Western Star Trucks is expanding its Star Nation Experience for 2026, adding a head-to-head operator competition, increasing dealer involvement, and continuing its focus on showcasing the skill behind professional driving as part of a broader push to strengthen driver recruitment.

The fourth annual event is scheduled for June 5 through June 8 in Bend, Oregon, where selected participants will take part in an all-expenses-paid program built around hands-on challenges and team-based competition.

Operator Competition Shifts Toward Precision and Execution

The 2026 event introduces a head-to-head operator showdown designed to highlight precision, control, and decision-making in real working conditions.

Participants will move through off-road scenarios and technical challenges that reflect the demands drivers face on the job, putting a clear focus on execution rather than presentation.

“The people and the equipment working together are what make this industry great,” said Alex Martin-Banzer. “Star Nation celebrates the operators who take pride in their work, push their trucks further than anyone else, and show what trucking is really about — keeping the world moving.”

Experienced Drivers Lead Team-Based Challenges

Two returning participants will serve as team captains for the 2026 event.

Ronald Byrd, a Texas-based operator with 18 years in oilfield operations and a 2025 participant, will lead one team. Jarett Dorman, based in British Columbia with nearly two decades in crane operations and a 2023 participant, will lead the second.

Both will mentor participants through hands-on challenges designed to reflect real operating conditions.

Program Expansion Extends Beyond the Competition

Western Star is continuing its partnership with American Truck Simulator to connect with younger audiences and introduce them to trucking.

Dealer participation is also expanding for 2026, with two dealers attending alongside selected customers, reinforcing the role dealers play in helping drivers spec and maintain equipment.

Applications for the 2026 Star Nation Experience are open through May 1, with selected participants to be notified by May 8. The program is open to CDL Class A holders and members of the American Truck Simulator community in the United States and Canada who are at least 21 years old.

To enter, visit Western Star’s official Star Nation page here.

The expanded format reflects a broader effort to highlight the level of skill required behind the wheel while strengthening connections across the trucking industry.

The Truck Drivers USA editorial team creates practical, driver-focused content covering industry topics, job trends, and real-world decisions that impact drivers at every stage of their careers. Each article is written to provide clear, accurate information that drivers can use.

As the industry continues to deal with a shortage of qualified drivers, one manufacturer is putting more focus on the people behind the wheel. Western Star Trucks is building on that effort in 2026 by expanding its Star Nation Experience, adding new competitions, and increasing dealer involvement to highlight operator skill and raise awareness of trucking as a career path.

The move reflects a broader push to recognize what it actually takes to handle heavy equipment, move materials, and operate safely in demanding conditions.

A Stronger Focus on the Work Behind the Wheel

Western Star is putting a spotlight on the connection between equipment and the people running it. The company continues to emphasize that performance on the road or jobsite comes down to both.

“The people and the equipment working together are what make this industry work,” said Alex Martin-Banzer, Western Star brand manager.

That message carries through the entire program, which is built to showcase real-world ability rather than just display equipment.

Star Nation Experience Returns in 2026

The Star Nation Experience will return for its fourth year from June 5 through June 8, 2026, in Bend, Oregon. The event brings together operators, dealers, and others connected to trucking for hands-on challenges and team-based competition.

New for 2026 is a head-to-head operator showdown designed to put skills front and center. Participants will take part in off-road challenges and activities that reflect the type of work many operators handle in the field.

The program will also continue its connection with American Truck Simulator, using the platform to reach a wider audience and introduce more people to trucking.

Who Can Take Part

Participation is open to operators with an active Class A CDL, along with members of the American Truck Simulator community across the United States and Canada who are over the age of 21.

Winners receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the event.

Two returning participants will step into leadership roles as team captains. Ronald Byrd, based in Texas with experience in the oil industry, and Jarett Dorman from British Columbia with a background in crane operations, will help lead the teams during the competition.

Expanding the Role of Dealers

The 2026 event will also bring dealers further into the experience. Two dealers will be selected to attend and bring a customer with them, highlighting how equipment decisions and ongoing support play out beyond the initial purchase.

That addition is intended to strengthen relationships across different parts of the business while showing how each role connects to day-to-day operations.

Building Interest in Trucking Careers

Beyond competition, the larger goal is to bring more attention to trucking as a long-term career option. By showing the level of skill involved and the range of work operators handle, Western Star is aiming to give a clearer picture of what the job actually looks like.

The Star Nation Experience is designed to connect experienced operators with newer entrants and create more visibility around opportunities in the field.

A Broader Industry Effort

Programs like this reflect a growing effort to highlight the people doing the work, not just the equipment being used. Bringing operators, dealers, and newer audiences into the same space helps reinforce the role each plays in keeping freight and materials moving.

With added competition, expanded participation, and a continued focus on real-world skills, the 2026 Star Nation Experience is set to build on that approach while keeping attention on the individuals who make the industry run.

Yuma Haidara has spent more than a decade behind the wheel as an over-the-road (OTR) professional truck driver. Today, she serves as both a mentor and certified driver trainer for Walmart Transportation in Raymond, New Hampshire, helping shape the next generation of truck drivers with the same determination that fueled her own career.

