Schneider recently celebrated the safety accomplishments of 220 drivers, reaffirming its commitment to safety excellence and its drivers’ dedication to accident-free operations.

On June 12, 30 exceptional drivers were inducted into Schneider’s prestigious Haul of Fame. This honor recognizes drivers who achieve either 3 million safe driving miles or maintain 20 consecutive years without an accident.

Schneider’s Safety Legacy

Covering over 9 million freight miles daily, Schneider drivers ensure essential goods are delivered nationwide while maintaining rigorous safety standards. Thanks to their efforts, Schneider has significantly reduced U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)-reportable accidents, achieving a record low accident frequency in 2024.

Recognizing Excellence in Safe Driving

This year, Schneider acknowledged the remarkable contributions of its drivers who prioritize safety on the road:

98 drivers received the Consecutive Safe Driving Award for maintaining 10 or more consecutive years without a preventable accident or major lost-time injury.

92 drivers earned the Million Mile Award for completing at least 1 million accident-free miles.

Five drivers reached an extraordinary milestone of 4 million accident-free miles.

Greg Swift made history as only the third Schneider driver to achieve 5 million safe miles.

30 drivers entered the Haul of Fame, a recognition for achieving 3 million safe driving miles or two decades of accident-free driving.

“These achievements represent more than just milestones,” said Schneider President and CEO Mark Rourke. “They highlight the strong commitment of Schneider drivers who continually set the standard for safety in our industry. Their professionalism and focus on safe operations, every mile and every day for decades, are what truly set them apart.”

Schneider’s drivers not only move freight but also raise the bar for safety in the industry. Their dedication inspires excellence, contributing to a safer and more reliable transportation network.

Greg Swift, an experienced driver for Schneider National Inc., has achieved a phenomenal milestone in his career—safely completing 5 million miles without a preventable accident.

A Rare Feat

Although over 6,500 drivers at Schneider have achieved the milestone of driving 1 million miles, only a handful have reached the remarkable 5 million mark. Swift stands as the third driver in the nearly 90-year history of the company to become part of this exclusive group. On August 13, he was honored at Schneider’s headquarters in Green Bay, Wisconsin, as he celebrated this significant achievement, receiving a $10,000 bonus in recognition of his steadfast dedication to safety and professionalism. To illustrate the enormity of this accomplishment, driving 5 million miles equates to a journey to the moon and back ten times without a single preventable accident.

In expressing his thoughts on this landmark moment, Swift stated, “Reaching 5 million miles seemed unimaginable. It’s an immense honor to be recognized and to be part of a company that equips us to succeed. Safety is the key to long-term success.”

A Commitment to Safety

Schneider has highlighted Swift’s journey, emphasizing that he epitomizes the company’s core value: Safety First and Always. Mark Rourke, the president and CEO of Schneider, noted, “We are in the service business, and professional drivers like Greg are the foundation of our success. Drivers who dedicate their careers to safety, who put their customers first, and for whom excellence is non-negotiable, leave a legacy for others to follow. Greg is one of those drivers, and I’m grateful he’s been an integral part of our team for so long.”

The Journey of a Lifelong Driver

Swift’s professional journey reflects the dramatic changes in the trucking industry, transitioning from traditional paper maps to cutting-edge GPS and collision avoidance technologies. Nevertheless, Schneider’s unwavering focus on driver safety with state-of-the-art equipment and technology has consistently been a priority.

Reflecting on the broader impacts of his achievement, Swift remarked, “I think the 5 million miles has done more than just boost my career. It’s taken my home life, financial life and overall well-being to new levels. With a great career and the miles I’ve driven, great things have come along with it.”

Among the many memories Swift cherishes from his travels, meeting his wife Erica, who also works at Schneider, stands out prominently. Erica Swift commented, “If Greg could go back in time, he would absolutely choose a career in trucking over and over again. Schneider has provided us both with an immense amount of opportunities and memorable experiences. I am beyond proud of Greg as the third-ever driver to reach 5 million safe miles.”

