Truck drivers are the backbone of America’s highways, and some go above and beyond to help others when it matters most. The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) is giving the public a chance to recognize these everyday heroes by opening voting for the Highway Angel of the Year award.

Each year, TCA highlights professional drivers whose quick thinking, courage, and compassion make a real difference on the road. After reviewing dozens of nominations from across the country, TCA has selected its Top Five finalists. Now it’s your turn to help choose the Top Three drivers to be honored at TCA’s 2026 Annual Convention, February 28 through March 3 in Orlando, Florida.

“One of the most meaningful parts of this program is hearing directly from our members about the incredible things their drivers do when no one is watching,” said Zander Gambill, vice president of membership outreach at TCA. “These finalists embody the courage and compassion that define our industry, and we’re excited to invite the public to help us celebrate them.”

Meet the Top Five Finalists

These drivers’ stories show what it means to step up when it counts:

TCA encourages drivers, industry colleagues, friends, and family to read these stories, share them, and cast votes for the drivers who best represent the spirit of the Highway Angel program.

At Daimler Truck North America’s Madras proving grounds, Western Star’s 2025 Star Nation Experience united six vocational truck operators and two participants from the gaming world for three days of intense challenges, hands-on technology, and industry camaraderie. Competitors traveled from across the U.S. and Canada to put their abilities to the test and explore the future of vocational trucking.

Real-World Skills Meet Real-World Machines

Participants climbed into the cabs of Western Star 47X and 49X models to face a series of demanding events that pushed their precision and problem-solving to the limit. The lineup included:

Backing trucks up the steep incline known as “Mount Madras”

Executing precise gravel spreads at a rock quarry

Going head-to-head in an American Truck Simulator competition

Each challenge was designed not only to assess driver skill but also to highlight the Detroit Assurance safety technology in a safe, controlled environment.

From Gamer to Trucker

Casey LaDelle, returning as a team captain, reflected on what sets the Star Nation Experience apart.

“You realize the people behind the scenes ARE the Western Star brand, and the trucks are the product of the passion for what they do.”

The event’s inclusion of gaming community members underscored how skills can transfer from simulation to real-world trucking.

Passing the Torch to the Next Generation

Last year’s champion, Tatiana DeYoung, stepped into a mentorship role for 2025, finding just as much reward in coaching as she did in competing.

“I like how I’m able to be a part of their experience and let them know what I know, and then they just take it and apply it however they would like.”

Her guidance showcased the event’s blend of competition and collaboration, giving new participants the chance to learn from proven veterans.

Honoring the Backbone of Vocational Trucking

Event lead Alex Bender Martin explained that Star Nation is more than just a competition — it’s a celebration of the people who keep vocational trucking strong.

“We really look at all the winners that are here as the backbone of the vocational industry, and we want to celebrate them. We want to bring back that camaraderie and that pride in this business.”

The three-day experience wasn’t just about winning. From behind-the-scenes tours of Daimler’s facilities to outdoor activities and fireside conversations with executives, Star Nation created a space where technology, skill, and personal connection came together.

While one team ultimately claimed the top spot, the true success of the 2025 Star Nation Experience was in the relationships built, connecting operators, cutting-edge technology, and the Western Star brand in a way that reflects the passion and pride driving the industry forward.

For many truckers, the best tools aren’t found in an app store or behind a touchscreen—they’re tucked in the glove box, clipped to the dash, or stored in the backseat of a rig that’s seen a million miles. When TDUSA asked drivers to share the old-school gadgets they still use on the road, we didn’t expect hundreds of answers… but we got them.

From Rand McNally atlases to wind-up alarm clocks, these are the classics that still earn their place in the cab.

Paper Maps and Road Atlases

One thing was made crystal clear: GPS may come and go, but a map never loses signal.

Deborah Davis keeps both a CB radio and Rand McNally Atlas in her truck.

Elvis Johnson, Eric Campbell, Kim Sorrell, and Ron Baker all proudly named their road atlas as their must-have.

Andrew Milley shared, “I have a distrust for Google and GPS. I like to look at the route and take notes before the exit I need.”

Patrick Dixon carries an AM/FM handheld radio for local updates—because tech fails, but radio keeps talking.

