Truck drivers running freight through major metropolitan areas this summer may want to keep an eye on World Cup schedules.

The tournament got underway on June 11 and will continue through July 19, bringing matches to 16 cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While sporting events regularly generate traffic around stadiums, transportation analysts believe some host cities could experience broader congestion issues that extend beyond game-day traffic.

A recent study from telematics company Geotab suggests the biggest concern may not be how busy a city normally is, but how well it handles sudden spikes in activity.

Not Every Host City Responds the Same Way to Large Events

Ahead of the tournament, Geotab reviewed billions of vehicle data points collected during June and July 2025. The analysis examined how host-city transportation networks performed during periods that included major concerts, sporting events, and other large public gatherings.

Rather than looking only at traffic volume, the company evaluated how quickly road networks recovered after demand increased. That measurement, referred to as resilience, became one of the most important indicators in the study.

A city with heavy daily congestion may still perform relatively well during a major event if traffic conditions return to normal quickly. A city with weaker resilience can experience lingering transportation disruptions long after crowds arrive.

Several Cities Ranked Near the Bottom of the Study

Ten of the sixteen host cities received preparedness scores below 7 out of 10. Foxborough, Massachusetts, which will host matches in the Boston area, earned the highest overall score at 8.01.

Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto landed at the bottom of the rankings, each scoring below 5.

The report also highlighted Los Angeles and Atlanta for particularly poor resilience scores based on how transportation networks responded to large events during the summer of 2025. According to Geotab’s findings, both cities struggled to absorb increased demand without significant traffic disruptions.

For freight carriers and owner-operators, those markets could become more challenging as tournament attendance increases throughout the coming weeks.

Why The Findings Matter for Truck Drivers

Traffic delays around a stadium are rarely the biggest concern for commercial vehicles. The larger issue is how event-related traffic affects surrounding highways, local routes, delivery schedules, and freight movement throughout an entire metropolitan area.

Geotab weighted traffic conditions around stadium locations heavily in its rankings but also included data from the broader metro regions surrounding each venue.

That wider approach provides a better picture of how transportation networks may perform once hundreds of thousands of visitors begin moving through host cities.

Extra Planning Could Help Avoid Delays

Mike Branch, Geotab’s vice president of data and analytics, said resilience scores may provide a useful indicator of how cities will perform during the tournament.

According to Branch, cities with stronger resilience ratings are generally better equipped to handle temporary surges in activity. Areas with lower resilience scores may require additional planning as transportation demand increases.

For truck drivers, that could mean building extra time into schedules, monitoring traffic conditions more closely, and evaluating alternate routes when operating near host markets on match days.

Tournament Continues Through July 19

Matches are scheduled almost daily through July 19, when the championship match will be played in the New York City metropolitan area.

With events taking place throughout North America for more than a month, freight traffic moving through host markets could encounter periodic slowdowns as cities manage increased visitor activity alongside normal transportation demands.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is calling on the trucking community to participate in its 2025 Top Industry Issues Survey, giving drivers, carriers, and other stakeholders a voice in shaping the future of the industry.

Make Your Voice Heard in Trucking

The annual survey asks participants to rank the most pressing concerns facing the trucking sector and share potential strategies for addressing each challenge. Feedback collected helps identify trends and areas needing attention across the nation’s supply chain.

“For over 20 years, the industry has relied on the annual Top Industry Issues Survey to highlight the critical issues facing our nation’s supply chain,” said Dennis Dellinger, American Trucking Associations chair and Cargo Transporters president, CEO. “ATRI’s research provides an opportunity for thousands of trucking industry professionals, from drivers to executives, to weigh in on the most challenging topics that affect our day-to-day operations and collectively decide on the most promising strategies for addressing each.”

Tracking Shifts in Industry Priorities

Now in its 21st year, the survey not only ranks issues but also provides insights into how priorities differ between motor carriers and professional drivers. It allows stakeholders to monitor trends over time, understanding which concerns are gaining importance and which are decreasing in criticality.

