Truck drivers traveling through World Cup host cities this summer may continue to encounter traffic delays, road closures, and transportation restrictions as matches and related events take place across multiple states.

The latest update comes from Pennsylvania, where transportation officials have outlined traffic management plans around World Cup activities in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Restrictions Remain in Place for Upcoming Matches

Philadelphia hosted its first World Cup match on June 14 and is scheduled to host additional matches on June 19, 22, 25, and 27, along with a July 4 match. The city is also serving as a location for various World Cup-related events throughout the tournament.

According to information shared by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation with the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, current match-day restrictions apply only to oversize and overweight vehicles.

While standard commercial traffic is not currently subject to special restrictions, trucking companies and drivers should still prepare for heavier traffic volumes, travel delays, and additional traffic management measures throughout the area.

State officials noted that attendance levels, security requirements, and changing traffic conditions could lead to adjustments as the event continues.

Road Closures Affect Multiple Areas of Philadelphia

PennDOT has also implemented road closures in portions of Philadelphia connected to World Cup preparations and activities.

Areas affected include:

East Fairmount Park
Center City
Lemon Hill
Benjamin Franklin Parkway

Drivers traveling through the city are encouraged to monitor traffic conditions and allow extra travel time when operating near event locations.

Other Host Cities Prepare for Increased Demand

Philadelphia is not the only city managing transportation challenges related to the tournament.

New York City previously announced plans to restrict deliveries on World Cup match days. The Trucking Association of New York has also launched a World Cup resource hub that provides traffic updates, operational information, and alternative delivery guidance for carriers and drivers.

Texas officials are also expecting significant traffic delays around the Dallas-Fort Worth area during World Cup activities. Several major roadways in the region are expected to experience closures and increased congestion as spectators travel to and from events.

Missouri Encourages Drivers to Consider Alternate Routes

Transportation officials in Missouri are encouraging truck drivers to consider alternate routes around Kansas City during the tournament.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, nearly all state road construction activity will take place away from active travel lanes whenever possible to help maximize roadway capacity.

MoDOT has also said transportation updates will be shared through statewide and district social media channels as conditions change.

Trip Planning May Help Reduce Delays

With multiple host cities implementing traffic management plans, truck drivers traveling near World Cup venues may benefit from reviewing routes before departure and building additional time into schedules.

Traffic patterns, security measures, and attendance levels can all affect roadway conditions, making planning especially important during major international events.

Additional transportation information for each host city is available on the FIFA website.

Truck drivers running through Pennsylvania are starting to see more legal places to shut down. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has confirmed it has opened 339 new truck parking spaces statewide, marking early progress toward its broader commitment to add at least 1,200 truck parking spots by the end of 2026.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the new spaces are already available at 24 locations across the Commonwealth. These sites include Interstate on ramps, weigh stations, and other state-owned properties that can be used quickly without waiting for long-term construction projects. For drivers dealing with packed rest areas and limited hours of service flexibility, the additions offer immediate relief in high traffic corridors.

Why These New Spaces Matter to Drivers

Finding safe and legal parking has become one of the most consistent challenges for professional drivers. Congested freight lanes, tight delivery windows, and hours of service limits often leave drivers searching late in the day with few options. PennDOT says the newly opened locations were selected to address those pressure points while allowing drivers to meet federal rest requirements without risking violations or unsafe parking.

“As a commercial driver’s license holder, I know how critical safe parking options are for the people who keep goods moving to and through Pennsylvania,” said Mike Carroll. “The Shapiro Administration is wasting no time in making good on this commitment to give them more options to meet their federal rest requirements. This is a commonsense approach to enhance safety, and the department is looking at ways to add even more spaces.”

Locations Where New Truck Parking Is Now Available

Before the end of 2025, PennDOT completed truck parking additions at the following locations:

Interstate 99 on ramps in Bellwood, Blair County

I-79 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Butler County

Route 100 northbound weigh station in Chester County

Four I-79 on ramps in Erie County

I-81 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Franklin County

Location off I 70 in Fulton County

I-380 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Lackawanna County

Location off Route 315 in Luzerne County

Route 9404 William Penn Highway Park and Ride in Northampton County

Location off Route 6 in Pike County

I-81 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Schuylkill County

Two locations off U.S. 11 in Snyder County

I 79 southbound weigh station in Washington County

I-83 northbound and southbound weigh stations in York County

These locations were chosen because they could be activated quickly and are already positioned along heavily traveled freight routes.

