What Makes Someone Eligible for the IDEA Award?

This award celebrates drivers who elevate the standards of the commercial driving industry, going far beyond the basic expectations of their role.
No safety-related driving suspensions within the past three years.

It’s important to note: This award is open to all commercial motor vehicle industry members, regardless of their membership status with CVSA.

What Does the IDEA Winner Receive?

The IDEA recipient in 2025 will be honored as part of the CVSA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Denver, Colorado. The prize package includes the following:

A $5,000 award.

A stunning crystal trophy.

A complimentary economy flight to Denver International Airport for the winner and one guest.

The winner’s achievements will be spotlighted at the conference’s awards ceremony on September 24.

The Transportation Security Council of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently honored two standout fleets for their exceptional efforts in advancing security within the trucking industry.

“Trucking is an industry of frontline responders who make it a priority to keep the public and our customers safe,” said Chris Spear, ATA president and CEO. “Having a strong commitment to security—whether it’s preventing theft, crime, or terrorism—is an important responsibility for our industry, and these carriers have shown tremendous dedication to it.”

The awards were presented during the ATA’s 2025 Safety, Security & Human Resources National Conference & Exhibition in Louisville, Kentucky.

2025 Award Recipients

ATA Excellence in Security: ABF Freight

ATA Excellence in Claims & Loss Prevention: Old Dominion Freight Line

“Recognizing these fleets is about more than awards—it’s about highlighting a deep commitment to protecting people, freight, and the integrity of our operations,” said Jacob Pierce, TSC executive director. “Their leadership in security, claims, and loss prevention reflects the kind of forward-thinking, principled approach our industry needs more of.”

These recognitions highlight the vital role of security in the trucking sector and encourage adopting industry-leading best practices to protect goods and ensure public safety.

Saia Inc. recently revealed the remarkable achievements of its drivers, dockworkers, mechanics, and other staff for their impressive safety records in 2023. This initiative resulted in distributing over 6,800 accolades to individuals who reached critical safety milestones or career achievements.

The company emphasized that its safety award program is designed to celebrate employees for their years or miles of accident-free driving and injury-free performance. Saia’s commitment to safety is unwavering, and the awards symbolize its core principles of “Safety,” “Do the Right Thing,” and “Taking Care of Each Other.”

“We were honored to recognize over 4,800 drivers with a safety award. In addition, nearly 2,000 awards were presented to our tremendous dock personnel and mechanics,” remarked Vice President of Safety Steve Greenhill. “It goes without saying that working for an entire year without an accident or injury is an incredible achievement and it is evident that every employee at the company continues to be invested in our core values, most especially safety.”

In addition to receiving special pins and certificates, many employees were gifted custom jackets, rings, or watches. This year, 54 drivers who achieved 3 million miles or 24 years of accident-free driving received a custom gold watch. For every additional 500,000 miles—or four years—of accident-free driving, diamonds are added to the watch. Forty drivers received diamonds this year.

Five drivers celebrated the addition of a third diamond to their watches, recognizing their outstanding achievements:

Knoxville, Tennessee City Driver David Davidson

New Orleans, Louisiana City Driver Kevin Gilbert

Baton Rouge, Louisiana Line Driver Evertt Kimble

Houston, Texas Line Driver Stafford Moses

Shreveport, Louisiana Line Driver James Green

Dallas, Texas Line Driver Jack Ikey celebrated an exceptional milestone by receiving his fourth diamond, marking 40 years of safe driving at Saia.

Drivers reaching 1 million miles, or eight years, of accident-free driving were awarded a custom, personalized gold ring. Additional diamonds are added to the ring for each further 500,000 miles or four years of safe driving. This year, 172 drivers earned their million-mile rings, while 40 others added a diamond.

For a second consecutive year, Saia extended its recognition to mechanics and dock teams, awarding custom backpacks to 110 personnel for five years of injury-free service. Additionally, 56 individuals received watches for maintaining a decade of injury-free work.

Among these achievements, 67 dockworkers and mechanics reached 25 or more years of safe service. Notably, Houma, Louisiana dockworker Harold Castell, Jr., and Phoenix, Arizona dockworker Kenneth Ball have safely served Saia for over 40 years.

Schneider National, a multi-modal transportation and logistics company, has been honored with the National Safety Council’s (NSC) Green Cross for Safety Advocate Award for its pioneering efforts in implementing technology to combat impaired driving.

By receiving the Green Cross for Safety distinction, Schneider becomes the first and only company to achieve all three safety awards from the NSC. The company had previously secured the Green Cross for Safety Innovation Award in 2019 and the Green Cross for Safety Excellence Award in 2018.

The NSC’s Green Cross for Safety Awards recognizes outstanding contributions to advancing safety in workplaces, on roads, and in homes and communities.

“Receiving the safety advocate award is a huge honor,” said Tom DiSalvi, Schneider vice president of safety and training. “At Schneider, our number one core value is ‘Safety First and Always’; it’s this enterprise value that leads us to continue to innovate with both technology and processes to improve highway safety.”

The Safety Advocate Award specifically acknowledges a community partnership, program, individual, or coalition that has significantly impacted safety issues by advocating for proven or promising practices, raising awareness, or influencing policy changes to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Schneider’s noteworthy achievement stems from its status as the first in its industry to conduct a trial deployment of the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) Program’s groundbreaking technology. The DADSS program focuses on researching and developing an innovative alcohol detection technology tailored for commercial motor vehicles.

In their pursuit of real-life testing, the program organizers sought a contributor capable of delivering consistent, reliable data from frequent drivers operating vehicles in various temperatures and under regular and irregular intervals. Schneider National stepped up to the challenge, earning recognition for its commitment to safety innovation.

“We are constantly looking for ways to improve the safety of our drivers and the motoring public,” DiSalvi said. “As the first truck carrier to test the alcohol detection sensors alongside DADSS, we are contributing impactful data that will be used to create a technology that could help eliminate the country’s number one traffic safety problem and save lives.”
