Truck drivers and fleet managers, it’s time to show your support for the veterans behind the wheel.

Online voting is officially open for the Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award, recognizing military veterans who have made an outstanding transition into professional trucking.

Voting began November 1 and runs through Veterans Day, November 11, giving the public the chance to help decide which veteran driver will take home this year’s top honor.

The award is a joint effort from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program, Kenworth Truck Company, and Fastport. It celebrates service members who have successfully shifted from military life to careers in commercial trucking.

You can cast your vote now at TransitionTrucking.org/vote.

Meet the 2025 Transition Trucking Finalists

Charles Jones Jr., U.S. Army (E-7), Roehl Transport

Charles Jones Jr. is a 20-year U.S. Army veteran who served as an unmanned aircraft systems operator, instructor, standards operator, and platoon sergeant, completing three combat deployments to Iraq and two rotations to South Korea.
A husband to Katrina and father to Alvin and Monica, Jones graduated from the Georgia Driving Academy in December 2024 and began his professional driving career with Roehl Transport in early 2025.

Macy Mattice, U.S. Army (E-4), Melton Truck Lines

Macy Mattice served from 2010 to 2018 as an 88M motor transport operator specializing in heavy equipment transportation.
Originally from Winter Springs, Florida, she now drives flatbed for Melton Truck Lines and lives near Jacksonville with her son, Rusty.

Mark Scriven, U.S. Army (E-6), Stevens Transport

A former staff sergeant and Patriot missile operator/maintainer, Mark Scriven spent nine years in the U.S. Army, earning multiple Army achievement medals and recognition as a combat lifesaver.
Today, he works as a driver and trainer with Stevens Transport, using his leadership experience to mentor new drivers. The father of three also welcomed a daughter in August.

Honoring Service and Skill Behind the Wheel

Each year, Transition Trucking highlights the top rookie military veterans who have made their mark in trucking. The finalists are selected through a nomination and review process, followed by a public vote that helps determine the winner.

The winner will be announced on December 12 during a ceremony at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

The grand prize is a new Kenworth T680 equipped with a 76-inch sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain, featuring a 455-horsepower MX-13 engine, TX-12 automated transmission, and DX-40 tandem rear axles. The runner-up will receive $10,000, and the second runner-up will take home $5,000.

This program continues to spotlight the impact veterans make in the trucking industry, bringing discipline, dedication, and leadership from the military to America’s highways.

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) recently collaborated with AIM Transportation Solutions for a hands-on, educational event at AIM’s Girard, Ohio headquarters. The goal of the program was to introduce young people to the wide variety of careers available in the trucking industry and spark interest in pursuing them in the future.

On June 24, about 50 children participated in the event, including local Girl Scout troops and the children of AIM employees. Attendees explored multiple aspects of trucking careers through WIT’s WITney Educational Trailer, which provided an interactive experience and a driving simulator to test basic truck operation skills.

“This event was truly a framework for success,” said Jenny Fall, WIT’s director of driver engagement. “Since planning began, the coordinators were full of energy and excitement about sharing careers in trucking with the young people in their community. By opening the program to not only the Girl Scouts but also the children of employees of AIM Transportation, so many others got to experience the activities and try out the driving simulator, testing their skills on the road. I always enjoy seeing the reaction from the kids as they start thinking that trucking might be a pretty cool thing to be a part of.”

Fall emphasized that AIM Transportation Solutions played a key role in making the event possible by hosting it at their headquarters. AIM, a full-service truck leasing company with operations across 16 states in the U.S., provided support and resources to help make the program engaging and educational.

“Aim is constantly seeking new ways to educate the next generation about the exciting opportunities within the trucking industry and the trades overall,” said Trisha Mosser, AIM Transportation’s business development manager and event coordinator. “My primary goal was to present information to my Girl Scout Troop to help them see trucking as a real, rewarding career path. What started as a small initiative quickly grew with the involvement of Aim employees and their children. Now, we have an entire group of young people inspired by how fun and empowering it can be to get behind the wheel of a truck. Mission accomplished!”

