Truck drivers running through western Ohio have a new stop to add to their route. Wawa has officially opened a new travel center just off Interstate 75 in Lima, giving drivers another option for fuel, parking, and a quick reset during long runs.

The location sits at Exit 20, a well-traveled stretch for regional and long-haul freight moving through the Midwest. For fleets and owner-operators, that placement matters. Easy on and off access can make a difference when you are watching your clock or trying to line up your next break.

Built with Drivers in Mind

This is not a standard convenience store setup. Wawa designed this travel center format to better serve professional drivers alongside everyday travelers.

At the Lima site, drivers will find:

A high-speed diesel fuel court built to handle larger volumes

CAT scales available on-site

Free parking for tractor-trailers

Clean restrooms and a pet relief area

These are the basic+ drivers to look for when planning stops, especially in busy freight corridors where parking can be limited.

Part of a Growing Travel Center Push

The Lima opening marks the third travel center Wawa has rolled out under this newer format. The company is steadily expanding beyond its traditional footprint, adding locations that can handle both passenger vehicles and commercial traffic.

Other travel centers are already operating in Hope Mills, North Carolina, and Richmond, Indiana, signaling a broader push into areas where truck traffic and regional travel overlap.

For industry stakeholders, this kind of expansion reflects ongoing competition in the truck stop and travel plaza space. More options can improve access to parking and services, but it also raises expectations for speed, cleanliness, and overall driver experience.

A Focus on Convenience and Consistency

Wawa says the goal is to combine its food and beverage offerings with the kind of fuel access and layout that works for larger vehicles.

“Wawa’s 60-year history includes innovating and evolving our store design to meet the changing needs of customers, said Brian Schaller, president of Wawa. “In less than one year, we opened three locations that provide the convenience of fuel and Wawa’s fresh food and beverages to local customers, travelers, and professional drivers.”

What This Means on the Road

For drivers, another reliable stop along I-75 can help with trip planning, especially on routes where timing and available parking can shift quickly.

For fleets, it adds another consistent option for fueling and breaks, which can help with route efficiency and driver satisfaction.

As more companies invest in upgraded travel centers, the expectation is simple. Drivers want fast fuel, available parking, and a place that makes it easy to get back on the road without losing time. Locations like this are aiming to check those boxes while keeping up with the demands of modern trucking.

Education support is included with each opening.

Pilot tied both grand openings to community giving through its Miles of Good program, with education as the focus.

“We believe in working shoulder-to-shoulder with the communities we serve,” Pilot said. “Through Pilot’s giving program, Miles of Good, we have championed education by donating to hundreds of public schools across North America.”

To mark the store openings, Pilot donated $20,000 to Chicopee Public Schools in Massachusetts and $20,000 to the Holmes District School Board serving students in Ponce de Leon, Florida.

“This funding helps ensure students have what they need to inspire curiosity, strengthen learning, and create opportunities to help them thrive,” Pilot said. “By funding public schools, Pilot is proud to support the next generation.”

Built for the road ahead

Pilot said these openings are part of a broader effort to expand parking availability, improve amenities, and offer consistent stops along major freight corridors.

“These two new store openings are part of our commitment to give you more quality amenities, more convenience, and more reasons to take a comfortable break from the road,” Pilot said. “Whether you’re a professional driver supporting America’s supply chain or a family heading out on an adventure, Pilot is here to be your trusty wingman. See you out here.”

Truck drivers who rely on Washington’s busy Interstate 5 now have a new tool to ease one of their biggest headaches: finding safe and available parking.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced the rollout of its Truck Parking Information Management System (TPIMS), a technology-driven program designed to provide drivers with real-time updates and predictive insights on parking availability at rest areas and weigh stations along I-5. Drivers can use the system to plan their stops as far as four hours in advance.

“This helps ensure that truck drivers can find safe parking and that existing truck parking spaces are used to their full capacity,” the agency said in its announcement. WSDOT added that about 75% of truck drivers in Washington struggle to locate safe parking at least once per week, underscoring the importance of the new system.

A Collaborative Effort

The development of TPIMS was made possible through a partnership with the University of Washington’s STAR Lab, along with Drivewyze and ParkerTruck. Drivers can access the parking details either through in-cab displays or mobile apps, making it easier to find reliable spaces while staying on schedule.

For those looking to tap into the system, both vendor websites provide clear instructions on how to get started.

Where It’s Available Now

As of September, TPIMS is active at several key locations along I-5, including:

Gee Creek Rest Areas (northbound at milepost 11 and southbound at milepost 12)

Maytown Rest Area (milepost 93)

Fort Lewis Weigh Station (milepost 117)

SeaTac Weigh Station (milepost 140)

Smokey Point Rest Areas (northbound and southbound, milepost 207)

Custer Rest Areas (northbound at milepost 267 and southbound at milepost 269)

By the end of September, the Toutle River Rest Area (northbound, milepost 54) and the Ridgefield Weigh Station (milepost 15) will also be added. WSDOT plans to expand the system to additional I-5 locations through 2026.

