A stretch of U.S. Highway 189 in southwest Wyoming is about to get busier for all the wrong reasons. Construction tied to the Kemmerer South wildlife crossings project is moving forward, and drivers should be ready for changes across roughly 30 miles of roadway.

The project is backed by a $24.3 million federal grant, along with $8.8 million from partner groups. Plans include seven underpasses, one overpass, and fencing running along both sides of the highway to help guide wildlife away from traffic and toward safe crossing points.

What’s Already Been Done

Crews made headway before winter set in. Around 20 miles of fence posts were installed, and dirt work was completed to set up detours around the future underpass locations. That early work is now setting the stage for a more active construction season.

What’s Changing This Spring and Summer

Starting in April, traffic will be pushed onto gravel detours around work zones. Those setups will stay in place as crews continue building the crossing structures.

Expect slower travel, uneven surfaces, and delays, especially during peak work periods. With multiple areas under construction, traffic patterns may shift as the project moves along.

WYDOT has already warned that delays should be expected.

Timeline Moving Forward

The work isn’t a quick fix. The overall project is scheduled for completion in October 2027.

“The contractor is working hard, fine-tuning the schedule and keeping things on track for the project,” Wyoming Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Jennifer Hoffman said. “If things go well, our goal is to have all eight structures constructed in 2026, weather and schedule permitting.”

As always in Wyoming, the weather could change that timeline.

Why These Projects Are Showing Up More Often

Wildlife crossings are becoming a more common sight, especially across Western corridors where animal movement overlaps with highway traffic.

While construction can slow things down in the short term, the goal is to cut down on wildlife-vehicle crashes. That can mean fewer disruptions, less damage, and safer conditions over time.

Colorado’s Recent Example

A similar effort wrapped up in Colorado in December 2025. The state completed what it describes as the world’s largest wildlife overpass over Interstate 25 near the Greenland Interchange.

The structure spans six lanes and reconnects 39,000 acres of habitat used by elk, mule deer, and pronghorn. Officials expect it to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes along that section of I-25 by 90%.

Before it was built, the area averaged about one wildlife-related crash per day, according to state transportation officials.

The overpass was part of the larger I-25 South Gap project and, like the Wyoming effort, relied on federal funding and support from multiple agencies.

What Drivers Should Keep in Mind

If your route takes you through this part of Wyoming, plan for extra time and stay alert in work zones. Gravel detours and active construction aren’t going away anytime soon.

The end goal is safer roads, but for now, getting through the area will take a little more patience.

Safety in highway work zones is a critical focus for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) as they join a nationwide effort to raise awareness about protecting road workers. With the theme “Respect the Zone, So We All Get Home,” TDOT is urging drivers to move over and slow down for highway workers during this year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 21–25).

Work Zone Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility

“Work zone safety is a shared responsibility, whether behind the wheel or working on the side of the road,” said Deputy Governor and TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley. He added, “We engineer our roads to be as safe as possible, but no amount of engineering can change driver behavior. 113 TDOT workers have been killed in work zones. Let’s work together to ensure everyone makes it home safely.”

As spring and summer kick off peak construction season, Tennessee’s highways will see crews performing major projects like interstate expansions, roadway repaving, and even essential tasks like litter collection. These work zones are necessary to maintain and improve roadways but come with increased risks for workers and drivers alike.

Last year, Tennessee reported 16 fatalities in work zone crashes. As of this year, there have already been 35 incidents where vehicles crashed into TDOT equipment, including HELP Trucks that assist stranded motorists.

TDOT’s Work Zone Safety Campaign

To combat these alarming statistics, TDOT has been running the “Work with Us—Move Over, Slow Down” safety campaign since 2017. This initiative reminds drivers across Tennessee about the importance of year-round vigilance in work zones. It encourages motorists to take the “Work with Us” pledge to commit to safer driving behavior.

Key messages will be shared on TDOT’s overhead Dynamic Message Signs, which are visible in major cities, including Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. Orange lighting will also illuminate prominent buildings and bridges throughout the state to symbolize the campaign. Additionally, “Work with Us” signs will be stationed near construction areas to further emphasize driver safety.

The Human Impact of Work Zone Incidents

Work zone safety is more than just numbers. Crashes can leave a lasting impact on families, workers, and communities. TDOT reports that 2024 there were 2,318 total crashes in work zones, including 563 that resulted in injuries. These sobering statistics highlight the urgent need for drivers to prioritize safety.

Unfortunately, risks aren’t limited to primary work zones. TDOT’s secondary work zones, where HELP Trucks and other first responders provide assistance, also face significant dangers. These vehicles are often struck while helping motorists, putting workers in harm’s way.

How You Can Help

TDOT urges drivers to take specific actions to protect both themselves and workers:

Check traffic conditions before leaving: Use TDOT SmartWay to plan your route and avoid unnecessary delays.

Put your phone away: Secure your device in a hands-free system to eliminate distractions.

Follow Move Over laws: Slow down and change lanes when you see flashing lights or vehicles in work zones.

Join the Effort to Save Lives

With thousands of crashes and dozens of injuries each year, small actions like reducing speed and staying alert can make a significant difference. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is asking every driver to do their part to help ensure “We All Get Home.”

