For most truck drivers, there are loads you never forget. For Michael Porter of Knight Swift Transportation, hauling the 2025 U S Capitol Christmas Tree across the country in a Kenworth T680 was one of those once-in-a-lifetime runs.

The massive Red Fir, known as the “Silver Belle,” started its journey in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada. From there, Porter took the wheel and guided the tree more than thirty seven hundred miles to Washington D C. It was the type of trip that reminds the country just how much trucking keeps traditions alive.

A Run Built on Pride

“It was an absolute honor to represent Knight Swift and the trucking community for this year’s U S Capitol Christmas Tree tour,” Porter said. “The holiday season is a special time of the year, so to have the opportunity to spread holiday cheer to communities all across our great country as we made our way to D C was truly an unforgettable experience.”

For the twelfth year in a row, Kenworth supported the annual tree program by supplying the truck. This year’s T680 featured a custom wrap celebrating the Spirit of the Silver State, complete with a sunset scene over Nevada’s forests.

From the Shop to the Open Road

Before earning his CDL, Porter spent his career turning wrenches as a mechanic. Seven years ago, he joined Knight Swift’s flatbed division, where he has spent most of his time handling oversized loads.

“I started my career in transportation as a mechanic, servicing cars and later heavy trucks, and realized I enjoyed driving big rigs more than I liked working in the shop,” Porter said. “I love being on the road, traveling the country, and the flexibility I have in my schedule working with Knight Swift. Truck drivers serve a pivotal role in our nation’s economy, and this tour is an excellent opportunity to highlight an important industry in trucking while kicking off the holiday season. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Because Porter regularly hauls extended trailers, he was a strong fit for a load this long. The tree traveled on an eighty-foot Hale trailer, which took careful planning and skilled handling at every community stop.

Moving a National Icon

“From law enforcement leading the convoy to the logistical planners and all the sponsors involved, it was truly a team effort to safely make this three thousand seven hundred mile journey across the country possible,” Porter said. “I’ve never been involved in a transport with so much attention, which added a bit of pressure, but it also made the experience that much more rewarding. Everywhere we went, people were excited, waving, and taking photos. You could really feel the pride and joy this tree brought to communities along the way.”

The Kenworth T680 used for the haul included the DigitalVision Mirror system, which gave Porter clearer visibility and helped with tight turns in crowded city stops.

“The most challenging part of the tour was navigating some of the tight city roads during the tour stops, but the truck’s DigitalVision Mirrors were really helpful in giving me a full view of my surroundings,” Porter said. “It’s impressive how far truck technology has come. I drive a T680 for Knight Swift, and it’s a very driver-friendly truck that provides a comfortable ride, performs well, and looks great.”

A Holiday Memory That Will Stick

After nearly a month on the road and thousands of people coming out to see the tree along the way, Porter says the true highlight was the sense of joy the haul brought to each stop. Now that the Silver Belle is standing tall in the nation’s capital, he plans to return with his family to watch the lighting ceremony in person.

“To cap off this tour in D C with my family, who have been so supportive and thrilled for me to have this opportunity, is so surreal,” Porter said. “This holiday season is truly one for the books, and I’ll never forget the people we met and the pride everyone showed for this tradition.”

Mack Trucks has started producing its new Pioneer model at the Lehigh Valley Operations facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania. The plant has been building Mack trucks for over 40 years and has been updated to handle the Pioneer alongside existing models.

The Pioneer was first revealed in April and represents a major step forward in Mack’s highway truck lineup. It is designed to improve aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, and driver comfort, making long-haul life easier behind the wheel.

“Starting production of the Pioneer at our Lehigh Valley facility is a proud moment for our entire team,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks. “Our skilled workforce has embraced the advanced manufacturing processes required for this next-generation truck, ensuring every Pioneer that rolls off the line meets Mack’s legendary standards for quality and durability.”

Early interest in the new truck has been strong. Jamie Hagen, owner of Hell Bent Xpress, was among the first to place orders and purchased six Pioneers.

“The time I spent in the Pioneer left me with quite an impression,” Hagen said. “I love the truck from top to bottom, inside and out. The level of efficiency and comfort this new truck brings sets a standard others will only hope to achieve. I can’t wait to have our entire fleet moving freight with happier drivers and more money to the bottom line. Once you’ve driven one, you will never want to go back to anything else.”

