For truck drivers, summer driving comes with a predictable set of problems. Water gets warm too fast. Food doesn’t stay cold as long as it should. The cab turns into a sauna after lunch break. Bugs seem to cover the windshield the minute it gets cleaned.

The good news is that most of those problems are easy to solve with a few practical items that experienced drivers rely on every year. While there is no piece of gear that will make a July afternoon feel like October, the right equipment can make a long day on the road much more comfortable.

Which Summer Gear Gets Used the Most?

If you asked ten experienced drivers which summer purchases they use most often, insulated water jugs, coolers, and windshield sunshades would probably top the list.

Those are the items drivers reach for every day, not just when something goes wrong. Before spending money on specialty gear, it makes sense to start with the basics that solve the biggest summer frustrations.

Insulated Water Jugs

Staying hydrated sounds simple until you’re halfway through a shift and the cold drink you packed that morning is no longer cold.

That is why many drivers stop relying on disposable water bottles once summer arrives. A quality insulated jug keeps water cold for hours and reduces the number of drink purchases made throughout the week.

Two popular options are the RTIC Outback Half Gallon Jug and the YETI Rambler Half Gallon Jug. The RTIC model is often chosen by drivers looking for strong performance at a lower price point. The YETI version costs more, but many drivers feel the durability and ice retention justify the investment.

Regardless of brand, having cold water available throughout the day is one of the easiest ways to make summer driving more comfortable.

Coolers

A cooler might be the only item on this list that can save money while also making life on the road easier. Drivers who spend several days away from home know how quickly food costs add up. A cooler makes it easier to bring meals, store snacks, and keep drinks cold without relying on truck stop purchases throughout the day.

The RTIC Ultra Light Cooler has become a popular choice because it provides strong cooling performance without being excessively heavy. Drivers who prioritize maximum ice retention often choose the YETI Tundra Cooler, which is designed for extended cooling performance during longer trips.

For many drivers, a quality cooler ends up being one of the most-used items in the truck during the summer months.

Windshield Sunshades

Nothing reminds a driver how hot it is outside faster than opening the truck door after it has been sitting in direct sunlight.

A windshield sunshade helps reduce heat buildup inside the cab and can make a noticeable difference when returning to the truck after a break.

Many drivers use products such as the HeatShield Windshield Sun Shade or the WeatherTech SunShade because both are designed to block sunlight and help keep interior temperatures under control.

A sunshade is not expensive, but it is one of those purchases drivers often wish they had made sooner.

Rechargeable Fans

Air conditioning systems work hard during the summer, but additional airflow can still make a difference. Rechargeable fans are especially useful during rest breaks and overnight stops when drivers want extra air circulation in the sleeper.

The Coghlan’s Rechargeable Camp Fan is a common choice because it combines portability with a built-in light. Another option is the Geek Aire Rechargeable Fan, which is known for powerful airflow and extended battery life.

Drivers who spend time parked in hot climates often consider a fan one of the more useful comfort upgrades available.

Portable Power Banks

Most drivers depend on their phones for far more than making calls. Navigation, weather alerts, parking information, communication, and work-related apps all rely on battery power. Running out of charge at the wrong time can quickly become frustrating.

The Energizer 20,000mAh Power Bank provides enough capacity to recharge most phones multiple times. The Anker PowerCore Essential 20K is another widely used option that has built a reputation for reliability and fast charging.

A portable power bank may not get used every day, but when it is needed, drivers are usually glad they packed one.

Work Lights

Summer does not eliminate breakdowns, inspections, or unexpected equipment problems.

A rechargeable work light can make it easier to inspect equipment before sunrise, after sunset, or during poor weather conditions.

The RYOBI ONE+ LED Work Light is designed for maintenance and inspection tasks, while the NEBO Big Larry Pro+ offers a compact design that stores easily inside the truck.

Like a spare tire, a work light is something most drivers hope they never need. That usually changes the first time they find themselves dealing with an issue after dark.

Windshield Cleaning Supplies

Summer bug season can be relentless. Drivers running through rural areas and agricultural regions often find themselves cleaning bug residue off the windshield several times a week. Waiting too long can make visibility worse and make the buildup harder to remove.

