Flatbed drivers work long hours securing irregular loads in rain, wind, and darkness. Falls from trailer heights and cargo shifts create real risks that can wipe out your week and your paycheck. Good gear tackles these problems directly while cutting time at every dock or shipper.

Federal safety records show 4,587 securement violations yearly, most tied to injuries that proper equipment prevents. Flatbed jobs demand full compliance with 49 CFR 393 standards for every load. These tools deliver proven results that keep you hauling steady.

Ladders and Boots for Safe Deck Access

Falls account for 32% of trucker injuries per Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Flatbed haulers face constant exposure to climbing uneven freight without a stable footing at the shippers’.

A telescoping aluminum ladder rated 375 pounds gives wide rungs and grip feet for secure footing on every climb. It eliminates jumping or stretching to reach tarp edges. Composite toe boots with slip-resistant soles and ankle support grip wet decks where regular shoes fail.

You complete pre-trip inspections faster while avoiding sprains that bench good drivers.

Edge Protectors and Tarps That Hold Through Wind

Sharp freight corners wear through straps fast, causing cargo movement linked to 1,200 crashes annually. Roadside inspections catch these failures and hurt your safety score.

Rubber edge protectors rated 3,000 pounds working load wrap corners to distribute tension evenly. They preserve full strap strength through long runs. Heavy-duty vinyl tarps with D-rings every 18 inches cover completely while allowing airflow against moisture buildup.

This setup withstands 40-mile-per-hour crosswinds so you roll without emergency repacks.

Headlamps and Deck Lights for Night Checks

Regulations require securement checks every three hours or 150 miles, but darkness hides slack that leads to rollovers. Late shippers make visibility essential.

A 600-lumen rechargeable LED headlamp works hands-free with adjustable beams to spot chain wear clearly. Magnetic clip-on deck lights cover the full trailer footprint fast. Class 2 reflective vests with complete strips keep forklifts and traffic from missing you.
You verify everything in 90 seconds, even after sunset, staying fully compliant.

Maintenance That Keeps Gear Reliable

Worn equipment doubles violation risks during audits and stops. Simple care makes quality tools last through hundreds of loads.
Inspect straps for frays, test ladder hinges, and check tarp seams before every trip. Air out wet coverings after hauls and store everything dry. Replace edge protectors after 40 loads or visible wear.

Drivers who maintain like professionals collect clean inspections and stay working.

Search “flatbed jobs near me,” “flatbed jobs,” “flatbed cdl jobs,” “flatbed companies near me,” and “companies hiring flatbed drivers” on Truckdriversus.com to find carriers valuing equipped haulers.

Bridgestone Americas has introduced the Firestone FS592 steer tire, designed to help truck drivers get more miles, improve durability, and reduce downtime. Built as the successor to the FS591, this tire is made for both long-haul and regional trucking operations.

The FS592 comes in four sizes, is EPA SmartWay certified, and features Bridgestone’s next-generation ENLITEN technology. With an extra 32nd of tread depth and a wider footprint, it delivers more removal miles than the previous model.

According to Bridgestone, “The FS592 will officially replace the FS591 and builds upon its predecessor’s reputation for durability with 17% longer life. On average, it will deliver 18,000 more miles than its predecessor; a casing engineered with the company’s next-generation ENLITEN technology to deliver added durability, greater retreadability, and improved rolling resistance; and defense grooves and an optimized shoulder rib to help control wear balance and combat against tearing.”

The tire also features a five-rib tread design to ensure even wear across different road conditions, helping drivers maintain safe handling while extending the life of their tires.

For truckers, this means fewer stops for tire maintenance, more predictable wear, and longer-lasting performance on both highways and regional routes.

Truckstop.com has added a new tool called Private Loads to its platform, aiming to make the freight matching process smoother for both brokers and carriers. The update brings private and public loads into one place, helping reduce the time drivers spend searching and making it easier for brokers to connect with carriers they already trust.

