The goal was to show young girls that careers in transportation, energy and sustainability are absolutely open to them.

“Suburban Propane is proud to partner with the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey to inspire the next generation of innovators, leaders, and changemakers,” said Fran Cleffi, vice president of human resources for Suburban Propane. “Through Trucks are for Girls: Fueling the Future, we hope to empower young girls to see themselves in industries that are driving America’s energy transformation and to help them build the confidence to pursue any career they choose.”

The event took place at Suburban Propane’s national headquarters in Whippany, New Jersey. Girl Scouts from across the region showed up for hands on learning and leadership activities. They broke into sessions on science, entrepreneurship and innovation to learn how clean energy powers communities and how their own creativity can shape the future workforce.

They got a behind the scenes look at Suburban Propane’s operations, climbed into a propane delivery truck and tried out a driving simulator inside the Women In Trucking Association’s WITney trailer. They also sat in on career chats with women working in areas such as technology, accounting, marketing and legal. In one activity the girls worked together to build cause driven cookie campaigns that mixed business skills with community impact. Each participant went home with a Suburban Propane Patch and a WIT Transportation Patch as a keepsake.

“We are grateful for our partnership with Suburban Propane and for their support in putting together and hosting the Trucks are for Girls event,” said Sandra A. Kenoff, president and CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey. “This collaboration gives our Girl Scouts the unique opportunity to explore career paths they may have never considered, connect with mentors who are paving the way in “nontraditional” fields, and see firsthand the many ways women are leading in transportation and logistics. We thank Suburban Propane for their support and for creating such an inspiring experience.”

While the girls explored the industry, parents and guardians joined a professional development workshop called Gear Up for Success Your Resume and Your Brand. The session was led by Suburban Propane’s human resources team.

This effort ties into SuburbanCares, the company’s nationwide outreach program that supports youth empowerment, education and community involvement across the 42 states where it operates.

Ryder System Inc., a prominent name in transportation and logistics, has been recognized as one of Fortune magazine’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” for 2025.

“There’s a reason we consistently earn top marks on Fortune’s corporate reputation report card for attributes like workforce development, innovation, and product excellence,” stated Robert Sanchez, chairman and CEO of Ryder. “For 13 years, this recognition is a testament to Ryder’s unwavering commitment to our employees, the value of investing in cutting-edge solutions, and the trust our customers place in us to keep their supply chains moving.”

13 Years of Consistent Recognition

Ryder’s inclusion on the prestigious Fortune list for the 13th year in a row highlights the company’s continuous dedication to excellence in the logistics, trucking, and transportation sectors.

Fortune develops this annual ranking based on input from industry leaders, including executives, board members, and analysts across more than 50 industries globally. Companies are scored on nine essential attributes, such as innovation, product or service quality, ability to attract talent, social responsibility, investment value, and workforce management. Achieving a spot on this list requires companies to rank in the upper half of their industry category—a benchmark Ryder continues to surpass.

Recognized Pioneer and Employer of Distinction

This latest achievement adds to a growing list of recognitions for Ryder. The company was noted by Newsweek as one of “America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity” in both 2025 and 2024. Furthermore, it earned the title of one of “America’s Greatest Workplaces” in 2024 and was celebrated as one of “America’s Most Trustworthy Companies” in 2023.

These accolades demonstrate Ryder’s pioneering approach and its strong, people-focused culture, further cementing its role as a leader in the logistics and transportation industries.

Exciting developments are underway along the I-10 corridor stretching from California to Texas, where a new truck parking availability system is being developed. To ensure its success, state transportation departments are seeking direct input from truckers themselves.

This innovative truck parking availability system aims to install digital signs across California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. These signs will display real-time data on available parking spaces at upcoming rest areas, aiding truck drivers in planning their stops more efficiently.