Advice for New Drivers

For those new to the industry, Swift shares practical yet powerful advice: Plan ahead and manage your time efficiently.

This year, Schneider National Inc. recognized nearly 200 drivers for their outstanding safety achievements through its annual recognition program.

Schneider’s annual recognition program is dedicated to honoring drivers who have reached remarkable safety-related career milestones. This includes the Million Mile Driver Awards, Consecutive Safe Driving Awards, and induction into the esteemed company’s Haul of Fame.

“These responsible professionals exemplify safety excellence, serving thousands of customers across millions of miles without a single preventable accident,” Schneider said.

The Million Mile Driver Award is given to Schneider drivers who have safely transported freight over 1 million miles without any accidents. These safe miles are accumulated annually, reflecting shipment miles driven without any preventable incidents. In the year 2023 alone, 92 drivers either attained this honor for the first time or reached new milestones, with five drivers achieving the feat of 4 million safe driving miles.

This year’s standout achievement features five drivers who have collectively traveled more than 800 times around the globe, solidifying their place in an exclusive group of only a dozen others in the company’s history who have reached this significant milestone.

Additionally, 82 drivers have been recognized with Schneider’s Consecutive Safe Driving Award for their commitment to accident-free driving over milestone years. This award acknowledges drivers who have achieved a minimum of 10 consecutive years without a preventable accident.

Furthermore, drivers who have amassed 3 million safe driving miles or maintained 20 consecutive years of accident-free driving are honored with the prestigious distinction of being added to Schneider’s Haul of Fame. The names of these drivers are engraved on plaques displayed on the Haul of Fame wall at Schneider’s corporate headquarters in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This year, 32 drivers met the criteria for the first time or had their plaques updated to reflect elevated award levels.

“Whether they’re first-time award recipients or seasoned safe driving award winners, we appreciate each driver’s dedication to our values,” said Mark Rourke, president and CEO of Schneider. “In particular, we commend Jon Shackleford, Michael Barnette, Daniel Dailey, Curt Fields and Wayne Lovinella, who each achieved an astounding 4 million safe driving miles. Drivers serve as ambassadors of both Schneider and the customers we represent, and these superstars represent excellence in action.”

Schneider National, a multi-modal transportation and logistics company, has been honored with the National Safety Council’s (NSC) Green Cross for Safety Advocate Award for its pioneering efforts in implementing technology to combat impaired driving.

By receiving the Green Cross for Safety distinction, Schneider becomes the first and only company to achieve all three safety awards from the NSC. The company had previously secured the Green Cross for Safety Innovation Award in 2019 and the Green Cross for Safety Excellence Award in 2018.

The NSC’s Green Cross for Safety Awards recognizes outstanding contributions to advancing safety in workplaces, on roads, and in homes and communities.

“Receiving the safety advocate award is a huge honor,” said Tom DiSalvi, Schneider vice president of safety and training. “At Schneider, our number one core value is ‘Safety First and Always’; it’s this enterprise value that leads us to continue to innovate with both technology and processes to improve highway safety.”

The Safety Advocate Award specifically acknowledges a community partnership, program, individual, or coalition that has significantly impacted safety issues by advocating for proven or promising practices, raising awareness, or influencing policy changes to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Schneider’s noteworthy achievement stems from its status as the first in its industry to conduct a trial deployment of the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) Program’s groundbreaking technology. The DADSS program focuses on researching and developing an innovative alcohol detection technology tailored for commercial motor vehicles.

In their pursuit of real-life testing, the program organizers sought a contributor capable of delivering consistent, reliable data from frequent drivers operating vehicles in various temperatures and under regular and irregular intervals. Schneider National stepped up to the challenge, earning recognition for its commitment to safety innovation.

