The ongoing fire activity is affecting one of the state’s primary east-west freight routes while also creating challenges on nearby highways that commercial traffic often depends on when detours become necessary.

Interstate 84 Has Reopened, but Conditions Remain Unstable

Interstate 84 reopened early on July 29 after fire activity forced an overnight closure. Firefighters continue to work near a 30-mile section of the interstate between Baker City and Ontario, where changing conditions could require intermittent closures if fire behavior worsens.

Wildfires are also affecting portions of U.S. 20 and U.S. 26 in eastern and central Oregon. Even highways that remain open can be affected quickly as fires shift direction, smoke reduces visibility, or emergency crews need additional access to the roadway.

ODOT advises travelers to expect conditions to change throughout the day rather than assuming a route will remain open from departure to arrival.

Detours Can Create New Challenges for Commercial Traffic

Closing a major interstate does not simply move traffic onto another highway. According to ODOT, many secondary roads were never designed to accommodate sustained volumes of heavy commercial vehicles, and congestion develops quickly once traffic begins diverting away from a primary freight corridor.

Long backups, slower travel speeds, and a greater risk of crashes become more common under those conditions, particularly where two-lane highways carry a mix of passenger vehicles, emergency equipment, and commercial trucks.

GPS navigation can also become problematic during wildfire events. ODOT warns that some navigation systems may direct drivers onto Forest Service roads or other routes that are unsuitable for large commercial vehicles. Checking official roadway information before leaving a primary highway can help prevent unnecessary detours.

Waiting Near a Closure Can Leave Drivers With Few Options

Truck parking areas, fuel stations and other services located near highway closures often reach capacity as commercial vehicles wait for roads to reopen. Once those locations fill, drivers may have limited access to fuel, food or overnight accommodations while closure times remain uncertain.

Rather than driving toward an active closure, ODOT recommends remaining in an area where essential services are available until updated road conditions indicate travel can resume safely.

Smoke Is Only One Part of the Hazard

Dense smoke can reduce visibility quickly, but it is only one reason highways are being restricted. Firefighters and emergency responders are working alongside many affected roadways, while some highways are also serving as evacuation routes for nearby communities.

Wildfires can create additional hazards even after flames move away from the highway. Damaged guardrails, missing traffic signs, and debris may remain until repair crews can safely enter the area. Power outages caused by fires may also disable traffic signals, requiring drivers to treat dark intersections as four-way stops under Oregon traffic laws.
