Many of the most recognized names in trucking are stepping up to make the industry more inclusive, and this year’s Top Companies for Women to Work in Transportation list highlights those efforts. The list, announced by Redefining the Road, the official magazine of the Women In Trucking Association (WIT), recognizes employers across trucking, logistics, and manufacturing that are creating real opportunities for women throughout the transportation workforce.

“The magazine created the award in 2018 to support an element of WIT’s mission: to promote the accomplishments of companies that are focused on the employment of women in the trucking industry,” said Jennifer Hedrick, CAE, president and CEO of WIT.

A total of 114 companies made this year’s list and will be recognized at the WIT Accelerate Conference and Expo, taking place November 9–12 in Dallas. International Motors, formerly Navistar, is sponsoring this year’s program.

According to Brian Everett, publisher of Redefining the Road, these companies share several core traits that help them stand out. “Earning a place on this distinguished list requires companies to embody the values and actions that define true commitment to attracting, retaining and engaging more skilled, qualified women as a core business strategy,” Everett said. He explained that the qualification process is thorough, starting with nomination reviews and ending with industry voting to determine the final honorees.

The companies recognized demonstrate a strong focus on workplace culture, competitive pay, flexibility, safety, and advancement. They also show commitment to mentorship programs, training opportunities, and leadership development aimed at helping women thrive in transportation careers.

Meet Roniqua Garrett—a hardworking mother from St. Louis whose dream of building a better life for her family just took a big leap forward. Roniqua, a mom of two, was recently selected to receive the $1,000 Future of Trucking Scholarship provided by the Driver Resource Center. Her story is not just about personal ambition; it’s about breaking new ground in the trucking industry and inspiring others to follow.

(Source: DRC) Roniqua Garett (right) and Roni Brassfield (left), MTC CDL instructor

Breaking Barriers: Roniqua’s Journey

Pursuing her CDL at MTC Truck Driver Training in St. Ann, Missouri, Roniqua made history as the first African American woman to be awarded this scholarship. She faces the future with confidence and genuine excitement, seeing truck driving as much more than a job.

“I love to travel, and I love driving, so it seemed perfect to me,” Roniqua shared. “This is a great opportunity to build a better life for me and my kids.”

Thanks to this scholarship, Roniqua has been able to cover a sizeable part of her training costs. That peace of mind means she can devote her focus to learning and getting ready for her career on the road. She already has a job lined up for after graduation.

A Bright Spot in Trucking

Selecting Roniqua for the scholarship was a proud moment for those at the Driver Resource Center. Brock, who is the Director of Enrollment, offered high praise and encouragement:

“We are excited to award Roni the Future of Trucking Scholarship,” he said. “She has such a positive attitude and is determined to succeed.”

Roniqua’s award recognizes her determination and shows other women, especially women of color, what’s possible with grit and drive.

Encouraging Diversity Behind the Wheel

The trucking workforce has long been dominated by men, but this is beginning to change. The Women in Trucking Association points out that only about 8% of drivers in the US are women, and fewer still are African American. Each step forward, like Roniqua’s, helps chip away at those gaps.

Scholarships like this are an important part of opening doors and encouraging more women and minorities to explore trucking as a career. They help highlight how diverse voices and talents make the industry stronger and more innovative.

Expanding Opportunities: About the Scholarship

Created in 2024 for St. Louis residents, the Future of Trucking Scholarship was so successful that it now accepts applicants from Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, South Carolina, and Kentucky. The main goal is to help ease the financial load for those starting out in the trucking trade, allowing more people to chase their ambitions in a growing, dynamic field.

If you live in one of these states and have thought about truck driving as a career, you can apply for the next round. The application deadline is August 30. Applicants are assessed on their passion for the industry, resilience, and commitment—traits Roniqua displays in abundance.

How to Apply

Interested in taking your first steps toward a career like Roniqua’s? The Driver Resource Center is currently accepting new applications for the Future of Trucking Scholarship. Details and application forms can be found directly on their website.

Why Roniqua’s Story Matters

Roniqua’s success isn’t just her own; it marks real progress for anyone dreaming of a place in an industry where women and minorities have often been underrepresented. Her story offers hope and shows that with the right support, anyone with heart and commitment can find their path in trucking.

If you’ve ever imagined a career on the road, this scholarship might be your starting point. The industry is calling for people like you—ready to work, ready to learn, and ready to make a difference. With new doors opening each year, now is the perfect time to start your own story.

The American Trucking Associations’ Women in Motion Council (WIM) has revealed its first-ever, industry-wide survey aimed at amplifying the voices of women within the trucking sector. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address recruitment and retention challenges and foster a more inclusive industry.

Understanding Women’s Experiences in Trucking

“We’re thrilled to launch this groundbreaking survey focused on the experiences of women in the trucking industry,” said Sarah Rajtik, ATA COO and co-chair of WIM. “While designed to highlight women’s perspectives, we welcome participation from everyone in the industry to help us gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in trucking. The insights gathered will shed light on key issues, helping us drive meaningful change and create a stronger future for women.”