“We understand the daily pressures brokers face to find trusted capacity quickly and the frustration and lost time carriers experience switching between public and private loads,” said Scott Moscrip, founder and CEO of Truckstop.com. “By bringing private and public loads together, we’re not just adding a feature; we’re delivering a critical solution that enhances trust, boosts efficiency, and drives profitability for everyone in the freight ecosystem, right when they need it most.”

With this change, brokers can share freight with their pre-vetted networks directly on Truckstop’s load board, without needing to switch systems. If needed, they can also open the load to the wider network of verified carriers with a single step.

For carriers, this means less time jumping between emails, phone calls, and different boards. Approved drivers can now see private offers from brokers they work with right next to public listings—everything in one place.

Instead of wasting time trying to track down the right load, drivers can focus more on what matters: staying on the road and getting paid. And for brokers, it’s a way to stay connected with their carrier network without slowing down the process.

Despite today’s market being one of the toughest stretches in recent memory, a new survey shows that a growing number of truck drivers are feeling hopeful about what’s ahead — and much of that optimism is being driven by technology.

According to a recent Truckstop.com survey of more than 500 U.S.-based freight carriers, 60% of drivers say they’re feeling positive about the future of the industry. And it’s not just wishful thinking — drivers are pointing to real improvements thanks to tools that are finally starting to lighten the load.

From AI-powered route planning to better fraud protection, truckers are seeing the upside of newer tech in their daily work. Decision-making is becoming quicker, more accurate, and a lot less stressful. That means less second-guessing on dispatches, fewer headaches from scams, and smoother trip planning overall.

“What we found is that carriers are adopting technology faster than ever, and they’re seeing the results,” said Todd Waldron, vice-president of carrier experience. “From stronger fraud prevention to smarter routing, tools like the ones we’re building are giving carriers more confidence and control over their operations.”

Younger drivers are especially leaning in. Nearly 70% of all respondents — and 79% of those under 35 — say they’re comfortable using the latest tech tools. That includes everything from electronic logging devices (ELDs) and AI-based dispatch tools to advanced telematics and predictive maintenance systems that help catch problems before they sideline a rig.

When asked what’s going to shape the next five years in trucking, three things rose to the top: fuel prices, freight availability, and — you guessed it — technology. AI, in particular, is expected to bring the most impact to route optimization, dispatch efficiency, and maintenance planning.

In a job where every minute and mile count, these tools aren’t just bells and whistles anymore — they’re turning into essentials. And for many drivers, that’s a step in the right direction.

For independent truck drivers and small fleet owners, relying on just one load board can limit opportunities and increase downtime. Freight availability, rates, and competition vary widely by region and season, so many drivers find success by using multiple load boards together. By combining national platforms with regional and app-based tools, drivers can stay loaded, reduce empty miles, and boost their earnings. Here’s how stacking load boards helps drivers work smarter and keep moving.

Why Use Multiple Load Boards?

Each load board has its unique strengths, and no single platform can consistently deliver the best loads or rates all the time. For example, DAT is well-known for its massive freight network and detailed rate analytics, making it a favorite for drivers needing broad, national coverage. Truckstop offers strong filtering and broker reviews, helping drivers find specialized freight like flatbeds or refrigerated loads.

Amazon Relay provides regional contract blocks and trailer-supplied loads through an easy-to-use app, which is perfect for drivers seeking consistent volume in specific areas. Uber Freight and Convoy emphasize quick, app-driven bookings with upfront pricing, making them attractive for tech-savvy carriers looking for fast spot loads. Finally, Trucker Path stands out as a multifunctional tool that blends load search with real-time parking, fuel prices, and routing, helping drivers plan their trips smarter.

Building Your Load Board Stack

Most experienced drivers start with a core load board like DAT or Truckstop to scan a wide variety of freight. Layering Amazon Relay on top provides access to regional contract loads and quick turnarounds with trailer-included options, which can be a game changer for keeping schedules full. Adding Uber Freight and Convoy apps brings the flexibility to grab spot loads when you’re near major freight hubs, while Trucker Path helps fill in logistics gaps, offering parking spots, fuel prices, and routing advice along the way.