WIT has a long-standing relationship with the Girl Scouts of America. According to Fall, the association regularly partners with local councils to host educational events where girls can learn about the trucking industry and earn a WIT patch. These Girl Scout Patch Program events typically feature hands-on activities, interactive learning in the WITney Trailer, and opportunities to hear from women leaders in trucking.

The program emphasizes not only the career opportunities available in the industry but also the importance of safety around large vehicles. Since the first event in October 2014, more than 1,500 girls across the U.S. and Canada have participated and earned their WIT patches, gaining firsthand insight into the possibilities within the trucking field.

Yuma Haidara has spent more than a decade behind the wheel as an over-the-road (OTR) professional truck driver. Today, she serves as both a mentor and certified driver trainer for Walmart Transportation in Raymond, New Hampshire, helping shape the next generation of truck drivers with the same determination that fueled her own career.

As of May 2025, Walmart operates around 4,605 stores across the United States, including Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, and discount stores, and more than 10,500 locations worldwide in 19 countries. At the heart of this massive network are drivers like Haidara, whose story is rooted in resilience, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Taking the First Step Into Trucking

Haidara’s trucking career began unexpectedly. While frequently passing a truck driving school on her daily routes, curiosity eventually got the better of her.

“I didn’t even know what I thought I could get out of it, but I just went in and started asking questions,” she recalls. “They told me that my GI bill would cover my training, so I came back on Monday and got started.”

From there, she committed fully, leaving her possessions in storage and moving forward with her new path.

“I put everything in storage and felt that I could retrieve it anytime,” she says. “Well, 12 years later, I am still trucking.”

A Veteran Thriving in a Male-Dominated Field

Before trucking, Haidara served as a Navy Seabee Combat Veteran with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The physically demanding work prepared her for the challenges of trucking—another field often dominated by men.

“The military set me up to work in a man’s world,” she explains. “There were so few of us women who could do the job well. It was very heavy lifting. So, when I went to truck driving school, I was like, Oh, here we go again, back into a male-dominated arena.”

Championing Women in Trucking

Haidara has made it her mission to encourage more women to pursue careers in trucking. Her simple but powerful message:

“If I can do it, you can do it.”

She has inspired many to take the leap.

She urges those considering the industry to stop hesitating:

“Just do it! What are you waiting for?”

For Haidara, trucking brought not just financial stability, but peace of mind.

“My life became so peaceful. I became a better teammate. I realized that I needed to take care of myself at some point, and this job provided the opportunity to do so. I have accomplished many amazing things in my life. These opportunities are endless and available to anyone who wants to be a part of this wonderful trucking industry.”

Balancing Work, Advocacy, and Giving Back

When she’s not on the road, Haidara dedicates her time to non-profits, especially those focused on mental health, a cause that holds deep personal meaning for her.

“This is where my heart is, and Walmart not only supports my mission but also gives me the time I need to do the things that I like. Trucking helps me get to where I need to go to help others, gives me the freedom to help them, and gives me the time to do so.”

Training the Next Generation

Walmart’s Associate-to-Driver Program, a 12-week training initiative, allows employees from any department to earn their CDL and train directly with Walmart drivers. Haidara plays a key role, preparing new drivers not only for the road but for success in the company.

“It is so cool to see them at a less stressful time, and they are like, ‘OMG, you were there.’ It is so great to see people go from 0 to 100, and I have seen it so many times.”

Standing With Veterans

Haidara’s dedication to fellow veterans is unwavering. She actively participates in multiple veteran-focused non-profits and projects—using her platform to support those who served.

“I am a big advocate for Veterans, and whatever I can do for them, I will!”

Her story reflects more than a successful trucking career; it’s about service, perseverance, and inspiring others to see what’s possible when you refuse to let barriers stand in your way.

At the Maryland Truck Driving Championship in June, FedEx Freight driver Joyce Bain captured first place in the 5-axle class. A seasoned competitor, Bain outperformed the state field to earn a spot at this month’s National Truck Driving Championship and National Step Van Driving Championships in Minneapolis.