“ATRI’s annual survey allows truck drivers to make our collective concerns known,” said Lloyd Howell, an America’s Road Team Captain and professional truck driver for TCW Inc. “Whether your top challenge is truck parking, driver compensation, detention at customer facilities, traffic congestion, or something else, this is your chance to bring those issues to light. Please take a few minutes to complete the online survey and encourage your peers to do so also.”

Survey Timeline and Results

The 2025 Top Industry Issues Survey will remain open until October 10. Results will be shared on October 26 during the American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition in San Diego, California.

Industry professionals are encouraged to participate in the survey by visiting ATRI’s official survey page [here]. Input from drivers, carriers, and other stakeholders is critical in shaping strategies that strengthen the industry and address the challenges affecting daily operations.

Operating on America’s busiest highways can be a truck driver’s greatest challenge. Congestion not only slows deliveries but also strains fuel budgets and heightens safety risks. With strategic preparation and the right tools, truckers can mitigate these obstacles and maintain operational efficiency.

How Traffic Jams Disrupt Delivery Timelines

Heavy traffic can derail even the best-planned schedules. Popular freight bottlenecks, such as the notorious I-95 and SR 4 junction in Fort Lee, New Jersey, are long-standing trouble spots for truckers. Delays in these areas lead to missed deadlines, rescheduled routes, and unsatisfied clients. Staying ahead of these bottlenecks is crucial for dependable deliveries.

The Fuel Inefficiency of Congested Roads

Stop-and-go traffic isn’t just frustrating—it’s costly. Frequent idling and slow speeds hike up fuel consumption. Data from the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) shows that road congestion added a staggering $108.8 billion in trucking costs during 2022. Beyond straining the wallet, these inefficiencies also increase carbon emissions, underlining the environmental impacts of highway gridlock.

The High Safety Risks of Congested Conditions

Traffic congestion is more than an inconvenience; it’s a safety hazard. Crowded highways packed with sudden stops, erratic lane changes, and unexpected accidents raise the likelihood of collisions. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), crashes and breakdowns worsen congestion and put all vehicles at risk. Awareness and caution are critical for navigating such conditions.

Pro Tips for Truck Drivers to Alleviate Traffic Hassles on the Busiest Highways

While challenges are inevitable, proactively planning your trips can help lessen the burden of congested highways. Here are four strategies to keep you moving and safe:

Leverage Real-Time Traffic Technology – Equip your rig with GPS devices or apps that provide live updates on road conditions. By identifying construction zones, accidents, and bottlenecks early, you can detour to safer, faster routes.

Choose Strategic Driving Hours – When possible, align your schedule to avoid rush hours. Early morning or late-night driving through urban centers typically sees lighter traffic, saving both time and fuel.

Rely on Truck-Specific Navigation Systems – General GPS tools might not offer routes optimized for large vehicles. Use navigation tools specifically designed for truckers. These programs consider weight, size restrictions, and road regulations to create tailored and safer routes.

Stay Updated with Traffic Alerts – Keep checking for live reports, whether through apps, radio, or trucking forums. Understanding the causes of gridlock and staying flexible with your route can greatly enhance productivity.

Get Ahead of the Traffic Curve

America’s busiest highways will always pose challenges, but adaptability is key. With the right tools and strategies, truck drivers can overcome the hurdles of traffic, ensuring on-time deliveries and safer roads for everyone.

If you’re planning to drive this holiday season, you’re definitely not alone. An estimated 107 million people will hit the road to visit family and friends during Christmas and New Year’s, making it one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

According to AAA, about 119.3 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between December 21 and January 1. This year’s travel numbers are just shy of the 2019 record, with only 64,000 more people expected to hit the road compared to that year. And if you thought last year was crowded, AAA predicts there will be an extra 3 million travelers this time around.

Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, explains, “This is the time of year when lifelong memories are made with loved ones, and travel plays a big role in that. This year, with Christmas Day falling on a Wednesday, we’re anticipating record-breaking travel numbers the weekend before and the weekend after the holiday.”

Why So Many People Are Driving

For the majority of travelers—around 107 million—hitting the road in their own vehicles is the preferred choice. That’s 2.5 million more drivers compared to last year. While it’s not quite as high as the record of 108 million drivers in 2019, it’s still a huge number.