“We are constantly looking for ways to improve the safety of our drivers and the motoring public,” DiSalvi said. “As the first truck carrier to test the alcohol detection sensors alongside DADSS, we are contributing impactful data that will be used to create a technology that could help eliminate the country’s number one traffic safety problem and save lives.”

Eleven drivers from Schneider National’s Advantage Club were treated to an unforgettable NASCAR experience at the Drive for the Cure 250 in Charlotte, N.C. The highlight of their trip was meeting and watching Sammy Smith in action, driving the #18 Pilot Flying J car proudly displaying the Schneider logo. The drivers got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the race day operations from the pit area alongside the Pilot Flying J crew.

Smith himself joined the Schneider team for a fun BBQ at their Charlotte Operating Center, where they received NASCAR-themed gifts and tickets to the upcoming race. As an extra special treat, members of Schneider’s maintenance team got to explore the Joe Gibbs race shop.

“We are appreciative to NASCAR and Pilot Flying J for including Schneider in a memorable week and creating an opportunity to thank our drivers for their hard work and commitment to safety,” said Rob Reich, Schneider’s executive vice president and chief administrative officer.

Schneider’s Advantage Club celebrates the accomplishments of drivers who have been with the company for a minimum of three years and have demonstrated a clean safety and performance record. The goal of the group is to honor these drivers and thank them for doing one of the most demanding jobs in the organization.

Schneider National Inc. has completed an electric charging depot at its South El Monte Intermodal Operations Center in Southern California. This depot will power its battery electric truck (BET) fleet, which aims to include nearly 100 Freightliner eCascadias by year’s end, generating one of North America’s largest zero-emission fleets.

This charging site is over half the size of a football field, with 16 350 kW dual-corded dispensers that can charge 32 trucks simultaneously. The eCascadias will be able to achieve an 80% charge within 90 minutes.

This investment in sustainable technology is a huge step forward for Schneider National and its environmental goals.

“Schneider decided to lead the way by building our own depot in South El Monte,” said Schneider President and CEO Mark Rourke. “It was important to develop onsite charging because it is the most efficient solution to power our growing electric fleet. With the infrastructure deficiency, we found that we needed to collaborate with a wide array of experts to see our vision come to fruition.”

Schneider’s conveniently located facility is in the heart of metro Los Angeles – with easy access to major highways and a dense concentration of customers within 50 miles. This year, Schneider is proud to have started hauling deliveries for Frito-Lay North America and Goodyear with their new eCascadia fleet. These zero-emission trucks have an impressive range of 220 miles, supporting the companies’ supply chain sustainability goals.

Schneider’s South El Monte site was funded through the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative (JETSI), a state and local project aimed at increasing the number of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks on the road. Working alongside other environmentally focused companies, including Black & Veatch, Schneider has designed an operationally efficient layout to ensure seamless transport logistics and a positive impact on the environment.

“This 4,900-square-foot state-of-the-art electric truck charging hub is a monumental testament to innovation and collaboration,” said Dave Hallowell, Black & Veatch president of the connectivity, commercial, and industrial sector. “The collaboration between Schneider and all the project partners will result in new employment opportunities for the area, along with a significant reduction in pollution.”

“We know the future of sustainable transportation includes electric. That is why we invested and collaborated with stakeholders along the supply chain to work together to create this infrastructure and ultimately lower carbon emissions. This would not be possible without our funding and grant agencies,” said Rourke.

Schneider collaborated with Daimler Truck North America to help improve the eCascadia truck, by piloting it for six months in 2019-2020 through Freightliner’s Customer Experience fleet. Based on the feedback received, the company introduced the BET that is currently being used in their fleet.

Schneider has already received a third of the anticipated 92 BETs and upon completion, they have the potential to eliminate over 81,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each day, equivalent to removing around 2,400 gas-powered vehicles off the road. These zero-emission trucks will significantly contribute towards Schneider’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 7.5% per mile by 2025 and a 60% per mile reduction by 2035.
