The new “What Is PC-12?” knowledge hub breaks down what’s coming, why it matters, and how drivers and shop owners can get ready before the new oil category hits the market.

“API PC-12 will be an important change for diesel engines that operate in trucks,” said Julie Wright, Shell Rotella North American brand manager. Shell Rotella wants to help ensure fleets, owner-operators, technicians, and consumers have an easy-to-understand resource that explains what’s changing, why it matters, and how to prepare for the new engine oils. We aim to support the industry through this transition, just as we’ve done with previous category changes.”

What truckers need to know about PC-12

If you’ve been around long enough to remember the switch to CK-4 and FA-4 oils, this is the next evolution in that process. PC-12 (Proposed Category 12) is the American Petroleum Institute’s upcoming oil standard for heavy-duty diesel engines.

It’s being developed to meet tougher emissions rules, higher engine efficiency needs, and stricter durability standards for the next generation of trucks hitting the road in the next few years.

The API expects PC-12 to be officially licensed by January 2027, meaning the oil you’re using today will eventually be replaced by new blends built to handle hotter-running, cleaner-burning diesel engines.

The 44th annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs truck show and beauty contest will roll into Bristol Motor Speedway in Northeast Tennessee from June 25 through June 27, 2026. The track, known to many drivers as “The Last Great Colosseum,” hosted the Large Cars and Guitars show earlier this year and is gearing up to welcome some of the sharpest working trucks in North America.

SuperRigs is not just about polished paint and chrome. Organizers say the event is built to honor the dedication and pride that drivers put into their rigs and their careers. Each year, the show draws owner operators and fleet drivers from across the United States and Canada who want to show off their equipment, meet other drivers, and enjoy a weekend that celebrates the industry.

For 2026, drivers and spectators can expect:

• More than 25 thousand dollars in cash and prizes spread across more than 20 judging categories, including Best Chrome, Best Lights, and Best of Show
• Twelve drivers will be selected to appear in the 2027 Shell Rotella SuperRigs Calendar
• Family-friendly attractions, interactive exhibits, and weekend entertainment designed around trucking culture

The Bristol event will be the third year in a row that SuperRigs lands at a NASCAR track. Texas Motor Speedway hosted the show in 2024, and Atlanta Motor Speedway was home to the 2025 contest.

Earlier this year at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS), Shell Rotella invited attendees to record messages of gratitude in its “Thank-a-Trucker” studio. For each message shared, both Shell Rotella and Love’s pledged $20 to SCF — an organization dedicated to helping truckers facing unexpected financial or medical challenges.

In total, 72 heartfelt recordings were made, adding up to a combined $2,880 donation to SCF. Shell emphasized the power of turning appreciation into action: “Seventy-two voices of gratitude echoed through MATS, each one a heartfelt ‘thank you’ that turned words into action. In total, these messages generated a $2,880 donation made in honor of the hardworking people who keep the country moving.”

The donation is being presented this week during NTDAW, along with a virtual check presentation video rolling out on social media. The video will feature thank-you messages from Shell Rotella and Love’s representatives, paired with the unveiling of the donation check, creating a shareable way to recognize truck drivers nationwide.

Julie Wright, North American brand manager for Shell Rotella, underscored the importance of the effort: “Truckers are the unsung heroes of the highway, and their sacrifices and commitment deserve our deepest gratitude. Shell Starship 3.0 Driving Change in IndyCar

Building on the collaboration between Shell and IndyCar, the Shell Starship 3.0 will serve as the official transporter for the Pennzoil Tech Inspection trailer throughout the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series. “The truck’s not going to be on the track, but it’s going to do the job from track to track,” said Mueller.

Powered by the Cummins X15N natural gas engine and Shell Rotella natural gas engine oil, Starship 3.0 is the first natural gas-powered Class 8 truck in North America’s motorsports fleets. Its innovative features include a lightweight, aerodynamic carbon fiber body, a camera-based mirror system, and an optimized lightweight chassis.

Since 2023, Shell has also supplied 100% renewable racing fuel to the IndyCar series, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability within motorsports.

Validating Energy-Efficient Trucking

Mike Roeth, Executive Director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, called the Starship 3.0 “probably the most efficient, best natural gas, Class 8 truck in America.” The truck achieved fuel efficiency of approximately 9 mpg Diesel Gallon Equivalent (DGE) with a range of 890 miles during West Coast runs with renewable natural gas.

“Proving runs like this are vital to growing natural gas infrastructure,” added Mueller.

AI-Powered Sustainability Insights

To further its sustainability goals, Shell is rolling out an AI-driven emissions management platform developed with NTT Data. The tool provides real-time tracking and analysis of race operations and logistics emissions.

Kunal Koul of NTT underscored the platform’s potential, explaining how it shifts from using estimated data to real, actionable insights. “This system not only enables emissions tracking but also equips teams to make more data-driven decisions through intuitive dashboards and reports,” he said.

A United Drive Toward Sustainability

J. Douglas Boles, President of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, emphasized that sustainability initiatives shouldn’t compromise racing performance. By integrating cutting-edge technologies like Starship 3.0, Boles sees an opportunity to pair environmental responsibility with innovation.

Josef Newgarden, Team Penske driver and two-time IndyCar champion added, “In racing, you’re always pushing the limits of speed. We’re trying to put things on the absolute edge, but we’re trying to do it as efficiently as possible.”

The MATS Pro Talks Education Series is back, offering a packed schedule of sessions designed to help drivers and trucking professionals stay ahead in the industry. From business strategies to industry insights, these sessions provide valuable knowledge for anyone looking to sharpen their skills.

For those who love custom trucks, the PKY Truck Beauty Championship will showcase some of the most impressive rigs on the road. Competing trucks will be on display in Lot N, giving attendees a chance to see some of the best builds in the business up close. The MATS Big Rig Build-Off also returns, featuring five custom truck builders going head-to-head.

Drivers bringing their rigs to MATS can take advantage of the Truck Parking Community at 1032 Phillips Lane, right across from the main entrance. A free shuttle runs between the lot and the Expo Center during show hours. The lot isn’t just for parking—it’s a gathering spot with free coffee and espresso from Mudflap on Thursday and Friday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Before Friday night’s concert with Colt Ford and Tony Justice, Fistful of Tacos will be serving free tacos and nachos to the first 400 guests from 5:30-7 p.m.

Many exhibitors will also have special events, giveaways, and new products on display. Shell Rotella’s booth will feature an interactive experience with trucking personalities like the Boston Trucker, Clarissa Rankin, and Tarik Al-Amin II. As outlined in a SuperRigs news release, participating trucks will be evaluated based on their exterior appearance, design, detail/finish, originality, and workmanship.

“Hosting the 42nd annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs competition in the heart of Texas at Texas Motor Speedway will be as big as the spirit of the truckers we celebrate,” said Julie Wright, Shell Rotella brand manager. “This event not only showcases the beauty and power of these incredible machines but also honors the hardworking men and women who operate them.”