A Call for Driver Feedback

WSDOT is encouraging truck drivers to help shape the program by filling out a short online survey. Feedback will play a key role in refining the system as it grows. Drivers can also subscribe through the agency’s website for email updates on future truck parking initiatives.

Federal Support Behind the Project

Funding for TPIMS comes from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant program, backed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

By connecting technology with the daily challenges truckers face, Washington state is working to improve safety, reduce stress, and maximize parking resources along one of the nation’s busiest freight corridors.

Truck drivers moving through Arizona may soon have an easier time finding safe parking spots along Interstate 10 thanks to a newly launched AI-powered tracking system.

On Thursday, Aug. 14, the California-based technology company Streetline announced the rollout of its truck parking availability system. Instead of relying on costly in-ground sensors, the system uses “strategically mounted AI-based cameras” to monitor vehicles entering and exiting rest areas and designated truck parking lots. The cameras calculate in real time how many spaces are open and then share that information across digital highway signs, a mobile app, and Arizona’s traveler information sites.

Streetline explained that its program relies on advanced algorithms that learn and adapt over time. “The TPAS (truck parking availability system) leverages machine learning-based video analytics to dynamically detect and analyze parking occupancy in real time, regardless of time of day or weather, ensuring truck drivers receive timely and reliable updates on space availability,” the company stated.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has already installed the system at several eastbound I-10 rest areas and plans to expand coverage to the westbound lanes in the future.

This rollout comes as part of a broader initiative to tackle the state’s long-standing truck parking shortage. In December 2023, ADOT introduced its Truck Parking Implementation Plan, which included proposals for three new parking facilities and expansion at select rest areas. When complete, those efforts are expected to add 842 spaces across Arizona.

Streetline noted that its technology is not unique to Arizona. Similar systems are already in place in California, Florida, Kentucky, Nevada, and Washington. The company emphasized the safety and sustainability benefits, stating the system will help “reduce truck driver fatigue (and) mitigate illegal shoulder parking and unnecessary idling, all contributing to safer highways and more sustainable operations.”

In a broader sense, Streetline sees this as part of a national shift in infrastructure. “The multi-state deployment that includes Arizona represents a proven model for other states that are seeking to automate and modernize their transit infrastructure,” the company said. “Streetline remains committed to delivering innovative, scalable, and affordable solutions to help keep the nation’s roadways operating smarter and safer.”

Truck drivers know parking is a scarce resource, but simply knowing where spots might be available isn’t enough anymore. With new technology, data integration, and planning methods evolving fast, experienced drivers can take advantage of truck parking data systems in more strategic ways to save time, reduce stress, and stay compliant with Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.

This article goes beyond the basics, exploring how drivers can combine available tools with strategic planning for better parking outcomes.

Integrating Truck Parking Data with Route Planning Tools

Many modern routing apps now offer built-in truck parking information sourced from national databases and crowdsourced reports. Using these apps proactively during trip planning lets drivers:

Identify parking options aligned with delivery schedules, reducing idle time spent hunting for spots.

Optimize routes around available rest areas or truck stops, especially on tight delivery windows.

Set parking alerts for upcoming stops to avoid last-minute decisions when hours are running low.

Apps like Trucker Path and DAT Load Board have integrated parking availability alongside load and route planning features, helping drivers plan multiple trip elements simultaneously.

Leveraging Telematics and Connected Vehicle Data

Some fleets use telematics systems that provide real-time data not only on vehicle performance but also on nearby truck parking availability. Drivers linked to such fleets can:

Receive proactive parking suggestions based on current location, remaining drive time, and parking occupancy rates.

Avoid congested rest stops, as telematics analyzes usage trends to recommend less crowded locations.

Communicate directly with dispatch using integrated systems to coordinate stops and breaks efficiently.

According to a recent FHWA report on connected vehicle technology, this integration is expanding rapidly, with pilot programs showing improved driver compliance and reduced unsafe parking behaviors.

Using Weather and Traffic Data Together With Parking Info

Parking availability can change quickly due to weather or traffic delays. Experienced drivers combine truck parking data with:

Weather apps provide alerts for storms or heavy snow, allowing early rerouting to parking with adequate shelter or safety features.

Real-time traffic updates to anticipate delays that impact driving hours and parking timing.

Platforms like MyRadar Weather Radar and Google Maps can be used alongside parking apps to create a comprehensive situational picture.

Planning Personal Breaks Around Parking Patterns

Studies show that parking spots fill and empty at predictable times, often linked to driver habits and delivery schedules. Drivers who monitor these trends:

Plan breaks during off-peak parking hours, reducing wait time and improving rest quality.

Use parking occupancy heat maps available in some apps to spot less crowded times and places.

Research published by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) (2024) highlights that strategic timing of breaks based on parking data correlates with better HOS compliance and driver wellness.

