Inside the Whitmore Lake Girl Scout building last week, a group of young girls moved between pre-trip inspections, trucking conversations, craft stations, and the WITney® Educational Trailer while getting an early look at an industry many of them had never seriously considered before.

The May 16 event, called “Trucks Are For Girls,” was coordinated through Women In Trucking and Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan. Around 50 girls and their parents attended the event, according to WIT Director of Driver Engagement Jenny Fall, who organized the program alongside Moon Star Express Director of Human Resources and Safety Renee Osear.

Some girls arrived curious about truck driving itself. Others knew very little about the transportation industry before walking through the doors.

By the end of the event, many had spent time learning pre-trip basics, asking questions about trucking jobs, touring the WITney® Educational Trailer, and hearing directly from industry professionals about careers connected to transportation.

“I got to talk with girls who didn’t know anything about the careers in trucking to girls who were confident they wanted to drive someday,” said Fall. “These girls were 10 to 12 years old, and their excitement, engagement, and overall attitudes made this day so special.”

The Event Focused on Showing How Broad Trucking Careers Really Are

Throughout the day, organizers introduced participants to different parts of the industry instead of presenting trucking as a single career path.

Girls rotated through activity stations that included a pre-trip inspection exercise with a quiz component, craft activities, yoga sessions led by Operation Broga Executive Director Maggie Wolarik, and a full walkthrough experience inside the WITney® trailer.

The conversations surrounding those activities often expanded beyond driving itself.

According to Fall, one parent shared concerns about helping her daughter find future career opportunities outside a traditional four-year college route. That discussion became an opportunity to explain how trucking companies rely on operations staff, customer service teams, logistics personnel, safety departments, and many other positions alongside professional drivers.

“One mom shared that her daughter just wasn’t into school, so she wanted to help her find something that didn’t need a 4-year degree,” Fall said. “I got to talk with her about all the things in trucking that I’ve gotten to see from driving a truck to operations and customer service roles. I say it all the time: the future of trucking is bright!”

Industry Groups Continue Looking for New Ways to Reach Younger Audiences

Events centered around younger students have become more visible across parts of the trucking industry as organizations search for ways to build earlier awareness around transportation careers.

For many families, trucking still feels limited to what they see from the highway. Programs like “Trucks Are For Girls” are designed to widen that perspective by introducing students to the variety of jobs supporting freight movement every day.

That includes careers connected to dispatching, maintenance, safety, recruiting, logistics, customer support, and operations management in addition to driving itself.

At the end of the event, participants received Women In Trucking Girl Scout patches along with dolls wearing personalized I Heart Trucking® shirts.

For organizers, the larger objective was not simply hosting a one-day event. The goal was to help more young girls leave with a stronger understanding that transportation offers multiple career paths long before they begin making long-term career decisions.

The Truck Drivers USA editorial team creates practical, driver-focused content covering industry topics, job trends, and real-world decisions that impact drivers at every stage of their careers. Each article is written to provide clear, accurate information that drivers can use.

A new round of scholarship funding is now available for students planning to step into the diesel and heavy-duty repair side of the trucking industry.

The Arkansas Trucking Association is currently accepting applications for its technician scholarship program, with submissions open through April 17. The opportunity is aimed at students preparing to enter medium and heavy-duty truck technician programs within the state.

“The Carl Tapp Memorial Scholarship has invested over $100,000 in Arkansas’ future technicians,” said ATA President Shannon Newton. “By aiding access to a quality education, we’re not only equipping young people — we’re ensuring Arkansas has the skilled workforce needed to keep commerce moving safely and efficiently. Each scholarship recipient represents both individual opportunity and our commitment to Arkansas’ economic future.”

Supporting the Next Generation of Truck Technicians

The scholarship program was created to strengthen the pipeline of qualified technicians, a role that continues to be critical across fleets, independent shops, and dealerships. Reliable maintenance and repair work directly impacts uptime, safety, and overall operating costs across the industry.

The Carl Tapp Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2017 to help grow that workforce and encourage more students to pursue technical careers tied to trucking. According to the association, the program is designed to support education while promoting higher standards across maintenance operations.

The scholarship honors Carl Tapp, the first chairman of the ATA Maintenance and Technology Council, who was recognized for mentoring and supporting emerging talent in the field.

