A long-running tradition at the Mid-America Trucking Show will once again focus on helping drivers who face medical hardships off the road. The St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund (SCF) has been selected as the beneficiary of the Silent Auction scheduled during MATS 2026.

The event will take place March 26 through 28 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, where thousands of drivers, carriers, and industry professionals gather each year for one of trucking’s largest annual events.

A Night That Brings the Industry Together

The Silent Auction will be held during the MATS Opening Night Reception. The event brings together attendees, exhibitors, and industry leaders for an evening of networking, food, and entertainment as the show officially gets underway.

Auction items are donated by industry partners, and attendees can place bids throughout the reception. All proceeds from the auction go directly toward supporting SCF and its work assisting truck drivers and their families during times of illness or injury.

“Last year’s Silent Auction was an incredible example of what happens when our industry comes together for drivers in need,” said Courtney Niemann, executive director of SCF. “The generosity we saw — from donated items to competitive bidding — directly translated into meaningful support for truckers and their families. We’re excited to bring that same energy back to MATS this year.”

According to SCF, last year’s auction raised more than $13,500 for the nonprofit, with participation from donors, bidders, and volunteers across the trucking industry.

Why the Fund Matters to Drivers

For many professional drivers, especially owner-operators, time away from the road due to medical issues can quickly create financial strain. The St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund provides short-term assistance for Class A over-the-road drivers who have been forced out of work because of illness or injury within the last 365 days.

The organization also offers health and wellness initiatives aimed at helping drivers prevent long-term health problems and stay on the road.

“Owner-operators and professional drivers are the backbone of our nation’s supply chain, but they often don’t have a safety net when unexpected health issues arise,” said Norita Taylor, SCF board president and director of public relations at OOIDA. “The Silent Auction at MATS is a powerful reminder that this industry stands behind its drivers. Every bid placed, and every item donated, helps ensure that professional drivers have somewhere to turn when illness or injury takes them off the road.”

Opening Night Reception Sponsor

This year’s Opening Night Reception is sponsored by Triumph, a company focused on modernizing and simplifying freight transactions through financial and technology services designed for the trucking industry.

A Major Gathering for the Trucking Industry

Now in its more than 50-year history, the Mid-America Trucking Show continues to be the largest annual gathering in trucking. Each year, the event draws thousands of drivers, fleet representatives, manufacturers, and service providers from across North America.

The Silent Auction remains one of the show’s community-focused events, giving the industry a way to support drivers facing difficult circumstances.

SCF encourages MATS exhibitors and industry partners to donate items for the auction and invites attendees to participate in bidding during the Opening Night Reception.

More information about the Silent Auction and how to donate items can be found here. Drivers or industry partners interested in supporting the organization can also contact Diane Hutsell, director of philanthropy, at diane@truckersfund.org.

Life on the road is tough enough, but when a driver gets sidelined by an injury or illness, the stress can hit fast. The Trucking Cares Foundation (TCF) recently made a move many drivers will appreciate by donating $15,000 to the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund, a group dedicated to helping truckers stay afloat when they cannot work.

“Trucking is more than an industry, it is a family,” said TCF Chairman Greg Owen, head coach of Ability Tri-Modal. “Truckers look out for one another, and when one of our family members falls on hard times, we extend our full support.”

For a lot of drivers, that sense of family is real. When you are out on the interstate week after week, knowing someone has your back matters.

St. Christopher’s executive director, Courtney Niemann, shared how much this kind of support means for drivers who are struggling. “The trucking industry is built on community, and the Trucking Cares Foundation continues to show what it means to care for our own,” she said. “Their generosity allows us to offer peace of mind to drivers and families facing medical crises.”

How St. Christopher Helps Drivers

Many drivers have known someone who was forced off the road because of a health issue. When that happens, bills do not slow down. That is where the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund steps in.

The fund provides short-term financial aid to Class A over-the-road drivers when they are unable to work. Over the past 15 years, St. Christopher has helped more than 4,100 drivers and covered over $5.3 million in essential household expenses, including rent or mortgage payments, utilities, vehicle loans, and insurance.

The organization also offers free health and wellness programs designed to help drivers stay on the road longer. These include support for diabetes prevention, tobacco cessation, chronic disease management, cancer screenings, and vaccines.