John Kingston simply said: “Me.” And that may be the most reliable gadget of all.

CB Radios: The Original Social Network

Long before apps and hands-free texting, there was channel 19.

Maurice Williams Jr, James Wood, Jerry Blake, Will Titus, and Richard Gadget Greene all still ride with a CB radio.

Garry Harrison customized his with a Connex board and talkback mic, while Joshua Ainsworth added an echo board.

Lloyd Dailey pairs his CB with good country music—because some things just belong together.

Manual Transmissions, Clutches, and More

A stick shift isn’t just nostalgic—it’s how many truckers learned to drive.

Tim Potter, Charity Edelmaier, and Lee Wagner are keeping it real with a manual transmission.

Billy Graeber and Bill Eberhard both noted that they still use a clutch—a disappearing feature in modern rigs.

Allen Coons? He’s working with a 13-speed.

Brains, Courtesy, and Common Sense

Surprisingly—or not—the most mentioned “gadget” was the one that can’t be bought in a store.

“My brain,” said David Miller, Lisa Oscar, Joseph Brown, and Brian Miller, among many others.

Bryan Vanartsen still reads maps and added, “My mind.”

Mark Lucier noted, “Common sense, which isn’t so common anymore.”

Lucky Taylor summed it up with “Common sense and courtesy.”

Everyday Essentials That Still Work

Some drivers kept it simple. Their go-to tools? Nothing fancy—just practical.

Rodney Henry and Michael Challis both rely on a Rand McNally.

Ronnie Easterly uses a wind-up alarm clock—no power needed.

Richard Hohall? A pencil and notebook.

Robert Joyner sticks with a tire pressure gauge, while John Evans uses a vacuum gauge to monitor fuel efficiency.

Chris Sheridan brings his Leatherman.

Just Plain Old School (And Still Useful)

Some answers didn’t fall into categories—but they stuck with us.

Jherhk Phillips carries a Walkman to get local weather updates when the digital signal drops.

Nicole Hellstrom keeps an analog compass, a tape deck, and a map book on board.

Nav Aujhla? “A compass—pointy one.”

Why It Matters

Technology changes fast, but experience doesn’t. Whether it’s an atlas, a CB, or just good instincts, these tools represent more than convenience—they stand for independence, preparation, and pride in doing the job right.

If you’re someone who still believes in doing things the right way—even if it’s not the newest way—you’re not alone.

From wide-open highways to long overnight runs, music is one of the most reliable co-pilots a truck driver can have. Whether it’s classic rock, outlaw country, heavy metal, or something totally unexpected, the right playlist helps keep the miles rolling by.

We asked our Truck Drivers USA Facebook community:
“Who’s your most listened to artist this year?”

The answers were loud and proud—and the variety says a lot about the personalities behind the wheel.

Rock and Metal Are Still Kings of the Road

If you’re looking for music that gets the adrenaline going, you’re in good company.

Merv Gristey keeps it legendary with Rush, AC/DC, Metallica, and rising favorites Liliac.
Ferdi Van de Kruisweg rocks out to Iron Maiden, Five Finger Death Punch, and Ghost, while Craig Clancy adds The Stunning and Shed Seven to his Iron Maiden rotation.
Kenny Robertson turns it up with Metallica and Slayer, and Mike Bohannon mixes in Kid Rock and AC/DC.
Jeremy Sieving is all about Orbit Culture, and Steven Clark shared two favorites: Nightwish and Amon Amarth.
Kaye Kangas tunes into Apocalyptica, Dethklok, and classic rock radio.
Shawn L Mauldin adds Subhumans to his list, while Dave George reps The Exploited.

Country Still Runs Deep in the Cab

The classics are alive and well.

Dean P. Voshell listens to Waylon Jennings, and Tony Cane shared a mix of Merle Haggard, Queen, and Haggard’s sons.
Don Sell goes with T. Graham Brown, and Randy Paiz prefers Alan Jackson.
Leo Fagan keeps it simple with “Merele the Man Haggard.”
Will Wipf summed up his vibe: “Anything old country.”
Linda Crain likes Luke Combs, and Juan Manuel Lumbreras Jr. sticks with Morgan Wallen.

Every Genre, Every Generation

Drivers didn’t hold back when it came to variety.