Who Is Eligible to Apply

Students interested in applying must meet several requirements:

Be a graduating senior from an accredited high school

Plan to enroll in a medium and heavy-duty truck technician program

Attend an Arkansas-based institution

Commit to a program lasting at least two semesters

Eligible students can begin their coursework in August 2026 or January 2027.

Timeline and What Comes Next

Applications remain open until April 17. The selected recipient for the 2026 scholarship is expected to be announced in May.

Additional details about the application process and eligibility requirements are available here.

Why This Matters Across the Industry

The demand for skilled technicians continues to rise as equipment becomes more advanced and maintenance standards tighten. Keeping trucks on the road depends on qualified people who know how to diagnose, repair, and maintain modern systems under real working conditions.

Efforts like this scholarship program help bring more trained professionals into the field, supporting safer operations and more reliable equipment across the industry.

For fleet managers in heavy-duty trucking, finding opportunities for meaningful industry conversations can be rare. Traditional trade shows often feel like a whirlwind of handshakes and brochures. The Heavy Duty Trucking Exchange (HDTX) offers a different approach. This small, focused event brings together fleet decision-makers and industry suppliers for in-depth discussions, educational sessions, and structured one-on-one meetings.

The 2026 HDTX will take place September 23–25 in Scottsdale, Arizona, and fewer than 50 fleets have been selected to participate. Those chosen attend as guests of Heavy Duty Trucking, with airfare, hotel, meals, and programming included.

Who Attends HDTX?

HDTX has grown since its launch in 2017 into a gathering of diverse heavy-duty trucking professionals. Attendees typically include fleet owners and executives of Class 7-8 fleets, as well as managers overseeing maintenance, equipment specification, safety, compliance, and technology initiatives. The event is designed for those responsible for operational decisions and seeking solutions to day-to-day challenges in the trucking industry.

Structured Supplier Meetings

A standout feature of HDTX is its “speed dating” style one-on-one meetings with suppliers. Fleet managers get 10 minutes per session to present operational challenges and explore how suppliers’ solutions might fit. If a conversation isn’t a match, participants move on to the next meeting, keeping discussions productive and focused.

Education and Industry Insights

HDTX also offers educational sessions led by Heavy Duty Trucking editors and industry experts. Topics at previous events have included:

Maintenance and equipment specification

Safety and compliance

Driver recruiting and retention

Sustainability

Autonomous trucks

Leveraging fleet data and artificial intelligence

One of the event highlights is the HDT Truck Fleet Innovator Awards, which recognize fleets driving innovation in trucking. The awards ceremony is followed by a panel discussion moderated by HDT editors, offering attendees insight into the strategies and successes of top-performing fleets.

Networking Beyond the Conference Room

Beyond structured meetings and sessions, HDTX encourages networking through meals, receptions, and social activities. The small, intimate format allows fleet managers to build genuine connections with peers and suppliers, something often missing at larger conventions.

All-Expenses-Paid Participation

Fleet managers selected for HDTX attend on an all-expenses-paid basis. This includes:

Round-trip economy airfare to Phoenix

Two-night hotel stay at the Scottsdale Resort

Ground transportation between the airport and the resort

Scheduled meals and receptions

Note that incidentals, parking, and transportation to and from the attendee’s home airport are not included.

Why HDTX Matters for Fleet Managers

For fleet managers looking to stay ahead in the industry, HDTX provides several advantages:

Educational sessions with industry experts – curated by HDT editors specifically for fleet management challenges.

Peer-to-peer networking – build relationships and exchange ideas in a setting designed for meaningful conversation.

Insight from leading suppliers – learn about technologies and solutions shaping the future of heavy-duty trucking.

One-on-one meetings with suppliers – focused discussions to address operational challenges.

Truck Fleet Innovator Awards – recognize industry-leading fleets and gain perspective from award-winning executives during a panel discussion.

For fleet managers and industry stakeholders, HDTX represents a concentrated opportunity to connect, learn, and explore innovations that can impact fleet operations.

The Truckload Carriers Association has opened the application window for its scholarship program, giving students connected to the truckload industry a chance to receive financial support for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 20.

Supporting Trucking Families Through Education

The TCA Scholarship Fund has been in place for more than 50 years and continues to focus on students whose families work within the truckload sector. The program is supported largely by carriers, associate members, and individuals across the TCA network.

