Schneider National Inc. has once again demonstrated its steadfast commitment to honoring veterans by participating in the Wreaths Across America (WAA) initiative for the 16th consecutive year. This year, four Schneider drivers joined the WAA Honor Fleet, delivering wreaths to national cemeteries across the United States—a moving tribute to our nation’s fallen heroes.

A Meaningful Mission for Military Veterans

For Schneider associates with military backgrounds, taking part in Wreaths Across America carries profound significance. Among this year’s participants is Patrice Cook, a U.S. Army veteran and one of Schneider’s esteemed Ride of Pride drivers. Cook had the honor of joining the prestigious Escort to Arlington, a convoy that began its east coast route on December 7 and concluded at Arlington National Cemetery on December 14 for Wreaths Across America Day.

“Each year, participating in this event is a profound honor,” Cook said. “Bringing wreaths to national cemeteries to honor those who have sacrificed their lives is deeply moving. Being part of the Escort to Arlington and witnessing the support and patriotism of onlookers along the route is incredibly heartwarming. At each stop, we meet people who share their stories and express their gratitude. It’s a reminder of the impact and importance of our mission, and it fills me with pride and humility to be part of such a meaningful tradition.”

A Responsibility to Give Back

Schneider has embedded the values of community responsibility and service in its operations. With 13% of its associates having military experience, the company provides meaningful opportunities for employees to give back. Since 2008, Schneider drivers have participated in WAA by delivering wreaths that commemorate the sacrifices of fallen service members. The company promotes active involvement in communities where its associates live and work, reflecting its core value of operating responsibly.

This year, the WAA theme, “Live with Purpose,” has resonated strongly with Schneider’s associates, who shared how this message inspires their work.

What “Live with Purpose” Means to Schneider Drivers

Patrice Cook stated, “‘Live with Purpose’ means making a positive impact on our future. As a Ride of Pride driver, I support my fellow veterans by attending events at care homes, hospitals, and other locations that offer support.”

Similarly, Jeff Waggoner, a U.S. Army veteran and Ride of Pride driver since 2022, noted, “To me, ‘Live with Purpose’ is about doing what you enjoy and finding fulfillment. Driving the Ride of Pride truck honors those who have served, and it’s rewarding to help other veterans. WAA isn’t just for veterans or drivers; anyone can contribute by volunteering, setting out wreaths, or donating.”

Bobby Brown, a U.S. Army veteran and Schneider employee for over 33 years, shared, “When I hear ‘Live with Purpose,’ I think of ‘Drive with Purpose’—what I do every day at Schneider. This route is especially important to me, having served in the Army and with many family members in the military. If there’s one load to do in a year, it’s this one.”

Doug Huber, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Schneider Van Truckload driver, added, “Remembrance is so important to honor fallen or missing veterans and also for all those who are currently serving in our military. I am proud to be part of WAA to do that. Additionally, ‘Live with Purpose’ means to me to reach out to those with a frown and brighten their day somehow, each and every day.”

Honoring and Remembering Through Action

Wreaths Across America began over 30 years ago and has grown into a year-long initiative focused on remembrance, honor, and teaching the values of freedom and sacrifice. Schneider has played an integral role in advancing this mission, consistently showcasing its dedication to operating responsibly and honoring those who served our country.

Schneider National Inc. has achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing six million zero-emission miles with its cutting-edge Freightliner eCascadia fleet. This accomplishment reflects the company’s steadfast mission to combat carbon emissions while advancing eco-friendly logistics solutions.

Leading the Way to a Sustainable Future

Based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Schneider has secured its position as an environmental pioneer, becoming the first major transportation company to achieve six million zero-emission miles. This milestone highlights Schneider’s dedication to sustainability, innovation, and industry leadership.

“Reaching six million zero-emission miles is a testament to our steadfast dedication to sustainability and innovation,” stated Mark Rourke, Schneider’s president and CEO. “Leading the way in adopting electric vehicle technology not only benefits the environment but also serves as an example of the broad service capabilities and flexibility we can offer to customers.”

This accomplishment has prevented over 20 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the environment—the equivalent of removing approximately 2,100 gas-powered vehicles from the road for an entire year.

A Record-Setting BEV Fleet

Today, Schneider operates one of the largest battery-electric vehicle (BEV) fleets in North America, with around 100 Freightliner eCascadias supplied by Daimler Truck North America (DTNA). Charging infrastructure at Schneider’s Southern California Operations Center includes 16 dual-corded 350 kW chargers, capable of simultaneously powering up to 32 trucks.