One reason for this surge in car travel could be the drop in gas prices. Last year, the average price per gallon was around $3.12. This year, lower seasonal gas prices, thanks to colder weather, more people working remotely, and a jump in online shopping, make driving a bit more affordable and appealing.

Expect Heavy Traffic on Key Days

If you’re driving, prepare for delays, especially on the days leading up to Christmas and New Year’s. But don’t worry—the holidays themselves should see lighter traffic. Cities like Boston, New York City, Seattle, and Washington, DC are expected to experience significant congestion, with delays that could be double the usual. Nationwide, travel times might stretch up to 30% longer than normal.

As Bob Pishue, an analyst at INRIX, puts it, “With a near-record number of auto travelers expected this holiday season, drivers should expect delays in and around major metro areas, with Sunday, Dec. 22 expected to be the nation’s worst day to travel. Our advice is to avoid traveling during peak commuting hours during the week. If schedules allow, leave bright and early or after the evening commute.”

Tips for a Smoother Ride

As you get ready to hit the road, it’s smart to plan ahead. Keep an eye on traffic patterns, avoid the busiest times, and give yourself a little extra time to get where you need to go. Most importantly, stay safe out there, and enjoy making those lasting memories with your loved ones this holiday season.

Truck drivers are the lifeblood of the American economy, ensuring that goods are delivered across vast distances efficiently and on time. However, driving on the busiest truck routes in the U.S. presents a unique set of challenges that can make their job incredibly demanding. In this blog, we’ll explore some of the most significant obstacles truckers face on these high-traffic routes, focusing on specific major highways.

I-95: The East Coast Lifeline

Traffic Congestion: Running from Miami, Florida to Houlton, Maine, I-95 is one of the busiest highways in the U.S. It serves major metropolitan areas like Miami, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. Traffic congestion is a constant issue, particularly in urban sections where trucks share the road with millions of commuters.

Regulatory Compliance: I-95 spans multiple states, each with its own regulations regarding weight limits and permits. Truckers must be adept at navigating these varying regulations to avoid fines and delays.

I-5: The West Coast Workhorse

Road Conditions: Stretching from the Mexican border in California to the Canadian border in Washington, I-5 is a critical route for goods moving up and down the West Coast. While California maintains many sections well, parts of Oregon and Washington can be challenging due to weather-related damage and ongoing construction.

Weather Hazards: Truckers on I-5 often contend with diverse weather conditions. Southern California sees heavy traffic and heat, while the Pacific Northwest can have heavy rain and fog, complicating driving conditions.

I-10: The Southern Connector

Traffic Congestion: I-10 runs from Santa Monica, California to Jacksonville, Florida, serving as a major east-west artery in the southern U.S. Congestion is especially problematic in cities like Los Angeles, Houston, and Phoenix.

Weather Hazards: This route is prone to severe weather, including hurricanes in the Gulf Coast region and intense heat in the southwestern desert areas. These conditions can cause significant delays and pose safety risks.

I-80: The Cross-Country Corridor

Road Conditions: I-80 spans from San Francisco, California to Teaneck, New Jersey, making it one of the longest interstate highways in the U.S. The route traverses various terrains, including the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains, where road conditions can be particularly challenging due to snow and ice in the winter months.

Health and Safety Concerns: The long, monotonous stretches of I-80 can lead to fatigue among truckers. Coupled with limited access to amenities, maintaining health and safety on this route is a significant concern.

I-70: The Midwest Passage

Road Conditions: I-70 stretches from Cove Fort, Utah to Baltimore, Maryland. The Midwest section of I-70 is notorious for rough road conditions, frequent construction zones, and unpredictable weather, all of which can cause delays and vehicle damage.

Technological Challenges: With the increasing reliance on Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and GPS, connectivity issues in rural areas along I-70 can disrupt schedules and increase stress for truckers.