“TCA’s scholarship program is a powerful example of our members investing in the future of the truckload industry,” said Joey Hogan, TCA Scholarship Fund Committee chair and Covenant Logistics board member. “With the continued support of our donors and the inclusion of junior colleges, this program delivers real value to TCA members. I encourage everyone to share this opportunity with their employees and families.”

Who Is Eligible to Apply

The scholarship program is open to full-time students attending accredited two-year or four-year colleges, including junior colleges. Applicants must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and be enrolled as a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior.

Eligibility extends to:

Employees of TCA member companies

Independent contractors affiliated with TCA member companies

Children, grandchildren, or spouses of qualifying employees or contractors

Scholarships awarded during this cycle apply to the 2026–2027 academic year.

Scholarship Award Amounts

Funding amounts vary by program length.

For four-year colleges, awards can reach up to $6,250 per academic year. Students attending two-year programs may receive up to $2,000 per year.

“For over 50 years, the TCA Scholarship Fund has been helping students with connections to the truckload industry,” TCA said. “Much of the program’s support comes from within the truckload TCA family—companies and individuals who are committed to our truckload community’s future. The fund awards up to $6,250 per year, per full-time four-year college student and up to $2,000 per full-time two-year college student. In the current 2025-2026 academic year, the TCA Scholarship Fund’s Board of Trustees awarded a record 62 students scholarships totaling over $175,000.”

Why This Matters to Drivers and Carriers

Education costs continue to rise, and for many trucking families, balancing school expenses with the realities of the job can be difficult. The TCA Scholarship Fund is designed to ease that pressure while keeping families connected to the industry long term.

“The TCA Scholarship Fund is an incredible member benefit and a great way to engage employees and their families,” said Zander Gambill, TCA’s vice president of membership & outreach. “I encourage all carriers and associate members to spread the word and take advantage of this opportunity.”

How to Apply or Get More Information

Complete application details and forms are available through the TCA Scholarship Fund here.

Questions about the application process can be directed to OFIC at scholarships@ofic.org.

At the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), the phrase raising the bar is often used when discussing safety, professionalism, profitability, and the reputation of trucking. But as TCA leadership points out, raising the bar also requires raising the floor. In other words, more carriers — especially those striving to operate responsibly- need access to the tools, knowledge, and community support that will help them succeed.

That’s the idea behind a new initiative from TCA. For a limited time, newly established motor carriers and private fleets can receive 75% off their first year of membership dues.

Why now

TCA explains that this opportunity is possible because the association is in a strong financial position, supported by sound leadership and the continued investment of long-term members. That stability has made it possible to launch a strategic program designed to expand membership, strengthen advocacy, and build a stronger future for the entire industry.

The association notes that this discount comes at a time when trucking is facing some of its toughest challenges — including lawsuit abuse, cargo theft, predatory regulation, and workforce shortages. Problems of this scale, TCA emphasizes, cannot be solved in isolation.

A collective lift

TCA believes that bringing more quality carriers into the fold benefits everyone. With additional members engaged, advocacy efforts grow stronger, benchmarking becomes sharper, and overall industry standards rise.

Importantly, the organization stresses that this initiative isn’t about chasing numbers. It’s about connecting with the carriers who are committed to doing things the right way but may not have had the opportunity to fully engage before.

What members gain

Carriers who take advantage of this initiative will have full access to TCA’s benefits right from the start, including:

Industry-leading education and professional development

Profitability benchmarking and peer groups through TPP

Advocacy on Capitol Hill and with federal regulators

Networking opportunities that build lasting business relationships

Recognition programs that highlight safety, innovation, and driver excellence

This is not a limited or trial membership. It’s a full introduction to the TCA experience, built to bring more engaged carriers into the community and strengthen the truckload sector as a whole.

A call to action for current members

TCA stresses that this effort will only be as impactful as the momentum behind it. Members who have already benefited from TCA’s programs, training, and advocacy are encouraged to help spread the word. That could mean referring a carrier, mentoring a new member, or sharing the opportunity within their networks.

The association sees this as a rare opportunity to grow not only in size but in strength and substance. By welcoming more of the right carriers, the trucking community can continue raising standards and building a more unified industry voice.