Products such as Rain-X Bug Remover Windshield Washer Fluid and the Invisible Glass Reach and Clean Kit are designed specifically for that purpose.

Keeping the windshield clean takes only a few minutes, but it can make a noticeable difference during bright mornings, late afternoons, and rainy conditions.

What Summer Gear Is Worth Buying First?

Drivers looking to prioritize purchases should start with the items they are most likely to use every day. An insulated water jug, a cooler, and a windshield sunshade will probably see more use during a typical summer than almost anything else on this list. Once those basics are covered, items such as rechargeable fans, power banks, and work lights can help solve other common challenges that come with hot-weather driving.

The best summer gear is not necessarily the most expensive gear. It is the gear that helps eliminate everyday frustrations and makes life on the road a little easier.

Long summer days on the road mean the sun’s working overtime—right along with you. If your cab heats up fast and A/C isn’t always enough, some simple fixes can change the game. These aren’t just nice-to-haves. Real truckers and industry pros recommend them for keeping cabs safe, cool, and comfortable all season.

1. Block Out Heat with Real Sunshades and Covers

Start by investing in high-quality sunshades designed specifically for trucks. Custom-fit front and side window sunshades that offer UV protection can drop cab temperatures by several degrees. Brands like WeatherTech, Covercraft UVS100, and AutoTech Zone are well known for their durability and fit. These shades stick well and block out glare and heat fast.

In addition to front covers, adding mesh or reflective side window screens is a smart move. These affordable shades fit most big rigs and can be attached with suction cups, so you can easily move them if needed. On top of that, consider interior curtains or thermal panels inside the cab. These give an extra layer of protection against the sun’s heat, especially during breaks or while resting.

2. Insulate and Ventilate for Better Comfort

Your truck seat can trap heat on a hot day, turning into a real sauna. Ventilated seat covers that allow airflow under you can make a big difference in comfort. These are widely available and fit most truck seats, providing active cooling while driving or at rest.

Also, clip-on 12V fans are a quick and inexpensive way to boost airflow inside the cab, especially near your face or shoulders, where A/C doesn’t always reach well. For an extra chill, portable evaporative coolers and cooling neck towels come in handy on blazing hot stops.

Thermal or insulated panels for sleeper cabs help lock in cooler temps, making your rest periods much more comfortable. These shade panels block heat from leaking in through windows while you try to catch some shut-eye.

3. Park Smart and Use Ventilation Tricks

Whenever possible, park under shade or arrange your rig so the windshield faces away from the strongest sunlight. This simple habit keeps your cab cooler when parked, cutting down how long it takes for the A/C to cool things down.

If you can’t find shade, pop your windows just a few inches using window deflectors. These allow fresh air to circulate without letting bugs or rain inside, and they help release built-up heat from the cab before you get back in.

Why These Mods Matter

Taking time to shield your cab from the sun and heat isn’t just about feeling comfortable—it’s about staying safe and staying alert. Cooler cabs reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and improve rest quality in your sleeper. Plus, keeping a cab cooler means less wear on your truck’s A/C system over time. You stay fresher and more focused on the long road ahead.

Simple cab upgrades and smart summer habits pay off with safer, more comfortable driving and rest—all while protecting you and your gear from the heat.

Volvo Trucks North America recently subjected its latest flagship, the all-new Volvo VNL, to one of the toughest vehicle validation programs worldwide. This intensive testing took place in Fairbanks, Alaska — a region notorious for brutal winters where temperatures regularly plunge to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (-40°C).

Pushing Boundaries in Extreme Cold
To guarantee that the next-generation VNL truck meets the highest standards of performance, reliability, and driver comfort, Volvo’s testing team braved some of the most severe winter conditions on the planet.

“Alaska is one of the harshest places on Earth to operate a truck, and that is exactly why we are here,” explained Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “We test in extreme environments so when our customers face unpredictable conditions, they can count on their Volvo to perform.”

Testing Beyond the Lab Walls
Every year, Volvo’s cold weather testing team embarks on a demanding journey spanning more than 3,000 miles from Colorado up to Alaska. This extended field test lasts several months and covers a variety of driving conditions, mimicking the real-world challenges truck drivers face daily.