The Growing Role of Crowdsourced Data and Community Reporting

While sensor-based data is still limited in scope, crowdsourced information from other drivers fills gaps effectively:

Apps that allow drivers to report parking availability or closures in real time help keep data fresh.

Participating in these communities not only benefits the network but also gives drivers an early heads-up on unexpected lot conditions.

Regularly updating parking apps or joining driver forums ensures access to the latest crowd-verified parking status.

For drivers looking to go beyond basic parking searches, combining truck parking data systems with routing apps, telematics, weather and traffic info, and community reporting creates a powerful toolkit. This layered approach helps maximize driving time, reduce uncertainty, and maintain compliance in a profession where every minute counts.

Keeping up with the latest tech integrations and developing habits around data-driven planning makes a measurable difference on the road.

Truck drivers passing through Arizona can now access up-to-the-minute information about available parking spots at rest areas along Interstate 10, thanks to a new system designed to improve safety and efficiency.

On Monday, January 27, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) officially launched the I-10 Truck Parking Availability System. This innovative system aims to “enhance safety and help empower the economy” by sharing detailed, real-time updates on the number of open truck parking spaces at upcoming rest stops.

How It Works

Each rest area is equipped with monitoring technology that tracks the number of available truck parking spaces in real time. This data is then displayed on electronic signs positioned along Interstate 10, upstream from the rest areas. Additionally, truck drivers can access this information through the Arizona Traveler Information website and third-party apps frequently used by truckers.

Where It’s Available

The $2.8 million initiative covers the following rest areas along I-10 in Arizona:

Ehrenberg (mile marker 4)

Bouse Wash (mile marker 52)

Texas Canyon (mile marker 320)

San Simon (mile marker 389)

ADOT says this system helps drivers locate parking faster and more safely. A study conducted in 2020 by the I-10 Corridor Coalition revealed that 78% of truckers spend over 30 minutes searching for parking, highlighting a crucial need for tools like this.

“The real-time information provided through the Truck Parking Availability System helps truckers get the rest they need without having to use places that aren’t designated for truck parking,” stated ADOT.

Feedback from Truckers

Input from truck drivers was instrumental in developing the system. A survey launched in October by the I-10 Corridor Coalition asked drivers for insights into parking challenges along I-10, spanning California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The feedback gathered played a significant role in shaping the Truck Parking Availability System.

A Larger Plan to Tackle Parking Shortages

This initiative is just one part of a broader effort by ADOT to address Arizona’s truck parking challenges. Back in December 2023, ADOT introduced its Truck Parking Implementation Plan, which aims to create an additional 842 parking spaces statewide. This includes proposals to build three new parking areas and expand existing facilities.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has unveiled a $31 million initiative aimed at significantly enhancing truck parking availability at five strategic locations throughout the state. This ambitious project is designed to tackle one of the most pressing issues in the trucking industry—the critical shortage of safe and accessible truck parking—which plays a crucial role in driver safety and operational efficiency, according to CTDOT’s official statement.

Phase 1 Begins at Middletown Rest Area

The first step of this comprehensive initiative is already underway at the Middletown rest area on Interstate 91 northbound. This phase involves the addition of 11 new truck parking spaces, boosting capacity at the location by more than 40%. It marks just the beginning of a broader effort to address parking shortages statewide.

Long-Term Plan to Add Over 180 New Parking Spaces

CTDOT’s expansion plan aims to deliver more than 180 new truck parking spaces across multiple sites in Connecticut, including Middletown, Madison, Southington, Southbury, and Vernon—all before the decade’s end.

Currently, Connecticut offers around 420 public truck parking spaces at rest areas and service plazas. By the time this project is complete, the state’s capacity will increase to roughly 600 spaces, representing a 44% overall rise in truck parking availability.

Addressing Truckers’ Concerns

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we heard truckers loud and clear when they called for more places to safely park along state highways,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “We are excited to begin these projects to improve safety for the trucking community, who keep our economy moving.”

Praise from Industry Leaders

John Blair, President of the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut, praised the initiative, emphasizing the longstanding impact of insufficient parking on the trucking industry.

“The Motor Transport Association of CT wholeheartedly applauds Commissioner Eucalitto and the Connecticut Department of Transportation for addressing the truck parking shortage issue head on,” said Blair. “The truck parking shortage has plagued the trucking industry for decades, and the consequences of insufficient capacity are as wide-ranging as they are severe. The scarcity of truck parking spaces across the country decreases safety for all highway users, exacerbates the industry’s longstanding workforce challenges, diminishes trucking productivity, and results in unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions. The effort here in Connecticut will undoubtedly make our roads safer.”

This initiative represents a critical step forward for improving the trucking infrastructure in Connecticut. By the end of the decade, drivers will have access to expanded, safer parking options, which will not only increase roadway safety but also improve working conditions for truckers and reduce environmental harm.