For drivers, the Pioneer promises improvements in day-to-day operations, featuring enhancements designed to make long trips more comfortable and less tiring. For fleet operators, it offers opportunities to improve efficiency and performance without compromising driver experience. The start of production is a notable milestone for Mack as it continues to bring new solutions to long-haul trucking.

At Daimler Truck North America’s Madras proving grounds, Western Star’s 2025 Star Nation Experience united six vocational truck operators and two participants from the gaming world for three days of intense challenges, hands-on technology, and industry camaraderie. Competitors traveled from across the U.S. and Canada to put their abilities to the test and explore the future of vocational trucking.

Real-World Skills Meet Real-World Machines

Participants climbed into the cabs of Western Star 47X and 49X models to face a series of demanding events that pushed their precision and problem-solving to the limit. The lineup included:

Backing trucks up the steep incline known as “Mount Madras”

Executing precise gravel spreads at a rock quarry

Going head-to-head in an American Truck Simulator competition

Each challenge was designed not only to assess driver skill but also to highlight the Detroit Assurance safety technology in a safe, controlled environment.

From Gamer to Trucker

Casey LaDelle, returning as a team captain, reflected on what sets the Star Nation Experience apart.

“You realize the people behind the scenes ARE the Western Star brand, and the trucks are the product of the passion for what they do.”

The event’s inclusion of gaming community members underscored how skills can transfer from simulation to real-world trucking.

Passing the Torch to the Next Generation

Last year’s champion, Tatiana DeYoung, stepped into a mentorship role for 2025, finding just as much reward in coaching as she did in competing.

“I like how I’m able to be a part of their experience and let them know what I know, and then they just take it and apply it however they would like.”

Her guidance showcased the event’s blend of competition and collaboration, giving new participants the chance to learn from proven veterans.

Honoring the Backbone of Vocational Trucking

Event lead Alex Bender Martin explained that Star Nation is more than just a competition — it’s a celebration of the people who keep vocational trucking strong.

“We really look at all the winners that are here as the backbone of the vocational industry, and we want to celebrate them. We want to bring back that camaraderie and that pride in this business.”

The three-day experience wasn’t just about winning. From behind-the-scenes tours of Daimler’s facilities to outdoor activities and fireside conversations with executives, Star Nation created a space where technology, skill, and personal connection came together.

While one team ultimately claimed the top spot, the true success of the 2025 Star Nation Experience was in the relationships built, connecting operators, cutting-edge technology, and the Western Star brand in a way that reflects the passion and pride driving the industry forward.

Mack Trucks has reintroduced its Anthem model, branding it as “the new standard of regional haul.” This relaunch positions the Anthem, originally debuted in 2017 as Mack’s over-the-road truck, to excel in a new segment following the introduction of the Pioneer model earlier this year. The reshuffling of Mack’s lineup allows the Anthem to focus on its considerable success with daycab fleets.

At a recent launch event, Fernando Couceiro, Vice President of Highway Trucks at Mack Trucks, emphasized, “This is not a facelift or a refresh. This is a brand-new truck from the ground up.” While the Anthem and Pioneer share similar styling elements and 90% parts commonality, the updates and focus for the Anthem cater specifically to regional haul requirements.

Key Features and Highlights of the New Anthem

1. Enhanced Maneuverability

The new Anthem boasts six different wheelbase options, ranging from 16 to 19 feet. A shorter 113.5-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC) length sets it apart, making it 12 inches shorter than the Pioneer and 4 inches shorter than the previous Anthem model. With an impressive 45-degree wheel cut, the truck’s turning radius improves by about 12% over prior versions.

A redesigned three-piece hood further enhances functionality, improving forward visibility by 12 feet, making urban navigation simpler and safer.

2. Fuel Efficiency Upgrades

Compared to its predecessor, the updated Anthem sees up to a 10% gain in fuel efficiency through improved aerodynamics. Key design changes include:

A revamped roof and side skirts that optimize airflow.

A deeper hood slope directing air above the one-piece windshield and roof fairing.

Additionally, the new MP13 13-liter diesel engine delivers 3% better efficiency than the outgoing MP8 model. While most aerodynamic enhancements, such as ground skirts and roof fairings, come as optional specs, they allow flexibility to suit different operational needs.

3. Comfortable Interior with Safety Enhancements

The Anthem’s cab interior sees significant upgrades:

A wider cabin space, now 9 inches broader than the previous model.

Available configurations include a day cab, 44-inch sleeper, and 64-inch sleeper.