From long-distance highway stretches to congested urban routes with frequent stops, the all-new VNL endures a comprehensive evaluation aimed at refining its capabilities. Experienced professional drivers—many with decades navigating Alaska’s toughest terrains—offer invaluable feedback, paired with real-time data collected by Volvo engineers. This combination allows fine-tuning of everything from engine response to in-cab ergonomics.

The Crucial ‘Cold Soak’ Test
One of the hallmark procedures in this validation process is the “cold soak.” Here, trucks are left outside overnight with engines off, allowing all components to reach Arctic-level subzero temperatures. After 12 hours in this frozen state, the expectation is that the truck will start effortlessly and operate as seamlessly as drivers would need in real, harsh conditions.

Voorhoeve emphasized the importance of this real-world testing approach: “The all-new VNL was designed to change everything and that includes how we approach testing and refinement in real-world conditions – to challenge our trucks and gain insights that would be impossible to replicate in a lab. What we learn in Alaska helps us deliver a truck that is not only innovative but proven where it matters most: on the road, in the real world, and in the hands of our customers.”

Built for North America’s Diverse Environments
According to Volvo’s official press release, the VNL was purpose-built for the wide-ranging North American landscape. Its design draws inspiration from five distinct biomes: urban centers, deserts, prairies, coastal forests, and the Arctic tundra. This ensures the truck is well-equipped for demanding coast-to-coast operations, capable of handling up to 3,000 miles across diverse climate zones.

Volvo Trucks North America has earned the prestigious Red Dot Award for its groundbreaking design of the all-new Volvo VNL, emphasizing the brand’s ability to merge aesthetics, innovation, and functionality in the trucking industry.

“When most people hear design, they think of automotive or fashion, not heavy-duty trucks. However, for our team, design plays a critical role in everything from fuel efficiency to driver comfort,” shared Brian Balicki, head of design at Volvo Trucks North America. “With the all-new Volvo VNL, we started with a blank sheet of paper and reimagined the truck from the ground up. The streamlined, wedge-shaped cab and dramatically sloped windshield are not just visually striking, they reduce aerodynamic drag and help deliver up to 10% better fuel efficiency compared to the legacy model. Inside, we transformed the driving environment and sleeper into a space that feels more like a home away from home.”

Cutting-edge redesign and features

Revealed in January 2024, the all-new Volvo VNL represents six years of intensive research and represents a complete rethinking of the long-haul truck. With a nearly 90% redesign from its predecessors, the truck offers enhanced productivity, safety, profitability, and sustainability, addressing the demands of the North American freight transport sector.

The Volvo VNL is visually distinguished by its dynamic lines, aerodynamic efficiency, and innovative wedge-shaped profile. Its curved windshield reduces drag, while the angled front grille, headlights, and intakes enhance both form and function. Volvo described this design as “a significant industry shift” that exemplifies its brand strengths.

Inside the cabin, driver-focused features fuel innovation. An all-new 24-volt electrical system hosts technologies like dynamic displays, a Camera Monitor System, inductive charging, and task/ambient lighting. Comfort is redefined with customizable cab configurations, upgraded materials, and amenities like versatile bunk setups and airline-inspired window shades designed to meet drivers’ needs.

Revolutionizing the driver experience

“The all-new Volvo VNL was designed to change everything for heavy-duty trucks, and we evaluated every detail of the driver experience from selecting materials that provide a premium look and feel to incorporating innovative safety features that help protect drivers in case of an accident,” remarked Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America. “Winning this prestigious design award validates the six years of dedication that went into transforming our flagship VNL model. We created a vehicle that not only connects with customers but also delivers exceptional performance and comfort.”

The design innovations are aimed at creating a driver experience that reflects their needs on the road, earning praise from drivers and the broader trucking industry along the way.

About the Red Dot Award

The Red Dot Design Award is a globally celebrated mark of recognition, honoring exceptional design across industries. Originating in Essen, Germany over 70 years ago, it spans 51 categories, including vehicles, electronics, household goods, and more. Winning the Red Dot Award reflects not only design excellence but also innovation and functionality.

The official award announcement will occur on July 8 at the Designers’ Night hosted at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen.

Volvo Trucks continues to push industry boundaries, setting a new standard for functionality, comfort, and design with the Volvo VNL.

