If you’re planning to drive this holiday season, you’re definitely not alone. An estimated 107 million people will hit the road to visit family and friends during Christmas and New Year’s, making it one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

According to AAA, about 119.3 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between December 21 and January 1. This year’s travel numbers are just shy of the 2019 record, with only 64,000 more people expected to hit the road compared to that year. And if you thought last year was crowded, AAA predicts there will be an extra 3 million travelers this time around.

Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, explains, “This is the time of year when lifelong memories are made with loved ones, and travel plays a big role in that. This year, with Christmas Day falling on a Wednesday, we’re anticipating record-breaking travel numbers the weekend before and the weekend after the holiday.”

Why So Many People Are Driving

For the majority of travelers—around 107 million—hitting the road in their own vehicles is the preferred choice. That’s 2.5 million more drivers compared to last year. While it’s not quite as high as the record of 108 million drivers in 2019, it’s still a huge number.

One reason for this surge in car travel could be the drop in gas prices. Last year, the average price per gallon was around $3.12. This year, lower seasonal gas prices, thanks to colder weather, more people working remotely, and a jump in online shopping, make driving a bit more affordable and appealing.

Expect Heavy Traffic on Key Days

If you’re driving, prepare for delays, especially on the days leading up to Christmas and New Year’s. But don’t worry—the holidays themselves should see lighter traffic. Cities like Boston, New York City, Seattle, and Washington, DC are expected to experience significant congestion, with delays that could be double the usual. Nationwide, travel times might stretch up to 30% longer than normal.

As Bob Pishue, an analyst at INRIX, puts it, “With a near-record number of auto travelers expected this holiday season, drivers should expect delays in and around major metro areas, with Sunday, Dec. 22 expected to be the nation’s worst day to travel. Our advice is to avoid traveling during peak commuting hours during the week. If schedules allow, leave bright and early or after the evening commute.”

Tips for a Smoother Ride

As you get ready to hit the road, it’s smart to plan ahead. Keep an eye on traffic patterns, avoid the busiest times, and give yourself a little extra time to get where you need to go. Most importantly, stay safe out there, and enjoy making those lasting memories with your loved ones this holiday season.

Labor Day weekend is just around the corner, and many travelers are gearing up for a well-deserved road trip. As experienced truckers who spend countless hours on the highways, we understand the challenges and joys of long-distance travel better than most. Whether you’re hitting the road in a compact car or an RV, our road-tested advice can help you navigate the holiday traffic and make your journey smooth and memorable. In this blog post, we’re sharing our top tips for a successful Labor Day road trip from a trucker’s perspective.

Plan Ahead for Traffic Congestion

Expect heavy traffic during the Labor Day weekend, as many others will be hitting the road too. Plan your departure time strategically to avoid peak travel times.

Why? By leaving early in the morning or late at night, you can bypass the worst of the congestion and enjoy a smoother ride.

Check Your Vehicle Thoroughly

Before embarking on your journey, inspect your vehicle’s tires, brakes, lights, and fluids. Ensure everything is in proper working condition to minimize the risk of breakdowns or potential safety hazards.

Why? A well-maintained vehicle reduces the chances of unexpected delays on the road, making your trip safer and more stress-free.

Pack Smart and Light

Pack only what you truly need to avoid clutter and unnecessary weight. Try to distribute the load evenly to maintain your vehicle’s balance and fuel efficiency.

Why? A well-organized and balanced load improves handling, stability, and overall safety during your road trip.

Have a Flexible Itinerary

While having a general plan is essential, allow room for flexibility. Unexpected road closures, detours, or interesting attractions along the way might tempt you to deviate from your original route.

Why? A flexible itinerary reduces stress and allows you to embrace the spontaneity of the journey.

Stay Hydrated and Well-Rested

Long hours on the road can be physically demanding. Stay hydrated by having plenty of water on hand and take regular breaks to rest and stretch your legs.

Why? Staying hydrated and well-rested keeps you alert and focused, promoting safer driving conditions.

Fuel Up Wisely

Keep an eye on gas prices along your route and refuel at stations that offer competitive prices. Use mobile apps to locate the best deals.

Why? Saving on fuel costs can significantly impact your overall travel expenses, leaving you with more funds for enjoyable activities.

Embrace Technology

Utilize navigation apps to avoid traffic jams and find alternative routes. Download entertainment options such as podcasts, audiobooks, or music playlists to keep you engaged during the drive.

Why? Technology enhances your driving experience by providing real-time information and entertainment.

Pack Snacks and Meals

Pack a variety of snacks and light meals to avoid the need for frequent stops. Healthy options like nuts, fruits, and granola bars can keep your energy levels up.

Why? Having your own snacks on hand saves time and money, and ensures you have something readily available to satisfy hunger pangs.

As you gear up for your Labor Day road trip, remember that a little preparation and smart decision-making can go a long way in ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable journey. By following these road-tested tips from experienced truckers, you’ll be better equipped to tackle the holiday traffic, unexpected challenges, and make the most out of your long weekend adventure. Safe travels and happy Labor Day!