Drivers can enjoy premium wide-base seats with optional ventilation, heating, and even massage features, while stand-up sleeper configurations provide ample headroom. On the safety side, the Anthem incorporates cutting-edge features:

A standard front airbag and Integrated Curtain Airbag (ICA) system designed to protect the driver during rollover incidents.

Advanced driver assistance systems have demonstrated a 43% reduction in near-miss incidents during controlled testing.

4. Advanced Technology for Regional Operations

Specifically geared toward urban and regional operations, the Anthem includes innovative technological upgrades:

Enhanced Safety Systems: Radar technologies detect objects, vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians in blind spots and within the truck’s path. An optional digital mirror system further enhances driver visibility.

Driver Convenience:

Through the MyMack driver app, users can pre-condition the cab, monitor tire pressures, and check fluid levels remotely.

Over-the-air software updates facilitate maintenance without disrupting operations.

Predictive maintenance reduces unplanned stops by 20%.

Integration with Mack’s GuardDog Connect offers diagnostics and automatic service alerts, reducing downtime by 37%, according to Todd Shakespeare, Mack Trucks’ Head of Leasing and Service Solution Sales.

Customization Without the Sleeper Compromise

While the Anthem won’t feature the Pioneer’s larger sleeper configurations, it shares the same interior features, finishes, and dimensions. This shared space ensures that regional haul drivers enjoy premium comfort without sacrificing practicality.

Looking Ahead

Starting this August, businesses can place orders for the new Anthem, with production slated to begin in January. With its redefined focus and region-specific enhancements, the Anthem represents a groundbreaking truck designed to balance efficiency, safety, and driver comfort for regional operations.

For operators seeking maneuverability, state-of-the-art technology, and cost savings, the Anthem is set to redefine expectations in the trucking industry.

Volvo Trucks North America has earned the prestigious Red Dot Award for its groundbreaking design of the all-new Volvo VNL, emphasizing the brand’s ability to merge aesthetics, innovation, and functionality in the trucking industry.

“When most people hear design, they think of automotive or fashion, not heavy-duty trucks. However, for our team, design plays a critical role in everything from fuel efficiency to driver comfort,” shared Brian Balicki, head of design at Volvo Trucks North America. “With the all-new Volvo VNL, we started with a blank sheet of paper and reimagined the truck from the ground up. The streamlined, wedge-shaped cab and dramatically sloped windshield are not just visually striking, they reduce aerodynamic drag and help deliver up to 10% better fuel efficiency compared to the legacy model. Inside, we transformed the driving environment and sleeper into a space that feels more like a home away from home.”

Cutting-edge redesign and features

Revealed in January 2024, the all-new Volvo VNL represents six years of intensive research and represents a complete rethinking of the long-haul truck.

Truck tech just took a big step forward—Mack Trucks has launched the MyMack app, designed to give drivers remote access to their Mack Pioneer highway truck. The app brings key vehicle info and select controls right to your phone, making it easier to stay on top of your rig whether you’re in the cab or not.

Built to work with the all-new Mack Pioneer—first revealed in April—this new app is all about making life on the road more efficient, comfortable, and connected.

“The Pioneer was designed with the driver experience as a top priority, offering features like our exclusive premium seating system with armrests on both sides, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a customizable switch layout,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “The MyMack app extends this driver-centric philosophy beyond the cab, giving drivers unprecedented control and information access even when they’re away from their truck.”

Here’s what drivers can do with the MyMack app:

Check fuel, DEF, and oil levels remotely

Monitor vehicle lights status

Turn on the Mack Integrated Parking Cooler to pre-set cab temperature before your shift starts

“The MyMack app represents a significant advancement in how drivers interact with their vehicles,” said Patrick Brown, director of strategy, Mack Trucks. “By putting vital truck information and controls literally in the palm of their hands, we’re helping drivers get the job done more efficiently and safely, while improving their overall experience.”

Part of Mack’s Bigger Connected Platform

The MyMack app is part of Mack’s larger Integrated Uptime bundle, which includes Mack Connect—an all-in-one fleet management portal now standard on the Pioneer. With Mack Connect, drivers and fleet managers can track truck location, review fuel efficiency and idle time, and even see which drivers are coasting too much or braking too hard.

“Mack Connect is built for Mack customers to provide them with more detailed information than they can get elsewhere,” Brown said. “We’re enabling fleet managers to make data-driven decisions that streamline their operations, while maintaining our commitment to maximizing uptime.”