Those interested in learning more can reach out to Erica Bledsoe, TCA’s Membership Engagement Manager, at 571-444-0314 or ebledsoe@truckload.org, or visit truckload.org.

At Aim Transportation Solutions’ headquarters in Girard, Ohio, the rumble of big rigs was joined by the laughter of kids as the company hosted its first “I Want to Work in Trucking When I Grow Up” event—designed to spark interest in commercial driving from a young age.

The special career day invited local children, including a Girl Scout troop and employees’ families, to get a firsthand look at what life is really like behind the wheel. From climbing into the cab of a semi to test-driving a high-tech simulator, the experience blended fun with future-focused learning.

Kids explored sleeper berths, played with balloon-powered trucks, and raced through hands-on craft activities. But at the heart of it all was a powerful message: trucking is a path worth exploring—and it’s never too early to be curious about where it can take you.

“We wanted to open kids’ eyes to career paths they might not hear about in school,” said Jessica Bochy-Deane, Aim’s Vice President of Marketing. “College is a great path for many, but it’s not the only one. Skilled trades like trucking offer fulfilling, stable careers right here in their communities. This was about expanding horizons and sparking curiosity.”

One of the biggest hits of the day was the WITney simulator trailer from the Women In Trucking Association. The immersive driving experience lets kids safely navigate turns, braking, and other road challenges behind a virtual wheel, offering a realistic taste of what truck driving involves.

Getting WITney to Girard took some real-life trucking hustle. Amanda DeMartinis, Aim’s Assistant Safety Director and a former driver, personally hauled the simulator up from Tennessee to make sure the kids got the full experience.

“It’s not always about a four-year degree,” said DeMartinis. “Trucking gave me a career I’m proud of — full of independence, new places, and challenges that built my confidence. I want kids to know there are many ways to succeed.”

Throughout the day, Aim team members—from dispatch to operations—shared their own paths into the industry, helping kids (and their parents) understand just how many different opportunities exist beyond the driver’s seat.

Jenny Fall, Director of Driver Engagement and Women in Trucking at Aim, joined DeMartinis in helping kids navigate the simulator and learn about life on the road. For the young girls in attendance, the impact was especially significant.

“A lot of girls just aren’t exposed to trucking as a career path,” said Trisha Mossor, Aim’s Business Development Manager and leader of the visiting Girl Scout troop. “Events like this help them see it’s a real option, and one they can be excited about.”

Scott Fleming, Aim’s President, reinforced the bigger vision behind the event. “Trucking is built on hard work, determination, and opportunity,” he said. “It doesn’t matter where you start—if you bring the right attitude, you can go far in this industry. Showing kids that message early, in a hands-on and fun way, is how we help build the future.”

Before heading home, each child received a custom Women In Trucking Girl Scout patch—a small keepsake with big meaning, marking what may be their first step toward a career that moves the world.

Imagine how far a seemingly simple promise can go. For Chris Clardy, this promise ignited a chain of events that led to a thriving career in trucking, built on determination, mentorship, and transformative training. His story underscores the life-changing potential of truck driver training programs offered by CVTA (Commercial Vehicle Training Association) member schools.

Captivated by a Semi-Truck

For Chris Clardy, the trucking dream began when he was just 12 years old. Visiting the Mt. Comfort Air Show with his family, his attention wasn’t on the soaring planes as one might expect. Instead, he was drawn to one exhibit — a semi-truck that stood as a symbol of strength and connection. The polished machine mesmerized young Chris, sparking an early desire to one day become a part of the trucking world.

It was also at the air show where he first came across C1 Truck Driver Training, the school that would later be instrumental in fulfilling his aspirations. Although the seeds of a dream were planted that day, life had a more complex road in store for him.

A Life-Changing Gesture

Not long after the air show, Chris was dealt a challenging hand. He faced severe medical hardships that put his young life on pause and left him hospitalized. For a child brimming with dreams, such obstacles were daunting.

But during these difficult times, a small but profoundly impactful gesture instilled hope in Chris. Chris Welch, the owner of C1 Truck Driver Training, sent him a heartfelt note. Included in the letter were words of encouragement and a promise that stayed with Chris for years. Welch assured him, saying, “Once you’re well enough, you’ll be treated to a ride in a semi-truck at our school.”