“Schneider is a great example of the kind of forward-thinking entrepreneurship our industry needs,” said David Carson, senior vice president, sales and marketing at DTNA. “They’ve achieved over 6 million zero emission miles, which is a reminder for us all to keep working on overcoming challenges together on the path to zero emissions. At DTNA, we’re committed to the shift to zero emissions, alongside pioneers like Schneider, who are showing us what’s possible.”

Supporting Businesses in Sustainability Goals

Schneider’s electric fleet enables customers to meet their sustainability objectives. This was evident in 2023 when Schneider became the first carrier to complete global zero-emission shipments for PepsiCo. During this partnership, over 31,000 zero-emission miles were logged within months.

“PepsiCo is proud to celebrate this milestone driven by Schneider in California,” said David Allen, VP and chief sustainability officer at PepsiCo Foods North America. “Together, we’ve demonstrated how cross-industry partnerships can reduce emissions and create a healthier, cleaner environment.”

Enhancing Driver Experience

Schneider’s drivers have also embraced the advantages of electric vehicles. Thanks to quieter operation and smoother performance, BEVs are transforming the day-to-day lives of long-haul drivers.

“Once you drive an electric truck, you won’t want to go back to a diesel truck. The ride quality and the quietness make a huge difference in our daily operations,” shared Marty Boots, a seasoned Schneider driver.

Improving Air Quality for Southern California

Schneider’s BEV operations are centered in Southern California—a region with critical air quality challenges. This aligns with sustainability objectives set by initiatives like the California Air Resources Board and the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative (JETSI). Funding from JETSI, the U.S. EPA, and the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust has played a role in expanding Schneider’s electric fleet.

“Achieving six million zero emission miles is more than a milestone — it’s a clear demonstration of how innovation in transportation can lead to cleaner, healthier air for our communities,” said Wayne Nastri, South Coast AQMD’s executive officer. “By embracing battery electric vehicles, Schneider is setting a great example for the industry while directly contributing to improved air quality and public health in regions like Southern California.”

Expanding Beyond Electric

Schneider isn’t stopping with BEVs. The company is actively exploring other eco-friendly alternatives like renewable natural gas and hydrogen-powered engines. Their current fleet of non-electric tractors runs entirely on biodiesel blends, underscoring their comprehensive commitment to a greener transportation future. Schneider has also set ambitious goals, striving to reduce its CO2 emissions per mile by 60% by 2035.

Redefining Sustainable Logistics

The achievement of six million zero-emission miles underscores Schneider’s leadership role in sustainable logistics. This milestone fosters benefits across the board—from reducing environmental impact to enhancing driver satisfaction and empowering clients to meet their green goals.

Schneider National recently revealed an upgraded platform to boost freight access for drivers and operators, as detailed in a recent company press release.

Known officially as Schneider National, Inc., this leading multimodal transportation and logistics provider is transforming its interaction with owner-operators through the innovative Schneider FreightPower® platform. This revamped platform significantly expands owner-operators’ reach to Schneider’s diverse freight options, while offering intuitive functionality and advanced search capabilities to optimize business operations, according to the release.

Benefits for owner-operators utilizing Schneider’s platform include:

Expanded Freight Access: Owner-operators now enjoy broader access to Schneider’s comprehensive freight offerings, covering both traditional loads and other freight services managed by Schneider.

Advanced Features: The platform is accessible across devices—mobile, desktop, and tablet—offering enhanced functionality, detailed load insights, favorite searches, and reload options for more strategic planning and reduced empty hauls.

High Drop-and-Hook Rate: Over 95% of available freight opportunities on the platform are drop-and-hook shipments, significantly boosting efficiency and productivity for owner-operators.

Improved Trip Planning: Load postings now include road miles, a user-friendly update that aids in more precise trip planning for owner-operators.

“Collaborating with owner-operators is an important component in the success of our business and the reliable service we can provide customers, which is why the network has grown tremendously in the last 25 years,” stated Schneider Senior Vice President and General Manager of Truckload and Mexico, John Bozec. “We want to invest in tools that support owner-operators in running and growing their businesses. With Schneider FreightPower, they gain access to better load management, increasing their productivity and revenue potential.”

Schneider’s statement also noted that the FreightPower enhancements were tested with a select group of owner-operators already using the platform. This strategy allowed Schneider to gather crucial feedback, ensuring the platform’s functionality and user-friendliness, ultimately saving time and streamlining success for owner-operators.