When freight markets soften or rates drop, this diversified approach helps reduce downtime and deadhead miles. It also broadens the opportunities to find better-paying loads by comparing offers across platforms.

Timing and Smart Searching Matter

To make the most of multiple load boards, set up real-time alerts on your primary platforms like DAT and Truckstop. These notifications let you jump on prime loads as soon as they hit the market. Using filters effectively—such as setting minimum rate-per-mile thresholds or targeting specific equipment types—saves time by cutting out low-profit gigs.

Many drivers note that loads posted early in the day on platforms like Amazon Relay may initially have lower rates, but these can increase throughout the day if they remain unclaimed, especially during busy seasons like summer or the holidays. Refreshing your searches strategically helps you catch these better-paying loads before others do.

Balancing Contract Blocks and Spot Loads

Amazon Relay offers both contract blocks—allowing you to schedule a set of loads in advance for steady income—and spot loads for added flexibility. Combining these with spot loads found on DAT, Uber Freight, or Convoy lets drivers balance predictable revenue with the chance to capitalize on higher spot rates when market conditions allow.

What About Rates and Market Realities?

Rates fluctuate based on many factors: seasonality, region, freight demand, and competition. Public driver forums and market reports show that Amazon Relay rates can sometimes start lower compared to other boards, particularly during softer market periods. However, during peak demand months like December or major sales events, rates often improve significantly.

Platforms like DAT provide regular market rate data across lanes, allowing drivers to compare and pick the best-paying loads. Using multiple boards gives you a broader view and helps you avoid accepting underpaid runs.

Understanding Requirements and Compliance

Before you can start booking, each load board has specific requirements. Amazon Relay typically requires you to have active DOT authority for at least 180 days, a valid MC number, insurance coverage, and a good safety rating from FMCSA. DAT and Truckstop are generally open to authorized carriers but offer additional features like broker credit scores and rate analytics on paid plans. Uber Freight and Convoy usually require basic carrier documentation and a clean safety record, with an online onboarding process.

Keeping your paperwork and compliance in order isn’t just a formality—it’s essential to stay eligible and trusted across all platforms.

Creating a System That Works for You

Here’s a practical approach many owner-operators and small fleets use:

Subscribe to DAT One or Truckstop to access broad freight opportunities.

Register for Amazon Relay to access regional contract blocks and trailer-included loads.

Download Uber Freight and Convoy apps for quick, flexible spot loads.

Use Trucker Path for real-time trip planning, parking, and fuel updates.

Set up alerts and filters on all platforms to target profitable freight.

Track your miles, wait times, and payment schedules to manage cash flow.

Review your load board mix monthly to adapt to changing market conditions.

Stacking load boards isn’t just a smart strategy—it’s critical to staying competitive and profitable. No single platform can guarantee steady, high-paying freight every day. By diversifying your load sources with tools like DAT, Amazon Relay, Uber Freight, and others, you stay ahead of market swings, reduce downtime, and maximize earnings.

Truck Parking Club has rolled out its free, mobile-activated access control system, offering a seamless and innovative solution for property owners managing truck parking facilities.

“We’re working to make the experience as seamless as possible for both Trucker Members and Property Members,” said Evan Shelley, co-founder, CEO of Truck Parking Club. “Property Members get modern access controls at zero cost, while Trucker Members never have to worry about forgotten codes at 2 AM.”

Simplified Access at No Cost

The new system allows Trucker Members to open gated property entrances directly through the Truck Parking Club mobile app or website. Designed for convenience, this technology only requires a quick bolt-on to existing gates and is completely free for Property Members. That means no upfront installation costs or ongoing subscription fees.

Now operational at OTR Truck Parking in Midland, Texas, the system eliminates the need for access codes, cards, or manual check-ins. Instead, Trucker Members simply press a button in the app to gain entry. The access controls utilize geolocation technology, ensuring the gate can only be activated when users have both an active reservation and physical presence at the property.

The company plans to expand the system to additional select locations soon, with dozens more Property Member facilities in the pipeline.