The survey aims to collect diverse perspectives from trucking professionals at all levels and roles. By gathering this input, WIM seeks to uncover best practices for attracting women to the industry and creating environments that encourage long-term career growth.

A Broad Approach to Meaningful Insights

Open to all non-driving contributors within trucking, regardless of gender, the confidential survey focuses on various critical aspects, including entry points into trucking and pathways fostering career retention. By drawing on a wide range of voices, WIM can develop a clear picture of both the challenges and opportunities affecting women in today’s trucking industry.

Survey responses will play a crucial role in shaping the future of WIM’s initiatives. The data will inform policy recommendations, guide the development of impactful resources, and help establish industry standards tailored to supporting women in trucking.

What’s Next?

The WIM survey closes on April 18, and participants have the added incentive of being entered to win a pair of AirPods, awarded to three randomly selected respondents.

If you’re part of the industry and want to contribute to this change, take the survey here: WIM Survey.

“What’s great about NFI is that we care about each other. We care about our women drivers.” – Kaitlyn Cambria, Recruitment Marketing Manager at NFI Industries

In this episode of She Drives on Radio Nemo, Kaitlyn Cambria, Recruitment Marketing Manager at NFI Industries, shared insights into her work fostering an inclusive environment for women in trucking. As a proud dog owner of a two-year-old German Shepherd named Basil, Kaitlyn’s personal stories add a unique touch to her professional mission at NFI. But her focus on creating a safe, supportive community for drivers is what truly sets NFI apart.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-546318 aligncenter" src="https://truckdriversus.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Picture1-500x281.png" alt="Kaitlyn emphasized NFI’s dedication to safety, explaining how the company works diligently to ensure that women drivers feel secure on the road.
Building a Culture of Safety for Women Drivers at NFI

Kaitlyn emphasized NFI’s dedication to safety, explaining how the company works diligently to ensure that women drivers feel secure on the road. The approach goes beyond standard measures, offering 24/7 dispatch support for drivers and ensuring they have the tools to navigate each route with peace of mind.

For example, Kaitlyn shared a story about an NFI driver on a route who needed to stop and use the restroom. She was able to stay on the phone with her dispatcher until she was safely inside. It’s these small but impactful gestures that help women drivers feel protected and supported, knowing they are part of a team that truly cares.

Listening and Adapting: NFI’s Recruitment Strategy

As part of their commitment to supporting women, NFI also has an initiative with a focus group of women drivers from the East Coast, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. This group meets regularly to discuss issues specific to women in trucking and provides valuable feedback on how to improve the driving experience at NFI. Kaitlyn explained that this focus group is “a wide variety of women between, you know, being with the company for a short period of time or a long period of time… they are feeling that their ideas are coming into play, and their company is listening.”

This feedback loop is crucial for fostering a community where women drivers feel heard and valued, and their ideas are actively contributing to company policies.

Kaitlyn also explained that NFI relies heavily on feedback from current drivers to guide its recruitment efforts and policies. According to her, listening to the experiences of existing drivers is a key part of attracting new talent. She stated, “The one thing that I do and what my team does is listen to current drivers that we have… that’s what we can put in the forefront between our marketing, making sure we have the correct stories that will resonate with other females.”

A Commitment to Women in Trucking

Through its commitment to listening to female drivers and creating a supportive environment, NFI is setting a new standard for women in the trucking industry. By prioritizing both recruitment and retention, NFI aims to continue fostering a sense of community and safety for women drivers.

Imagine a world where the trucking industry opens its doors wider to women, especially in smaller companies. That world is becoming reality, according to a new study from the Women In Trucking Association. Their 2024-25 WIT Index uncovers that smaller trucking companies are leading the charge in hiring female drivers, even surpassing larger firms.

This isn’t just another statistic to glance over; it’s a revelation that flips an old assumption on its head. For years, people believed that bigger trucking companies naturally employed more women drivers. But now, the data proves otherwise. Smaller enterprises are championing diversity with women making up 12.5% of professional drivers holding CDLs—a figure that sees a noticeable dip in larger companies.

Let’s break down the numbers: medium to large firms report a female driver presence of 10.5%, while major companies fall further behind with only 7%. These figures reflect women who are navigating medium- to heavy-duty trucks, demonstrating a significant presence where it truly matters.

But this movement isn’t just on the roads; it’s reaching boardrooms too. Women account for a significant part of trucking leadership—occupying 28% of executive roles and 34.5% of supervisory positions. They’re not stopping there, grabbing hold of HR, talent management, and even dispatcher roles with a noticeable 74.5% and 38.5% in these areas, respectively. However, there’s room for growth in technical positions with women comprising only 4% of diesel technicians.

This revelation comes from a survey of organizations of all sizes in transportation conducted between August 2023 and April 2024, with WIT drawing from a diverse pool of 350 organizations. The participants were largely for-hire motor carriers and private fleet companies, making up over half of the surveyed group. It’s a revealing portrayal of how the industry is evolving, with smaller firms lighting the way towards a more gender-inclusive workplace.

As these changes continue to unfold, the trucking industry is poised not only to embrace a broader workforce but to weave richer stories of progress and inclusion along every mile.
