Registration is officially open for the American Trucking Associations’ annual Safety, Security, and Human Resources National Conference and Exhibition. The event is co-hosted by the Safety Management Council and the Transportation Security Council and serves as a key gathering for fleet leaders who focus on safety, compliance, workforce strategy, and operational risk.

The conference takes place April 1 to 3, 2026, at the Omni Oklahoma City. Attendees can choose from four educational tracks focused on safety, security, human resources, and claims or loss prevention. Each track is designed to help fleet managers and organizational leaders strengthen programs, adopt new tools, and bring home practical solutions they can use immediately.

The agenda includes sessions on advancing camera technology, modern approaches to driver coaching, applications of AI in safety and HR operations, and updated recruitment and retention strategies. The event also features workshops, roundtables, and networking activities, including a casino night and an evening at TopGolf, that create opportunities to connect with peers and industry experts.

The 2026 conference will include three general sessions featuring ATA President and CEO Chris Spear, keynote speaker Tim Richardson, and several panels covering safety leadership, workforce development, and security challenges.

As Jacob Pierce, Executive Director of ATA’s Safety Management Council and Transportation Security Council, said, “Our mission with SSHR is to create a space where trucking professionals can collaborate, grow, and elevate their impact. By uniting a wide range of expertise and perspectives, we strengthen the industry’s safety and security efforts while advancing a more innovative and supportive human resources landscape for the trucking workforce.”

Cargo theft continues to climb year after year, and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is now asking truck drivers and other industry professionals to weigh in on how to stop it.

Cargo Theft Losses Continue to Climb

The numbers paint a troubling picture. According to CargoNet, a New Jersey-based logistics security firm, theft-related losses jumped 13% in the second quarter of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. In just three months, the losses were valued at more than $61 million.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau has also raised concerns. The group is projecting a 22% year-over-year rise in losses this year, fueled in part by increasingly sophisticated theft methods and cyber-enabled attacks targeting the supply chain.

DOT Seeks Feedback from the Industry

To address the problem, the DOT issued a request for information on September 19. The department is inviting feedback from truckers, carriers, law enforcement, federal partners, and others who play a role in protecting freight.

“These crimes involve opportunistic ‘straight thefts’ of trailers, containers, and loads at truck stops or multimodal distribution hubs and highly coordinated operations conducted by organized criminal networks,” the DOT explained. “Both categories create significant economic losses, disrupt supply chains, and in some cases fund broader illicit activities such as narcotics trafficking, counterfeiting, and human smuggling.”

The department is asking for insight on:

Which commodities are most at risk?

The types of theft scenarios drivers and carriers are seeing most often.

The technologies and practices already being used to reduce exposure.

Possible Steps Forward

Officials say the responses will help shape next steps. The DOT noted that public input could guide efforts to:

Work with law enforcement to close regulatory gaps that allow unsafe carriers to re-enter under new names.

Strengthen how cargo theft risks are assessed by using shared data from federal, state, and industry partners.

Expand coordination with Homeland Security, FBI, Customs and Border Protection, and local agencies.

Build new initiatives with industry stakeholders to reduce losses and improve supply chain security.

How to Get Involved

The public comment period is open for 30 days. Drivers, carriers, and other stakeholders can submit feedback online at Regulations.gov by referencing Docket No. DOT–OST–2025–1326. All comments must be submitted by October 20, 2025.

Two fleets recognized for their exemplary dedication to safety and loss prevention.

The Transportation Security Council of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently honored two standout fleets for their exceptional efforts in advancing security within the trucking industry.

“Trucking is an industry of frontline responders who make it a priority to keep the public and our customers safe,” said Chris Spear, ATA president and CEO. “Having a strong commitment to security—whether it’s preventing theft, crime, or terrorism—is an important responsibility for our industry, and these carriers have shown tremendous dedication to it.”

The awards were presented during the ATA’s 2025 Safety, Security & Human Resources National Conference & Exhibition in Louisville, Kentucky.

2025 Award Recipients

ATA Excellence in Security: ABF Freight

ATA Excellence in Claims & Loss Prevention: Old Dominion Freight Line

“Recognizing these fleets is about more than awards—it’s about highlighting a deep commitment to protecting people, freight, and the integrity of our operations,” said Jacob Pierce, TSC executive director. “Their leadership in security, claims, and loss prevention reflects the kind of forward-thinking, principled approach our industry needs more of.”

These recognitions highlight the vital role of security in the trucking sector and encourage adopting industry-leading best practices to protect goods and ensure public safety.