Why This Donation Matters

For any driver who has been sidelined and worried about keeping up with household expenses, support like this is more than a headline. It is really helpful. The $15,000 donation from TCF means more drivers will have a safety net during medical hardships.

Anything that helps truckers move forward financially, physically, or mentally is a win for the entire industry.

For many over-the-road (OTR) drivers, long hours on the road can feel isolating. That’s one reason more truckers are choosing to bring a pet along for the ride. Whether it’s a dog, cat, or even a smaller animal, having a furry co-pilot adds comfort and companionship. But hitting the road with a pet isn’t as simple as putting them in the passenger seat—it takes planning, responsibility, and the right setup.

1. Understand Your Company’s Pet Policy

Before anything else, check with your carrier. Not all companies allow pets in their trucks, and those that do often have strict guidelines. For example, Roehl Transport allows pets but requires a non-refundable deposit and proof of vaccinations. Prime Inc. also permits dogs or cats under 30 pounds with a signed pet policy agreement. Common restrictions include size or breed limitations, spay/neuter requirements, and specific paperwork.

If you’re an owner-operator, you’ll have more freedom, but it’s still worth confirming that any customer-facing policies (especially at certain docks or facilities) won’t prevent you from having a pet in the cab.

2. Keep Legal Documents Handy

Traveling across state lines with a pet means carrying the right paperwork. At a minimum, you should have:

A current rabies certificate

Proof of vaccinations and vet visits

A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), especially for newer pets or certain states

These documents may be requested during inspections or at weigh stations. Keeping them organized in a folder or digital format ensures you’re never caught off guard.

3. Safety Comes First

Unrestrained pets in a moving truck are not just distracting—they’re a safety hazard. Use crash-tested pet seat belts, harnesses, or secure crates. Make sure your setup keeps the pet comfortable while preventing movement during sudden stops.

Also, consider adding a barrier between the front seats and the sleeper area to create a safe “rest zone” for your pet while you drive. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, proper restraint can protect both you and your pet in an accident.

4. Never Leave Pets in a Parked Truck

The inside of a cab can heat up fast—even with the windows cracked. According to the National Weather Service, vehicle interiors can rise more than 30°F in just 30 minutes. Leaving a pet in a hot cab, even briefly, can be fatal. If you’re stopping for fuel, food, or a break, plan ahead to make sure your pet can stay safe. Use window shades, fans, or idle-management systems with built-in climate control when absolutely necessary.

5. Ease into Road Life

Just like humans, pets need time to adapt. Start with short trips to help your pet get comfortable in the truck. Gradually increase trip length and maintain a consistent routine. Bring familiar items like a bed, toys, or blanket to create a sense of comfort.

Also, be prepared for accidents. Keep pet-safe cleaning supplies on hand, and make sure your rig is stocked with extra food, water, waste bags, and travel bowls.

6. Plan Regular Breaks

Pets need regular exercise and bathroom breaks—just like their humans. Plan stops every few hours and avoid areas with high truck traffic for safety. Rest areas with grassy patches or pet relief zones can be helpful. Some drivers also recommend using apps like BringFido or Trucker Path to find pet-friendly stops on the route.

Routine stops not only help your pet stay healthy but also give you a chance to recharge mentally and physically.

7. Enjoy the Benefits

Beyond companionship, pets can offer a range of benefits for truckers. They help relieve stress, encourage physical movement during breaks, and even provide a sense of security while parked overnight. Studies have shown that pet ownership can reduce anxiety and depression, both of which are common challenges among long-haul drivers.

Trucking with a pet can make life on the road more enjoyable—but it also requires commitment. By following company policies, keeping your pet’s documents up to date, and focusing on safety and comfort, you can build a routine that works for both of you. With the right preparation, a four-legged co-pilot might just be the best addition to your rig.

Drivers bringing their rigs to MATS can take advantage of the Truck Parking Community at 1032 Phillips Lane, right across from the main entrance. A free shuttle runs between the lot and the Expo Center during show hours. The lot isn’t just for parking—it’s a gathering spot with free coffee and espresso from Mudflap on Thursday and Friday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Before Friday night’s concert with Colt Ford and Tony Justice, Fistful of Tacos will be serving free tacos and nachos to the first 400 guests from 5:30-7 p.m.