How Drivers Can Find These Parking Spots

To make the new spaces easier to locate, PennDOT added a Public Truck Parking feature to the 511PA system. Drivers can view available parking on www.511PA.com or through the 511PA mobile app. The map shows both existing truck parking and newly designated locations, with updates added as more sites open.

What Comes Next for Pennsylvania Truck Parking

The 339 spaces are only part of PennDOT’s long-term plan. The agency has stated it is continuing to evaluate additional state-owned sites and weigh stations where more parking can be added quickly. These early openings are intended to reduce immediate pressure while larger expansion projects move forward.

For drivers moving freight through Pennsylvania, the added parking means fewer last-minute decisions, less stress at the end of the day, and more opportunities to stay compliant while staying safe.

The Shapiro Administration has delivered 339 more parking spaces to truck drivers traveling through Pennsylvania as part of its commitment to adding at least 1,200 truck parking spaces by the end of 2026.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has opened these spots at 24 locations across the state, including Interstate on-ramps, other Commonwealth-owned sites, and weigh stations where Pennsylvania State Police conduct motor carrier safety enforcement.

Providing safe and legal parking

This marks the first statewide expansion of designated truck parking spaces outside of traditional facility construction projects. The effort is intended to provide safe, legal options for commercial drivers to meet federal hours-of-service rest requirements, address a long-standing nationwide parking shortage, and improve overall roadway safety.

“As a commercial driver’s license holder, I know how critical safe parking options are for the people who keep goods moving to and through Pennsylvania,” said Mike Carroll, PennDOT secretary. “The Shapiro Administration is wasting no time in making good on this commitment to give them more options to meet their federal rest requirements. This is a commonsense approach to enhance safety, and the department is looking at ways to add even more spaces.”

New truck parking locations

Before the end of 2025, PennDOT added truck parking spaces at the following locations:

Interstate 99 on-ramps in Bellwood, Blair County

I-79 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Butler County

Route 100 northbound weigh station in Chester County

Four I-79 on-ramps in Erie County

I-81 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Franklin County

Location off I-70 in Fulton County

I-380 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Lackawanna County

Location off Route 315 in Luzerne County

Location off Route 9404 in Northampton County

Location off Route 6 in Pike County

I-81 northbound and southbound weigh stations in Schuylkill County

Two locations off U.S. 11 in Snyder County

I-79 southbound weigh station in Washington County

I-83 northbound and southbound weigh stations in York County

Parking details

PennDOT’s designated truck parking spots are located on Interstate on-ramps without sight distance or safety concerns, weigh stations used for motor carrier safety enforcement, and other appropriate locations within highway rights of way. PennDOT and Pennsylvania State Police worked together to identify sites that could be designated quickly and cost-effectively. Each location is marked with truck parking signage installed by PennDOT.

In October, PennDOT launched a Public Truck Parking option on www.511PA.com and the 511PA smartphone app. The map displays existing truck parking locations, and newly designated sites are added as they become available.

Statewide truck parking strategy

Truck parking shortages were highlighted in a 2023 study by the Pennsylvania State Transportation Advisory Committee, which recommended repurposing select state-owned surplus properties. This expansion directly responds to that recommendation.

The parking initiative also builds on additional actions outlined in the study. PennDOT has established a Truck Parking Task Force to collaborate with regional and municipal partners along high-priority freight corridors. The department continues to work with the trucking industry, local governments, and planning organizations to promote long-term parking solutions statewide.

Motorists and commercial drivers can check road conditions and parking availability by visiting www.511PA.com. The service provides traffic delay alerts, weather information, traffic speeds, and access to more than 1,200 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone app, by calling 5-1-1, or through regional alerts.

Information on Pennsylvania transportation infrastructure projects is available here.