A Game-Changer for Drivers

“Drivers love it – press a button, the gate opens,” said Andrew Jones, owner of OTR Truck Parking in Midland and vice president of property member optimization at Truck Parking Club. He added, “Getting free access controls that work with my existing gates was a no-brainer.”

This system further exemplifies the Truck Parking Club’s commitment to offering practical and straightforward solutions for both Trucker Members and Property Members. By eliminating unnecessary complexities, the platform aims to streamline operations and improve the parking experience for all stakeholders.

Stay tuned as Truck Parking Club expands this innovative service to more locations, providing an effortless access experience for truck drivers and property owners alike.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has developed and introduced the GPA Trucker mobile app, a cutting-edge tool designed to simplify and optimize the trucking process at the Port of Savannah terminals. This initiative is aimed at creating a smoother, faster, and more efficient experience for truck drivers.

With the GPA Trucker app, drivers gain access to critical information at their fingertips, enabling them to save valuable time, streamline paperwork, and stay informed with alerts such as updated gate hours essential for daily planning. For added convenience, the app features advanced security measures, allowing users to log in via facial recognition or fingerprint technology.

Streamlining operations for 14,000 plus daily moves

The Port of Savannah processes between 14,000 and 16,000 gate moves daily, operating from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Garden City Terminal boasts truck turn times of approximately 35 minutes for single moves and 53 minutes for dual moves, such as delivering an export and picking up an import.

“At GPA, we see drivers as our front-line customers, and we are always working to provide a superior customer experience,” GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch said. “Helping truckers solve problems before they arrive at our gates improves overall efficiency for them and for the cargo owners who choose Georgia Ports.”

Simplifying container transactions

The app’s primary goal is to enhance the entire container transaction process. Through the GPA’s system, drivers utilize PINs (valid for 72 hours) to track container movements. Upon arrival at the terminal gate, drivers input the PIN to obtain a physical ticket indicating the container’s pickup or drop-off location. Now, the GPA Trucker app offers a digital version of the ticket, which drivers can save on their devices or send to their trucking companies.

Looking ahead, the app will evolve to include push notifications, enabling drivers to receive digital tickets automatically, without needing to search within the app.

Additional features to save time and improve efficiency

The GPA Trucker app also helps drivers avoid unnecessary trips. For example, the app notifies users if a PIN has expired for a container move or if an export container has been assigned to a different vessel. Furthermore, the app guides drivers by indicating the closest terminal entry gate for their containers and sending updates like weather changes or gate hour adjustments.

Upcoming updates to the app will include navigation integration with platforms such as Waze and Apple Maps, which will assist drivers in efficiently locating containers within terminal premises.

The GPA Trucker mobile app exemplifies the Georgia Ports Authority’s commitment to improving the trucking experience and enhancing overall operational efficiency. By leveraging technology, the Port of Savannah is setting new standards for streamlined logistics and driver convenience.

If you’ve ever navigated steep descents in your rig, you’re likely familiar with the distinctive roar of the Jake Brake. But have you ever wondered, why is it called a Jake Brake? Let’s dive into the history and mechanics of this essential trucking tool.

The Genesis of the Jake Brake

The term “Jake Brake” stems from Jacobs Vehicle Systems, the automotive innovator who revolutionized commercial vehicle braking in 1961. This game-changing technology was conceptualized by Clessie Cummins, founder of Cummins Inc. This newfound braking innovation forever reshaped the trucking industry by offering drivers greater control over their rigs, especially on challenging terrains.

How the Jake Brake Works

The Jake Brake acts as a compression release engine brake. When engaged, it manipulates the exhaust valves, opening them at the peak of the compression stroke to release compressed air. This mechanism transforms your engine into a powerful air compressor, effectively reducing the vehicle’s speed without over-relying on traditional wheel brakes.

Not only does this extend brake lifespan, but it also offers a smoother and safer descent, especially on steep or lengthy downgrades.

That Iconic Sound

The signature “brrrrap” you hear when a truck uses a Jake Brake is more than just noise—it’s the sound of compressed air escaping the engine’s cylinders. While it serves as a reassuring sign for drivers who understand its value, it’s also led to noise ordinances in many urban areas seeking to curb its auditory impact.