Truckers on the busiest routes in the U.S. face an array of challenges ranging from traffic congestion and regulatory compliance to adverse weather conditions and health concerns. Specific routes like I-95, I-5, I-10, I-80, and I-70 each present unique obstacles that truckers must navigate daily. Despite these challenges, truckers continue to play a critical role in maintaining the flow of goods across the country.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Jack Marchbanks have introduced an innovative initiative leveraging technology to identify and communicate traffic congestion, particularly in high-congestion and high-crash areas. The initiative involves installing warning systems at 13 highway sites near major urban centers, which have been identified as problematic by ODOT.

Equipped with cameras, these sites will automatically detect slow or stopped traffic, triggering nearby message boards to alert approaching drivers about potential traffic hazards. In addition to on-site warnings, alerts will be disseminated through traffic apps like OHGO.

“As technology continues to evolve, we’re always looking for new ways to help prevent serious and fatal crashes on our highways,” DeWine said. “Although we’re confident that these warning systems will help prevent crashes, there is still no substitute for safe driving. For these signs to be effective, drivers must be paying attention.”

The primary goal of these warning systems is to address the rising number of “end-of-queue” crashes, where drivers fail to recognize slowing or stopped traffic, resulting in collisions at the tail end of the slowdown.

ODOT reported an increase in end-of-queue crashes to 8,811 in 2023. The introduction of technology at these 13 sites aims to decrease such crashes by at least 16%, anticipating a reduction of around 1,400 collisions. The first system was activated on I-70 westbound at State Route 310 in Licking County, a location associated with a fatal rear-end crash in November 2023.

The automated traffic queue warning systems share technology similarities with ODOT’s wrong-way driver detection systems in Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus. These existing systems have successfully identified nearly 300 wrong-way drivers, showcasing the effectiveness of such technology.

“I’m incredibly proud of the efforts our team has made to ensure Ohio is leading the way when it comes to deploying these new resources,” Marchbanks said. “These new warning systems, combined with Ohio’s toughened distracted driving laws, will surely save lives.”

ODOT is optimistic about the potential impact of these warning systems on road safety. The initiative aligns with efforts to mitigate distracted driving, with provisional crash data from the Ohio State Highway Patrol indicating a significant reduction in traffic crashes in 2023 compared to previous years.

“Education of distracted driving, along with this technology, will help achieve our mutual goals of increasing safety on our roads and reducing serious crashes,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Ohio State Highway Patrol superintendent. “We, as troopers, take it to heart that our job every day is to ensure that motorists make it home to their families, and we make it home to ours.”

While the full implementation of the automated warning systems at the remaining 12 sites will take approximately two years, ODOT is actively evaluating other highway locations in the state that could benefit from similar technology. This forward-looking approach reflects the state’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance road safety and prevent avoidable accidents.

For professional drivers who spend a lot of time on the road, it probably will not come as a shock to learn that, according to the recent Cost of Congestion study by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), the trucking industry incurred $94.6 billion in costs due to traffic congestion on U.S. highways in 2021, resulting in a loss of a shocking 1.27 billion hours of productivity.

ATRI stated that in addition to adding direct costs to factors including driver compensation, fuel, and repair and maintenance, it “generates indirect and/or social costs such as supply chain disruptions, inefficient use of fuel, and diminished air quality.”

Furthermore, the report stated that “in 2023, 6.793 billion additional gallons of diesel were wasted due to congestion.”

Congestion on our nation’s highways arises for several reasons, one being the overall poor condition of our nation’s roads and bridges. The health of U.S. roads is, in part, a consequence of the fact that the fuel tax has not been raised since 1993, leading to reduced spending on infrastructure improvements. Outdated infrastructure leads to an excessive amount of congestion and backed-up traffic patterns.

Although Congress passed a massive infrastructure spending bill, which is anticipated to facilitate improvements that alleviate congestion, the broader question remains unaddressed: How will the future funding of the Highway Trust Fund, responsible for financing most federal government spending on highways, be secured?

Presently, it is funded through a federal fuel tax of 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel and 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline. As we transition into a future with fewer trucks operating on diesel, the source of funds for highways becomes uncertain, prompting the need to address this question before diving too deeply into the zero-emission movement of freight.