When you’re clocking long hours behind the wheel, every little detail inside the cab starts to matter a whole lot more. We asked the Truck Drivers USA community one simple question: What’s more important—a comfy seat or a great sound system?

Turns out, drivers have a lot to say about it—and while the answers were mixed, the majority leaned toward comfort, especially when the miles start adding up. Here’s a look at what real drivers had to say.

Comfort Comes First

For many, the answer was immediate and clear: it’s all about the seat.

“Definitely a comfy seat!” – Shirley Davis

“If your seat isn’t comfortable your riding ability suffers and you can’t enjoy the sound system.” – Stephen DeBaun

“I can listen to 5 hours of static as long as my butt’s comfortable.” – Bryan Hogge.

“Seat. I don’t listen to the radio—I play audiobooks on my headset.” – David Miller.

“Comfortable seating. My phone stops sending audio to the truck radio at random times, so I listen through my Bluetooth headphones anyway.” – Kyle Yadon.

“Seat for sure.” – Joe Belk

“Seat.” – Tommy Hemingway, Tony Zamparelli, Don Okeley, S.H. Kline, Cara Haynie

“Hands down a seat!!!!!” – Josh Cheli

“Comfy seats because these roads across the USA have gone to crap!!!!!” – Tonia Spencer

“Definitely a comfortable seat.” – Darrell Buckner

“A comfy seat!” – Sherry Long, Carter Howell, Milwood Hughes, Diane Elliott

Even Tom J Murphy chimed in with a relatable note: “My wife always wanted a better seat.”

And for drivers like TruknSam LtZion, it’s about the full experience: “Both but seat first, sound system second, then ice cold AC for sure down here in the South.”

But Don’t Forget the Sound

That said, a lot of drivers aren’t willing to give up a solid stereo setup. For some, music is the sanity-saver on those endless roads.

“A great sound system! As for the seat, I’m good with my $250 Purple seat cushion and memory foam lumbar support. The stock seat doesn’t matter to me.” – Joseph Clayson.

“You know I wanna be comfy on the long haul but I also gotta be rockin’ proper lol!” – Paul Mercer.

“I would think a comfy seat, but the tunes might make you forget about it.” – 287 Truck Parking

And let’s be honest—sometimes, it’s about what you can get. Donald Pearrell reminded us, “When I was a driver, I didn’t have either until I installed a radio in my truck.”

The Call for Both

Several drivers made it clear: why choose when you can have both?

“Both rely on distance to be traveled.” – Dan Rowland

“Both, especially an air ride seat set on a slide. Wish we had ’em in the old B-61s and B-64s.” – Butch Thompson Mairose

“Both.” – Ted Stockton, David Sona, Ken Mayer

And leave it to Smart Trucking to sum it up perfectly: “Oh gee, spoil us, let us have both!”

The Bottom Line

While a few drivers lean toward the thrill of great audio, the majority agree: comfort rules the road. Whether it’s memory foam add-ons, air ride seats, or just plain personal preference, the seat is where it all starts. Because if you’re not sitting right, nothing else matters—no matter how good the music sounds.

Still, there’s no denying that the right playlist (or audiobook) can make a long haul feel a little shorter.

Helping truckers rest, refuel, and save on the road just got easier. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has launched the Recharge with Wyndham program, designed to reward truck drivers who work tirelessly to keep the economy moving. With new benefits like double Wyndham Rewards points, elevated loyalty status, and special partnerships, drivers can now enjoy increased comfort, savings, and convenience during their time off.

“Truckers are an essential part of the workforce, and we know their time is valuable, both on the road and off,” said Angie Gadwood, Senior Vice President of Global Sales at Wyndham. “With the launch of Recharge with Wyndham, we’re helping drivers put their safety and rest first while making it easier than ever to build up points toward their next free stay—whether that’s a weekend away with the family or an overnight pitstop as they ready for the journey ahead.”

Prioritizing Rest for Truckers

Truckers in the U.S. and Canada play a vital role in supply chains, but ensuring adequate rest is critical, as mandated by hours-of-service regulations. These require truckers to take a 34-hour or 36-hour reset, respectively, to recharge for the week ahead.

