Hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the trucking industry earned Perry Carter, of Cargo Transporters Inc., the prestigious title of DMC Insurance’s Driver of the Year for 2025.

Selected from a pool of elite candidates, Carter’s recognition underscores his lifelong commitment to safe driving, community service, and advocacy for his fellow veterans. The Driver of the Year award, accompanied by an exclusive prize package, will be officially presented at a special event this summer at Cargo Transporters’ terminal in Claremont, North Carolina.

Honoring a Legacy of Excellence

“Perry exemplifies what it means to be a professional driver, a servant leader and an industry ambassador,” stated Matthew Sheffield, marketing and public relations coordinator at Cargo Transporters. “He has the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and community service, and is a powerful voice for veteran causes and a dedicated advocate within the trucking community.”

Carter, a U.S. Air Force veteran, is celebrated for his remarkable leadership and selflessness. His efforts to support organizations aiding veterans stand as key pillars of his inspiring story. These organizations include Ride of Pride-DTNA Cleveland, American Legion Posts, Purple Heart Homes, and American Warriors of Liberty, NC.

Carter also drives Cargo Transporters’ Ride of Pride tractor, The Carolina, a military-themed Freightliner honoring veterans.

A Stellar Career Behind the Wheel

“Perry has also maintained a flawless safety record over nearly 3 million miles and 32 years, over two decades of which have been with Cargo Transporters,” said DMC. His long-standing dedication to safe and efficient driving played a major role in earning him this accolade.

Perry’s deep ties to the trucking industry go beyond the driver’s seat. His roles as a 2024 TCA Driver of the Year and a 2025 ATA Road Team Captain further highlight his influence and impact. On top of that, his participation in Truck Driving Championships and involvement in advocacy efforts for both community and industry causes showcase the qualities that set him apart from his peers.

The DMC Insurance Driver of the Year Award

This award is presented annually by DMC Insurance to acknowledge outstanding drivers among its customers. Candidates are nominated by their respective organizations, with each company having the chance to submit up to three names.

The stakes were high, and over two days—June 27 and 28—drivers representing companies like FedEx Freight, ABF Freight, Tyson Foods, and Walmart Transportation demonstrated exceptional skill and a true commitment to safety.

PodWheels has been officially selected by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) to serve as the podcast partner for the 2025 National Truck Driving and National Step Van Driving Championships (NTDC).

A Proud Collaboration

“Our entire PodWheels Team is extremely honored to know that ATA has placed its trust in our company to have our Road to Minneapolis series serve as the official podcast of NTDC 2025,” said Greg Thompson, founder and executive producer of PodWheels. “We hold a great respect for everyone involved in the NTDC program across the country, and we value each opportunity that we have to share the stories of the nation’s top professionals behind the wheel.”

Comprehensive Coverage

The Road to Minneapolis podcast series will include up to 100 episodes in 2025, continuing to build on PodWheels’ long-standing relationship with the NTDC. Since its first coverage in 2019, PodWheels has produced over 150 episodes, expanding its reach and depth of storytelling around state championships and national events.

About NTDC

With nearly 90 years of history, the annual NTDC is the premier safety competition for the trucking industry. To qualify, professional drivers must win state-level championships in one of nine vehicle divisions and maintain a spotless safety record. ATA reports that around 4,000–5,000 drivers compete each year, with approximately 435 finalists vying for national recognition. Hosted by ATA’s Safety Management Council and state associations, the 2025 NTDC will take place at the Minneapolis Convention Center from August 20–23.

A Tradition of Excellence

“Our coverage of NTDC has become a tradition for PodWheels,” Thompson stated. “Each year we’ve worked to find ways to raise the bar in sharing what we believe are some of the most important stories that we can offer about the trucking industry, the stories of the nation’s safest professional drivers and the people supporting them.”

A Year-Round Spotlight on Safety

“Over the past several years, we have watched the commitment that Greg Thompson and his PodWheels team have made to highlighting the people involved with the various aspects of NTDC,” said Jacob Pierce, executive director of ATA’s Safety Management Council and Transportation Security Council. “Through its ongoing NTDC podcast series, PodWheels has taken ATA’s three-day national championship event and given the NTDC a year-round platform that celebrates safety. “We believe that the Road To Minneapolis series has become a must-listen podcast in the trucking industry, especially for anyone interested in the stories of the [people] who are the best of the best in their profession.”

Stay tuned to PodWheels for comprehensive NTDC 2025 coverage, and visit PodWheels.com for updates, results, and behind-the-scenes stories. PodWheels continues to champion the best in trucking safety, making the industry proud one podcast at a time.

MHC Truck Leasing has achieved a milestone by being crowned PacLease’s 2024 North American Franchise of the Year, solidifying its reputation as an industry leader.

Recognition of Excellence

Headquartered in Bellevue, Wash., MHC Truck Leasing has earned this distinguished title for the second time since receiving its first recognition in 2018. Serving 33 locations across 11 states, this franchise has paved the way for excellence since its partnership with PacLease began in 1982.

Ken Roemer, president of PACCAR Leasing, highlighted MHC Truck Leasing’s steadfast commitment to facility investments and operational efficiency as key factors behind their success. MHC continues to enhance their locations with modern upgrades and expanded service bays to accelerate vehicle servicing. Additionally, their fleet of 20 mobile service vehicles empowers them to service customers directly at their locations, bringing convenience and efficiency to the forefront.

Driven by Superior Customer Service

MHC’s success emphasizes more than just operational capabilities.