Joshua Ainsworth stays loyal to Def Leppard, and Lynn Engelbretson rotates between Muse and Iron Maiden.
Chris Goodwin shouted out Moonshine Bandits, while AJ Risner named Tony Justice: “I love music I can relate to.”
Thelma Blom listens to Heidi Hauge, and John W Van Syoc rides with Cara Dillon.
Patricia Butler recommended Dan Vasc on YouTube for his vocals and powerful covers.
Nancy Heffner Jacobson listens to Marc Scibilia, especially the track Times Like This.
Les Wohlers is all about Jimmy Buffett, and Kevin Marks prefers the beats of Paul Oakenfold.
Lynnea Parks keeps the energy high with Skillet, and Nancy Laughlin listens to Post Malone.
Kristopher Kolinek reps Pecos and the Rooftops, Steven Smithen is into Dream Theater, and Beau Johnson gave a nod to Sleep Token.

Outliers and Deep Cuts

Every now and then, a response makes you smile.

John Garafola gave a truly unique mix: Slim Whitman, Boxcar Willie, “Yoko Ono – Clearing the Room,” and “Andre the Giant – All My Best.”
Robert Schaffer listens to The Rolling Stones, while Dawson Vanroekel picked ILLENIUM.
Dan Shakes keeps it southern with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Terry Hart added rising artist Kassi Ashton.
Glenn Tyler rides with Demun Jones, and Keith Bolton gave shoutouts to Fozzy and THC (Texas Hippie Coalition).
Mike Mike added Sheryl Crow.
Nick DenHaan even dropped a link to his own album on Spotify.

Sometimes, Silence Says It All

Not everyone listens to music on the road.

Ryan Whalen keeps it simple: “Whatever my wife plays.”
Kyle Yadon is more into Audible these days.
Scott Krauss shared, “A lot of quiet—just the hum of the tires on the road.”
And John Crooks just said: “Silence.”

Join the Conversation

Truckers don’t all listen to the same thing—but every playlist tells a story. From country ballads to face-melting metal, these drivers are keeping America moving one track at a time.

Have you ever wondered what it would look like if truckers had their own version of the Olympics? We reached out to the Truck Drivers USA community with a fun question: “If truckers had their own Olympics, what event would you dominate?” The responses? Hilarious, relatable, and full of the grit and quirks that define life on the road.

Here’s a roundup of the most memorable replies from drivers themselves—because when it comes to the trucking lifestyle, nobody knows it better than those who live it.

Cab Life Olympics

Bigg Redd would easily clinch gold in the “Making a Sandwich While Cruising Down the Highway” event and multitasking at its finest.

Kyle Yadon is all set for the “Brewing Coffee in the Sleeper” challenge, while John Combs dominates in the “Armchair Coffee Consumption” category.

Sean Haydn Williams proves his trucker kitchen skills in the “Cooking in the Cab at Speed” competition. That’s real trucker ingenuity.

Legendary Driving Skills

Bill Paddack nails it: “Twin Stick Shifting! That would eliminate half the competition!”

Trevor Farley would be the master of “Floating the Gears,” while Dale McPherson’s precision is unmatched when it comes to “Backing Up Wide Open in a Straight Line.”

James Straube adds, “Backing! I can put a trailer anywhere,” proving just how valuable that skill is.

Fuel Island Feats

Rodger Stout is ready to take home gold in the “30-Minute Break on the Fuel Island” event.

JJ Johnson is up for a triple threat: the “35-Point Straight Back,” the “Flip-Flop Sprint,” and the “Airline Stretch.”

Dave Clark reflects on a familiar scene: “Park at the pumps, take a shower, grab some food, and hope for the best.”

Scale & Speed Challenges

Robert Deitrich and Joshua Rojas are the undisputed champions of “Scale Dodging and Freightliner Passing.”

Mike Brooks clinches the title in “In the Left Lane, Passing for 85 Miles.”

Derek Unger and Otis Boggs go full throttle in the “24-Hour Cannonball Run.”

Unwritten Trucker Rules

Martin Torres nails a universal truth: “If whining about bad drivers were an event, we’d dominate the world.”

Jason Robinson enters with a solid “Being in the Wrong Lane for Exit During Rush Hour.”