Mack Connect also helps with safety and diagnostics. It monitors seatbelt usage, roll stability events, and braking habits—giving fleets better data for coaching and compliance. Plus, it includes GuardDog Connect, Mack’s diagnostic system that tracks issues, recommends repairs, and even handles over-the-air updates to reduce downtime.

With a five-year intro bundle available and apps ready to download in the Apple Store and Google Play, the MyMack app could be a real game-changer for anyone driving a Pioneer.

Mack Trucks has just introduced the highly anticipated Pioneer model, replacing the Anthem as the company’s top on-highway truck after eight successful years. The debut event took place in Brooklyn, New York, just a short distance from Mack’s original home, and it signals a major shift in Mack’s approach to the Class 8 segment.

Fernando Couceiro, Mack’s Vice President and Product Owner for Highway Trucks, explained that while the Anthem had been popular in daycab fleets since its launch in 2017, it didn’t quite hit the mark in the sleeper market. With the Pioneer, Mack aims to win back ground in the long-haul segment, where it currently holds a smaller 2% share.

Jonathan Randall, President of Mack Trucks North America, addressed the audience at the reveal, emphasizing the need for Mack to surpass competitors: “To take share from our competitors, we have to be better than them.” He stressed the importance of pushing boundaries with the Pioneer to remain competitive in the marketplace.

Lukas Yates, Mack’s Expert Chief Designer, shared that the truck’s design was built around three core principles: performance, comfort, and aerodynamics. The Pioneer promises to deliver impressive efficiency without compromising the rugged, iconic look that Mack is known for.

The Pioneer’s arrival is the culmination of an eight-year development journey, supported by a buzz-generating social media campaign leading up to the event. Teasers such as the cryptic “monster Mack” video and Blair Witch-style clues had truck enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the truck’s reveal.

In a nod to Mack’s 125th anniversary, Volvo Group CEO Martin Lundstedt compared the excitement surrounding the Pioneer’s debut to the 2017 Anthem launch, calling it “almost like Christmas Day” for the brand.

As the new flagship model, the Pioneer takes the spotlight, though the Anthem will remain available. Mack Trucks President Stephen Roy confirmed, “We are so revved up and ready to show you the next generation of Anthem… but not today.”

Aerodynamics and Performance at the Forefront

One of the Pioneer’s standout features is its improved aerodynamics, which help the truck achieve greater fuel efficiency. The truck’s design eliminates the iconic bulldog ornament from the hood, integrating it into the grille to reduce drag. The grille is reinforced with a durable, lightweight metal mesh, which adds strength and reduces weight.

The truck also features new headlamps with a defrost system to prevent ice buildup, a smart and functional design change.

Mack’s emphasis on aerodynamics extends to the cab, where the design team balanced airflow optimization with maintaining the company’s signature rugged look. “It had to pass the B.A. test,” said Couceiro. “Does it look badass?” Lukas Yates pointed out the challenge of combining aerodynamics with toughness, calling it “really difficult to make an aero shape look tough.”

Thanks to these aerodynamic updates, a redesigned MP13 engine, and an upgraded transmission, the Pioneer delivers up to 11% better fuel efficiency than its predecessor, with a 4% improvement directly attributed to the new engine.

The Pioneer also introduces a digital mirror system, replacing traditional side mirrors with cameras mounted on top of the sleeper. This innovation boosts fuel efficiency by about 1% and offers better visibility by eliminating blind spots.

Driver-Centered Comfort and Interior Design

The Pioneer’s interior is equally impressive. It was completely redesigned based on feedback from professional drivers. Mack conducted a clinic at Virginia Tech, where 40 drivers provided input on the truck’s ergonomics, ensuring the truck’s cabin is as driver-friendly as possible.

Vince Lokers, Chief Designer of the Pioneer’s interior, reflected on the design process: “An all new body-in-white is really a dream come true for a designer.” The result is a truck that’s comfortable and practical for drivers.

The Pioneer offers a premium seating system, featuring wider, taller frames, heated and cooled seats, and even a built-in massage function. The cab itself has been redesigned with 3.5 inches more width and an additional inch of headroom, making it easier for drivers to get in and out safely.

Other driver-friendly features include a push-button start, a steering column-mounted transmission stalk for better ergonomics, and a flat-bottom steering wheel for easier access. There’s also wireless charging, a customizable switch layout, and a parking cooler that allows the truck’s batteries to keep the cabin cool without idling.