The 2025 NTDC will feature a record 15 women among the field of competitors. The previous high of 11 female drivers was set in 2014 and matched in 2022. Reflecting on her qualifying performance, Bain told Transport Topics, “It means that you have to have a year of accident-free driving. And if I were the owner of a company, I’d want all my drivers to go because that means you’re gonna have fewer accidents. If you haven’t done the [truck driving championships], you need to try it out.”

State-level champions across nine vehicle classes advance to the national stage. Maintaining a yearlong accident-free record is required for both state and national competition.

This year, more than 400 drivers will test their skills at the Minneapolis Convention Center from August 20-23. Competitors will be evaluated on industry knowledge, pre-trip inspections, and precision maneuvering through challenging courses.

NTDC categories include straight truck, 3-axle, 4-axle, 5-axle, sleeper berth, tanker, twins, and flatbed. The event also features the National Step Van Driving Championships.

Angela Griffin, a trucking lifestyle influencer who competed in Maryland alongside her husband Scott and trained with Bain, emphasized the impact of NTDC. “I do think it has a giant impact on the entire global [industry], because it does allow you to have … a wider perspective of what’s going around,” she said. Griffin added, “It just puts you in more of a mindset to want to encourage others who are not drivers to learn about the industry and be safe around trucks.”

Key Details for NTDC 2025:

What: 88th annual National Truck Driving Championships and Step Van Driving Championships

Who: State-level winners across eight categories advancing to nationals, with a Grand Champion crowned

Defending Champion: FedEx Freight tank truck driver Jackie Reed of Mississippi

Evaluation: Written exam, pre-trip inspection, and driving skills

When: August 20-23

Where: Minneapolis

Arizona’s Ina Daly, an XPO driver, America’s Road Team captain, and the only woman to have won a national title at NTDC (tanker division, 2013), qualified this year in the flatbed division. Speaking at a recent Women in Motion forum, Daly shared, “I’m looking forward to seeing everybody that we only get to see at the nationals, but I’m also excited about the competition and the challenge and representing my company, my state.” She added, “The whole joy of the NTDC program to me is that every year you’re going to make new friends. It gives you the incentive to try and come back again the next year.”

NTDC celebrates the nation’s top drivers in safety and precision. Winners in the nine classes earn national titles, and the best-in-show receives the Bendix NTDC Grand Champion trophy.

Several former Grand Champions are returning this year, including Nevada’s Gragg Wilson (UPS, 2023), Wisconsin’s Jeffrey Langenhahn (XPO, 2014), Ohio’s Scott Woodrome (2018, 2019), last year’s winner Jackie Reed (Mississippi), Utah’s Dale Duncan (2006, 2009), and Connecticut’s Roland Bolduc (2017, 2022). Bolduc noted, “All these grand champions, they’re just awesome people; down to earth; part of the NTDC family.”

About a third of the national field will include FedEx drivers. Competitors from UPS, Walmart, Pitt Ohio, Old Dominion, XPO, and ABF Freight make up most of the remaining lineup.

Jacob Pierce, executive director of ATA’s Safety Management Council & Transportation Security Council, said on the NTDC podcast, “This is why we do this event, to showcase the best of the best. And that’s why we work so hard to make sure it’s driver-focused. It’s always about the driver, and it’s always about celebrating [safety].”

Before the competition, an introductory forum will include keynote addresses from leaders at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the ATA, along with representatives from Minnesota’s law enforcement and transportation agencies.

North American Inspectors Championship:

Running alongside NTDC, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will host the North American Inspectors Championship with 45 traffic experts from the U.S. and Canada. CVSA President Collin Mooney described the tournament as a way to “test, recognize, and award commercial motor vehicle inspector excellence.” Competitors will receive hands-on training covering mobile driver’s licenses, electronic parking brake inspections, light-duty vehicles, and hazardous materials regulations.

Col. Christina Bogojevic of the Minnesota State Patrol praised the event, saying, “This event is an opportunity to recognize the incredible skill and dedication of the men and women who keep our roads safe, while also learning from one another and sharing best practices. We’re proud to host this year’s competition and celebrate the teamwork between inspectors and the trucking industry that helps ensure safe and reliable transportation across North America.”