Through Recharge with Wyndham, drivers have access to:

Double Wyndham Rewards Points on every qualified stay, which can earn up to two free nights annually.

Wyndham Rewards Gold Membership, offering perks like room upgrades, late checkout, and more.

Thousands of hotels globally under trusted brands including Days Inn by Wyndham, Super 8 by Wyndham, and La Quinta by Wyndham, ensuring there’s a convenient option just around the corner.

“When it’s time to rest, they need more than just a place to sleep—they need comfort, convenience, and value,” Wyndham stated in its official announcement.

Additional Savings via Hotels4Truckers

Wyndham has teamed up with Hotels4Truckers to enhance the benefits for truck drivers further. Drivers who book through the Hotels4Truckers platform (via the website or mobile app) can enjoy 15% off the best available rate on qualified stays for a limited time (terms and conditions apply).

The Hotels4Truckers platform offers added convenience by enabling drivers to search for and book over 2,000 Wyndham properties that are specifically designed to accommodate tractor-trailers up to 75 feet in length. Additionally, drivers can still take full advantage of their Recharge by Wyndham perks, such as double points and exclusive rewards.

“After a long day on the road, it’s time to refuel more than just the truck,” said Dan Fuller, president and founder of Hotels4Truckers. “With Wyndham, Hotels4Truckers members can recharge with a comfortable place to stay that doesn’t break the bank. Even better? With points, status, parking, easy bookings, and more, their stays go further, making life on the road easier and my time off more rewarding.”

Unlocking Access to Recharge with Wyndham

To start benefiting from the Recharge with Wyndham program, drivers or their companies need to secure a pre-negotiated rate with Wyndham. From there, enrollment is easy:

Visit WyndhamBusiness.com to set up an account.

Once registered, visit WyndhamRewards.com/Truckers to activate your Recharge benefits.

Wyndham’s Recharge program is yet another way the company is demonstrating its commitment to supporting one of the most vital yet underappreciated professions. By offering truckers a way to rest, save, and earn rewards, Wyndham is making life on the road just a little bit easier for those who keep the world moving.

There’s an exciting change happening in the trucking world, and it’s all thanks to Truck Park Management (TPM). They’ve come out with their new Trucklots software and app—a tool that’s making life on the road easier for truck drivers and fleet operators by offering real-time parking reservations and smarter lot management.

Why Choose Trucklots?

TPM’s focus is all about making the driver’s journey better. Danny Loe, CEO, puts it simply: “We want to solve the never-ending issues truckers face with sparse and unreliable parking spots. We aim to make things safer, ensure rules are followed, and bring comfort through top-notch amenities.”

Rooted in Little Rock, Arkansas, TPM is stepping up to tackle the big problems truck drivers face. They’re doing this with a smart reservation-based parking system that stretches across the U.S. It’s backed by software that helps manage lots better, along with developing loads with great amenities and offering property services for those who own truck yards.

Teaming Up for Expansion

A boost of $15 million from FoxDen Capital, a local investor, and major players in the industry means TPM can really grow. This funding is a big deal because it helps TPM to buy, build, and run truck parking facilities that go above and beyond what’s out there today.

Get to Know the Trucklots Software & App

The Trucklots software and app are central to TPM’s vision for the future. It’s designed so it’s easy for truckers to find and book safe parking spots with no hassle, improving the whole process from booking to check-out. Beyond Trucklots, TPM is all about supporting truckers with services like overnight and long-term parking with reservations and comprehensive lot management. This blend of services brings great value to everyone involved—from truckers to carriers and logistics crews.

Creating Parking Areas with Amenities That Matter

“One of the standout features of TPM will be developing and managing highly amenitized parking lots,” the company said in the release. “These lots range from fifteen to thirty acres in size with upwards of 500 parking spots at each location, making it a scalable solution for trucking companies of all sizes. Some of the types of amenities are to later include a secure space for showers, lounge and kitchen area amenities, fitness facilities, laundry, health clinics, a pet wash and more”

Looking to the Future

TPM has a bold vision ahead—to build the biggest truck parking network in the country. Over the next five years, they’ve set their sights on managing 200-300 sites located along all the major roads and highways, creating a truly national network.
