Truck drivers face ongoing challenges in finding overnight parking, especially in areas where demand is high and safe spots fill quickly. Addressing this issue requires careful planning, situational awareness, and effective use of available resources according to verified industry guidance.

Plan for Peace of Mind

Securing a spot for overnight rest begins with planning. Use truck parking apps and online reservation services to locate and book available spaces before entering high-demand corridors. Popular truck stops and travel centers often allow reservations, increasing the likelihood of finding a spot upon arrival. Planning routes around areas known for frequent shortages can conserve time and reduce stress.

Prioritize Lighting and Security Features

When selecting overnight parking, target locations that offer strong lighting, visible surveillance, and a steady flow of other trucks. Well-lit spaces with cameras or security personnel act as deterrents to theft or vandalism. Truck stops, authorized rest areas, and some retail lots typically provide enhanced security, but drivers are advised to verify amenities in advance through websites or direct phone calls.

Maintain Awareness and Secure the Cab

Drivers should routinely check their surroundings, looking for emergency exits, security stations, and potential hazards upon arrival. Trusting instincts is important; if an area feels unsafe, moving to a busier or better-monitored location is recommended. Always secure the cab, lock all doors, close windows, and store valuables out of sight before settling in. Some professional drivers recommend additional security measures, such as dash cameras and cab padlocks, for added protection.

Benefit From Community Knowledge

Many truckers seek advice from forums and driver groups to find lesser-known safe parking options. Sharing experiences about which locations are reliable for overnight parking can help prevent common mistakes and assist others facing similar challenges. Asking at shipper or receiver facilities (when permitted), checking social platforms, and networking with other drivers can uncover spots not listed on public maps.

Park Strategically and Avoid Risky Locations

Parking alongside other trucks in designated areas decreases vulnerability. Spaces away from traffic entrances, exits, or isolated lots tend to be safer. Avoid parking on highway shoulders or unapproved commercial lots, unless in emergencies. Backing into spots aids in quick departure if issues arise and can obstruct unwanted access to the trailer.

Follow Regulations and Local Guidelines

Truck drivers must respect posted parking restrictions and facility rules, which vary with location. Some truck stops impose limits on overnight duration and violating these can result in fines or towing. Checking signage and asking staff for clarification supports compliance and uninterrupted rest periods.

Safe overnight parking in crowded areas demands planning, awareness, and community insight. Leverage technology for reservations, choose well-lit authorized spots, secure the cab, and seek knowledgeable recommendations to improve safety and comfort.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is reaching out to truck drivers to gather crucial insights on the challenges related to truck parking at publicly operated rest areas.

Through its Public Truck Parking Driver Survey, ATRI is collaborating with departments of transportation in every state to identify effective strategies for increasing parking availability at public rest areas and other state-managed facilities.

The survey, which consists of 12 concise questions, invites truckers to provide input on various approaches states are using to address parking issues. These include:

Implementation of parking information systems

Repurposing state-owned properties for parking

Strategies for parking during adverse weather conditions

The findings from the survey will culminate in a report evaluating how states are currently addressing truck parking needs. It will also showcase the most effective practices for expanding parking options at public rest areas.

Dan Murray, ATRI’s Senior Vice President, emphasized the importance of driver feedback in tackling the truck parking shortage.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t make any sense to ask anyone but a truck driver what is needed to improve truck parking,” Murray shared with Land Line. “This particular ATRI survey is focused exclusively on truck parking at public rest areas. There are only 40,000 truck parking spaces at public rest areas in the U.S., based on driver feedback. States should probably double that number.”

The ongoing issue of inadequate truck parking has consistently ranked as a top concern within the industry. According to ATRI’s 2024 Top Industry Issues report, the shortage of available parking stood as the second-highest overall concern and has remained the number one issue for drivers for several years.

“On ATRI’s annual Top Industry Issues report, ‘truck parking’ has been the No. 1 issue for truck drivers in four of the last five reports,” Murray explained. “We’re hoping that real-world data can address the problem and finally move truck parking down the list.”

Truck drivers can participate in the Public Truck Parking Driver Survey and make their voices heard by completing it online here.

Truck drivers passing through Arizona can now access up-to-the-minute information about available parking spots at rest areas along Interstate 10, thanks to a new system designed to improve safety and efficiency.

On Monday, January 27, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) officially launched the I-10 Truck Parking Availability System. This innovative system aims to “enhance safety and help empower the economy” by sharing detailed, real-time updates on the number of open truck parking spaces at upcoming rest stops.

How It Works

Each rest area is equipped with monitoring technology that tracks the number of available truck parking spaces in real time. This data is then displayed on electronic signs positioned along Interstate 10, upstream from the rest areas. Additionally, truck drivers can access this information through the Arizona Traveler Information website and third-party apps frequently used by truckers.

Where It’s Available

The $2.8 million initiative covers the following rest areas along I-10 in Arizona:

Ehrenberg (mile marker 4)

Bouse Wash (mile marker 52)

Texas Canyon (mile marker 320)

San Simon (mile marker 389)

ADOT says this system helps drivers locate parking faster and more safely. A study conducted in 2020 by the I-10 Corridor Coalition revealed that 78% of truckers spend over 30 minutes searching for parking, highlighting a crucial need for tools like this.

“The real-time information provided through the Truck Parking Availability System helps truckers get the rest they need without having to use places that aren’t designated for truck parking,” stated ADOT.

Feedback from Truckers

Input from truck drivers was instrumental in developing the system. A survey launched in October by the I-10 Corridor Coalition asked drivers for insights into parking challenges along I-10, spanning California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The feedback gathered played a significant role in shaping the Truck Parking Availability System.

A Larger Plan to Tackle Parking Shortages

This initiative is just one part of a broader effort by ADOT to address Arizona’s truck parking challenges. Back in December 2023, ADOT introduced its Truck Parking Implementation Plan, which aims to create an additional 842 parking spaces statewide. This includes proposals to build three new parking areas and expand existing facilities.