Safety and Technology Features

The Pioneer comes equipped with several cutting-edge safety features, including frontal airbags and Mack Protect, which integrates advanced driver assistance systems. Inspired by the construction industry, a new cab entry step design provides better grip and reduces snow and ice buildup in winter conditions.

On the tech side, the Pioneer is the most connected Mack truck to date. It features remote diagnostics, over-the-air software updates, and the MyMack app, which allows drivers to monitor truck status and control key functions remotely. The truck also includes dual inductive charging stations for both the driver’s position and the bunk area.

The infotainment system has been updated with a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch secondary screen for easy control of all features. For those who need to mount devices for navigation or compliance, the Pioneer offers a new ELD mounting plate and a dedicated tablet holder.

Mack Trucks sets a new standard for the Class 8 on-highway market with the Pioneer. The truck’s blend of aerodynamics, performance, and driver-centered features demonstrates Mack’s commitment to staying ahead of the competition. As the company celebrates its 125th anniversary, the Pioneer is a bold statement of Mack’s vision for the future of trucking.

Mack Trucks has kicked off its 125th anniversary with exciting developments for its customers. Jonathan Randall, President of Mack Trucks North America, recently described this significant milestone as “a monster year for Mack,” signaling a strong start for the company. But rather than just celebrating, Mack is giving back with new advancements to its connectivity platform.

The latest updates include automatic software updates through its over-the-air (OTA) update platform and a self-service feature allowing fleets to modify truck parameters directly through Mack Connect.

Simplifying Updates with AutoSend

Nicole Portello, Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer for Mack Trucks, likened the new AutoSend update feature to how smartphones handle system updates. AutoSend notifies fleets and drivers via the in-cab Driver-Display Activation when an OTA update becomes available. From there, fleets have up to 28 days to decide when to install the update.

Best of all, AutoSend ensures updates can be performed whenever the truck is parked, without requiring any intervention from drivers, fleet managers, or Mack’s customer care team. “It gives a lot of control and a lot of power back to the fleets,” said Portello, noting that trucks running the latest software experience 22% less unplanned downtime.

Since its launch, Mack’s telematics gateway—standard on all Mack trucks with Mack engines over the past 10 years—has been installed in 200,000 of its Class 8 trucks. Of those, 73,000 trucks are currently subscribed to Mack’s Integrated Uptime bundle, and over 24,000 remote updates have been completed.

Starting in the coming weeks, AutoSend will be a standard feature for customers with trucks equipped with Driver-Display Activation, a digital dashboard interface allowing drivers to review and install updates directly. This feature is available on most Mack-powered trucks built after November 30, 2020, and customers can choose to opt out if desired. According to Portello, fewer than 100 current subscribers have elected to opt out of the program so far.

Self-Serve Vehicle Parameters by Mid-Year

By mid-year, Mack will further streamline operations for its customers with the introduction of self-serve parameter changes through Mack Connect. This new capability will enable motor carriers to independently adjust settings like road speed limits and idle shutdown parameters, as well as create profiles specific to each truck.

Previously, making these types of adjustments required help from Mack’s Uptime Center or a trip to a dealership. Now, fleets can manage these changes themselves, directly within the Mack Connect portal.

As Mack Trucks celebrates 125 years of innovation and leadership, it continues to push boundaries in connectivity and fleet efficiency—proving that it’s not just a giant in history, but also in the future of trucking.

Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT) has unveiled its 2025 Top 20 Products, recognizing the most innovative and impactful new solutions introduced in the trucking industry over the past year. From artificial intelligence to automation and connectivity, this year’s winners highlight how technology continues to drive the industry forward.

What are the HDT Top 20 Awards?

The HDT Top 20 Products honor cutting-edge innovations designed to solve critical industry challenges and enhance fleet operations. This exclusive list is selected by HDT editors in collaboration with a panel of fleet managers, focusing on products that demonstrate the following qualities:

Innovation

Ability to address key industry issues

Potential to improve fleet performance and profitability

To be eligible for consideration, products must have been featured in HDT’s editorial coverage—either on the website or in the magazine—and be commercially available or scheduled for release within the year. Prototypes and concept products are not eligible, and each company can only receive one award annually. Entire vehicles are also excluded from the selection process.

The Selection Process

“It’s not enough for a product to simply be innovative,” explained Deborah Lockridge, Editor and Associate Publisher of HDT. “By including fleet managers in determining the Top 20 Products award, we provide our audience a list of products that have the potential to address pain points and help them succeed in a fast-changing and competitive industry.”

Celebrating the Winners