This promise wasn’t just about a truck ride; it symbolized belief in Chris’s potential and gave him a goal to hold on to.

Coming Back to a Dream

Fast forward nearly two decades. Despite life’s twists and turns, Chris never forgot the promise that had meant so much to him. When the time was right, he returned to C1 Truck Driver Training, determined to finally achieve the dream he had nurtured since childhood.

Chris arrived prepared, with his CDL (Commercial Driver License) permit and DOT (Department of Transportation) physical certification already in place. He wasn’t just chasing a dream — he was committed to making it reality.

With laser focus and tireless determination, Chris excelled during his training. He graduated as the top student in his class and passed his CDL test on the first attempt. His hard work earned him his first professional trucking role at PAM Transport, marking the successful completion of his first major milestone. But the story didn’t end there.

From Employee to Business Owner

For many, achieving childhood dreams offers a satisfying conclusion. But for Chris Clardy, it was the beginning of a greater mission. Driven by ambition, he continued to expand his horizons within the trucking industry.

Today, Chris not only drives trucks — he owns a fleet of them. Transitioning from employee to employer, he built a successful business that now provides opportunities for other aspiring drivers. His experience and insights make him a mentor to others, proof that success in trucking goes far beyond hauling freight.

Chris’s story exemplifies the ripple effect of quality education, resilience, and the right support system. Thanks to the foundational training he received at C1 Truck Driver Training and the mentorship that guided him, he is making a lasting impact in the trucking community.

Through programs offered by CVTA’s extensive member network, countless individuals like Chris Clardy are able to turn aspirations into achievements.

Meet Roniqua Garrett—a hardworking mother from St. Louis whose dream of building a better life for her family just took a big leap forward. Roniqua, a mom of two, was recently selected to receive the $1,000 Future of Trucking Scholarship provided by the Driver Resource Center. Her story is not just about personal ambition; it’s about breaking new ground in the trucking industry and inspiring others to follow.

(Source: DRC) Roniqua Garett (right) and Roni Brassfield (left), MTC CDL instructor

Breaking Barriers: Roniqua’s Journey

Pursuing her CDL at MTC Truck Driver Training in St. Ann, Missouri, Roniqua made history as the first African American woman to be awarded this scholarship. She faces the future with confidence and genuine excitement, seeing truck driving as much more than a job.

“I love to travel, and I love driving, so it seemed perfect to me,” Roniqua shared. “This is a great opportunity to build a better life for me and my kids.”

Thanks to this scholarship, Roniqua has been able to cover a sizeable part of her training costs. That peace of mind means she can devote her focus to learning and getting ready for her career on the road. She already has a job lined up for after graduation.

A Bright Spot in Trucking

Selecting Roniqua for the scholarship was a proud moment for those at the Driver Resource Center. Brock, who is the Director of Enrollment, offered high praise and encouragement:

“We are excited to award Roni the Future of Trucking Scholarship,” he said. “She has such a positive attitude and is determined to succeed.”

Roniqua’s award recognizes her determination and shows other women, especially women of color, what’s possible with grit and drive.

Encouraging Diversity Behind the Wheel

The trucking workforce has long been dominated by men, but this is beginning to change. The Women in Trucking Association points out that only about 8% of drivers in the US are women, and fewer still are African American. Each step forward, like Roniqua’s, helps chip away at those gaps.

Scholarships like this are an important part of opening doors and encouraging more women and minorities to explore trucking as a career. They help highlight how diverse voices and talents make the industry stronger and more innovative.

Expanding Opportunities: About the Scholarship

Created in 2024 for St. Louis residents, the Future of Trucking Scholarship was so successful that it now accepts applicants from Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, South Carolina, and Kentucky. The main goal is to help ease the financial load for those starting out in the trucking trade, allowing more people to chase their ambitions in a growing, dynamic field.

If you live in one of these states and have thought about truck driving as a career, you can apply for the next round. The application deadline is August 30. Applicants are assessed on their passion for the industry, resilience, and commitment—traits Roniqua displays in abundance.

How to Apply

Interested in taking your first steps toward a career like Roniqua’s? The Driver Resource Center is currently accepting new applications for the Future of Trucking Scholarship. Details and application forms can be found directly on their website.