To address any challenges truck drivers might encounter when parking along this route, the I-10 Corridor Coalition is conducting a survey. Truck drivers and dispatchers are encouraged to share their experiences and insights regarding operations and parking conditions along I-10. Rest assured, all survey responses will be treated with strict confidentiality.

If you’re a trucker navigating the I-10 corridor, your feedback is invaluable. Take the I-10 corridor truck parking survey here.

While the new system won’t add more parking spots, it will significantly enhance the ease and safety of finding vacant ones. The American Transportation Research Institute reports that truck drivers typically lose about an hour daily searching for parking, which translates into an annual loss of $5,500 in earnings per driver.

This parking availability system will be rolled out at 37 locations along the nearly 1,700-mile I-10 stretch. This includes six spots in California, eight in Arizona, five in New Mexico, and 18 in Texas.

According to the I-10 Corridor Coalition, there are plans to further enhance this system by integrating real-time parking data into existing smartphone applications.

The concept of truck parking availability systems isn’t new. It mirrors the approach used in the Midwest, where in 2015, eight states received part of a $25 million TIGER grant to develop a regional Truck Parking Information Management System, spanning from Kansas to Ohio.

Variable message signs, or truck parking availability systems, have proven their worth. According to a survey by ATRI, 70% of truck drivers found these signs beneficial. However, the effectiveness of such systems often depends on drivers’ experience. While less than half of surveyed drivers reported acting on the information provided, those with one to five years of experience were the most likely to utilize the signs effectively.

Your insights could help shape a more efficient and driver-friendly experience along the I-10 corridor. Share your thoughts today!

Walmart is paving new career paths by broadening its groundbreaking Associate-to-Driver program. This initiative, which kicked off last year, empowers Walmart associates to secure their commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and transition into roles within Walmart’s extensive Private Fleet. The program is now opening its doors even wider to include more associates eager to advance their careers.

For a long time, Walmart associates have admired the vital role of the company’s Private Fleet—a dedicated team exceeding 13,000 drivers who ensure timely and efficient delivery of goods. Many associates have shown interest in becoming drivers themselves. However, the financial and time requirements of obtaining a CDL often seemed daunting.

Enter Walmart’s Fleet Development program. Initially launched to offer supply chain associates a streamlined path to earn their CDL and join Walmart’s Private Fleet as drivers, this initiative is now extending its reach. Associates in retail stores, distribution hubs, fulfillment centers, and transport offices near participating transportation facilities can now apply for the Associate-to-Driver program.

This comprehensive 12-week training, guided by seasoned Walmart driving instructors, provides hands-on experience. Participants who complete the program and earn their CDL can step into one of the most desirable roles in the industry. Walmart notes that new drivers have the potential to earn up to $110,000 in their first year, with earnings increasing based on location and tenure.

Among the latest success stories is Levor Franklin, who completed his training in Dover, Delaware. He now fulfills his aspiration of being a Walmart truck driver.

Walmart drivers are trained to uphold standards of safety, courtesy, and pride in their work. This dedication to safety has been recognized by the American Trucking Association, which has awarded Walmart the title of Safest Fleet in the Over 250 Million Mile Division for six consecutive years. By offering premier training from the outset, Walmart not only cultivates a skilled team but also sustains high standards for safety and customer service.

This program offers mutual benefits. Associates can progress in their careers without leaving Walmart, the company strengthens its workforce, and customers continue to receive reliable service from one of the largest private fleets in the industry.

Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott Remains Unconvinced

The renowned Iowa 80 Truckstop, strategically placed along Interstate 80 in Walcott, Eastern Iowa, proudly claims its status as the world’s largest truck stop. Currently, the establishment remains skeptical that a new 30-acre truck stop in Dundee, Illinois, will dethrone them.

Is Chicago’s Suburb the New Host of the World’s Largest Truck Stop?

Recent plans from Outpost, a Texas-based company, announce a substantial 30-acre development off Interstate 90 in West Dundee, Illinois. With proposed capacity for 1,000 semi-trailer trucks, some media sources speculate this new site could assume the title of the “world’s largest truck stop.”