For the first time since Hurricane Helene devastated the region last September, Interstate 40 has reopened in western North Carolina. Traffic is now allowed with one lane open in each direction.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), along with its contractors, has worked tirelessly to stabilize the highway and reopen a portion of it. Efforts focused on fortifying the remaining westbound lanes, making it possible to facilitate travel for residents and businesses once again.

Source: NCDOT

Official Statement from NCDOT

Wanda Payne, NCDOT Division 14 Engineer, explained, “We are happy to have this open for the people who depend on a connected transportation system between North Carolina and Tennessee. This opening improves the flow of people, goods and services between our two states and between locations far beyond Haywood County.”

Key Details on the Reopened Stretch

The reopened stretch spans approximately 12 miles, connecting Cold Springs Creek Road (Exit 7) in North Carolina with Big Creek Road (Exit 447) in Tennessee. Restoration efforts in Tennessee have also contributed to making this section passable. However, these are not typical interstate conditions—be prepared for some changes:

Lanes are narrower, and shoulder areas are smaller than usual.

A 35-mph speed limit is enforced across this segment.

A 9-inch by 9-inch concrete barrier divides opposing lanes of traffic.

Emergency access points allow EMS vehicles to reach the area if needed.

An emergency-only lane has been designated on the eastbound side.

Standard 18-wheelers can travel the corridor, but wide loads are prohibited.

Travel Tips and Advisories

Traveling through the Pigeon River Gorge corridor will come with challenges due to these temporary changes. Officials warn drivers to expect delays during peak traffic times, especially Friday through Sunday afternoons and holiday weekends.

Alternate Route Recommendations:

For those looking to bypass potential congestion, NCDOT suggests taking I-26 from Asheville to Kingsport, Tennessee, and then continuing on I-81 South back to I-40.

Tractor-Trailer Advisory:

Standard tractor-trailers are allowed to pass through the reopened section, but drivers are cautioned that many GPS apps might incorrectly suggest alternate routes within the gorge. These options are not available for tractor-trailers beyond Exit 20 (U.S. 276). Wide loads must detour via I-77 and I-81 to connect between North Carolina and Tennessee.

Moving Forward

Drivers traveling between North Carolina and Tennessee or passing through the affected corridor are encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly. While this reopening is a critical step forward, patience and caution will remain essential as repairs continue.

Truck drivers using the westbound lanes of I-44/Turner Turnpike in Oklahoma will soon face reduced parking options. The Stroud service area at Exit 179 will temporarily halt truck parking until early 2026.

This closure is part of a modernization and reconstruction project led by the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. The initiative includes a complete overhaul of the Stroud service plaza, with updates to the McDonald’s and Love’s Travel Stop facilities. While parking will be unavailable during construction, food, fuel, and restroom amenities will still be accessible on site.

Once renovations are complete, the service area will provide more than 150 truck parking spaces—a significant increase of 50 spaces. This improvement was detailed in a report from The Oklahoman.

For now, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority advises truck drivers to plan ahead and secure alternative parking solutions for long-haul stops.

Meanwhile, a separate $38.5 million project will realign westbound lanes of the Turner Turnpike. Expected to finish in early 2026, this construction aligns with the other ongoing road updates in the area.

Lane Reductions and Restrictions on I-24 Bridge

Truck and passenger vehicles traveling across the I-24 bridge spanning the Ohio River—between Paducah, Kentucky, and Metropolis, Illinois—should prepare for significant lane reductions beginning Monday, March 3.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has confirmed that the bridge will be limited to a single lane in each direction to accommodate infrastructure upgrades. Planned improvements include a new deck overlay, expansion joint replacements, and structural steel repairs. Temporary concrete barriers will also be installed along the centerline.

Further restrictions come into play for heavy and oversized vehicles. The bridge will have a 15-ton weight limit and will remain closed to truck traffic altogether. Height and width limits will also apply, barring vehicles wider than 8 feet or taller than 9 feet, 6 inches.

Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate state routes to avoid congestion, particularly during rush hours.

According to IDOT, these lane restrictions will remain in effect until mid-October 2025. Additional updates regarding further traffic limitations are expected to follow. Completion of the $38 million bridge enhancement project is anticipated by 2027.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein announced on Monday that two lanes of Interstate 40, which have remained closed since Hurricane Helene caused severe damage last fall, will reopen by March 1.

The announcement coincided with a visit from U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to the impacted area. During a press conference, Duffy shared that the DOT and the U.S. Forest Service are collaborating to expedite the reconstruction process. This partnership includes acquiring a “Special Use” permit that will allow access to rock and other construction materials from Forest Service land and a nearby river.

This approach significantly shortens the supply chain, enabling the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to source construction materials from just 1 to 3 miles away rather than hauling them from distances ranging between 20 and 50 miles.

Reconstruction Efforts Underway

NCDOT shared key updates about the work that will occur over the next few weeks. Teams will focus on stabilizing the westbound lanes, installing speed limit signs restricting travel to 40 mph, adding a 9-inch curb to divide the two lanes, and completing safety inspections of the area.