“Along with a commitment to facilities and operational excellence, MHC’s dedication to customer service has helped the group continue to thrive,” Roemer said. “They understand the value of offering programs tailored to their customers, backed by a service team that ensures exceptional uptime and driver satisfaction. This is a very well-deserved award for MHC.”

Recognizing Other Top Franchises

PacLease also applauded outstanding performers in other regions, highlighting excellence among its U.S., Canadian, and medium-duty franchises.

The Pete Store Truck Leasing (Baltimore) took home the top honor for Peterbilt’s U.S. franchise.

Kenworth Sales Company PacLease (Salt Lake City) was awarded Kenworth’s top U.S. franchise.

PacLease Edmonton Kenworth received recognition as Canada’s Franchise of the Year, marking its third win for this accolade. Additionally, they were a previous North American Franchise honoree.

Rush Truck Leasing earned the title of Medium Duty Franchise of the Year, thanks to impressive sales performance and extensive customer support.

“I can’t say enough about each of these franchises,” Roemer said. “They’re consistently recognized for their excellence that’s been upheld for years, and in some cases, decades.”

Milestones and Achievements

Each franchise recognized by PacLease exemplifies exceptional growth and commitment.

The Pete Store Truck Leasing: With 18 locations along the East Coast, this franchise expanded by adding two more locations in the past year. “Their strong leadership has taken this franchise to another level,” remarked Roemer.

Kenworth Sales Company PacLease: Operating across 19 locations in eight states, this long-standing franchise has been in business since 1945 and became a PacLease partner in 1997. “They do things the right way, with a dedicated focus on their customers, which is why they’ve been a top franchise many times in the past,” said Roemer.

PacLease Edmonton Kenworth: A Canadian powerhouse, this franchise has been with PacLease since 1982 and has earned numerous accolades, including the 2024 Canadian Franchise of the Year award. “Their dedication to top-tier service and expertise with Kenworth products make them stand out,” noted Roemer.

Rush Truck Leasing: With 36 locations spanning 10 states, Rush has built an impressive network. “They consistently provide top-quality coverage to ensure their customers receive the best possible service, and their growth is a testament to their superior commitment,” Roemer added.

The Road Ahead

These recognitions highlight the remarkable achievements of PacLease’s franchises, but the common thread among them is their dedication to service excellence and a customer-first approach.

With MHC Truck Leasing and other franchises setting the benchmark for excellence, PacLease’s network’s future looks brighter than ever.

During the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS), Overdrive proudly honored the 2024 Trucker of the Year, Alan Kitzhaber. Kitzhaber was awarded a custom-built 1/42nd scale replica of his iconic 1995 Kenworth T600, which has been central to his remarkable career. The scale model was meticulously crafted by Eston Hoffman of Pennsylvania, symbolizing Kitzhaber’s dedication and over 4 million miles of driving excellence. Additionally, Kitzhaber was presented with a premium new seat courtesy of program sponsor Bostrom.

A Career Built on Dedication and Meticulous Maintenance

Kitzhaber’s connection to his Kenworth T600 began when he drove it as a company driver for Millis Transfer before purchasing it himself several years later. His commitment to meticulously maintaining the truck has been unwavering, often partnering with JR Truck Repair and Fabrication in Wisconsin to ensure it remains roadworthy.

According to Adam Pratt, owner of the Chippewa Falls truck shop that serviced Kitzhaber’s vehicle for years, Kitzhaber’s approach is rooted in a proactive mentality. “His philosophy is it’s cheaper to do it now rather than call in a tow truck and deal with repairs on the road,” Pratt shared. “That can cost double.”

Pratt also noted the sheer thoroughness of Kitzhaber’s maintenance process, with checklists that can take up to six hours to complete. This attention to detail is undoubtedly one of the many reasons Kitzhaber’s T600 has stood the test of time and labor.

A Close-Up Look at a Well-Maintained Legend

If you’re curious about Kitzhaber’s methods and modifications for his T600, stay tuned. Overdrive Video Editor Lawson Rudisill recently toured the truck with Kitzhaber at MATS for a closer look at the efficiency-driven upgrades that have made this vintage aerodynamic rig a standout.

A Reflective Farewell to the Industry

Kitzhaber’s trucking career began in the 1980s when he transitioned from managing a Radio Shack to pursuing life on the open road. “I got into trucking thinking I would just do it for a couple of years to see the country,” Kitzhaber recalled. “Then I would get a real job.”

Decades later, not only did Kitzhaber establish himself as a seasoned professional, but he has also earned top honors in the trucking industry. His final delivery will close this successful chapter with a load for longtime client Menard’s, headquartered in his hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The Legacy of a True Professional

Kitzhaber’s achievements go far beyond his miles driven. His exemplary financial management as an owner-operator played a significant role in his recognition as Trucker of the Year. Speaking with Overdrive Radio host Steve Sommers, Kitzhaber shared some wisdom on the owner-operator vs. company driver debate.

“There is some truth that if you’re working as a company driver, you can probably make about the same as an owner-operator without the responsibility,” Kitzhaber explained. “But if you’re a businessman as an owner-operator, you can make more money. It’s more challenging, there’s more risk, but also a lot more reward.”

For Kitzhaber, the secret to success lies in treating trucking like a business. “It was just being a businessman and treating it like a business. Not everyone has that mentality,” he said.

His professionalism, strategic thinking, and attention to detail have left an indelible mark on the industry.

A Legacy of Insights and Expertise

While Kitzhaber is officially retiring from trucking, his wealth of knowledge remains available to benefit others. His insights have been shared in a two-part feature on the Overdrive Extra blog.
