Truckstop.com is giving its freight podcast a fresh start. Formerly known as Freight Nation, the series has been rebranded as Behind the Freight, reflecting a focus on real-world insights for truck drivers, carriers, brokers, and freight professionals.

Freight Nation was hosted by Brent Hutto for three years, building a loyal audience. Hutto is passing the reins to new co-hosts Todd Waldron, vice president of carrier experience, and John Howland, director of broker sales. Combined, Waldron and Howland bring more than 40 years of industry experience to the show.

“Running a freight business can feel overwhelming,” Waldron said. “Rate swings, fraud risks, and compliance updates. There’s plenty of talk in this industry, but genuine insight is hard to find. That’s why each week we focus on what is working right now, so listeners have timely, relevant information they can use to address business challenges.”

Behind the Freight builds on Truckstop.com’s commitment to equipping carriers and freight professionals with tools, information, and strategies to manage daily operations and long-term business growth.

“Understanding the market is one thing,” Howland said. “Knowing how it affects daily operations is another. By talking to people involved in freight operations, we get insights that help listeners prepare for what’s coming.”

Each episode features conversations with freight professionals about the issues that matter most, including market trends, fraud prevention, compliance, and operational efficiency. The podcast connects broader industry developments with the practical decisions drivers and brokers face every day.

“Every episode goes beyond the headlines,” Truckstop said. “The focus is on connecting broader industry trends with the decisions people make every day, without losing sight of the human side of the business. That mirrors what Truckstop.com has always stood for. Serving this industry means showing up for the people in it, not just the freight they move.”

The debut episode, titled Why Trucking Is About People, Not Just Freight (And Why That’s More Profitable), brings the transition full circle. Hutto joins Waldron and Howland to reflect on how relationships have shaped his career, why carriers remain the industry’s backbone, and how regulatory changes can create major shifts in the market.

The relaunch coincides with the Mid-America Trucking Show, where Truckstop.com is a sponsor. Waldron and Howland will record three live episodes at booth #16160, giving attendees the chance to hear discussions in real time.

New episodes of Behind the Freight will be released bi-weekly. Listeners can subscribe to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube to stay up to date with actionable insights that help drivers and freight professionals succeed in a dynamic market.

Take advantage of early registration for OOIDA’s Truck to Success seminar by September 1 to save $50 and receive a complimentary one-year OOIDA membership.

This three-day event, set for October 21-23 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Blue Springs, Missouri, offers the latest insights from OOIDA and trucking industry experts. It’s designed to guide drivers through what it takes to succeed as an owner-operator and help determine if this path fits your business goals.

Reserve your place today for Truck to Success.

“There’s a lot of failure in this industry,” explained Andrew King, director of the OOIDA Foundation. “We not only want to show them how to do it, but also whether you should or can do it. Success looks different to different people. It’s an initial investment up front that in the end could save you lots.”

If you miss the early registration deadline, you can still sign up until October 1 at the full price of $600. Please note that the free one-year membership will no longer be included.

For those unable to attend in person, an online version is available for $275 per login via Zoom, with registration closing October 20.

Whether you’re a company driver or an owner-operator, OOIDA’s Truck To Success seminar provides essential knowledge to help build a thriving trucking operation.

“People get into trucking to have a career, and we want to make sure they are able to do that,” King said. “There are things they might not have any idea about. If you’re a company driver or even leased-on, there’s certain things your motor carrier does that you’ll have to do (as an owner-operator). Those that want to expand or have a small fleet you definitely need to know this stuff.”

What sets Truck To Success apart is OOIDA’s extensive experience and insider business expertise.

“It’s just different. We have been doing this for 50 years, and there’s aspects of the business we know very well,” King noted. “We’re doing it day in and day out. You are talking to the experts. We’re also bringing in outside people who specialize in things like taxes.”

The seminar covers vital topics including business planning, lease-purchase risks, and regulatory compliance.

If you run a trucking fleet, one of your biggest challenges is managing operational costs. Expenses like fuel, maintenance, driver wages, and insurance pile up quickly, naturally. To keep profits healthy, fleet managers need smart, data-driven ways to control these costs. Here are some practical strategies to help you reduce expenses while running a more efficient fleet.

Know Your Biggest Expenses

According to the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), the main fleet cost centers are:

Fuel (largest variable expense)

Driver wages and benefits

Maintenance and repairs

Insurance premiums

Congestion-related costs

Fuel costs fluctuate but remain the most controllable expense, while insurance and maintenance continue to rise, to be honest.