One lane in each direction will be reopened between Exits 20 and 15, as well as from Exit 7 to the state border and five miles into Tennessee. These reopened stretches, however, will accommodate standard trucks only—oversized loads will remain restricted.

Bolstering the Economy and Reconnecting Routes

Governor Stein also applauded the efforts of NCDOT and its workers. “I’m proud of NCDOT’s focus on this challenge and the roadworkers who have worked tirelessly to reopen roads and keep people safe,” Stein said. “Reopening these lanes will help reconnect North Carolina and Tennessee and allow us to welcome back visitors to bolster the economy.”

Heads up, travelers! If you’re hitting I-95 in Rhode Island next weekend, prepare for some delays. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is closing lanes from September 20-23 for bridge replacement work.

Expect two southbound lanes near the Elmwood Avenue/Route 1 off-ramp (Exit 34) in Providence to be closed. Consider using Route 10 or I-295 as alternate routes, and plan for extra travel time.

The southbound lanes are the focus this time, but northbound lanes will face similar closures later this fall. About 130,000 vehicles use this busy stretch daily, so expect some congestion. Lanes close at 8 p.m. each Friday and reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. The high-speed northbound lane will also be closed during these times.

Starting September 11 and continuing through September 20, a lane split will happen on I-95 South at the bridge. Two lanes will run on either side of the work zone. Drivers should stay in their lanes and avoid sudden stops or lane changes.

Elmwood Avenue at the I-95 overpass will be completely closed. Detours will reroute drivers via Reservoir Avenue (Route 2) and Route 10. Local traffic can use Roger Williams Avenue. Traffic on Elmwood Avenue northbound or I-95 north to Exit 33B to Roger Williams Park won’t be affected. Those heading to the park via I-95 south or Elmwood Avenue southbound should follow the detour.

Key Dates to Remember:

September 16-20: Lane split continues on I-95 South at Exit 34, with all lanes remaining open.

September 20-23: Two right lanes on I-95 South and the left lane on I-95 North close at 8 p.m. Friday, September 20. Elmwood Avenue closes at the bridge again. All reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, September 23.

Navigating through construction zones can be a daunting task for anyone, but especially for truckers, as they face various challenges that can impact both safety and productivity. However, with the right knowledge and strategies, truck drivers can successfully maneuver through these construction zones while ensuring their safety and maintaining optimal productivity. In this blog post, we will provide practical tips for truckers who find themselves navigating challenging construction zones.

Plan Ahead and Stay Informed
To successfully navigate construction zones, truckers must prioritize planning and stay informed about road conditions. Before embarking on a journey, check for any construction updates or road closures using reputable resources such as traffic management websites or apps specifically designed for truckers. This will allow you to plan alternative routes and anticipate potential delays, ensuring a smoother and more efficient journey.

Follow Construction Zone Signage
Construction zones are typically marked with clear signage, including speed limits, lane closures, and detour instructions. It is crucial for truckers to pay close attention to these signs and strictly adhere to them. By following the designated routes and speed limits, you minimize the risk of accidents and fines while maintaining overall safety.

Maintain Safe Distances
Construction zones often involve the presence of heavy machinery and workers on foot. To ensure everyone’s safety, truckers should maintain safe distances from other vehicles, construction equipment, and workers. Increase your following distance and be prepared to brake or change lanes if necessary. Keeping a safe distance allows you to react promptly to sudden changes in traffic flow or any unexpected events.

Stay Alert and Reduce Distractions
In challenging construction zones, it is crucial for truckers to stay fully focused on the road. Minimize distractions by avoiding the use of mobile phones, adjusting electronic devices, or engaging in other activities that may divert your attention. By remaining alert, you can quickly respond to any potential hazards and make informed decisions.

Communicate and Coordinate
Communication is key when navigating construction zones. Maintain contact with your dispatcher, as well as fellow truckers to stay updated on any changes or important information. Additionally, be patient and cooperative with construction workers. Following their instructions and cooperating during lane merges or other maneuvers will contribute to smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety for everyone involved.

Navigating Detours Effectively
Construction zones often require detours that may deviate from the usual routes. When faced with a detour, it is important for truckers to navigate them effectively. Pay close attention to detour signs and follow the designated route provided. Take note of any specific restrictions or height/weight limitations that may affect your truck. Plan your detour route in advance to ensure it can accommodate your vehicle’s size and weight.

Additionally, use reliable navigation tools or GPS systems that are updated with real-time traffic information. These tools can help you find the most efficient detour routes and avoid potential roadblocks or congested areas. Stay patient and flexible during detours, as they may involve narrower roads or increased traffic. Pay special attention to bridges and overpasses as these are key areas where knowing the height and weight of your truck and load is crucial. Adapting your driving technique accordingly and maintaining a safe speed will help you navigate detours smoothly while prioritizing safety.

Truckers navigating challenging construction zones can ensure their safety and productivity by implementing essential advice and practical tips. Remember, prioritizing safety is paramount, and with the right mindset and preparation, truckers can confidently navigate these challenging areas and reach their destinations safely.