On August 11, 2025, Medline’s private fleet, MedTrans, wrapped up its third annual National Truck Rodeo, a celebration recognizing the dedication and skill of its drivers in safety and technical driving proficiency.

This spring, the company held five regional rodeo competitions at Medline locations nationwide, inviting drivers and their families to participate. These events were the culmination of numerous smaller contests conducted earlier in the year at Medline’s 45 distribution centers across the U.S.

Winners from each region were selected as first place in three categories, received $1,500, and earned a spot to compete at the national level. The National Truck Rodeo brought together these top performers to compete for a combined prize pool of $15,000. Their performances inspired MedTrans’ driver community, which numbers over 2,000 nationwide.

National Truck Rodeo Winners by Category

Class A Truck Division

First Place ($2,500): Kevin English, St. Peters, Missouri

Second Place ($1,500): Gerald Britt, Olive Branch, Mississippi

Class B Truck Division

First Place ($2,500): Phillip Alongi, Kansas City, Missouri

Second Place ($1,500): Sergio Barrantes, Middletown, Delaware

Third Place ($1,000): Chris Pfohl, Zebulon, Georgia

Second Place ($1,500): Adam Parrella, Jeffersonville, Indiana

Third Place ($1,000): Joshua Rebman, Perryville, Maryland

Jeff Brennan, Medline’s Vice President of Transportation, emphasized the value of having an in-house fleet. “Rather than contracting delivery services to third-party providers, Medline is proud to have our own team members serve our customers every day,” Brennan said. “Our drivers are the visible face of Medline—present at customer facilities throughout the day, in all types of weather, without hesitation.”

Brennan also shared how the National Truck Rodeo positively impacts company culture. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see how the National Truck Rodeo has showcased our driving culture of commitment, technical expertise, and safety. This work fosters friendly competition and encourages our teams to support one another in striving for continuous improvement.”

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) has officially opened registration for the Technology & Maintenance Council’s (TMC) 2025 Fall Meeting and National Technician Skills Competitions, set to take place from September 14-18, 2025, at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Spotlight on Technician Excellence and Industry Trends

“TMC’s Fall Meeting and technician competitions are an important chance to highlight the professionalism and dedication of our industry’s technicians and explore the latest trends in keeping America’s trucks moving,” shared Chris Spear, ATA president and CEO. “Focusing on proper maintenance and repair skills is critical to safety and operational efficiency. Since TMC excels in this area, the Council’s fall meeting promises to be a tremendously valuable event.”

Event Theme and Highlights

This year’s event theme, Ensuring Trucking’s Future Success, focuses on safety, innovation, and operational efficiency. Attendees can expect a mix of educational sessions, task force meetings, and technical and management sessions, alongside the highly anticipated multi-track professional and student technician competitions.

TMCSuperTech and TMCFutureTech Competitions

The week’s activities kick off with TMCSuperTech 2025, where more than 120 technicians will compete across three categories in a two-day competition for powertrain and trailer technicians. Day 1 will feature the qualifying rounds, with the finalists advancing to Day 2. Additionally, TMCFutureTech will host competitions for post-secondary student technicians, providing a platform to test and honor emerging talent in the industry.

“For nearly seven decades, TMC has worked to raise professional and technical standards for the trucking industry,” said Robert Braswell, TMC executive director. “This fall meeting is an important part of that—not just to test the nation’s best technicians—but to provide an opportunity to discuss and learn about the latest advances in truck technology through task forces and educational sessions.”

The competitions serve as a showcase for the unmatched skill and knowledge that trucking industry technicians demonstrate daily, making it the only industry-wide competition dedicated to celebrating technician professionalism, according to an ATA press release.

A Look to the Future of Trucking

“We’re excited to be focusing on maintenance and technician excellence, which is so critical to ensuring trucking’s future success,” said Radu Mihai, TMC general chairman and treasurer, and corporate fleet manager at BURNCO Rock Products. “It is an essential topic as we address today’s pressing technical challenges and work together to advance truck technology.”