1. Use Technology to Save Fuel

Using real-time fuel monitoring technology can save your fleet a lot of money. These tools help spot where fuel is wasted or if maintenance issues are hurting your mileage, without a doubt.

Here are some tips to get better fuel efficiency:

Watch for drivers idling too long or accelerating hard

Use GPS to find better routes and avoid traffic

Consider fuel-efficient or alternative fuel vehicles when possible

Participating in fuel discount programs and training drivers on fuel-efficient techniques—like steady speeds, proper tire inflation, and minimizing idle time—can typically save up to 10% on fleetwide fuel costs.

2. Stay Ahead with Preventive Maintenance

Maintenance and repair costs are on the rise, but sticking to a regular preventive maintenance schedule can prevent expensive breakdowns and keep your trucks on the road. It’s worth noting. Keeping digital maintenance logs helps catch problems early, so you can fix them before they become costly.

3. Keep Skilled Drivers Happy

Driver wages are going up, so it’s important to keep your good drivers happy to avoid costly turnover and training new hires. Use performance management tools to track safety and productivity, helping you reward and keep your best drivers, without a doubt.

4. Make the Most of Your Assets

Uneven use of trucks and lots of empty return trips waste fuel and money. Optimization software can help balance mileage and loads, making better use of your trucks. Load-matching tech finds freight close by to reduce empty trips and increase profits.

5. Manage Insurance and Compliance Costs

Insurance premiums are climbing with accident risks, but telematics that monitor driver habits can improve safety scores and lower insurance costs. Using digital tools to stay compliant helps fleets dodge fines and keep running smoothly.

6. Work Smarter with Automation

Efficiency isn’t just on the road—digital platforms make it easier for drivers, dispatchers, and service teams to communicate, reducing administrative tasks and delays. Automating tasks and expenses helps you monitor expenses and forecast better, without a doubt.

Managing expenses carefully means smart planning, balancing expenses with safety and performance. Leveraging technology to improve fuel consumption, maintaining your trucks, keeping drivers happy, making good use of assets, and automating operations can help your fleet stay competitive and profitable.

Life on the road as a truck driver is more than just miles and cargo. It’s a lifestyle that affects mental health, relationships, and financial stability. Whether you’re behind the wheel for a few days or weeks at a time, having the right podcast in your ear can help you feel more connected, supported, and informed.

These trucking podcasts go beyond trucking tips—they explore the deeper layers of what it means to live and work in this demanding profession.

Mental Health: Navigating the Emotional Road

Episodes explore topics such as stress management, coping with isolation, and finding support on the road.

Creating a powerful brand is a must for trucking carriers looking to stand out, build credibility, and nurture meaningful connections with both clients and drivers. At Truck Drivers USA (TDUSA), we understand the critical role branding plays in driving success for businesses. This guide outlines effective branding strategies for trucking carriers to establish a compelling and lasting identity.

Why Branding Matters in the Trucking Business

Branding goes far beyond logos or selecting a color scheme for your company. It represents your values, the reputation you cultivate, and the overall experience you offer. A strong, thoughtfully developed brand can:

Stand Out in a Crowded Market

A unique brand identity ensures your company is easily recognizable and memorable, even in a highly competitive industry.

Build Trust with Clients

Consistent, professional branding showcases your dependability and encourages potential clients to choose your services over others.

Attract Exceptional Drivers

Reputable branding is a magnet for qualified and skilled drivers seeking a reliable employer, helping you build a stronger and more cohesive team.

How to Create a Distinctive Brand for Your Trucking Business

1. Define Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP)

Your UVP is what sets you apart. Whether it’s specialized freight services, innovative technology, superior customer care, or eco-friendly initiatives, clearly articulate what makes your company stand out. A well-defined UVP helps craft a focused and impactful message for your target audience.

2. Develop a Clear Brand Strategy

Your strategy should be built on your mission, vision, and core values. These serve as a foundation for every branding effort, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints. When creating your strategy, consider factors like:

Who Is Your Target Audience?

What Brand Voice Should You Use?

How Does Your Competition Position Themselves?

Answering these questions will guide everything from messaging to presentation.

3. Create a Professional Visual Identity

Your visual assets say a lot about your business. Design a memorable logo and select a cohesive color palette that embodies your brand’s personality. Apply these visual elements consistently across:

Your fleet

Website and digital platforms

Marketing materials (flyers, brochures, business cards)

4. Build an Engaging Website

Think of your website as your company’s digital storefront. It needs to be:

Cleanly designed and mobile-friendly

Easy to navigate

Packed with key details like service offerings, contact information, and client testimonials

To establish credibility, provide value-rich content and ensure seamless user experience.