Advancements in Engine Braking Technologies

Fast forward to 2022, Cummins Inc. acquired Jacobs Vehicle Systems, signaling a new era of innovation in engine braking technology. By fostering advanced integration, the Jake Brake continues to mature, offering broader applications and improved efficiency tailored to today’s trucking demands.

A Name that Honored Innovation

Ultimately, the nickname “Jake Brake” pays tribute to the trailblazing Jacobs Vehicle Systems. Understanding its origins and engineering marvel offers a richer appreciation for how impactful this innovation has been—not just in transforming heavy-duty trucking but in setting benchmarks for vehicle safety and performance.

The trucking industry often thrives on predictability. Familiar routes, consistent loads, and knowing your vehicle inside out are all part of the job. However, when predictability evolves into complacency, it can hinder your professional growth and even compromise safety on the road. To elevate your career as a truck driver, it’s crucial to remain focused, adaptable, and engaged. Here’s how you can combat complacency and make the most of your career.

Why Routine Can Be Risky

Routine may feel reassuring, but when left unchecked, it can hold you back in significant ways:

Safety Slips: Repetition can lead to skipping essential safety checks or missing potential hazards.

Limited Growth: Avoiding new challenges may stop you from acquiring important skills or pursuing advanced roles.

Higher Accident Risk: Overconfidence in routine tasks can cause lapses in judgment, resulting in costly mistakes.

Breaking out of the comfort of routine starts with a commitment to actively shape your career.

Steps to Stay Engaged and Push Your Career Forward

Set Clear Career Milestones

What’s your end goal in trucking? Whether it’s becoming an owner-operator, earning specialized certifications, or stepping into management, having clear objectives gives you purpose and direction. These career aspirations help you stay motivated and on track.

Keep Learning

The trucking industry is always evolving with new technologies, regulations, and innovations in equipment. Staying ahead of the curve with refresher courses, advanced endorsements (like HazMat or Tanker), or safety training ensures you remain competitive and gain expertise that sets you apart.

Take on Diverse Challenges

Don’t limit yourself to familiar routes or straightforward loads. Branch out by tackling oversized loads, cross-border shipments, or sensitive freight like refrigerated goods. Expanding your repertoire can lead to higher earnings and make your workload more exciting.

Stay Updated on Industry Trends

From electric vehicle adoption to changes in Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, staying informed keeps you agile. Follow reliable sources such as industry publications or organizations like the FMCSA and ATA to keep a finger on the pulse of what’s next.

Prioritize Safety Always

Safety isn’t just a best practice—it’s a hallmark of professionalism. Conduct detailed pre-trip and post-trip inspections, secure your loads carefully, and follow traffic laws diligently. Showing a commitment to safety builds reliability and trust with employers and peers.

Why Staying Proactive Matters

When you focus on combating complacency, the rewards extend far beyond the individual trip.

Earn More: Specialized certifications or challenging hauls often come with higher pay rates.

Job Stability: Companies value drivers who are adaptable, dependable, and always improving.

Career Growth: A well-rounded skill set opens doors to exciting roles such as fleet manager, owner-operator, or mentor.

Fulfillment: Taking on new challenges, mastering your craft, and achieving milestones lead to greater satisfaction and pride in your work.

Tools to Help You Stay Sharp

Truck Driver Apps: Use apps like Trucker Path for navigation, GasBuddy to save on fuel, or KeepTruckin for compliance tracking to make your workday more efficient.

Networking Opportunities: Engage with other professionals by attending truck shows, webinars, or driver meetups to share insights and stay inspired.

Mental Engagement: Combat long hours with audiobooks, podcasts, or mindful practices to keep your mind active and focused.

Avoiding complacency means more than just getting through your daily hauls—it’s about building a rewarding, forward-moving career in trucking. Whether you’re steering toward leadership roles, refining your skills, or seeking personal accomplishments, the key is staying intentional about your growth.

The road ahead offers countless opportunities—but only if you’re ready to take the wheel and drive toward success.