As of May 2025, Walmart operates around 4,605 stores across the United States, including Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, and discount stores, and more than 10,500 locations worldwide in 19 countries. At the heart of this massive network are drivers like Haidara, whose story is rooted in resilience, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Taking the First Step Into Trucking

Haidara’s trucking career began unexpectedly. While frequently passing a truck driving school on her daily routes, curiosity eventually got the better of her.

“I didn’t even know what I thought I could get out of it, but I just went in and started asking questions,” she recalls. “They told me that my GI bill would cover my training, so I came back on Monday and got started.”

From there, she committed fully, leaving her possessions in storage and moving forward with her new path.

“I put everything in storage and felt that I could retrieve it anytime,” she says. “Well, 12 years later, I am still trucking.”

A Veteran Thriving in a Male-Dominated Field

Before trucking, Haidara served as a Navy Seabee Combat Veteran with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The physically demanding work prepared her for the challenges of trucking—another field often dominated by men.

“The military set me up to work in a man’s world,” she explains. “There were so few of us women who could do the job well. It was very heavy lifting. So, when I went to truck driving school, I was like, Oh, here we go again, back into a male-dominated arena.”

Championing Women in Trucking

Haidara has made it her mission to encourage more women to pursue careers in trucking. Her simple but powerful message:

“If I can do it, you can do it.”

She has inspired many to take the leap.

She urges those considering the industry to stop hesitating:

“Just do it! What are you waiting for?”

For Haidara, trucking brought not just financial stability, but peace of mind.

“My life became so peaceful. I became a better teammate. I realized that I needed to take care of myself at some point, and this job provided the opportunity to do so. I have accomplished many amazing things in my life. These opportunities are endless and available to anyone who wants to be a part of this wonderful trucking industry.”

Balancing Work, Advocacy, and Giving Back

When she’s not on the road, Haidara dedicates her time to non-profits, especially those focused on mental health, a cause that holds deep personal meaning for her.

“This is where my heart is, and Walmart not only supports my mission but also gives me the time I need to do the things that I like. Trucking helps me get to where I need to go to help others, gives me the freedom to help them, and gives me the time to do so.”

Training the Next Generation

Walmart’s Associate-to-Driver Program, a 12-week training initiative, allows employees from any department to earn their CDL and train directly with Walmart drivers. Haidara plays a key role, preparing new drivers not only for the road but for success in the company.

“It is so cool to see them at a less stressful time, and they are like, ‘OMG, you were there.’ It is so great to see people go from 0 to 100, and I have seen it so many times.”

Standing With Veterans

Haidara’s dedication to fellow veterans is unwavering. She actively participates in multiple veteran-focused non-profits and projects—using her platform to support those who served.

“I am a big advocate for Veterans, and whatever I can do for them, I will!”

Her story reflects more than a successful trucking career; it’s about service, perseverance, and inspiring others to see what’s possible when you refuse to let barriers stand in your way.

At Daimler Truck North America’s Madras proving grounds, Western Star’s 2025 Star Nation Experience united six vocational truck operators and two participants from the gaming world for three days of intense challenges, hands-on technology, and industry camaraderie. Competitors traveled from across the U.S. and Canada to put their abilities to the test and explore the future of vocational trucking.

Real-World Skills Meet Real-World Machines

Participants climbed into the cabs of Western Star 47X and 49X models to face a series of demanding events that pushed their precision and problem-solving to the limit. The lineup included:

Backing trucks up the steep incline known as “Mount Madras”

Executing precise gravel spreads at a rock quarry

Going head-to-head in an American Truck Simulator competition

Each challenge was designed not only to assess driver skill but also to highlight the Detroit Assurance safety technology in a safe, controlled environment.

From Gamer to Trucker

Casey LaDelle, returning as a team captain, reflected on what sets the Star Nation Experience apart.

“You realize the people behind the scenes ARE the Western Star brand, and the trucks are the product of the passion for what they do.”

The event’s inclusion of gaming community members underscored how skills can transfer from simulation to real-world trucking.

Passing the Torch to the Next Generation

Last year’s champion, Tatiana DeYoung, stepped into a mentorship role for 2025, finding just as much reward in coaching as she did in competing.

“I like how I’m able to be a part of their experience and let them know what I know, and then they just take it and apply it however they would like.”

Her guidance showcased the event’s blend of competition and collaboration, giving new participants the chance to learn from proven veterans.

Honoring the Backbone of Vocational Trucking

Event lead Alex Bender Martin explained that Star Nation is more than just a competition — it’s a celebration of the people who keep vocational trucking strong.

“We really look at all the winners that are here as the backbone of the vocational industry, and we want to celebrate them. We want to bring back that camaraderie and that pride in this business.”

The three-day experience wasn’t just about winning. From behind-the-scenes tours of Daimler’s facilities to outdoor activities and fireside conversations with executives, Star Nation created a space where technology, skill, and personal connection came together.

While one team ultimately claimed the top spot, the true success of the 2025 Star Nation Experience was in the relationships built, connecting operators, cutting-edge technology, and the Western Star brand in a way that reflects the passion and pride driving the industry forward.