Executive Delia Meier from Iowa 80 expresses her doubts:

“They haven’t built it yet, so you could say anything you want to,” remarks Delia Meier, an executive and senior vice president of the Iowa 80 Group Inc., casting doubt on the claims surrounding the new facility.

Meier continues, “They say it’s a 30-acre site, and they’re going to put 1,000 truck parking spots on it. You’re not going to be able to put that on 30 acres.”

The Iowa 80 Truckstop, celebrating its milestone of 60 years in operation, offers expansive parking for 900 semis across 220 acres. Unlike its Illinois counterpart, it features a wealth of amenities.

“We have nine restaurants, 24 private showers,” Meier elaborates. “There’s a chiropractor, there’s a barbershop, a dentist — everything we could think of is here, and we’ve got some more ideas.”

The Distinctive Model of West Dundee’s Facility

The upcoming West Dundee project, set on a repurposed landfill, deviates from traditional truck stop models, functioning instead as a dedicated space for truckers to park trailers and prepare for outgoing loads. The facility lacks the fueling stations, shops, and dining options that attract over 5,000 visitors daily to Iowa 80.

“It’s not a truck stop,” Meier asserts. “It’s a trailer lot. I think they’ve got a good model, but it doesn’t have anything to do with the world’s largest truck stop.”

A Legacy of Innovation and Family Leadership

The Iowa 80 Truckstop has a rich history, founded by Bill Moon in 1964 when he was a regional manager for Standard Oil. He purchased the truck stop in 1984, continually enhancing its services and amenities. Today, it features a truck museum and hosts an annual truckers’ jamboree, maintaining its vibrant community spirit.

Moon’s passing in 1992 did not halt the legacy; family members have continued to lead, keeping the business family-owned and expanding operations to include other locations in Joplin, Missouri, and Kenly, North Carolina.

Reflecting on current challenges, Meier observes, “Trucking is going through a very tough time right now. Right now, rates are terrible, and we can only do as well as our customers.”

The Iowa 80 Truckstop stands firm in its position, awaiting any challenge to its long-held title with skepticism.

In a significant move to empower low-income youth in Texas, the Trucking Cares Foundation (TCF) has pledged $25,000 to the South Dallas Driving Academy. This non-profit is renowned for offering complimentary driver education to teens and young adults who face financial constraints.

Empowering Future Truckers

Phil Byrd, the chairman of TCF, expressed his admiration for the Academy’s impact, stating, “The South Dallas Driving Academy has been instrumental in removing roadblocks to rewarding careers in trucking. Providing young Texans with the tools they need to succeed empowers them to break the cycle of poverty and build a bright future for themselves and their families. This organization has grown exponentially in such a short time. It is truly amazing to witness. The Trucking Cares Foundation is proud to continue our support of this transformative program that invests in the next generation of our industry.”

A Legacy of Support

This recent donation builds on TCF’s history of backing SDDA. Initially, TCF contributed $15,000 in 2021 to help launch the program, followed by an additional $20,000 in 2023, showcasing its unwavering commitment to the Academy’s success.

Chris Petersen, vice president of Rally Fleet Services and chair of SDDA, remarked, “When so much of our energy at the South Dallas Driving Academy is focused on helping young men and women overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers entering our industry, the continued support of ATA leadership and the Trucking Cares Foundation is incredibly encouraging. I will always remember ATA Chairman Andrew Boyle’s emphatic endorsement of our vision when we first presented the concept just over three years ago. Shortly thereafter, TCF began its support of our program. Thanks in large part to TCF’s support, SDDA has expanded from a 7-student pilot program to one that has graduated 110 Class C and 5 Class A drivers in the past 14 months. TCF’s ongoing sponsorship will ensure that we can continue providing these crucial life credentials so we can help fill the pipeline of the next generation of trucking professionals.”

