modes like cargo bikes.

Loading Zones: Over 3,500 designated loading zones combat double-parking and improve traffic flow.

Blue Highways Initiative: Integrating NYC waterways for cargo movement to reduce road congestion.

Off-Hour Deliveries (OHD): Incentives encouraging deliveries during off-peak hours.

Automatic Camera Enforcement (ACE): Cameras on buses to issue penalties for double-parking violations.

A Vital Solution to a National Problem

Lack of truck parking isn’t just a New York City issue. Nationally, there are 11 trucks for every single parking spot, according to Zach Miller, vice president of government affairs for the Trucking Association of New York.

“In dense areas like NYC, the shortage is even more severe,” Miller explained. “This forces drivers to choose between violating mandatory rest regulations or parking in unsafe, unauthorized spots. This pilot is a significant step toward providing safe, legal options for drivers while relieving impacted neighborhoods.”

Community Impact

Local leaders and stakeholders agree this program presents an opportunity to balance commercial logistics with community concerns. Julie Won, a council member for Queens, highlighted the advantages of designated parking zones for community safety.

“This adds clarity to enforcement while prioritizing the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users,” Won stated.

Moving Forward

The Overnight Truck Parking Pilot is designed to test scalable solutions for the challenges posed by NYC’s robust freight industry. Success will hinge on usage rates, compliance, and impact on residential areas.

Truck drivers have a fresh option for parking in Gainesville, Texas, with the debut of All American Truckers Paradise—a venue that redefines the concept of a truck stop.

On Friday, November 8, the much-anticipated Truckers Paradise opened its doors, claiming the title of the largest travel center in the U.S. This facility is conveniently located at the site of a former outlet mall at 4321 N. Interstate 35 and promises a host of amenities tailored specifically for truck drivers.

“This week is our soft opening to begin testing systems, conduct training and ramp up fueling capacity,” Truckers Paradise CEO Dean Ash told Land Line. “Please come and let us know what the most important items in a truck are stop or travel center.
Adjacent to the Truckers Paradise complex are a Cracker Barrel restaurant and a movie theater. Coming in December, a Sbarro pizzeria and Cut Café, specializing in soul food, will also open.

Parking is ample, with 178 diagonal spaces providing 6 feet of separation for safety and security. Plans are underway to expand with an additional 250 spaces. Long-term parking and RV sites with full hookups are available, along with accommodations for oversized loads.

Throughout November, truckers can enjoy free overnight parking by signing up here. Post-promotion, spaces can be reserved via Truck Parking Club for $15 daily.

A common issue at other stops—drivers idling at the fuel island—is addressed at Truckers Paradise with mobile fueling. While enjoying the facility’s offerings, a portable dispenser visits trucks parked in designated areas, refueling them. This mobile service extends to the truck wash as well.

While many standard truck stops offer similar amenities, Ash has envisioned transforming the former outlet mall into a “trucker village,” creating a comprehensive hub for all trucker needs. With limited parking options at locations like salons, banks, or medical facilities, Ash plans to bring these services to one accessible spot.

“We are basically bringing the city to the trucker, because the trucker can’t get to the amenities in the city,” Ash said. “We will be the largest truck stop by amenities to the professional driver, with almost 200,000 square feet of services.”

To reach Truckers Paradise, take Exit 501, and turn left immediately past the Hampton Inn Hotel on the west of I-35 to enter the rear of the stop.