Tracy Feltner perfects his form in the “Steering Wheel Toss” with the signature move: foot on the dash, hand at 8 o’clock.

Paul Barrow keeps it simple with a “Pie-Eating Contest”—because who doesn’t love pie?

The Real MVPs

Rex Rodgers is a true veteran, earning respect for “Keeping My Truck Clean and Making Friends for 50 Years.”

William Johnson stands tall with “Most Miles Driven in a Day.”

Joseph Kittilson brings precision to the table with “Stopping the Right Steer Tire in a 12″ Square Box 2 Times Out of 10.”

Do Truckers Really Have Their Own Olympics?

Some community members pointed out that events like the Truck Driving Championships and Trucker Rodeos do exist. Phil Warwick explained, “It consists of a written test, a pre-trip inspection, and a skills test.” Charles Kaulukukui added, “We do, but we call it a truck rodeo.”

While those events focus on safety and skills, the Truckers USA Olympics are all about celebrating the real-world skills truckers master daily.

What’s the Value in All This?

While this conversation is filled with humor, it shines a light on the adaptability, skill, and grit that truckers bring to the road. From perfecting shifting techniques to making coffee while cruising to handling the stress of fuel island management—these are the unsung skills that keep the industry rolling.

Now it’s your turn: What event would you dominate in the Truckers USA Olympics? Drop your answer on our Truck Drivers USA Facebook page and join the conversation.

We asked the Truck Drivers USA community a tough but fun question:

Would you rather have free fuel or free food for life?

The comments rolled in fast, and drivers definitely had opinions. Some leaned toward saving thousands on fuel, while others saw the long-term value in cutting down food costs—especially after retirement or if the company already covers fuel.

Here’s what drivers had to say.

The Case for Free Fuel

For many truckers, fuel isn’t just an expense—it’s the cost of doing business. That’s why so many drivers jumped at the chance for free fuel.

Billy Klepi summed it up simply:
“Bro I get 13 to the gallon. I’m taking that free gas. My truck thinks it’s free, so I’ll take it free.”

Jason Lawrence broke it down with some serious math:
“A gallon of diesel weighs about 7 pounds, and I average seven mpg. I’m losing roughly $4 in fuel every 7 minutes. So, I would rather have the free fuel than free food because I’m not consuming $34.40/hour in food.”

Randy Paiz added some perspective:
“Would I pay $20 for each meal or $1000 every time I fuel? No brainer there.”

Others saw fuel as a tool for making money or gaining flexibility:

Phil Maddalena: “Fuel—my truck can make me money to buy food.”

Cory Clark: “Fuel, definitely. I can go without food for a better part of the day, and free fuel will most definitely free up funds for food.”

Gustavo FigueroaZapata: “Fuel, ’cause I’ma make money off of that.”

And a few offered creative workarounds for skipping the grocery store:

Bubba Bubbah: “Fuel. We could hunt.”

Robert Schaffer: “Fuel. I can shoot something to eat.”

Lisa Oscar: “Fuel. You can grow food.”

The Case for Free Food

Not everyone is paying for fuel—especially company drivers or those planning for retirement.

Joshua Warner made it clear:
“I’m a company driver, so I’ll take free food. That’d cut my expenses down nicely.”

Rafael Pardo agreed:
“Food, because I’m a company driver and about to retire. I’m going to spend more money on food than gas.”

Mike Andrus added:
“Food, because I need food after I retire. The company pays for the fuel, so yeah, that’s not important.”

Some just liked the comfort of always having a meal covered:

Bill Mancini: “Free food! I’m not planning on dying in this truck!”

Billy Wilson: “Food, because I hate leaving the house.”

Andrew Young: “My food bill is MUCH higher than my fuel bill.”

Others saw food as more essential to survival:

Alicia Bonneville Hays: “You can’t consume fuel. You can survive without driving anywhere if necessary.”

Paul Richards: “Food.”

Terry Davies: “Food.”

Jennie Brinker: “Food.”

Company Drivers vs. Owner-Operators

It’s clear that whether you’re a company driver or an owner-operator plays a significant role in how you answered.

Company drivers leaned heavily toward food since their fuel was already covered, but owner-operators saw free fuel as a serious financial win.