Breaking Barriers with Education

The press release highlights a stark reality—almost 40% of low-income individuals in urban U.S. areas, and nearly half in South Dallas, lack a valid driver’s license due to the scarcity of affordable driver education. The South Dallas Driving Academy offers a unique dual-pathway program, enabling South Dallas residents to earn their driver’s licenses and prepare for a career in transportation. This trailblazing initiative, exclusive to Bonton and South Dallas residents, boasts an impressive 90% course completion and graduation rate.

Von Minor, president & executive director of SDDA, emphasized the significance of TCF’s contribution, saying, “Because of the continuing support of the Trucking Cares Foundation, the SDDA is able to provide the tuition and scholarships that are required for men and women to matriculate through our quarterly Class A/CDL Commercial License Program and launch career pathways into the trucking industry. What was once a barrier has become an economic pathway.”

When disasters like hurricanes, floods, or wildfires strike, the need for immediate aid becomes crucial. Enter the truckers, the unsung heroes driving essential supplies to communities in distress. If you’re one of those dedicated drivers, gaining a clear understanding of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) loads can position you as an indispensable part of relief efforts.

What Are FEMA Loads?

Imagine a town ravaged by a powerful storm. The community’s infrastructure is shattered, stores are closed, and families are left in dire conditions. This is where FEMA loads come into play, delivering critical supplies to those in need.

These shipments frequently include vital resources such as:

Search and Rescue Equipment: Crucial for first responders to effectively reach and assist victims.

Non-Perishable Food Items: Essentials like canned foods and dry mixes provide nutrition when grocery stores are inaccessible.

Clean Drinking Water and Medical Supplies: Essential for survival during the aftermath of disasters.

Construction Materials and Power Generators: Necessary for rebuilding homes and restoring power to affected areas.

Personal Care Products: Items like clothing and hygiene kits help restore dignity to those in crisis.

Challenges in Transporting FEMA Loads

While transporting FEMA loads is rewarding, it comes with its own set of hurdles. The unpredictable nature of disasters can lead to last-minute changes, from delivery schedules to rerouting due to impassable roads.

Driving through disaster zones poses additional challenges, including damaged infrastructure and changing weather conditions. Prioritizing safety is key—not just for successful delivery, but also for your own protection.

Patience is crucial. Delays in loading and unloading are common as logistics teams coordinate amidst the chaos. Understanding this will help you work collaboratively toward the shared goal of aiding those affected.

Getting Ready for the Job

Preparation is critical if you’re gearing up to handle FEMA loads:

Thoroughly Inspect Your Truck: Regular maintenance is crucial to preventing unexpected issues on the road.

Equip with Emergency Supplies: Keep your vehicle stocked with essentials like food, water, and a basic first-aid kit, as you never know when they might be needed.

Understand FEMA Regulations: Familiarize yourself with the necessary requirements to streamline bureaucratic processes.

Network with Experienced Truckers: Connect with peers who have experience in hauling FEMA loads to gain valuable insights and support.

Becoming a FEMA-Approved Driver

To become a FEMA-approved driver, start by exploring FEMA’s guidelines for transportation service providers. It’s essential to understand the required documentation and compliance measures. Ensure your registration is active on SAM.gov, as it’s a prerequisite for engaging in government contracts.

Complete the Transportation Service Provider registration form, and upon approval, you’ll receive confirmation via email, allowing you to accept FEMA load assignments. Adhering to the Standard Tender of Service (STOS) Program is vital to maintaining compliance.

Your Impact as a Trucker

In times of crisis, your role as a trucker is pivotal. Without your dedication, transporting essential goods to those in need would be incredibly challenging. Your efforts go beyond moving freight; they directly influence the well-being and recovery of countless individuals.

As you traverse the highways, remember that each mile brings hope closer to those in need. You’re not just a driver; you’re a vital component of a network that empowers communities to rebuild and recover. Together, we can ensure that essential assistance reaches those who require it most.