5. Utilize Social Media Effectively

Social media platforms are crucial for increasing brand awareness. Platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram allow you to:

Share industry trends and insights

Post updates about your company

Give behind-the-scenes peeks into operations

By engaging authentically and consistently, you can build stronger customer relationships and a wider audience.

6. Prioritize Exceptional Customer Service

How you treat your customers directly impacts your brand’s reputation. Deliver standout service by:

Offering personalized support

Providing status updates promptly

Being responsive to questions and issues

This kind of care boosts satisfaction and strengthens your brand identity as reliable and trustworthy.

7. Use Vehicle Branding

Your trucks are more than tools for transportation; they’re mobile advertisements. Adding your logo, slogan, and contact info on your fleet instantly amplifies visibility and reinforces brand recognition as your vehicles travel far and wide.

8. Engage Locally

Being active in your community is an excellent branding opportunity. Ways to connect include:

Sponsoring local events

Partnering with charitable organizations

Supporting causes that align with your values

Community participation shines a positive light on your business and showcases your commitment to making a difference.

Keeping Your Brand Relevant and Resilient

Branding isn’t a one-time effort; it’s an ongoing process that demands regular reevaluation. Take these steps to keep your branding strong:

Seek Feedback: Have regular check-ins with both clients and employees to identify what’s working and where improvements are needed.

Follow Industry Trends: Staying aware of the latest in the trucking industry ensures your branding remains relevant and resonates with your target audience.

Branding isn’t just about creating a sleek logo or a memorable tagline. For trucking businesses, it’s about shaping perceptions, building trust, and forging connections with both customers and drivers. Whether you’re a solo operator or managing an entire fleet, your brand defines your identity and sets you apart. With competition in the industry continuously growing, a robust and well-established brand can give you a significant edge over the rest.

Standing Out in a Crowded Industry

The trucking industry is densely packed with players, making it easy to blend into the background. But a powerful brand ensures you stay memorable. Think about what makes your company special. When potential clients think about your business, what image comes to mind? Your branding creates that first impression. A clearly defined brand highlights your uniqueness and helps you stick in people’s minds for all the right reasons.

Earning Customer Trust

Trust is a non-negotiable in the trucking. Clients want assurance that when they hire you, the job will be done efficiently and on time. Branding plays a pivotal role in earning that trust. Consistency across all touchpoints—whether it’s how your trucks look, how your team communicates, or how you manage deliveries—instills confidence. A trustworthy brand isn’t just about appearances; it’s about showing reliability and keeping your promises at every opportunity.

Attracting Top-Tier Drivers

Branding isn’t just about drawing in customers; it’s also key to attracting skilled, reliable drivers. Great drivers want to align themselves with companies that have sterling reputations and values that resonate with them. When your branding communicates respect, professionalism, and opportunities for growth, it positions your business as an employer of choice. A strong brand becomes a magnet for top talent in the industry.

Boosting the Impact of Your Marketing

Once your branding is solid, marketing becomes far more effective. Your advertising—whether it’s through social media, word-of-mouth, or online ads—becomes more cohesive and impactful. A defined brand ensures your materials convey a consistent message and attract an audience that aligns with your values. When your brand speaks clearly, your marketing resonates effortlessly.

How to Build a Memorable Trucking Brand

Craft a Distinct Visual Identity

First impressions are everything. Your logo, truck designs, and other visuals should stand out and communicate professionalism. A well-designed visual identity not only makes you memorable but also enhances your credibility in the eyes of customers and partners.

Develop a Clear Brand Message

What’s your mission? What values does your company stand for? Your messaging should communicate these answers at every opportunity—whether you’re sharing updates on social media or having a conversation with a client. Consistency in your brand message reinforces trust and keeps your business recognizable.

Foster a Customer-First Mentality

Your brand isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about how you treat your clients. Every interaction—a friendly phone call, resolving a complaint, or meeting a delivery deadline—is an opportunity to strengthen your brand’s reputation. Exceptional customer experiences keep your brand strong and trustworthy.

Putting Your Brand Into Action

Map Out Your Strategy

The foundation of any great brand is a clear vision. Define the values and mission you want your business to represent, and ensure every effort—from customer service to marketing—aligns with that vision.