Many exhibitors will also have special events, giveaways, and new products on display. Shell Rotella’s booth will feature an interactive experience with trucking personalities like the Boston Trucker, Clarissa Rankin, and Tarik Al-Amin II. Attendees can record a message in the Shell Rotella Recording Studio to thank a trucker or share their own story, with donations going to the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund.

The St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund will also hold a silent auction and 50/50 raffle at the MATS Opening Reception on Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A $1 donation at the SCF booth will let attendees spin the wheel for a chance to win prizes.

Other highlights include:

Heatso offering a limited-time 10% discount on its Fresco 9000 MaXX electric auxiliary air-conditioning unit.

Mother Trucker Yoga is introducing new wellness programs for CDL schools and fleets, alongside live demos and wellness products.

Garrett Steenblik’s story is a remarkable tale of resilience and transformation. His path from a health crisis to wellness, while working as an over-the-road trucker, is both inspiring and instructive.

A Wake-up Call on Wheels

Like many truckers, Garrett’s lifestyle led to serious health problems. His job’s sedentary nature, combined with unhealthy eating habits, pushed him into a severe health crisis. “I was trapped in a cycle of daily nausea, excruciating pain and sleepless nights, burdened with diagnoses of fatty liver disease and ulcers,” he shared with The Trucker. Additionally, mental health struggles from past traumas weighed heavily on him.

Seeking solace in unhealthy habits, Garrett’s initial response was to consume multiple Mountain Dews daily and indulge in binge eating. This approach only worsened his health.

Facing the Challenges of the Road

The difficulties Garrett encountered are not unique to him. Many truck drivers face similar health challenges due to the nature of their work, which offers limited support for maintaining good health. “While our society depends on the vital work of the trucking industry, truck drivers have scant support in maintaining their well-being,” Garrett notes. He highlights the grueling work schedules that leave little room for proper meals or exercise.

Reaching a breaking point, Garrett realized he had to make a change. “I decided to change while I was hunched over a toilet bowl, feeling defeated. I realized I was a victim of my own choices, and I refused to remain a hostage to my past.”

A Determined Path to Wellness

Armed with determination, Garrett began an arduous wellness journey. Initially, he focused on dietary changes and exercise, losing significant weight through consistent effort. “I lost my first 100 pounds simply by running in place for 45 minutes a day over 11 months,” he said. However, he soon realized the importance of understanding his body’s nutritional needs, learning to balance caloric intake with energy expenditure.

Switching to a low-carb, whole-food diet, Garrett embraced intermittent fasting and chose healthier foods. This lifestyle shift not only improved his physical health but also alleviated his mental health struggles. “As I improved my diet and exercise, my depression, anxiety and trauma began to lose their grip on my life,” he shares.

A Shared Journey and Support System

Garrett’s wife, Yvonne, played a crucial role in his transformation. As his team driving partner, she provided unwavering support and accountability. “My wife, Yvonne, is a powerful source of accountability and support. She’s played an essential role in my health journey through her love and encouragement.”

Together, they navigated the challenges of maintaining their health on the road, finding creative ways to incorporate exercise into their demanding schedules.

Achieving Milestones and Continuing the Mission

Garrett’s perseverance paid off as he achieved his health goals, eventually reaching a weight of 155 pounds. This remarkable transformation required years of dedication and some medical intervention to address excess skin.

Despite reaching his personal milestone, Garrett continues to face daily challenges in maintaining his health. He is now committed to helping others in the trucking community overcome their health obstacles. “I offer myself as a resource for fellow truckers looking to improve their overall well-being,” he says. Through online forums and support groups, Garrett shares his experiences and encourages others to prioritize their health.

Inspiring a Movement Towards Health

Garrett’s story serves as a powerful call to action for both truckers and the wider community. He hopes to raise awareness about the unique health challenges faced by drivers and inspire positive changes within the industry. “My story of returning to wellbeing while driving is exceptional, but it shouldn’t be,” he asserts. “Draw inspiration from one another and join the movement toward better health in trucking.”

By sharing his personal journey, Garrett Steenblik aims to inspire others to take charge of their health and support wellness initiatives in the trucking industry.