Why Roniqua’s Story Matters

Roniqua’s success isn’t just her own; it marks real progress for anyone dreaming of a place in an industry where women and minorities have often been underrepresented. Her story offers hope and shows that with the right support, anyone with heart and commitment can find their path in trucking.

If you’ve ever imagined a career on the road, this scholarship might be your starting point. The industry is calling for people like you—ready to work, ready to learn, and ready to make a difference. With new doors opening each year, now is the perfect time to start your own story.

Attracting the next wave of professional drivers is an urgent goal facing the trucking industry. This June, Patterson High School in California became the meeting ground for educators from across nine U.S. states and Canada as they took part in the two-day ‘Train the Trainer’ event, hosted by Next Gen Trucking (NGT). With a mix of hands-on activities, exposure to the latest training technology, and opportunities for real-world insight, the event focused on preparing teachers to start or strengthen high school trucking programs—an essential step for the industry’s future.

Building a Pathway for Students

The driving force behind the initiative is NGT co-founders David Dein and Lindsay Trent. Since starting a pioneering high school trucking curriculum at Patterson in 2017, NGT has helped spread similar opportunities to more than 50 schools nationwide. Their core aim is to make transportation and logistics careers accessible—and appealing—for young people, ensuring they leave school with skills in high demand. Dein’s vision has turned into a movement, fueled by federal, state, and private support.

Real Stories and Connections

Trevor McKee, an instructor with the Manitoba Trucking Association, traveled from Canada to experience the event firsthand. Reflecting on the experience, he said, “Engaging with Dave, Glenn, and their students provided a meaningful perspective on the potential direction of our own developing program. Additionally, connecting with fellow educators allowed me to gather innovative ideas and best practices that we can implement both now and in the future.” These kinds of connections aren’t just networking—they’re turning points for building a broader community of educators committed to making trucking a classroom reality.

Immersive Activities That Make a Difference

Attendees didn’t just sit through presentations—they got out of their seats and into real (and simulated) vehicles. One key exercise saw participants try to drive a golf cart while wearing “Fatal Vision” goggles. The task mimicked impaired driving, highlighting for future teachers the immediate impact of safety lessons on students. The hands-on portions of the event are meant to be unforgettable and easy to replicate, so trainers can inspire their own classes with the same sense of urgency and responsibility.

Embracing Technology in Truck Driver Training

One of the highlights was the discussion and demonstration around advanced driver training simulators, with Enrique Mar from Advanced Training Systems sharing how artificial intelligence is modernizing instruction and boosting safety. On a guided tour at PHS, educators examined the latest ATS simulators, experiencing the value of virtual reality in helping students build confidence and agility behind the wheel—well before they ever approach a real truck.

Glenn Ecalne, who teaches supply chain and financial literacy at PHS, also showcased how his program’s blend of classroom theory and practical experience sets a template for other schools. Patterson’s supply chain program provided an eye-opening example for many visitors, some of whom hope to launch similar initiatives back home.

Open Dialogue and Shared Insight

All through the event, teachers swapped stories and advice, cementing a sense of partnership. Panels included current and former students, giving educators direct feedback about what works and what doesn’t in trucking education. The event wrapped up with a Q&A session that turned into an organic brainstorming hour. As McKee succinctly shared, “I highly recommend this training to others in the field. For those already delivering similar programs, this experience offers valuable insights into the transportation, logistics, and supply chain industries.”

Commitment from Leaders and Sponsors

Backing from sponsors—including Advanced Training Systems, Tenstreet, and SambaSafety—was instrumental. Just as crucial was the enthusiastic endorsement of Dr. Reyes Gauna, superintendent of the Patterson Joint Unified School District, who assured educators: his office stands ready to help others develop robust technical and vocational curriculums.

Why Early Trucking Education Matters

With the trucking sector facing chronic driver shortages, reaching students before graduation is more important than ever. Most can’t get a commercial driver’s license while still in high school, but programs like those created by NGT offer essential exposure, technical knowledge, and hands-on safety training. Many students who have passed through these programs have gone on to earn CDLs and begin their careers in the industry.

By nurturing this early interest and equipping students with practical skills, NGT-supported schools are addressing real workforce gaps while giving young people a launchpad into one of the economy’s most essential industries.