Invest in Professional Design

Your branding visuals are the face of your business. Work with a designer skilled in creating logos, signage, and graphics that convey professionalism and set you apart.

Consistency Is Key

Ensure your brand is reflected in everything you do—from your communication style to your truck designs. Consistency reinforces reliability and makes your brand more recognizable.

Nurture Relationships

A successful brand thrives on strong relationships with drivers, customers, and partners. Engage authentically with everyone you work with, and your brand will only grow stronger.

Building a successful trucking brand doesn’t end with a pretty logo—it’s about creating meaningful connections, earning trust, and delivering consistency. Whether you’re starting out or scaling up, a strong brand has the power to elevate your business to new heights. Define your vision, stay true to your values, and ensure every experience is memorable. That’s how you build a brand that endures the test of time and drives your business forward.

For professional truckers, a rig isn’t just a vehicle—it’s your livelihood, your business, and your ticket to staying on the road. Keeping it in peak condition goes beyond avoiding fines; it’s about ensuring safety, cutting down on costly repairs, and staying on track with your schedule. Preventative maintenance (PM) is the key to sidestepping breakdowns and expensive fixes while protecting your career and peace of mind.

Why Preventative Maintenance Matters

Preventative maintenance means staying ahead of potential problems by conducting regular inspections, servicing, and minor repairs. It’s about checking oil, rotating tires, inspecting brakes, and keeping fluids at the right levels. Unlike reactive maintenance—which addresses issues after something breaks—PM is all about prevention, tackling trouble before it derails your day (and your budget).

The Real Cost of Neglecting Truck Maintenance

Skipping regular maintenance might seem like a time-saver, but the risks can be steep:

Unexpected Breakdowns The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) notes that breakdowns can cost truckers up to $1,000 per day in lost revenue.

Skyrocketing Repair Bills Small issues can snowball into costly ones—think an unchecked coolant leak leading to catastrophic engine failure.

Safety Risks Poor maintenance ups the chances of dangerous incidents like brake failures, tire blowouts, and steering issues, putting you and others at risk.

Compliance Fines The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandates routine inspections and upkeep. Failure to comply could result in fines, downtime, or even removal from service.

Essentials of a Strong Preventative Maintenance Plan

To keep your truck running smoothly, prioritize these critical areas:

Daily and Deep Inspections

Perform pre-trip and post-trip checks for visible issues, like worn tires and fluid leaks.

Include periodic deeper inspections to assess components like hoses, belts, and the electrical system.

Oil & Fluids

Stick to manufacturer-recommended oil changes (every 25,000–50,000 miles, depending on conditions).

Regularly check and refill coolant, transmission, and brake fluids to keep systems operating smoothly.

Tires

Keep tire pressure at optimal levels for better fuel efficiency and reduced wear.

Regularly rotate them and check for damage or uneven patterns.

Brakes

Inspect pads, rotors, and drums frequently for early signs of wear.

Make sure air brake systems are leak-free and working as they should.

Electrical Systems

Test your truck’s battery and charging systems to avoid power interruptions.

Check that all warning signals and lights are fully functional.

Seasonal Prep

Winterize your rig by using anti-gel additives and engine heaters.

Check cooling systems and AC performance before summer hits.

Why Your Effort Pays Off

Proactive maintenance isn’t just good for your truck; it’s good for your bottom line. Here’s why staying consistent with PM is worth it:

Minimizes unexpected downtime, letting you stay on track.

Prevents small issues from escalating into sky-high repair costs.

Improves fuel efficiency with well-maintained engines and properly inflated tires.

Enhances driver safety with dependable brakes, tires, and lights.

Extends your truck’s life span, delaying the need to replace expensive equipment.

Making Preventative Maintenance Work for You

Stick to a Maintenance Plan

Use apps or logs to schedule upkeep consistently.

Follow manufacturer PM intervals (typically every 15,000–30,000 miles).

Collaborate with a Trusted Mechanic

Partner with skilled technicians who know commercial vehicles inside and out.

Leverage Telematics

Modern telematics systems track performance and send real-time maintenance alerts.

Educate Yourself on the Basics

Learn simple fixes like checking fluids, replacing fuses, or tightening loose cables—it could save you time and money on the road.

Preventative maintenance isn’t just about keeping your vehicle running; it’s about protecting your livelihood, saving money, and staying safe. By adopting a regular PM schedule, whether you’re an independent owner-operator or part of a larger fleet, you’re making an investment in your future success.