This question also brought out some creative and humorous responses. Jackie Lee joked:
“I would rather have the free fuel. If I got free food, I would eat it all and gain 1000 pounds! HAHA!!”

Can’t Choose? Some Want Both

A few people couldn’t decide.

Harley Courtney said: “Both.”

Julia Wojdacz agreed: “Both!”

Rennie Thiessen: “BOTH … LOL”

Timothy Eakles: “May I have both please and thank you?”

So… What Would You Choose?

Whether you’re team free fuel or food forever, one thing’s clear — truck drivers know how to think things through. These everyday choices aren’t just about dollars; they reflect what matters most to drivers balancing long hours, tight budgets, and life on the move.

The Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) kicks off tomorrow, running March 27-29 at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville. Whether you’re an owner-operator, company driver, or just a fan of the industry, there’s plenty to check out.

The MATS Pro Talks Education Series is back, offering a packed schedule of sessions designed to help drivers and trucking professionals stay ahead in the industry. From business strategies to industry insights, these sessions provide valuable knowledge for anyone looking to sharpen their skills.

For those who love custom trucks, the PKY Truck Beauty Championship will showcase some of the most impressive rigs on the road. Competing trucks will be on display in Lot N, giving attendees a chance to see some of the best builds in the business up close. The MATS Big Rig Build-Off also returns, featuring five custom truck builders going head-to-head.

Drivers bringing their rigs to MATS can take advantage of the Truck Parking Community at 1032 Phillips Lane, right across from the main entrance.

For years, Citizens Band (CB) radios have been an essential communication tool in the trucking industry, with CB handles serving as the signature identity of truck drivers. These handles go far beyond mere functionality; they unite drivers through a shared sense of community and culture. Exploring the evolution of CB handles highlights their cultural significance and lasting relevance in trucking.

A Glimpse Into the Origins of CB Radios and Handles

The story of CB radios begins in the 1940s, when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated certain radio frequencies for personal and professional use. Truckers were among the first to adopt this technology, using CB radios as a tool for long-distance communication and real-time updates during their travels. Out of this practice grew CB handles—personalized nicknames that truckers would use to chat over radio waves. Over time, what began as practical communication morphed into a tradition deeply rooted in trucker culture. These handles not only helped drivers identify each other but also created an air of familiarity and camaraderie between individuals navigating the highways.

The 1970s Boom of CB Radios and Handles

Truckers and CB radios gained significant cultural visibility throughout the 1970s. This era marked the “Golden Age” of CB radios due in part to the growing popularity of trucker culture, exemplified by entertainment hits like Smokey and the Bandit (1977). During this period, CB handles became a form of self-expression. Drivers adopted monikers that were often inventive, funny, or reflective of their personality, such as “Bandit,” “Little Red,” and “Big Rig.” These names weren’t just about being recognizable on the airwaves—they became a proud symbol of the independence, resilience, and individuality that defined the trucking lifestyle during this iconic decade.

The Decline of CB Radios in a Digital Age

However, as communication technologies changed in the late 1990s and 2000s, CB radios began losing ground. With the advent of mobile phones, GPS systems, and other tech-savvy tools, truckers started turning to these new methods for easier and more efficient communication. Consequently, the tradition of using CB handles also started to fade. Drivers began relying on formal names or vehicle numbers, and fewer newcomers adopted CB handles, causing a gradual decline in their prevalence.

A Revival of CB Radios and Trucker Handles

Despite their decline, CB radios remain a trusted tool for many long-haul truckers, especially in rural areas where cell service is unreliable. Recent years have even seen a revival, as drivers rediscover the unique benefits CB radios provide. Alongside this renewed interest, CB handles have made a comeback, offering truckers a way to hold onto a treasured tradition while reflecting modern sensibilities. Today’s truckers are proving that creativity and tradition can co-exist as they adapt these classic nicknames to fit current times.

The Enduring Legacy of CB Handles

Over the decades, CB handles have transformed from a practical necessity to a cultural emblem of the trucking profession. They represent more than just a way to communicate—they highlight the adaptability and resilience of trucker culture itself. Although technology continues to change how truckers stay connected, CB handles have stood the test of time, offering both functional value and a deeply symbolic expression of camaraderie.