New Campaign Warns Truckers About Low Bridge Strikes Across Pennsylvania

Hitting a low bridge isn’t just a frustrating mistake — it can cost you your equipment, your time, and sometimes your job. That’s why the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has launched a new campaign aimed squarely at helping drivers avoid it in the first place.

It’s called “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right,” and it’s PennDOT’s latest push to raise awareness about the risks of bridge strikes, especially for truckers and anyone hauling taller loads.

Real Stats, Real Damage

Between 2013 and 2023, there were more than 600 reported bridge strikes in Pennsylvania alone, according to PennDOT. That’s not just a few busted signs — it means mangled trailers, damaged infrastructure, traffic backups, and sometimes serious injury.

“When a vehicle hits a bridge, the impact can shut down a road, damage expensive freight, and even put emergency crews at risk,” the agency warns.

Who They’re Talking To

This campaign isn’t just for big rigs. It targets:

CDL holders

Non-CDL drivers in leased or rented trucks

Delivery truck drivers

RV drivers

Movers using box trucks

Anyone behind the wheel of a tall vehicle.

One of the campaign’s key messages? Just because it’s not your truck doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. It’s your job to know how tall that vehicle is — and whether it’ll clear the bridge ahead.

Know Your Numbers

Let’s break it down. In Pennsylvania:

If your vehicle or load is over 13’6″, you need a Special Hauling Permit.

Bridges under 14’6″ are required to have low-clearance signage both at the structure and before it.

But here’s the kicker — GPS apps often don’t consider height. So if you’re trusting Google Maps to keep your truck out of trouble, you could be setting yourself up for a wreck.

“Drivers should always watch for and adhere to signage indicating bridge heights and not rely solely on navigation devices,” PennDOT reminds.

And if you’re hauling equipment with raised beds, those count too. The campaign emphasizes double-checking liftgate positions, equipment arms, and anything that might extend your height — even temporarily.

Long-Term Fixes Underway

PennDOT isn’t just pointing fingers at drivers. The department says it’s also working to help on its end by raising bridges where possible.

“In the past decade, more than 160 bridges with clearances under 16 feet, 5 inches were raised by at least 3 inches during reconstruction,” the agency noted.

That helps, but it doesn’t change this bottom-line fact: it’s your responsibility to know your height and plan your route accordingly.

One Simple Check Can Save Your Job

For drivers who’ve seen what a bridge strike can do — the bent trailers, sheared-off roofs, and long insurance headaches — this message hits home. Just a quick check of your truck height before rolling out can save a world of hurt.

So the next time you hop into a new cab, get behind the wheel of a rental, or load up a tall piece of equipment, take a second and ask yourself: Will it clear?

Because “I didn’t know” won’t fly when you’re stuck under a bridge.

PennDOT’s rapid emergency response on I-95 and WVDOT’s remarkable Wellsburg Bridge over the Ohio River were celebrated for their unique contributions to local communities.

PennDOT received the prestigious Grand Prize for its swift actions on the I-95/Cottman Avenue Emergency Response project. WVDOT’s innovative Wellsburg Bridge project won the People’s Choice Award, recognized for bridging the gap between communities that had long been disconnected.

“We are incredibly proud of the two winning projects, which demonstrate how both states respond to their residents’ needs, whether through emergency repairs or reconnecting communities,” said Jim Tymon, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

PennDOT was tested in June 2023, when a devastating fire, sparked by a fuel tanker accident, shut down a crucial stretch of I-95 in Philadelphia—a major north-south corridor. In just 12 days, PennDOT’s $4.5 million project team created a temporary wall and roadway to restore this essential route, providing a swift solution to an unexpected challenge.

The $168 million Wellsburg Bridge project by WVDOT restored a long-needed link between Brilliant, Ohio, and Wellsburg, West Virginia. Before the bridge, the communities were connected only by a ferry service, which had since ceased. This project shortened travel times by eliminating a 30-minute detour and maintained barge traffic flow on the river throughout construction.

Sponsored by AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the America’s Transportation Awards honor state transportation projects that make a positive impact on local communities nationwide. This year’s program saw 106 nominations from 39 states.

Both winning projects were awarded $10,000, which recipients can donate to a charity or a scholarship related to transportation.
